In a world increasingly propelled by technology, university research makes for the foundation of any nation's economic growth. 
 In line with this, the much awaited Rs 100 crore Research Park at IIT-Bombay is all set to come up in the <keyword id="1003683" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Powai-Campus">Powai campus</keyword> this year. 
 
Even as the building will take another 2 years to complete, the good news is it will start functioning this year with a few firms who have already collaborated with the institute. 
 The research park aims to become a facilitator in bringing together <keyword id="61708" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay">IIT Bombay</keyword> and industry to expand R&amp;D collaboration and promote entrepreneurship. 
 
The new facility will enable IITB to become the nucleus of entrepreneurship in the Powai Valley, similar to the role played by Stanford University in the Silicon Valley and MIT in Route 128. 
 The facility will provide a diverse range of expertise in areas like energy, aviation, semiconductors, construction, IT and <keyword id="6354776" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom">Telecom</keyword>, automotive, chemical, industrial design, metals/material and Biotech/Pharma.

IIT-B's Research Park - The Innovation Hub that every IIT should have

A 6-feet female <keyword id="6392350" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Crocodile">crocodile</keyword> spotted near the entry gate of Ganesh immersion ghat adjoining the IIT-Mumbai boundary wall left Mumbaikars shocked last week. 
 An activist who spotted the crocodile later informed media that the dangerous animal could have used a makeshift road made by <keyword id="1234437" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="BMC-workers">BMC workers</keyword> who has been engaged in clean-up and beautification work at the <keyword id="536956" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Powai-Lake">Powai Lake</keyword>. 
 
 
The road was created due to silt being collected on the banks by the workers who ignored the possibility that crocodiles could use it to stray out of the lake. Also a stretch of land was formed because of debris being dumped here that was not cleaned by BMC over the years. There are 40 crocodiles in Powai lake. 
 
The incident has raised security concerns and infuriated activists who are blaming BMC for destroying the crocodile habitat and ignoring safety of the citizens. 
 Meanwhile, civic body officials have identified the two areas from where the crocodiles can venture out, and have dug up two trenches near <keyword id="61708" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay">IIT Bombay</keyword> campus. 
 Activists are now warning Mumbaikars to stay away from the lake, more so because <keyword id="6439882" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="monsoons">monsoons</keyword> will lead to water level rise and crocodiles may stray out again. 
 
Meanwhile, warning boards have also been put up suggesting that the lake has crocodiles and people should not venture close to the water body.

With technology giant <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> bracing to hire talent from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay this year, this placement season is expected to be better for students compared to last year. The institute had seen a slump in the number of offers in the first phase of the placements last year. Owing to a tough market scenario in e-commerce coupled with the <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>-IIM row, fewer startups had visited the institutes during campus placement. Flipkart had stayed off campuses. <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> had resorted to an internal process of hiring candidates than going to the IITs. PSUs and FMCG companies were in great demand. Apple however has now confirmed its presence at the Powai campus in the 2017 placement season. The company has already floated its application forms for interested graduates. According to sources, the tech giant is offering positions for coding profile and most computer science students and some enthusiasts from other streams have signed up for the test. The preliminary short-listing exam would be held before the semester exams take place in the last week of November. Placements kickstart on December 1. “We are seeing an emerging trend with new companies showing interest in placements. We have received confirmation from a few of them,” Tom Mathew, Professor in Charge of Placements, at IIT-Bombay said. While the other IITs meanwhile wait to hear from Apple on whether it will be hiring from the other campuses this year, start-ups that were blacklisted from placements last year (after the Flipkart-IIM Ahmedabad tussle) will be allowed to return to campuses this year. Institutes are also waiting for confirmation of participation by Public Sector Undertakings. Last year, PSUs had come in early for placements by replacing start-ups in the early slots. “We are yet to find out if PSUs want the early slots as they are yet to confirm their dates. Invitations have been sent,” said Mathew. Even as Apple has not confirmed its participation in any other campus apart from IIT Bombay as of now, most colleges are seeking clarity in the next two days, without which they say that they may have to turn down Apple's request.

Why this placement season could turn out to be great for IIT Bombay freshers

<keyword id="6006683" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="medha-kumari">Medha Kumari</keyword>, a <keyword id="66379" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="National-Institute-of-Technology">National Institute of Technology</keyword> student from the western state of Bihar, recently clutched a Rs 39.5 lakh (4 million) annual package from <keyword id="99699" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adobe">Adobe</keyword> during the ongoing 2017 placement drive. Several students from IIT and IIM have bagged such offers from global giants like <keyword id="6355629" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> and <keyword id="10387" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> in the past, but why Kumari's story is inspiring is because she is the first girl student from her college to have made it to Adobe, and that too at the <keyword id="3947508" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="highest-salary-package">highest salary package</keyword> offered to any NIT Patna student in the past. Born to a small trader Manoj Kumar Karak, Kumari is a computer science and engineering student at NIT Patna. Her mother Benu Karak is a homemaker. She had earlier bagged an annual pay package of Rs 8.75 lakh at another software company, but tried again. “Since I was expecting better pay package, I started preparing for the placement once again and it worked. The interview was quite tough but I was confident,” she says. Apart from Adobe, 37 companies including Tata Motors, Samsung R&amp;D Institute India, HighRadius, Hero MotoCorp, Wipro, L&amp;T Corporate (POWAI), IBM, L&amp;T Construction, Capgemini, Futures First and Amazon participated in the placement drive. Amazon became the second biggest recruiter offering five students Rs 27.5 lakh pay package each. HighRadius meanwhile made 51 offers this year, which is the biggest from a recruiter, out of which 49 students were offered Rs 7 lakh package while 2 students received annual offers of Rs 8 lakh. It is a player in cloud-based integrated receivables software space. Among all these offers, Medha Kumari's salary package has been the highest for an NIT-Patna student till date, according to Samrat Mukherjee from the Training and Placement Cell at NIT Patna. Kumari had appeared for an online test conducted by Adobe on the institute’s campus, followed by a technical test and an interview conducted in Kolkata. 40 other students also appeared for the online test, however, she became the only student to clear all rounds and secure a job in Adobe from her college. The 20-year-old student is now bracing to kick-start her stint at Adobe, Noida from June 2018 as software development, implementation, and coding officer.

IIT-B students unveiled EVo1 at the Powai Institute campus, it is India’s first electric race car. A team of 60 students designed this car in 2012. It has a top speed of 115 km per hour and weighs about 320 kgs. It has acceleration from 1 to 100 kmph in 5 seconds and from 0 to 60 kmph in 3.5 seconds. It possesses high efficiency DC motors and Lithium polymer batteries.

 A group of passionate technologists, an IIT professor and a social entrepreneur joined hands and came up with an innovative product that aims to alleviate the hardships faced by visually challenged people when it comes to independent mobility.SmartCane™ is an aid for the visually impaired that provides safe and independent mobility which eases their integration into the society. It helps its user diagnose any above-the-knee obstruction from a distance of 3 meters. Frugality and resourcefulness have ensured that this product costs only INR 3,000.

An App which Facebook ended up buying 
 Abheek and Soham were inspired to create Tagtile by an incident in a restaurant in San Francisco. The <keyword id="137562" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="IITians">IITians</keyword> heard the restaurant owner complain about the websites and apps offering deals. Thus, Tagtile was launched in March 2011 to satisfy the merchants as well as customers with exciting deals and offers. Tagtile won many acclaims and became one of the widely used apps. It also received an award in October 2011 for Best Startup in a competition among 100-odd start-ups in the Silicon Valley.Initially a partnership deal, ended with Facebook buying the year-old product. The deal brought along an offer for Abheek and Soham to join Facebook as product manager and engineer.

Water rides You can now walk On Mirik Gogri and Ayush Jain, Two IIT-Bombay alumni formed Humming Whale Product Innovations, a company that innovates path-breaking products and solutions. The team came up with a fun idea of walking on water, which they later gamified into a ride.  Professor LM Das of IIT-D conceived the idea of using compressed hydrogen as an automotive fuel with Delhi's air pollution in mind . In the early '80s, it was a bold initiative — an idea ahead of its time. Lay acquaintances thought he was talking about making a hydrogen bomb. Detractors in the scientific community dismissed his research as a freak project. But Das soldiered on alone over the next three decades as associates came and went. He says - Unlike petroleum-derived hydrocarbon fuels, pure hydrogen does not produce toxic carbon monoxide or the heat-trapping carbon dioxide on combustion. There are no oxides of sulphur, nor any particulates. Water vapour and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) are the only byproducts. Although NOx is a pollutant, Das claims their engine has been optimized to reduce its emission greatly.

Designed and developed in just 95 days by two IIT Bombay students - Anurag Meena and Satyendra Meena - is a revolutionary machine which accepts used cans or bottles, and dispenses 300 millilitres of clean (RO and UV treated) drinking water in exchange. It is currently on a pilot test run at the IIT-Bombay boys’ hostel. In the coming months, it will also be installed in several other places in Mumbai and Chandigarh.

With this emerging data center, that is about to change," said Niranjan Hiranandani of the Hiranandani real estate development group.</li></ul> Hiranandani group’s wholly-owned subsidiary Yotta Infrastructure on Monday unveiled North India’s first hyperscale data center at its Greater Noida Data Center Park, in a boost to the region’s digital economy. Called Yotta D1, it was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh <keyword id="43254" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="yogi-adityanath" source="Orion">Yogi Adityanath</keyword> and Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics &amp; IT. The data center has been set up with an investment of around ₹1,500 crore. Once fully functional, Yotta D1 building will see an additional investment of ₹5,000 crore in IT equipment, the company said in a press release. "When the data revolution began in India, Mumbai and Chennai were prime data storage centers. This is about to change with data centers now coming up in the Delhi NCR region as well. When you have a data center next to you, a lot of companies will be able to give lightning fast processing for data to local people, in turn boosting productivity," said Darshan Hiranandani, co-founder and chairman of Yotta Infrastructure. Yotta D1 is strategically located near the key business hubs of NCR, the company said. The company also entered into an MoU with the UP government to invest ₹39,000 crore in a phased manner over 5-7 years. The investment will go towards constructing the data center campus and procuring IT equipment and other hardware for Yotta customers. "Data will be a $1 trillion dollar economy by 2025 and this data center built in Greater Noida is the fastest-built data center globally. Today, over 85% of India's data is stored abroad. With this emerging data center, that is about to change," said Niranjan Hiranandani of the Hiranandani real estate development group. The data center inaugurated on Monday is spread across 20 acres. The Yotta Greater Noida Data Center Park will offer a total capacity of 30,000 racks, four dedicated fiber paths and an IT power capacity of 160 MW. In addition, the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the next two data center buildings – Yotta D2 &amp; D3, was also performed on Monday. Data centers go ‘local’ Sunil <keyword id="6356160" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="gupta" source="Orion">Gupta</keyword>, co-founder and CEO Yotta Infrastructure, said that India will need to build its data storage capacity at a pace which is 15 times more than the mature global data centers of the world. India has over 700 million active internet users, and has clocked in 9.3 billion UPI transactions in one quarter alone. "If someone in Delhi wants to watch a high-definition movie, they should not wait for data to come from the Mumbai data center," said Gupta, who is also known as India's Data Man. The 5,000 data racks in Yotta D1 building has the capacity for storing at least 60 lakh high-definition movies, the company said. "These data centers will have multiple-use cases. Customers from edtech, healthtech companies, SMEs, public sector units, state government initiatives like AYUSH, Aadhar, storage of passport data can tap into this resource," added Gupta. Launched three years ago, Yotta Infrastructure has built data centers in Powai and will be tapping into Thane and Panvel in Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Gujarat and West Bengal in the coming years. It also aims to go international and is in talks with the government of Bangladesh, the company said.
