<p><em>This article is part of "</em><a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/category/behind-the-wheel"><em>Behind the Wheel</em></a><em>," a series about the highly competitive and high-tech world of Formula 1.</em></p><p class="drop-cap">Bernd Mayländer has led a lot of laps in Formula 1 — but not as a competitor. Ever since the 1999 San Marino Grand Prix, the 52-year-old German driver has been behind the wheel of the Formula 1 safety car, leading the pack safely around the track after a crash or incident.</p><p>His longevity in the role has surprised even him.</p><p>"I certainly didn't expect 24 years ago that I'd still be doing this," Mayländer said with a laugh. "But I'm still enjoying it and didn't think time would go by so quickly. Just to be a little part of this great sport — it's amazing."</p><p>The safety car plays a major role in today's F1. When an accident or crash happens, or if weather conditions get particularly bad, the safety car is sent out and all competitors must slow down and follow it. Driving at a reasonable pace, Mayländer guides the Formula 1 cars slowly around the course, ensuring that track marshals can remove debris and the medical team can tend to injured drivers.</p><p>But the safety car dates to long before Mayländer's involvement. In fact, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the first deployment of a safety car in F1.</p><p>Business Insider chatted with Mayländer about the history of the F1 safety car and some of his most memorable moments in the sport.</p><div type="image" title="A yellow Porsche 914" height="4318" width="5904" msid="105479258" hostid="261" sizebytes="1125178"></div><h2>A rocky start</h2><p>The first F1 safety car was a "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.fia.com/news/fia-insights-celebrating-50-years-fia-safety-car-formula-1">lemon-yellow</a>" Porsche 914, and it made its debut at the rain-soaked 1973 Canadian Grand Prix. It was a far cry from the kind of sports cars used today. A rear engine provided the tiny car with about 80 horsepower.</p><p>"I wasn't watching TV at the time because maybe I was too young," Mayländer said. "But I do remember seeing pictures of it — still a phenomenal car."</p><p>The safety car, then referred to as the "pace-car control system," went through just one test before its debut at the '73 race. Its deployment caused a fair bit of <a target="_blank" href="https://youtu.be/rnDAXHy4UD4?si=bEPUprbBQhZ6tRkj">confusion</a>. Some racers were unsure whether to line up behind it, and the results of that race would later be disputed because of the mishap.</p><h2>A variety of suppliers</h2><div type="image" title="The Formula 1 safety car, a Renault Clio, at the 1996 Argentine Grand Prix" height="943" width="1885" msid="105479260" hostid="261" sizebytes="98844"></div><p>In the years following its debut, the safety car bounced around between various manufacturers and was not a constant presence at races until the '90s. Notable safety cars included a Lamborghini Countach, deployed for several years in the early '80s in Monaco, a Fiat Tempra, and a Renault Clio.</p><p>Of all these old safety cars, Mayländer pointed to the Lamborghini as one he wished he could have driven.</p><p>"I've never driven a Lamborghini in my life," he said. "And the Countach, that was something very special."</p><h2>Standardizing the process</h2><p>Toward the end of the '96 season, the International Automobile Federation made moves to formalize the safety-car process. Mercedes became the official safety-car supplier with its C36 AMG model, and the British driver Oliver Gavin was named the first permanent driver of the safety car.</p><div type="image" title="The Formula 1 safety car in the 1997 Canadian Grand Prix" height="1194" width="1903" msid="105479263" hostid="261" sizebytes="294594"></div><h2>Bernd Mayländer makes his safety-car debut</h2><p>Mayländer's first time behind the wheel of the safety car came at the '99 San Marino Grand Prix, driving a Mercedes CLK 55 AMG.</p><p>"I remember everything from that first race weekend," he said. "I was nervous, just a young race driver at the time, thrust into this Formula 1 role."</p><div type="image" title="F1 safety driver Bernd Mayländer puts on his helmet at the 2007 European Grand Prix" height="4000" width="6000" msid="105479267" hostid="261" sizebytes="822924"></div><p>Today, Mayländer has multiple TV screens and monitors in his car to follow the action, but that wasn't the case in '99.</p><p>"We had a hand radio when we started — and that was it," he said.</p><h2>The longest race</h2><p>One of the wildest races Mayländer recalled was the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix — a rainy event that saw record use of the safety car (which led the pack for roughly 45% of the race).</p><p>"It was the longest Formula 1 race ever, if you count the red flags," Mayländer said. "We had to stop twice to refuel the safety car. So even for me, that was a proper race, driving nearly 150 kilometers."</p><div type="image" title="F1 cars in wet conditions during the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix" height="3956" width="6000" msid="105479270" hostid="261" sizebytes="1167318"></div><p>The British driver Jenson Button of McLaren ultimately won in dramatic fashion, clawing back from last place to first after five pit stops — the most ever by a race winner.</p><p>"That was a special one," Mayländer said.</p><h2>Abu Dhabi controversy</h2><p>One of the most notable safety-car moments in recent memory was <a target="_blank" rel="noopener" href="https://www.insider.com/lap-by-lap-breakdown-f1-2021-season-finale-max-verstappen-2021-12">the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix</a>, which decided that year's World Drivers' Championship. The safety car was deployed after a late crash — but instead of ending the race under caution, race control controversially called to resume with just one lap to go, allowing Max Verstappen, on fresh tires, to pass Lewis Hamilton <a target="_blank" rel="noopener" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTe12fH2xtQ&amp;ab_channel=FORMULA1">for the win and championship title</a>.</p><div type="image" title="The F1 safety car in front of Mercedes British driver Lewis Hamilton at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix" height="1410" width="2610" msid="105479272" hostid="261" sizebytes="177360"></div><p>"For sure, that was a big race, but I treated it like a normal situation," Mayländer said. "It was just another procedure, and obviously what happened afterwards was outside of my job. It doesn't matter who is world champion — for me, just do your job, do as good as possible, full stop."</p><h2>It's more than just driving a car</h2><p>Mayländer does much more than just set the pace after an accident. He notifies race control of any debris on the track and, during rainy conditions, reports on surface conditions and whether there's standing water anywhere on the circuit.</p><p>Fans at home often hear F1 drivers complaining on their team radios that Mayländer should drive faster so that they can keep their tires warm. In fact, drivers in the lead will often inch up as close behind Mayländer as possible to try and speed him along, though the affable German pays it no mind.</p><p>"It's a game, and I know the drivers want to keep the performance in their tires," he said. "I'd do the same if I were in their position. But for me, it makes no difference — I'm there for safety."</p><div type="image" title="Formula 1 safety car driver Bernd Mayländer" height="3200" width="4800" msid="105479273" hostid="261" sizebytes="418112"></div><h2>Today's safety cars</h2><p>In today's F1, the safety car alternates between a Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series and an Aston Martin Vantage. Both cars have V8 engines, about 730 horsepower, and can reach nearly 200 mph.</p><p>"Formula 1 is always evolving and developing, and so, too, is the safety car," Mayländer said.</p><div type="image" title="The F1 safety car drives in front of Red Bull Racing's Mexican driver Sergio Perez during the 2023 Saudi Arabia Grand Prix" height="4000" width="6000" msid="105479275" hostid="261" sizebytes="905044"></div><p>"These are real race cars — the downforce and everything," Mayländer, who in the '90s was an accomplished endurance racer, said. "It's quite nice to have two suppliers now working together. I enjoy learning how to drive these wonderful cars. Even at my age, I never stop learning."</p><p>On a typical race weekend, Mayländer will log hours of practice time driving the track, making sure he understands all the braking points. He considers old-school tracks, such as Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium and Suzuka International Racing Course in Japan, among his favorites.</p><p>"I really love them all, though," he added. "All the circuits have special characteristics."</p>

How the F1 safety car has evolved since 1973 — from Porsche 914 to Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A Houston man was killed in late April by a driver going over 100mph in a Porsche.</li><li>The driver lost control of the car and hit a man on a date walking on the sidewalk, killing him.</li></ul><p>A Texas socialite accused of drunkenly driving her Porsche faster than 100mph onto a sidewalk, killing a man who was on a first date, has been sued by the man's family after prosecutors separately charged her. </p><p>According to a civil lawsuit filed in Houston on April 26, 33-year-old Joseph McMullin was killed by a drunk driver on April 19, while out on a first date at a donut shop in Houston. Kristina Chambers, was charged with intoxication manslaughter by prosecutors on April 21, which was followed by the wrongful death lawsuit brought by the man's parents.</p><p>McMullin's family's lawyer Jesus Garcia told Insider McMullin was "loyal" and in "the prime of his life."</p><p>Surveillance video from the night of the crash shows Chambers' Porsche speeding onto a curb where McMullin was walking, and striking him, sending him into the air, while Chambers drives away before crashing into a pole, <a href="https://www.khou.com/article/news/crime/man-hit-by-speeding-car-montrose-houston/285-9607e4e1-0ea2-4f72-ac23-68a180b06a02" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to KHOU-TV. </a></p><p>Garcia told Insider that the surveillance video of the crash, details around how much Chambers had to drink, and where she drank that night, would be key facts for the case.</p><p>"It didn't have to happen, and it was all in the control of Ms. Chambers," Garcia said.</p><p>Prosecutors said that Chambers was four times over the state's legal alcohol limit, and had drugs in her system, <a href="https://www.khou.com/article/news/crime/westheimer-man-hit-first-date/285-2df934bb-c4d4-418b-94d6-2ec1c76b90de" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per KHOU-TV.</a></p><p>Chambers is the wife of a wealthy Houston trader named Xuan Si, <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/04/28/houston-woman-kristina-chambers-plows-porsche-into-man-on-first-date-killing-him-cops/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to The New York Post.</a> </p><p>Chambers' attorney did not immediately return Insider's request for comment, but has denied the allegations, <a href="https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/crime/article/kristina-chambers-crash-lawsuit-18076830.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per The Houston Chronicle.</a></p><p>McMullin's family is seeking at least $1 million in damages on the grounds of negligence and wrongful death, according to their civil lawsuit.</p>

A man on a 1st date and 'in the prime of his life' was killed after a Texas woman drunkenly crashed her Porsche onto a city sidewalk at 100 mph, prosecutors say

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="12054288" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="arnold-schwarzenegger" source="Orion">Arnold Schwarzenegger</keyword> was involved in a <keyword id="11972295" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="car-crash" source="Orion">car crash</keyword> in Brentwood in <keyword id="11940480" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="los-angeles" source="Orion">Los Angeles</keyword> on Friday, LAPD said.</li><li>Police said one person had minor injuries, but it was not Schwarzenegger.</li></ul><p>Arnold Schwarzenegger was involved in a multi-car crash on Friday afternoon in Los Angeles, police said.</p><p>The Los Angeles Police Department told <a href="https://abc7.com/arnold-schwarzenegger-car-crash-brentwood-sunset-boulevard/11496858/">KABC</a> the crash involved four vehicles and left one person with minor injuries. It occurred at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Allenford Avenue in Brentwood, an upscale suburban neighborhood.</p><p>LAPD told the outlet Schwarzenegger was not injured and that no arrests were made in connection to the crash.</p><p>CBSLA reported police said Schwarzenegger was driving his Yukon SUV when he turned left through a "red arrow" signal, colliding with a red Prius that was making a U-turn. Police said Schwarzenegger's vehicle rolled over and also collided with other vehicles, including a Porsche Cayenne, the outlet said.</p><p>LAPD indicated drugs and alcohol were not involved, <a href="https://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2022/01/21/arnold-schwarzenegger-involved-in-car-crash-on-sunset-boulevard/">CBSLA</a> reported.</p><p>Representatives for Schwarzenegger and LAPD did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.</p>

It had the fastest acceleration speed they'd seen, but only under special testing conditions.</li><li>Most high-performance vehicles do not require a set-up process to hit high acceleration speeds.</li></ul><p>The <a href="https://www.insider.com/tesla-model-s-plaid-deliveries-begin-at-fremont-factory-event-2021-6">Tesla Model S Plaid</a> can go from 0 to 60 in less than two seconds, but it requires a lengthy set-up process, according to a <a href="https://www.motortrend.com/cars/tesla/model-s/2021/2022-tesla-model-s-plaid-first-test-review/">report from MotorTrend.</a></p><p>The magazine tested the vehicle out and detailed an eight to 15-minute process that the <keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword> must undergo in order to achieve its maximum acceleration speed.</p><p>The process is far from typical for most high performance <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword>. Some of the fastest cars out there including the <keyword id="45673" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Porsche">Porsche</keyword> Taycan Turbo S, which can reportedly go from 0 to 60 in 2.6 seconds, as well as Tesla CEO <keyword id="6355315" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="elon-musk">Elon Musk</keyword>'s <keyword id="64813" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="McLaren">McLaren</keyword> F1 (which he purchased in 1999 and <a href="https://www.thedrive.com/news/32191/did-you-know-elon-musk-wrecked-an-uninsured-mclaren-f1">crashed a year later</a>), which can go from 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds without a set-up routine. But, MotorTrend <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/21/success/tesla-model-s-plaid-motortrend/index.html">told CNN</a> the process is not a new one for high-performance Teslas, and the latest model has even streamlined the process so that it does not have to be redone for each run with the vehicle.</p><p>Tesla has already set a related record with the vehicle. Jay Leno drove the car on his CNBC show "Jay Leno's Garage," where he said he broke the quarter-mile land speed record for a production car.</p><p>MotorTrend said the Tesla hit the fastest 0 to 60 acceleration speed they've ever tested in a production car, (0 to 60 in 1.98 seconds), but said most drivers would not be able to hit those speeds on a regular road. Tesla representatives required MotorTrend to test the vehicle's top acceleration speed using the sticky end at the starting line of a race track - a surface most drivers will never encounter. Though, MotorTrend noted the Tesla's performance was still impressive. Tesla did not respond to a request for comment from Insider.</p><p>In order to hit the top 0 to 60 acceleration speed, the car must be put in Drag Strip Mode, which can be found as a setting on the Tesla's main screen, MotorTrend reported. </p><p>The driver must then wait for eight to 15 minutes for the vehicle to prepare for the exercise as it heats or cools the batteries to the required temperature and cools the vehicle's electric motors, the publication said.</p><p>After the set-up process is complete, the driver can push down with one foot on the brake and the other on the accelerator. With the brake and accelerator all the way down to the floor, the car achieves a "cheetah stance" in which the Tesla's front end drops down. Once the brake is released the car will hit its maximum acceleration speed.</p><p>MotorTrend writer Christian Seabaugh told CNN that the car still has an impressive acceleration speed even without putting the vehicle in Drag Strip Mode. He said it can go 0 to 60 in about 2.5 seconds by "just stomping on the throttle."</p><p>The <keyword id="9996334" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tesla-model-s-plaid">Tesla Model S Plaid</keyword> began deliveries earlier this month, after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-june-delivery-for-fastest-car-model-s-plaid-2021-5">Musk announced it would be the fastest production car ever made.</a> </p>

After options, it came to $84,090.</li></ul><p>Given the plethora of available compact luxury SUVs these days, you'd almost think the <keyword id="2188881" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Porsche-Macan">Porsche Macan</keyword> would vanish into a sea of jelly bean-shaped anonymity. You'd be wrong. You'd be <em>so</em> wrong.</p><p><a href="https://jalopnik.com/the-2019-porsche-macan-handles-better-than-a-crossover-1830850009base">Even in base-trim, the Macan is a riot to drive</a>. But today, we're here to talk about the Macan GTS. In the Macan's four-trim lineup, the GTS ranks second from the top below the range-topping Macan Turbo. And while you might be quick to dismiss the GTS model because it isn't the most powerful or most expensive Macan there is, slow down. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Macan GTS._KL_22" height="3750" width="2500" msid="81604971" hostid="261"></div>For too long, buyers had to choose between either buying a sports car or an SUV. There was no compromise.<p>Now there is. </p><h2><strong>The 2020 Macan GTS: Voted most popular</strong></h2><p>Launched in 2014 as a smaller and sportier step down from the Cayenne, the Macan was refreshed for 2019 most significantly to get a <a href="https://jalopnik.com/this-thing-has-an-actual-name-1826419841">heckblende rear taillight</a>. Pre-refresh Macans have two separate taillights instead of one long one; this is the easiest way to tell them apart.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Macan GTS._KL_29" height="3750" width="2500" msid="81604974" hostid="261"></div>Currently, the Macan is Porsche's best-selling vehicle. <a href="https://newsroom.porsche.com/en_US/2021/company/porsche-cars-north-america-retail-sales-fourth-quarter-year-end-2020-23328.html">With 18,631 sold in 2020</a>, it beat the Cayenne by 539 units. <p>Now, it's plain as day that SUVs are the Porsche moneymakers. But the fact that the newer, smaller - and cheaper - Macan has stolen the top spot from the Cayenne in today's SUV-obsessed market speaks volumes to the car's popularity with buyers, which is well-earned.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Macan GTS._KL_3" height="1667" width="2500" msid="81604979" hostid="261"></div>The differences between the 2020 Macan GTS, which was what my loaner was, and the 2021 Macan GTS are minimal. Save for a few changes to the Premium Package Plus and the addition of Apple CarPlay, the two are essentially the same.<h2><strong>Details and safety ratings: A quick SUV</strong></h2><p>Powered by a 2.9-liter, twin-turbocharged V6, the Macan GTS produces a claimed 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. It has all-wheel drive as standard and Porsche's seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission.</p><div type="image" title="Porsche Macan GTS._OEM11" height="1667" width="2500" msid="81604982" hostid="261"></div>Porsche estimates the Macan GTS's top speed to be 162 mph, and its 0-to-60 acceleration time to be 4.7 seconds. That drops to 4.5 seconds with the addition of the Sport Chrono option.<p>Length comes to 15.4 feet and width comes to 6.4 feet. Curb weight is 4,370 pounds and total towing capacity comes to 4,409 pounds.</p><p>At 17.6 cubic feet with the rear seats upright, the Macan GTS doesn't have the roomiest trunk out there, but it'll fit a week's worth of groceries or a few weekend bags in a pinch. With a fuel tank capacity of 19.8 gallons, the Macan GTS returns 17 mpg in the city, 22 mpg on the highway, and 19 mpg combined.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Macan GTS._KL_45" height="1667" width="2500" msid="81604984" hostid="261"></div>The <keyword id="10964137" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="2020-porsche-macan-gts">2020 Porsche Macan GTS</keyword> has not been rated for crashworthiness by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Though, despite the lack of publicly available crash test ratings, the car still earned a <a href="https://www.consumerreports.org/car-safety/some-cars-will-never-be-crash-tested-crash-test-ratings/">Consumer Reports</a> recommendation.<h2><strong>What stands out: Tactile heaven</strong></h2><p>Porsche appears to be one of the last automakers to offer button-friendly interiors. There's an infotainment screen, obviously, but there are still buttons and dials for the various radio and climate controls. The speedometer and tachometer are still analog dials.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Macan GTS._KL_40" height="3750" width="2500" msid="81604988" hostid="261"></div>The most immediately delightful part of the Macan is its steering wheel. Petite and thin in your hands, the wheel is tidily minimalist, lacking in extraneous buttons. Instead, it has computer mouse-like scroll wheels for the volume on one side and for a few driver information menus on the other. That's it.<p>The selectable driver modes are located on a dial down by your right thumb that you can easily toggle by feel without taking your eyes off the road.</p><p>The rest of the Macan GTS's interior has some pretty great tactile feedback. The left-handed ignition clunks heavily when you turn it, kicking the car to life or putting it to sleep. The gear selector thunks resolutely into place. The paddle shifters feel like milled metal and clink if you tap on them. The scroll wheels on the steering wheel buzz cheerfully in their cradles. </p><p>When cars all inevitably switch to touchscreen setups, swipe functions, and engine start/stop buttons, this is the stuff I'll miss the most.</p><div type="image" title="Porsche Macan GTS._OEM7" height="1667" width="2500" msid="81604994" hostid="261"></div>Combine the tight and responsive steering with a lightning-fast transmission and a torquey engine and you've got something cracking exciting on your hands. With an SUV's ground clearance, you still sit high, yet somehow the chassis doesn't lean terribly much in the corners. Bafflingly, the car feels like it shrinks around you instead.<p>Though quiet when the sport exhaust isn't activated, the Macan GTS burbles and pops with V6 rasp encouragingly in Sport and Sport Plus modes. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Macan GTS._KL_33" height="1667" width="2500" msid="81604998" hostid="261"></div>All of these things urge you to drive with a bit more pep than you normally would. A bit more daringly. It rewards a heavier foot with punchy acceleration. A flick of the steering wheel with the nose-down eagerness of a dog in pursuit. And you finally feel it - that small smile tug at the corner of your mouth. Because the Macan GTS is <em>fun</em>, man. <h2><strong>What falls short: Too much of a good thing</strong></h2><p>There are two very minor grievances I had with the Macan GTS. The first is with the buttons.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Macan GTS._KL_39" height="3750" width="2500" msid="81605001" hostid="261"></div>I know! I just got done praising those very buttons. And as much as I love that they're there, the arrangement is a bit chaotic. A ridge of buttons adorns either side of the center console. Overhead, another fleet of them dances around the cabin light. <p>I'm sure once you get used to the placement you'll remember where everything is, but it's overwhelming at first. Before fleeing, he pulled out his phone and filmed the officers, some of whom were pinned under the truck, for more than three minutes.</p><p>In the video, he can be heard blaming the officers for ruining his car.</p><p>"Amazing. Absolutely amazing," he said, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/mar/10/richard-pusey-pleads-guilty-to-outraging-public-decency-after-melbourne-crash">according to the Australian Associated Press</a>. "All I wanted to do was go home and eat my sushi, and now you have f---ed my f---ing car."</p><p>Experts said Taylor was most likely still alive while Pusey was filming, the BBC reported. The police found that Pusey had shared the video with some of his friends.</p><p>Victoria's police minister said Pusey's comments were "completely sickening," according to the BBC.</p><p>Pusey pleaded guilty to outraging public decency as well as drug and speeding offenses. Each vehicle will have its own story.<p>"We wanted players to have full control over handling regardless of vehicle class and have a different experience driving each type," Czyżewski said. It is, as an emailed press release claims, "a link between the Cyberpunk universe in 2077 and our world today." "When it came to taking inspiration from manufactured cars - and concept cars - we'd focus more on smaller elements and themes, adapting them, blending them, or putting our own twist on them in some of our cars.</p><div type="image" title="Cyberpunk2077_911_screenshot_012_RGB_EN" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593739" hostid="261"></div>"So, when we look at other cyberpunk influences, from ​Blade Runner​, for instance, we weren't necessarily taking that style and putting it into our game, but more figuring out how to design our cars in such a way that, one day, they can stand alone as iconic cyberpunk style cars that are distinctly ours."<p>Judging from the game's trailers and demos, textures appear to be a big part of the immersive world. After the team finishes researching and compiling a database of both real and concept cars that would inspire the cars in the game, they build a conceptual 3D model that includes the crucial details like the lidar, license plates, and sonar.</p><div type="image" title="Makigai MaiMai P126" height="1080" width="1920" msid="79593742" hostid="261"></div>After that, a designer transforms the vehicle into something that'll be later on used in the game. This is the step where the model is finished with all its appropriate internal parts. Autonomous driving and electric cars are but some of the technology rapidly expanding to fill the space. Perhaps, Czyżewski guessed, everything will be AI-controlled and private car ownership will end. "They abandoned the cold, deadly elegance of Neomilitarism and returned to the roots of Kitsch, but gave it a fresh, new look. "So, Entropism cars are noticeably less elegant in their design and feature poorer quality materials because Night City was in a particularly rough state during that time.<p>"Neokitsch cars, on the other hand, are ultra-luxurious and reflect the immeasurable wealth of those who flaunt this style - a minuscule percentage of the population."</p><div type="image" title="Cyberpunk2077_911_screenshot_018_RGB_EN" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593760" hostid="261"></div>These ideas were no doubt inspired by real-world situations, such as <a href="https://www.autonews.com/article/20131014/GLOBAL/131019959/10-ways-the-1973-oil-embargo-changed-the-industry">how the oil crisis in the 1970s</a> crumbled the US domestic car market and accelerated sales from Japanese and European automakers, or how celebrities own <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kylie-jenner-luxury-car-collection-bugatti-rolls-royce">multimillion-dollar vehicle collections</a> while the average American drives a 12-year-old car.<p>Though it is a fictional game set nearly 60 years in the future, Cyberpunk 2077 does appear to address the social and class anxieties that very real societies struggle with today. It's clearly reflected in the choice of cars and their role in Night City. </p><div type="image" title="screen a mercenary on the rise en" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79593762" hostid="261"></div>The game even goes as far as to suggest that there will still be a reliance on fossil fuels decades from now - a future that may very well be our own, even if skyrocketing EV stock prices might have us convinced otherwise. <p>But as for how we get around in Night City? Cars are the main attraction.</p>

How Cyberpunk 2077 used real-world influence to design a slew of cars unique to the game and its communities

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-ramping-up-taycan-workforce-2019-10">Porsche's Taycan</a> received top marks from safety expert Euro NCAP.</li><li>The tests indicate overall good performance in crash protection and that the car is equipped with robust <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-dummy-car-helps-prevent-accidents-crash-test-autonomous-soft-2018-11">crash-avoidance technology.</a></li><li>Marginal whiplash protection in the event of a rear collision caused Euro NCAP to rate the Porsche Taycan less safe than some other plug-in electric cars, like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/s?q=tesla+model+3">Tesla's Model 3</a>.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.</a></li></ul><p><em>Following is a transcript of the video.</em></p><p><strong>Narrator: </strong>This is Porsche's $103,800 all-electric Taycan.</p><p>And this is Euro NCAP's side-pole test.</p><p>Taycan, meet side-pole test.</p><p>The side pole is one of safety expert Euro NCAP's most challenging tests. But check out how rigid the structure of the Taycan is. The roof barely deforms. And the A-pillar, the metal support on the side of the windshield? It doesn't even flex. A rigid structure, though, isn't the only thing that Porsche did to try to make the Taycan safe. With help from safety expert Euro NCAP, we broke down some of the features that put Porsche's all-electric sports car in the company of the safest cars of 2019 and also identified some improvement areas for the Taycan.</p><p>We talked about how rigid the structure of the Taycan is. Well, that shows itself again in crash tests like the frontal offset deformable barrier and the frontal full width test. In this test, where Euro NCAP sends the Taycan at 40 mph into a barrier representing another car, you can see how stable the Taycan's cabin is. In this diagram, the dummies representing the driver and passenger were green across the body, sustaining only slight injuries to the knees and femur. Euro NCAP reported this as "adequate" protection, a good result.</p><p>Now, while the rigidity of the Taycan may mean a more stable cabin, we've seen how passengers benefit in crashes where certain parts of the car around them actually give way or crumple, like a piece of paper. In crashes, these "crumple zones" dissipate the energy of a crash instead of passing it on to the passengers inside. For the Taycan, in the full-width barrier test, the protection of all critical body areas was "good" or "adequate" for both occupants, with the exception of the rear passenger's chest. The forces on the chest indicated a "marginal" level of protection, one step down from "adequate." The Porsche crumples, but perhaps how it crumples could be tweaked to improve the safety of the rear passenger in this type of collision.</p><p>In these seat and head-restraint tests, Euro NCAP propelled a dummy with a realistic spine on a sled at both 10 and 15 mph, mimicking a rear collision. This is the type of crash most likely to inflict a neck sprain or whiplash injury. In general, manufacturers design seats so the headrests are as close to the back of an occupant's head as possible. As you can see by the orange in these diagrams, Euro NCAP assessed only "marginal" protection for the seat and head restraints in both the front and rear seats.</p><p>We talked about how Euro NCAP assesses how safe the occupants of the Taycan are. But Euro NCAP also assesses how safe "vulnerable road users," your pedestrians and cyclists, are if a Taycan hits them. One of the ways Euro NCAP tests this is by dropping a weighted ball with sensors on it, which is meant to simulate a pedestrian or cyclist's head, on different parts of the hood. Euro NCAP rated protection as "good" or "adequate" at almost all test locations on the hood.</p><p>Part of the assessment of the Taycan's ability to keep people safe is the car's ability to recognize a dummy on the road and stop automatically. How did the Taycan do? Well, in these tests, the Taycan's autonomous emergency braking detected cyclists well and avoided or mitigated crashes in most cases. However, with pedestrians, the Taycan didn't do so well. In some tests at both night and day, the Taycan detected pedestrians and slowed but still injured the pedestrians.</p><p>Overall, Porsche's Taycan received a five-star rating by Euro NCAP, the same rating as Tesla's Model X, Ford's Explorer, and BMW's Z4, other cars in Euro NCAP's Executive class. While the Porsche Taycan scored five stars, it only scored in the eighth percentile of all five-star cars in its class tested in 2019, a group of 43 cars in total. While Euro NCAP assigned the Taycan "good" protection scores for many of the crashes simulated, a "marginal" whiplash rating in rear collisions for adult occupants and average detection of pedestrians are issues that Porsche can and should take a look at to improve the safety rating of the Taycan.</p>

Why Porsche's Taycan received a 5-star crash-test rating

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Tesla began to open some of its exclusive Supercharging stations to other electric vehicles earlier this year. </li><li>But the cords are designed for Teslas, meaning that owners of some other cars need to use two spaces to plug in. </li></ul><p>After years of teasers, Tesla began opening up its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-supercharger-charging-first-time-experience-compared-to-other-evs-2022-9">vast, exclusive network of Superchargers</a> to drivers of other electric vehicles in the US earlier this year.</p><p>There's just one kink that Elon Musk hasn't ironed out: The charging cables, which were designed for Teslas, aren't long enough to comfortably accommodate some other cars. It means non-Teslas have had to park awkwardly to plug in. Or worse yet, park in the wrong spot, blocking off two charging stalls instead of one. </p><p>In March, Tesla opened a handful of its roughly 1,700 US charging stations to non-Tesla vehicles. It accomplished this rather elegantly, by retrofitting what it calls a "Magic Dock," an adapter that automatically attaches to let <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chevy-bolt-euv-cheap-electric-car-suv-price-2022-12">Chevrolets</a>, Porsches, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bmw-ix-vs-mercedes-benz-eqs-electric-luxury-suv-compared-2023-3">BMWs</a> top up. (Tesla designed its own charging connector, while the rest of the industry uses a different standard.)</p>  <p>EV owners flocked to the stations to test them out, with many marveling online at the seamless process. But they also noticed a glaring flaw in the plan. All Teslas have their charging in the same spot on the back-left corner of the car. Superchargers themselves — and the surrounding parking spots — are designed to accommodate Teslas only. </p><p>That poses a problem when other electric cars, which may have their charging ports elsewhere, try to charge up. </p><p>For example, when <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/youtuber-mkbhd-charging-rivian-tesla-supercharger-chaos-2023-3">tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee</a> <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-oaVLRH-js">took his Rivian truck to a Tesla station</a> in New York, he had to park in the wrong spot — effectively blocking another charging stall — in order to plug in. The same happened when Electrek, an electric-car blog, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSscxmAmKHU" target="_blank" rel="noopener">brought a Chevrolet Bolt</a> to a Supercharger. </p><p>In a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KN9D06LIAo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent YouTube video</a>, Dave Conner, of the automotive channel Out of Spec Reviews, charged a Genesis GV60 electric SUV at a Tesla station while taking up two spots. He noted that the situation could pose problems, particularly during times when chargers are in high demand. </p><p>"People are going to start to get upset here with the fact that Tesla has delivered this Magic Dock station capability, but they haven't thought through the logistics as far as how people are going to charge," Conner said. </p><p>In <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKRI7pnRA0k" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a video on his State of Charge YouTube channel</a>, Tom Moloughney could barely get Tesla's cable to reach the charging port of his Ford F-150 Lightning, but succeeded (while blocking an extra space) after repositioning his vehicle extremely close to a bollard in front of the parking space. He spoke with a Lucid Air owner at the same location who said he would have had to "crash my bumper into the charging station" to top up at one of the standard stalls, so he chose the lone Supercharger off to the side that was positioned differently. </p><p>Tesla owners sometimes experience <a href="https://insideevs.com/news/580338/is-this-future-waiting-charge-tesla-supercharger-station/">long lines at charging stations</a>, particularly during popular travel times. Ford, Chevy, and Hyundai owners clogging up Superchargers could frustrate Tesla owners further if the company fails to roll out a fix before deploying Magic Docks to more locations. The simplest solution, it seems, would be to add longer cables that can reach the charging ports on more vehicles. </p><p>Tesla's chargers being open to anyone is set to be a boon for EV owners who currently rely on an inconsistent patchwork of charging providers. <ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>A growing group of enthusiasts are transforming their classic hot rods to EVs.</strong></li><li><strong>Some pull parts from crashed Teslas to do it.</strong></li></ul><p>There's a growing group of enthusiasts transforming their classic hot rods and vintage muscle cars into fast-moving electric vehicles.</p><p>"It used to be that it was really just a backyard hobby and guys were taking crashed Teslas and taking the guts out of them and putting them into a conversion hot rod of some sort, whether it's a '69 Camaro or whatever it might be," Mike Spagnola, CEO of the Specialty Equipment Market Association, told Insider. "We're seeing that more and more, as the next generation of hot rodders come up, that they do want to do an EV conversion. That's a huge burgeoning market."</p><div type="image" title="1974 BMW 2002 5-Speed electric conversion" height="626" width="835" msid="98773263" hostid="261"></div><p>The proof? Spagnola's organization needed a massive 20,000 square feet at its annual conference this past year to accommodate the companies showing off battery packs, electric motors, harnesses, and other components needed to retrofit vehicles. (See things like <a href="https://www.intelligentliving.co/vw-launches-electric-conversion-kit-beetle/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Volkswagen's conversion kit</a>.) Auction platform Bring a Trailer has started to sell classic rides converted to EV, like a <a href="https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1975-porsche-914-43/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1975 Porsche</a> and <a href="https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1974-bmw-2002-111/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1974 BMW</a>. And two well-known hot rodders who work on these projects told Insider that business is booming.</p><div type="image" title="1975 Porsche 914 EV Conversion" height="1002" width="1337" msid="98773266" hostid="261"></div><p>Converting gas-powered vehicles to electric isn't a new concept, but it has been gaining traction, especially as EV tech has advanced. </p><p>"The real shift was really, Tesla," Greg Abbott, who goes by the name Reverend Gadget, and is CEO of conversion shop Left Coast EV, told Insider. </p><div type="image" title="1984 DeLorean conversion" height="1814" width="2419" msid="98773268" hostid="261"></div><h2>So how do you convert a gas-car to an EV?</h2><p>An EV conversion requires removing a car's engine and adding a battery pack, electric motors, high-voltage cables, and instrumentation, according to the <a href="https://afdc.energy.gov/vehicles/electric_conversions.html#:~:text=All%2DElectric%20Vehicle%20Conversions,%2Dvoltage%20cables%2C%20and%20instrumentation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Alternative Fuels Data Center</a> — all while making sure there's enough space to accommodate these parts, and ensuring the original chassis can support the additional weight. </p><p>Gadget, who was featured in the "Revenge of the Electric Car" documentary, starts by taking batteries out of crashed Teslas. He started with two or three conversions per year; he has since been working up to converting a dozen. </p><div type="image" title="1972 Brazilian Volkswagen Samba" height="1908" width="2544" msid="98773270" hostid="261"></div><p>"If it's a freshwater flood car, no big deal. Saltwater flood car, probably junk," Gadget explained. "If it's been in an accident like a head-on or a rear-ender, it's fine. If it's been in a side crash, you might have some battery damage, so you must be taking a risk. But the cars are built so well that I'd say 95% of the time, the battery packs have nothing wrong with it."</p><p>Then, there are plenty of structural, electronics, electrical, and engineering tasks beyond that.</p><p>"We can't just pull the parts out of a Tesla and use them," Gadget said. "It's not just a cut and paste, there's a lot of work. Part of that is getting the systems down."</p><div type="image" title="EV West" height="1079" width="1439" msid="98773274" hostid="261"></div><h2>Converters won't just rework any car </h2><p>Gadget jokes that his cutoff is if a vehicle has plastic parts, like bumpers — in all seriousness, he prefers classics from the 1960s and 1970s.</p><p>Certain vehicles make more sense to convert than others, like those with cult-followings and whose values are appreciative, or those that have no other alternative for staying on the road, said Michael Bream, <a href="https://www.today.com/video/how-a-california-auto-shop-is-bringing-vintage-cars-to-the-future-1450459715959" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CEO of EV West</a>.</p><div type="image" title="1974 VW Thing with EV West’s bolt-in Tesla Model S motor and custom Tesla battery pack" height="1079" width="1439" msid="98773276" hostid="261"></div><p>He started it in 2008, has built electric hot rods, project cars, and race cars, taken them to events and shows, and uses that experience to develop products for conversions. Bream has worked with collectors like Jay Leno and Tony Hawk. </p><p>"No amount of money could make a modern equivalent of a 1965 Porsche. So if you want to continue with that experience, one of the only alternatives available to you is electrification," Bream said. "In other cases, I think financially it does make sense. If you try to maintain a vintage Porsche, that's going to be far more expensive than putting a Tesla drivetrain in it."</p><div type="image" title="1968 Porsche 912 with EV West’s bolt-in Tesla Model S motor and battery pack" height="456" width="609" msid="98773278" hostid="261"></div><p>A conversion might be an enthusiast's second vehicle. Despite misconceptions about EVs, speed, and weight, these have substantial horsepower and huge amounts of torque.</p><p>Either way, it'll cost you: The two experts estimate the cost being anywhere from $20,000 to $30,000 on parts, and a similar amount in time and labor, for as much as $50,000 or more. It depends on the vehicle's performance, speed, how sophisticated, and how updated customers want their vehicles to be.</p><div type="image" title="1979 VW Bus Adventure Wagen with a Netgain Hyper 9 motor and custom Tesla battery pack" height="1536" width="2048" msid="98773281" hostid="261"></div><h2>They're car guys</h2><p>Not all enthusiasts are on board with all-electric conversions. Rick Drewry, who restores classic cars and serves as the collector car and motorcycle product expert in the claims division at American Modern Insurance Group, says he expects more buy-in for hybrid conversions.</p><p>"You'll see electric cars actually beat gasoline cars with the same horsepower out of the gate, but when they're absolutely quiet, you'll lose some people," Drewry said. We are not trying to take gas away from anyone," Bream said. "All of a sudden, I can enjoy hot rodding with my son the way that my father enjoyed hot rodding with me when I was young.</p><p>"We're here because we're hot rodders and we like to make slow things go fast," Bream added. "In this quest to make super fast, super fun-to-drive cars," he said, "we inadvertently created cars that are seen as being more environmentally responsible." </p>
