Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-jobless-claims-unemployment-insurance-labor-market-filings-recession-coronavirus-2020-7">weekly unemployment claims increased</a> again to 1.43 million, the 19th week in a row with more than 1 million claims.  </p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/president-trump-tweet-delay-election-mail-in-voting-2020-7"><strong>President Trump suggested postponing the presidential election, which he cannot do. </strong></a>Trailing badly in the polls, Trump tweeted falsely that mail-in voting could make the election "FRAUDULENT." Only Congress could change the date of the presidential election, and only a constitutional amendment could change Inauguration Day. </p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/herman-cain-dies-after-being-hospitalized-for-covid-19-2020-7"><strong>Former GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain has died at 74, apparently of COVID. </strong></a>He had been hospitalized for weeks, and had contracted the virus shortly after attending President Trump's Tulsa rally. A former restaurateur, Cain briefly led the GOP field in 2011. Trump considered him for the Fed board in 2019, but didn't nominate him after widespread opposition. </p><h2><strong>VIEWS OF THE DAY</strong></h2><p><strong>It's time to take Trump seriously, figuratively, and literally</strong></p><p>This morning President Trump tweeted about delaying the election due to the pandemic.</p><p><div type="image" title="Screen Shot 2020 07 30 at 11.39.38 AM" height="542" width="1184" msid="77269893" hostid="261"></div></p><p>In April Trump's rival, Vice President <keyword id="99719" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Joe-Biden">Joe Biden</keyword>, predicted the President might try to delay the election if his poll numbers looked bad, and they look hideous.</p><p><div type="image" title="Screen Shot 2020 07 30 at 11.40.12 AM" height="684" width="1172" msid="77269894" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Remember that this is a pandemic that spun out of control largely because of a lack of federal response. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mask-debate-not-culture-war-trump-trying-distort-reality-facts-2020-7">Trump only put on a mask</a> himself <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/8-times-trump-refused-to-wear-mask-downplayed-effectiveness-2020-7">a few weeks ago</a>. The White House could create the conditions for safe elections by competently handling this crisis, but it won't. That's why we're here.</p><p>Trump works by gut instinct, and he has never let his ignorance of how the US government works — or the limits of presidential power — stop him from trampling on the rights of others. (See: His multiple attempts at passing a travel ban on Muslim countries.) The fact that he can't change the date of the election won't stop him from knocking on every door, or trying to open any window he can, into victory.</p><p>We already have evidence that Trump will stop at nothing to improve his chances for reelection. Two weeks ago he tried to get <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2020/07/18/white-house-testing-budget-cdc-coronavirus/">Republicans to defund coronavirus testing</a> in Congress' upcoming pandemic relief bill to make infection numbers look better for him.  </p><p>If you think someone who is willing to do that won't try to hinder the democratic process, I have a gold-plated, Trump-branded bridge to sell you. And I don't just mean Trump will try messing with vote counts, I mean he will be <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-election-trouble-confusing-americans-eroding-trust-institutions-2020-7">messing with our faith in the outcome of this election</a> and the process of democracy itself. That's the bare minimum of what he will do.</p><p>It is in this man's inherent nature to use all of his power — unfortunately, the power of the presidency — for his own power's sake. That is exactly how Henry Wallace, Vice President of this country from 1941 to 1945,<a href="https://www.cbsd.org/cms/lib/PA01916442/Centricity/Domain/1864/Henry%20Wallace_The%20Danger%20of%20American%20Fascism.pdf"> described American fascists.</a></p><p>"A fascist is one whose lust for money or power is combined with such an intensity of intolerance toward those of other races, parties, classes, religions, cultures, regions or nations as to make him ruthless in his use of deceit or violence to attain his ends. The supreme god of a fascist, to which his ends are directed, may be money or power; may be a race or a class; may be a military, clique or an economic group; or may be a culture, religion, or a political party."</p><p>Be vigilant. He is a desperate demagogue limited only by what we the people will abide. <em>— <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/linette-lopez">Linette Lopez</a></em></p><p><em><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/linette-lopez"><strong>If you're enjoying this story, </strong></a><strong><a href="https://www.insider.com/insider-today">sign up now for the Insider Today newsletter</a> to receive more of these insights from Henry Blodget and David Plotz.</strong></em></p><p><div type="image" title="Bezos" height="592" width="1184" msid="77269899" hostid="261"></div><br /><strong>Now we know what Jeff Bezos' worried face looks like</strong></p><p>Four masters of Silicon Valley — the CEOs of Apple, Google, Amazon and Facebook — testified before Congress to answer for their anti-competitive behavior yesterday, and in stark contrast to previous hearings they were visibly shaken by the questions they were asked.</p><p>As I put in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/congress-made-amazon-apple-facebook-google-ceos-sweat-during-hearing-2020-7">my column</a>, we got to see Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos' worried face.</p><p>Some highlights in case all you caught were the clips of Republicans screaming about being silenced (there was some of that, but there was more productive questioning):</p><ul><li>Members of both parties hammered Facebook for its strategy of buying, copying or threatening competitors out of business, <a href="https://t.co/jaCbVdMPqV?amp=1">reading damning internal emails</a> from the company's acquisition of Instagram.</li><li>Bezos was tongue tied when asked why Amazon makes money from counterfeit goods, nor could he answer any questions about Amazon's protocol for ensuring that it's not selling stolen goods.</li><li>Bezos squirmed through questions from Representative Pramila Jayapal about how Amazon misuses third-party seller data to develop in-house brands that compete with merchants selling on his platform saying only, "I can't answer that question yes or no."</li><li>Zuckerberg could not explain away the fact that his company profits from peddling misinformation. Cicilline brought up that, despite committing to only distributing accurate information about the coronavirus, it took <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/28/tech/facebook-youtube-coronavirus/index.html">Facebook five hours and 20 million views</a> before it took down a video full of false claims about the pandemic. Amplifying that misinformation once its on the platform, Cicilline said is a "business decision."</li><li>Democratic Rep. Congressman Joe Neguse of Colorado pressed the CEOs of Apple and Google, both of which control app stores, to promise they would not use the information they collect from apps in their stores to build competitors.</li><li>Democratic Rep. Val Demings of Florida pressed Pichai about the way Google surveils its customers, bundling data from across all of its products (Gmail, maps, etc.) in order to sell them targeted ads</li></ul><p>All in all, the CEOs seemed caught off guard. They expected this hearing to be more of the same from Washington — a series of uninformed questions from geriatric senators who barely read email. It's time to take Trump seriously, figuratively, and literally

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div>Billionaire Charles "Chuck" Feeney is remarkable.</p><p>In a story about Feeney's philanthropy, his legacy, and how his experience compares to that of US president-elect Donald Trump, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/05/nyregion/james-bond-of-philanthropy-gives-away-the-last-of-his-fortune.html">New York Times</a> reporter Jim Dwyer writes about the $8 billion Feeney has given away over the course of his lifetime.</p><p>The billionaire calls it "giving while living."</p><p>Feeney signed over his entire fortune to <a href="http://www.atlanticphilanthropies.org/">Atlantic Philanthropies</a>, a collection of private foundations, over three decades ago, and kept the funds growing through tech investments in companies like Facebook and Alibaba. None of the 1,000 buildings he's funded bear his name, Dwyer points out.</p><p><span>"It's more than money. It's satisfaction that you're achieving something that is helpful to people," Feeney said of his giving in <a href="http://www.atlanticphilanthropies.org/giving-while-living">video posted on the Atlantic Philanthropies site</a>.</span></p><p>Now in his 80s, Feeney's left himself with about $2 million worth of wealth to live on - less than <span>0.001%</span> of the $8 billion he's given away.</p><p>All of that in itself is remarkable, to say the least, but Dwyer's details about how Feeney lived his day-to-day life may be equally so. Feeney:</p><ul><li>Flew coach until he was 75 years old</li><li>"... and carried reading materials in a plastic bag"</li><li>Skipped luxury lunches in New York City in favor of burgers at one of the ubiquitous Upper-East-Side pubs</li><li>Rents his home, a San Francisco apartment</li></ul><p>For the average person, or perhaps even the average millionaire, these everyday habits aren't so out-of-the-ordinary. But Feeney is - or was, anyway - a <em>billionaire</em>. Billionaires don't have to fly coach.</p><p>His cramped airplane seats and casual burgers put him squarely <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-habits-of-frugal-billionaires-2016-7/">in the company of billionaires</a> like investor Warren Buffett, who lives in the Omaha, Nebraska house he bought for a little over $31,000 in 1958 (Buffett has has signed <a href="https://givingpledge.org/">The Giving Pledge</a> along with Feeney, promising to give more than half of his wealth to philanthropy and charity during his lifetime or posthumously), and Dish Network Chairman Charlie Ergen, who is known for packing a brown-bag lunch every day.</p><p>But they aren't cheap. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/difference-between-cheap-and-frugal-2016-6">They're frugal</a>. Spending on things they care the most about - in Feeney's case, philanthropic causes around higher education, public health, human rights, and scientific research - and hardly sparing a dime for the things they don't. </p><p>"I'm not here to tell anyone what to do with their money," Feeney said in the Atlantic Philanthropies video. "You make your money, you do what you want with it. Philanthropist who has given away entire $8 billion fortune flew coach and carried plastic bags

<p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Denise Chan/Flickr <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/denn/18743985/in/photolist-34a7d7-34a753-2E4Wa-5LLUMS-2E4US-4oTwA6-inuHCV-4e1Ao1-5EEnZb-2E4Vr-2E4VP-jFYRT-5C3X6n-61mwcN-4LxYg2-4Pdt8C-529VSk-8tP4V">www.flickr.com</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p class="p1">Have you ever wanted to scan barcodes in your favorite magazines so that you can get access to an advertiser's special website?</p><p class="p1">This was the premise of the CueCat, a feline-shaped handheld barcode scanner that briefly appeared on the tech scene in 2000 and 2001 before flaming out in a storm of derision and puzzlement.</p><p class="p1">The goal of the CueCat was to serve as a bridge between the world of physical, print media and the Internet. Consumers used the gadget to scan special barcodes printed in magazines - for example a barcode might appear next to next to an ad for a car or a toothbrush. The gadget, which needed to be plugged in to a PC, then helpfully directed the PC's browser to specialized Web pages that contained more info about the car, toothbrush, or whatever.</p><p class="p1">The device's creator, DigitalConvergence, scored funding from a group of big-name backers, including Coca-Cola, Radio Shack, and the parent company of the Dallas Morning News. The device was given to consumers for free, distributed at Radio Shack stores and mailed to homes across the United States.</p><p class="p1">But the electronic cat left many scratching their heads. "On the first standard, convenience, the CueCat fails miserably," <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB971305166620370724">said a review in the Wall Street Journal</a> by Walt Mossberg.</p><p class="p1">"In order to scan in codes from magazines and newspapers, you have to be reading them in front of your PC. PC World magazine <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/article/125772/worst_products_ever.html?page=8">listed it among the 25 worst tech products of all time</a>, while Gizmodo put it at the top of its list of worst gadgets.</p><p class="p1">Some might argue that the much-maligned CueCat was actually ahead of its time. The idea was not so different from the QR codes that consumers cheerfully scan with their smartphones these days. The difference of course is that smartphones are portable devices that can do lots of other things, rather than a one-trick pony that needs to be plugged in to a PC.</p><p class="p1">Interestingly, it seems the CueCat is worth more dead than alive. This cat-shaped gizmo was panned as one of the worst products ever, but may have been ahead of its time

<br /> Often touted to be the first family of Bollywood, the Kapoors have roots that go deep in Indian cinema. One doesn’t even need to mention how much the family has and still is contributing to Hindi cinema. Needless to say, the <keyword id="2167" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kapoor-family">Kapoor family</keyword> has been time and again honoured with many awards for this contribution.<br />

Talking of honours, the highest honour one can get for contribution in Indian cinema is the much-coveted Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and the Kapoor family has had not one but three people who have been facilitated with the honour.<br />
<br /> The first Kapoor to get this award was Prithvi<keyword id="6358412" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Raj-Kapoor">raj Kapoor</keyword>, who lay the foundation stone for his generations to rule the hearts of millions of Bollywood fans worldwide. He is the only person to have won this award posthumously. For his immense contribution to the budding Indian cinema, he was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke award for the year 1971. His son Raj Kapoor accepted the award on his behalf, after his death in May 1972.<br />

The second Kapoor to have been honoured with the award was none other than the great showman Raj Kapoor, who followed his father’s steps and became the face of Indian cinema for years to come. For his role in shaping the Indian cinema, he got the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 1987. However, while attending the event to collect the award, he suffered a massive heart attack and was admitted in the hospital for one month before he succumbed to his medical conditions.<br />

The third and latest name in the list is that of Balbir Raj Kapoor, better known to the world as Shashi Kapoor. A highly successful actor and the younger brother of Raj Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor is regarded for being one of the producers and directors who didn’t play safe and invested in risky coming-of-age cinema; something that played a huge role in making Indian cinema what it is today. Shashi Kapoor would be given the honour in 2015, as announced yesterday.<br />

Talking of the award, it includes a <em>Swarn Kamal</em> (Golden Lotus), a cash prize of Rs.10 lakh, and a shawl.<br />

Shashi Kapoor becomes the third ‘Kapoor’ to get the Dadasaheb Phalke award

<p class="p1"><span class="s1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Last week, The Intercept <a href="https://theintercept.com/drone-papers">published a collection of leaked classified documents</a> detailing inner workings of the Obama Administration's drone strike operations in East Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">The drone program has become the centerpiece of the Obama Administration counter-terrorism strategy, with the US military and CIA carrying out hundreds of strikes over the last decade to take out supposed terrorists and enemy combatants. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">The primary information revealed in the documents is an intergovernmental study on the successes and failures of the drone program.</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">And the most troubling aspect of the report comes from a quote from the unnamed source.</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">The source indicated that drone strikes are far less precise than the government lets on. This is due to how the government categorizes those killed by drone strikes and, in effect, obscures the collateral damage caused by such strikes. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">"If there is no evidence that proves a person killed in a strike was either not a military aged male, or was a military aged male but not an unlawful enemy combatant, then there is no question. They <a href="https://theintercept.com/drone-papers/manhunting-in-the-hindu-kush/">label them [Enemy Killed In Action]</a>," the source told The Intercept.</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">After a drone strike is conducted, anyone the military or CIA can't prove is not an unlawful enemy combatant goes into the statistics as an "enemy." That designation is only removed if evidence emerges proving the person killed wasn't an "unlawful enemy combatant" - evidence that is often near impossible to come by. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">I</span><span class="s1">t's essentially "guilty until proven innocent." The effect of this is that we have no idea exactly how many civilians have actually been killed in US drone strikes in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, and Yemen - and we may never know. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">The source called the governments statements on civilian casualties caused by drone strikes </span><span class="s2">"exaggerating at best, if not outright lies."</span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s3">The New York Times <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/29/world/obamas-leadership-in-war-on-al-qaeda.html?_r=0&amp;mtrref=undefined">reported a similar finding in 2012</a>, noting that Obama's method for counting civilian casualties "</span><span class="s1">counts all military-age males in a strike zone as combatants, according to several administration officials, unless there is explicit intelligence posthumously proving them innocent."</span></p><p class="p5"><span class="s1">"It bothers me when they say there were seven guys, so <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/29/world/obamas-leadership-in-war-on-al-qaeda.html?_r=0&amp;mtrref=undefined">they must all be militants</a>," an administration official told the New York Times, regarding the policy. Among the guidelines established was Obama's assertion that before any strike, intelligence must indicate that "<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/24/us/politics/transcript-of-obamas-speech-on-drone-policy.html?_r=0">there </a></span><span class="s4"><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/24/us/politics/transcript-of-obamas-speech-on-drone-policy.html?_r=0">must be near-certainty that no civilians will be killed or injured</a> - the highest standard we can set.</span><span class="s5">" </span></p><p class="p8"><span class="s1">While that supposedly "high standard" sounds good on paper, the findings in the leaked documents appear to show drone strikes as imprecise. </span></p><p class="p10"><span class="s5">Leaked slides <a href="https://theintercept.com/document/2015/10/14/operation-haymaker">pertaining to the military's operations along Afghanistan's border with Pakistan</a>, called Operation Haymaker, showed that "</span><span class="s1">during a five-month stretch of the campaign, nearly nine out of 10 people who died in airstrikes were not the Americans' direct targets." By February 2013, the Haymaker airstrikes had killed 35 specifically targeted people, while more than 200 were, by default, declared "enemy killed in action."</span></p><p class="p12"><span class="s1">Here are the numbers for another five-month stretch, this one in 2012.
