The founding team is the be-all and end-all of a budding startup. However, most founders end up looking for hustlers in all the wrong places - recruiting sites, LinkedIn, Job boards and what not. Fine sites as these might be, people here may not always look forward to your grind.

“Focus on a person’s inner personality. It’s very difficult to change a person upside-down”, Sunder says. Look for people who have the emotional and mental blueprint of a hustler. This type of person typically doesn’t want to do a 9 to 5 job and earn a fat cheque for nothing. They usually have other goals and aspirations in life. 
 
 
Help them view the job at your startup as a step that’ll bring them closer to achieving their long term goal/s. Several startup hustlers have founder aspirations. 
 
Sunder thinks that’s an absolute necessity. “There needs to be some entrepreneurship spirit. You can further nurture it as the person grows in their career. The most important aspect is the ability to take risks. If the person is very risk-averse, startups aren’t the right place for them.” 
 
Give them a chance to grow in your organization with their natural ‘hustle power’, and they’ll come. It’s also important to be coachable, i.e. willing to listen and learn, and willing to try new methods. 
 
Sunder says it’s important to be able to handle critical feedback. “You need to see failure as a stepping stone, and not a full stop. It’s all about learning from mistakes.” 
 
These are the key questions you need to ask yourself: 
· Are they ambitious? 
· Are they entrepreneurial? 
· Are they willing to do what it takes? 
· Do they enjoy communicating? 
· Can they handle rejection well?

“Startup culture is embedded in the behavioral aspects of employees. It all depends on how you want to install newer processes. It’s not necessary that your startup culture would disappear while you scale. Look at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Facebook&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Facebook</a>”, Sunder says. 
 
I ask how a multi-national or unicorn can instill startup values. “You can choose flexible options over rules and controls. If you can instill the importance of that in people’s minds, and make them understand, people will make a lot of stuff on their own.” 
 
Startup culture has gotten a lot of flak for being all fun and no work. Sunder thinks real startup culture encompasses more than a sleek office and fun perks. It’s a place where rather than 24/7 fun, you focus on a ‘work hard, play hard’ model. 
 
“Corporate culture comes in when you make rigid rules, and start ordering people to follow it. It depends on the way you execute.”, Sunder observes. 
 
No matter what stage your business is in, a startup culture can help you keep that fresh, innovative edge that puts you a step ahead of the crowd. However, judging that the culture is new in India, some people get it all wrong. 
 
“It’ll take a while for people in power to understand how they can change the processes. Look at WordPress, they don’t even have an office!” Sunder exclaims. 
 
Like he said, it’s all about maintaining a certain culture in the work environment as your company grows.

How to only hire Hustlers for your Startup

February 2016, <keyword id="705865" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mukesh-Bansal">Mukesh Bansal</keyword> left <keyword id="319719" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Myntra">Myntra</keyword> (and <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>). His departure was touted as one of the most high-profile exits in the industry. 
 
A Computer Science graduate from IIT-Kanpur, Bansal founded Myntra in 2007. He sold his company to Flipkart in one of the largest M&amp;A deals in Indian e-commerce history. The deal was estimated to be worth around $330 million. 
 A week later, Myntra's Head of Finance <keyword id="3261177" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Prabhakar-Sunder">Prabhakar Sunder</keyword> also put in his papers, marking another top level departure within India's most valuable startup. 
 5 months on, Prabhakar has joined as the finance head at e-commerce marketplace <keyword id="2253218" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Voonik">Voonik</keyword>. Business Insider asked him why he left the company he and Mukesh toiled so hard to build from scratch. “It had become a ‘large’ company. I wanted to stay in a business-focused role. Didn’t see that happening (post the acquisition), so I left.” 
 
Post the acquisition, Myntra was supposed to continue to operate as a separate entity with its co-founder and CEO Mukesh Bansal joining Flipkart board and heading the fashion business. 
 
“I love taking risks. Myntra was one, and it paid off. As a company grows, the amount of risks one can take diminishes. You get worried about what investors might think. Myntra wasn’t an independent company anymore”, Sunder sighs. 
 
He explains how Myntra’s company culture changed post Flipkart’s acquisition. In his words, Myntra became more of a ‘corporate setup’ than a ‘startup setup’. “We’d need Flipkart‘s approvals. That really changed the company’s approach. Flipkart has ambitions of listing at some point. There’s a lot of groundwork being done for that. Myntra started getting into too many processes. We had to follow many rules, and I didn’t want to be tied down by too many rules”, Sunder smiles. 
 
Sunder had been a seven-year veteran at Myntra. He worked closely with Mukesh Bansal. Besides finance, Sunder also headed the commercial and legal functions at Flipkart with responsibilities including handling the strategic and corporate finance. The guy has over 9 years of experience with audit firms like PricewaterhouseCoopers and Deloitte. 
 Today, the company he has joined is pegged against the company he shaped. “There’s no dilemma. Voonik is not in direct competition with a Mynta or <keyword id="6388367" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jabong">Jabong</keyword>. Both are looking at premium retail. Voonik is into every-day fashion”, Sunder shrugs. While they may have parted ways, Sunder is all praises for Bansal.

“Mukesh is a mentor for life. He’ll raise the bar every single time. If you like to be appreciated for every little thing, you can’t work with him. Unless you reach an exceptional level, he won’t praise you. That helped me to keep improving as a professional over the 7 years I worked with him.”, Sunder tells me. 
 
The duo had their differences. “Disagreements with Mukesh were very often. He encourages discussion. Mukesh would like somebody to come say it on his face and discuss over the difference in opinion.” 
 
Myntra recently acquired Jabong. The company he nurtured is getting even bigger. Prabhakar has no regrets. He doesn’t hide his surprise though. “I didn’t see this coming. I wouldn’t have been a happy finance guy to have acquired Jabong any way”, he says. 
 
“There are several challenges. The e-commerce industry is getting into profitability mode. Everybody is now worried about their bottom-lines. There are immense tasks at hand. While all of this is happening, an acquisition of this size will add people issues. Jabong is also losing money, and that will add in. While you figure out your synergies, it might take a year or more. It’s not that easy to execute”, Sunder observes.

All nine persons trapped after a huge fire at an underground hydroelectric power station in Telangana were killed, officials said on Friday. Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao ordered a probe by the CID into the fire. Following the chief minister's direction, Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar issued an order appointing CID Additional Director General of Police Govind Singh as the inquiry officer. Singh was asked to conduct a comprehensive inquiry and submit the report to the chief minister. The Chief Minister expressed his deep shock over the fire incident and termed it as "very unfortunate". According to a statement from Chief Minister's Office, he voiced his sorrow over the efforts to rescue the trapped people failing to yield results. All the efforts by rescue workers to save the trapped employees at Telangana State Generation Corporation (<keyword id="2546063" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="TS-GENCO">TS Genco</keyword>) plant at <keyword id="240543" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Srisailam">Srisailam</keyword> canal's left bank in Nagarkurnool district were futile. The rescue workers recovered the bodies of five victims. They were identified as Assistant Engineers Mohan Kumar, Uzma Fatima, and Sunder, Divisional Engineer Srinivas Goud and Mahesh, an employee of a battery company. Efforts were on to trace the bodies of the remaining persons. The rescue personnel including those from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were battling thick smoke to retrieve the bodies. Some rescue workers have also reportedly become ill during the rescue operation. Earlier, personnel from the NDRF and experts from the Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) joined the rescue operations. The fire, which broke late on Thursday, was brought under control by the firefighters. A short-circuit is believed to have caused the fire at unit one of the underground power house. Of the 30 persons reported to be present at the spot, 15 escaped to safety through a tunnel while six were rescued by rescue personnel. They were admitted to a local hospital. One of the survivors said the sparks were first noticed on a panel. "This was followed by series of explosions. There were utter chaos and we all ran out for safety," he said. Telangana Energy Minister Jagadish Reddy and TS Genco and Transco Chairman and Managing Director Prabhakar Rao rushed to the spot and were overseeing rescue efforts. Reddy said that the accident occurred in the first unit of the power station and four panels were damaged. He said that rescue personnel were unable to enter the tunnel due to thick smoke. "As soon as the fire started, they tried to trip the units but that couldn't happen. So we isolated the 400 KV input and all units were tripped," said Prabhakar Rao. Operations at the power station have been suspended following the incident. The Srisailam dam is located across the Krishna river which serves as the border between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
