<ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="12319548" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="porsche-taycan" source="Orion">Porsche Taycan</keyword> EV is starting to outsell the brand's iconic 911. </li><li>During the first nine months of 2021, <keyword id="12003683" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="porsche" source="Orion">Porsche</keyword> sold several hundred more Taycans than 911s. </li></ul><p>In only its second full year in production, Porsche's first electric model is starting to outsell its longtime flagship sports car, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2020-porsche-911-carrera-s-review-price-specs-photos-power-2020-8">the 911</a>.</p><p>It's the latest sign that <keyword id="11897958" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric-vehicles" source="Orion">electric vehicles</keyword>, which have made up a tiny fraction of global vehicle sales for years, are gaining traction. </p><p>Porsche sold 28,640 Taycans worldwide during the first nine months of 2021, the company said Friday. It delivered 27,972 911s over that period. The Taycan is also outpacing the 911 in the US, selling 1,861 units compared with the 911's 1,621. </p><p>Porsche launched the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-taycan-4s-review-0-60-price-range-ev-electric-2020-11">Taycan</a> in 2019 as a high-powered, four-door sport sedan that competes with the Tesla Model S. In early 2021, Porsche added a new <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-taycan-4s-review-ev-electric-sedan-tesla-lucid-mercedes-2021-3">base version of the Taycan</a> that costs $82,700. It recently introduced a roomier, station-wagon variant called the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-taycan-4s-turbo-s-cross-turismo-ev-wagon-ebikes-2021-3">Taycan Cross Turismo</a>. The Cross Turismo rides a bit higher than the regular Taycan so owners can take it on dirt roads and gravel paths. </p><p>Porsche, a brand under the Volkswagen Group umbrella, wants at least 80%of  the vehicles it sells to be either fully electric or hybrid by 2030. A battery-powered version of its popular Macan SUV is due in 2023, but don't expect an electric 911 anytime soon. </p><p>CEO Oliver Blume, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/03/19/porsches-ambitious-ev-plans-dont-include-an-all-electric-911.html">told reporters</a> in March that the 911 will be the last Porsche to go electric, if it ever does. </p>

Porsche is selling more electric Taycans than its flagship sports car

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="6605684" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Taycan">Taycan</keyword> is <keyword id="45673" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Porsche">Porsche</keyword>'s first EV and comes in four trims: the $79,900 base Taycan, $104,000 4S, $151,000 Turbo, and $185,000 Turbo S.</li><li>My 4S loaner came to $143,690 after options.</li><li>On paper, Porsche's iconic gas-powered 911 Turbo S is faster. But in practice, the Taycan 4S feels like it has warp drive.</li></ul><p>The luxury electric car space is saturated with the likes of Tesla, Lucid, Polestar, Audi, and Jaguar. But one of the biggest names to recently enter is the Taycan sport sedan, which is, quite literally, the Porsche of <keyword id="312660" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="EVS">EVs</keyword>. That alone is worth paying attention to.</p><p>I'm not typically one to doggedly heap praise on a brand, but I'm making a begrudging exception here. Porsche knows what it's doing. The Porsche 911<em> is</em> the 911, and the 718 models are modern automotive perfection. Even its compact SUV, the Macan, handles like a sports car way more than it has any right to. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_31" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79430964" hostid="261"></div><p>My point here is, this is a company that knows how to build a car, and build one well.</p><p>The Taycan is Porsche's first attempt at making an EV - a first attempt with all the money and resources that the automotive giant Volkswagen Group can throw behind it. </p><p>If that didn't spoil the review verdict for you already, I will: It's a damn fine first crack.</p><h2><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_14" height="3750" width="2500" msid="79430966" hostid="261"></div>From 'Mission E' to 'soul of a spirited young horse'</strong></h2><p>The Porsche Taycan started life as a concept called the Mission E, which <a href="https://money.cnn.com/2015/09/15/autos/porsche-debuts-first-electric-car-mission-e/index.html">debuted at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show</a>. The Mission E spent the next four years tooling around, <a href="https://jalopnik.com/porsche-is-considering-a-sporty-electric-coupe-based-on-1823715771">sparking rumors</a> and noiselessly touring places like <a href="https://jalopnik.com/the-porsche-mission-e-ushers-in-our-terrifyingly-fast-a-1819911348">Germany's famed Nürburgring track</a>. </p><p>Finally, <a href="https://www.automobilemag.com/news/porsche-taycan-first-impressions-from-the-2019-frankfurt-auto-show-floor/">at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show</a>, the production version of Porsche's first EV appeared with a Turkish name that <a href="https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/products/porsche-taycan-name-meaning-soul-spirited-young-horse-electric-sports-car-electromobility-emobility-16292.html">roughly translates</a> to "soul of a spirited young horse." Sure!</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_2" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79430969" hostid="261"></div>To be extra certain there would be no pronunciation mixups, Porsche even <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8oixMu703s">made a video</a> telling us how to say the car's name properly - just like <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Im2eYuGdmfY">the video it made telling us how to say "Porsche" correctly</a> because <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxKlWWb-UuU">certain clowns</a> needed educating.<p>Currently, <a href="https://www.porsche.com/usa/models/taycan/taycan-models/">there are four versions</a> of the Taycan available: the base-model Taycan, the 4S, the Turbo, and the range-topping Turbo S. Yes, I know neither of those cars are turbocharged. Words mean things until they don't.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_7" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79430970" hostid="261"></div>The loaner that Porsche kicked me for a weekend was the 4S. For all intents and purposes, it is the base Taycan model - though from the way it's priced, you wouldn't think so.<h2><strong>It weighs, like, more than two tons</strong></h2><p>Like a Tesla, the Taycan uses a skateboard design: All of the batteries are located along the floor of the vehicle, which lowers the center of gravity and frees up space for two trunks. System voltage comes to 800 volts instead of the typical 400 volts, which <a href="https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/products/taycan/battery-18557.html">Porsche says</a> cuts charging time, decreases weight, and allows for high performance. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_54" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79430973" hostid="261"></div>The 4S is not the range-topping Taycan, but that's no issue at all. The thing is plenty powerful and fast, with a <a href="https://www.porsche.com/usa/models/taycan/taycan-models/taycan-4s/">claimed</a> 562 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque from its optional Performance Battery Plus upgrade. Porsche estimates a 0-to-60-mph sprint to happen in 3.8 seconds with launch control, along with a 155-mph top speed. <p>Charging <a href="https://www.porsche.com/usa/models/taycan/taycan-models/taycan-4s/">claims</a> are as follows: When plugged into an AC outlet with 9.6 kW, the 4S takes 9.5 hours to charge from 0 to 100%. A 50-kW DC charger takes 93 minutes from 5% to 80%. A fast-charging DC charger takes 22.5 minutes to charge the car from 5% to 80%.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_OEM_6" height="1406" width="2500" msid="79430979" hostid="261"></div>Using the EVgo app one night, I found a nearby 50-kW CCS charger. After about 25 minutes of charging, the battery went from 54% to 71%. The whole thing cost me $8.96.<p>The EPA <a href="https://insideevs.com/news/419001/porsche-taycan-4s-203-miles-epa-range/">gives</a> the Taycan 4S with the Performance Battery Plus a range of 203 miles. The Taycan <a href="https://www.porsche.com/usa/models/taycan/taycan-models/taycan-4s/">measures</a> 16.3 feet long, 6.5 feet wide, and 4.5 feet tall. Its rear trunk has a cargo capacity of 14.3 cubic feet. Curb weight comes to 4,947 pounds.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_85" height="966" width="2014" msid="79430980" hostid="261"></div>As of this writing, the Porsche Taycan has not yet been rated for crashworthiness by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.<h2><strong>What stands out: Warp drive</strong></h2><p>On paper, Porsche's gas-powered 911 Turbo S has the Taycan 4S beat. The Turbo S has more horsepower, more torque, a quicker estimated 0-to-60 time. You <em>know</em> the Turbo S is faster. But when you floor the "go" pedal in the Taycan, all that knowledge flies out the window alongside your grasp on reality.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_8" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79430982" hostid="261"></div>Maybe it's because you have no audible warning that the car is doing what it's about to do. Up until this point, I never realized how much I subconsciously relied on engine noise to brace for acceleration. In the Taycan, acceleration just <em>happens</em>. No warning. No tip-off. <p>One second, you're cruising along quietly and the next, you're being shot forward through space-time, fired from what feels like the universe's biggest bowstring. You're warping forward so powerfully you've left your stomach in the previous galaxy. And you, the one with brake pedal access, are the one who controls when the passenger screaming stops. This is a good thing, by the way.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_68" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79430986" hostid="261"></div>Does it ever get old? Probably! But as far as party tricks go, it's a pretty neat one. <p>If you do want some sound, putting the car in Sport Plus mode or activating the "engine" "noise" option will pipe in some artificial motor noise (it sounds like a musical generator). But it still doesn't adequately prepare you for the instant torque. Nothing does until you've done it to yourself a few times.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_77" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79430988" hostid="261"></div>Unlike in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/polestar-2-review-price-ev-volvo-tesla-specs-horsepower-electric-2020-8">the Polestar 2</a>, I never had complaints about too-light steering in the Taycan. It was always nice and heavy, the smallest of inputs translating to a subsequent wiggle in the nose. Paired with the low center of gravity and the futuristic <em>whee</em> of the motors, the Taycan slingshots in and out of corners with acute, alien-like precision and delight.<p>From the outside, the car is stunning. Sleek and purposeful, it doesn't look that different from the Mission E concept we first saw five years ago. Mine wore a wonderful coat of Mamba Green Metallic Paint, 21-inch gold Mission E Design Wheels, and a set of carbon-ceramic brakes with yellow calipers. Life is too short for boring cars. Dress mine up like a mobster, please.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_78" height="3750" width="2500" msid="79430990" hostid="261"></div>And despite the sloping profile, the back seats offer decent headroom and legroom. My loaner came with only two rear seats, but a third one can be optioned in at an additional cost.<h2><strong>What falls short: Could use a hatch</strong></h2><p>Inside the Taycan, I could count the number of physical switchgears on one hand. Aside from what was on the steering wheel, the driver's only physical touchpoints were the gear selector lever and the car's on/off button. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_1" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79430993" hostid="261"></div>The Taycan's user experience wasn't as hateful as other all-touch setups. Its screens offered a degree of haptic feedback, so you knew if your fingers were actually selecting something without always looking down. <p>But even things you expect to have some kind of hard switch do not. The headlight controls, for example, are operated via touchscreen off to the side of the driver information cluster.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_41" height="3750" width="2500" msid="79430996" hostid="261"></div>A defining driving characteristic of many EVs is their one-pedal driving capability. It's a fun thing you can do with the accelerator where, after learning to modulate the car's regenerative braking, you can control its forward driving without the use of the brake pedal.<p>Unfortunately, no Taycan will have one-pedal driving. All regenerative braking will be handled through the brake pedal, according to <a href="https://www.autoweek.com/news/technology/a2150661/heres-why-you-cant-drive-porsche-taycan-or-any-future-porsche-evs-one-pedal/">Autoweek</a>. From what I understand, people have a love/hate relationship with one-pedal driving, so take this news as you will.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_82" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79430997" hostid="261"></div>Rear visibility is also a bit challenging in the Taycan. The rear window is small, the roofline slopes downward, and the C-pillars are thick. They do not make for easy over-the-shoulder glances.<p>But I actually saw the Taycan's biggest shortcoming when I parked it next to a Tesla Model S. We were loading up our cars with supplies, the Model S owner and I. The difference was that the Model S's trunk is a hatch. The Taycan's is not. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_36" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79430999" hostid="261"></div>Anyone who's used a hatch-style trunk knows that they make loading and unloading cargo much easier. It makes all of the trunk accessible, not just the half that's closest to you. And there's more usable vertical room! Hatch all of the sedans, I say.<h2><strong>Competitor comparison: $$$$</strong></h2><p>In terms of range, the Taycan, unfortunately, brings up the rear behind the Tesla Model S (<a href="https://www.tesla.com/models/design#battery">402 miles estimated</a>) and the upcoming Lucid Air (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucid-motors-air-debut-cost-specs-price-sale-date-ev-2020-9#there-will-be-at-least-four-versions-of-the-air-available-9">406 miles estimated for the base model</a>).</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_22" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79431002" hostid="261"></div>And it is quite expensive. The Taycan 4S starts (<em>starts!</em>) at $103,800 and goes all the way up to $185,000 for the Turbo S model. In January, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-taycan-price-base-ev-turbo-4s-tesla-model-s-2021-1">Porsche added a base-model Taycan</a> to its lineup with a starting MSRP of $79,900. This still makes it about $10,000 more expensive than the Model S, however.<p>Then we get into the options, because it's a Porsche and the options list is longer than a diner menu. Instead of waffles, corned beef hash, and club sandwiches, it's multi-thousand-dollar brake kits and frivolous vanity features. Ready? </p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_18" height="3750" width="2500" msid="79431005" hostid="261"></div>My loaner came with Mamba Green Metallic paint ($800), "Taycan 4S" rear logo in high-gloss black ($270), tire-sealing compound and electric air compressor ($70), carbon-ceramic brakes with yellow calipers ($9,080), wheels painted in Satin Aurum ($1,290), 21-inch Mission E Design wheels ($4,680) interior accents in neodyme ($650), the Performance Battery Plus ($6,580), mobile charger connect ($1,120), high-gloss black window trim ($400), the Performance Package ($6,430), and the Premium Package ($7,170).<p>All of that, plus the delivery/processing/handling fee, brought my loaner's MSRP up to $143,690. It's a very expensive car.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_56" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79431007" hostid="261"></div>But as is increasingly the case with EVs, the whole thing comes down to the user experience and brand preference. In the Taycan, you're getting something that's undeniably sporty and finished in that known Porsche way: tight, buttoned down, serious.<p>When taking my friend for a ride, he jokingly asked if the car had <a href="https://jalopnik.com/tesla-introduces-romance-mode-and-on-demand-fart-noises-1831215895">a whoopie cushion feature</a>.</p><p>Of course not. This is a car built by adults. </p><h2><strong><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_5" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79431011" hostid="261"></div>Our impressions: Heavy but planted</strong></h2><p>Getting into any Porsche product expecting it to be bad is like thinking Lewis Hamilton <a href="https://www.espn.com/f1/story/_/id/30340690/where-lewis-hamilton-f1-championship-trophy">will lose a race</a>. Kind of like gravity or celestial movement, it's just not something you bet against. The Taycan is no exception. </p><p>There are, of course, a few things that feel a bit half-baked - the rear visibility, for one. Plus, the piped-in fake motor noise is rather gimmicky and at odds with what is otherwise a very serious car. But in terms of <em>feeling</em> quality and driving like a roller coaster, the Taycan absolutely nails it. </p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_70" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79431013" hostid="261"></div>Is it worth six figures? I don't know.<p>But I can tell you this. I liked the Taycan quite a bit. It's not built on an <a href="https://www.automobilemag.com/news/2020-mini-cooper-se-electric-vehicle-review-photos-price-range-performance-specs/">internal-combustion engine platform that's been repurposed for an EV</a>, so there aren't any glaringly obvious passenger or cargo room compromises. Sitting in the back does not give you the distinct feeling that you're astride a battery pack.</p><p>The Taycan weighs more than two tons, but it conducts itself like a very planted sports car. The optional rear-axle steering helped with maneuverability in tight spaces. It cruised quietly and smoothly on the highway when it wasn't gluing my passengers to their seatbacks.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_73" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79431016" hostid="261"></div>I understand that Porsche positions itself as a top-dollar brand, but I still did a double-take when the Taycan's price was first announced. I might have even used an expletive that rhymes with "duck off." If it's one thing the EV space does <em>not</em> need, it's another six-figure toy priced exclusively for the rich.<p>Perhaps, though, this is a similar method to Tesla's: Launch the expensive, halo model first to get people excited about the idea and the brand, and then launch the cheaper volume seller.</p><div type="image" title="2020 Porsche Taycan 4S_KL_60" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79431019" hostid="261"></div>It would explain why the Taycan is a sedan rather than an SUV. Up next is most likely the electric Macan, <a href="https://www.motor1.com/news/445085/porsche-macan-electric-crossover-renderings/">believed to appear in 2022 or thereabouts</a>. The 79.2 kWh battery will allow for around 523 horsepower, and the 93.4 kWh battery will allow for around 563 horsepower.</p><p>European dealerships will receive the Taycan 4S in January. In other words, it looks a lot like the car it will replace. Although a bit more attractive. </p><p>Porsche will launch its new off-roader in Cayenne and Cayenne S variants.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Porsche</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The standard Cayenne will get a 340 horsepower, 3.0 liter, turbocharged V6 engine. All Cayennes get a new eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission designed for to deliver quicker and smoother shifts both on and off the road. The company's Porsche Traction Management all-wheel-drive system is also standard across all Cayenne variants.</p><p>According to Porsche, the Cayenne can hit 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds and reach a track top speed of 152 mph. Porsche's flagship SUV just got a complete makeover

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/porsche">Porsche</a> has one of its most active state-of-the-art factories in Leipzig, Germany.</li><li>Since opening in 2002 the plant has produced over 160,000 vehicles per year.</li><li>It's responsible for manufacturing Porsche's Panamera luxury sedan and Macan SUV.</li></ul><p><em>The following is a transcript of the video.</em></p><p>In the automotive industry and car buying world, the name Porsche remains synonymous with luxury and high-performance. <span>After over 70 years of churning out one iconic vehicle after another, it's clear why the brand maintains an acclaimed reputation. For those wondering what goes into building cars of such quality, the answer can be found at Porsche's factory in Leipzig, Germany. Since opening its doors in 2002, the facility has been responsible for manufacturing over 160,000 vehicles per year. Here the automaker manufactures its popular Panamera executive car and Macan SUV.</span></p><p><span>The process starts in the factory's two body shops. A total of 475 robots are used to assemble the Panamera's frame and outer shell, while 387 help put together what will become the Macan. The two models are built from hundreds of individual steel and aluminum parts using a combination of flow drilling, punch riveting, laser beam welding, and clinching. Once acceptance inspections are completed by workers, it's on to the paint shop.</span></p><p><span>The first coat of paint each vehicle receives is an electrophoretic coating used for corrosion protection. Each body is dipped in a basin of electrophoretic dip paint for five minutes and turned on its axis for maximum coverage. Next, the welding seams of the vehicle are sealed with special PVC materials. Painting robots apply filler on the inside and outside of the vehicle that protects the topcoat against damages while simultaneously boosting its brilliance. Finally, the basecoat and clearcoat are applied before the body is put through a 35-minute drying process at 275° F. After drying, all vehicles are put through an intense visual inspection in the paint shop's "light tunnel" that are fitted with long strips of LED tubes.</span></p><p><span>The assembly line is where freshly-painted body shells become luxury performance cars. All doors are removed to allow employees to begin installing the vehicle's cockpit. Depending on the version and fitting, a cockpit may consist of up to 200 individual parts. Vehicle doors are taken to a separate line where they are fitted with windows, outside mirrors, exterior door handles, seals and trims. The vehicle's underbody is then assembled, being fitted with brake lines, fuel lines, the fuel tank and more. Next, robots fit the front and back windows and then bond them into place. The main headlights, rear and front seats, side airbags, the battery, and accelerator pedal are also installed. The iconic Porsche badge is then fit into place and all doors are reattached. The transmission and powertrain components are attached to the delivered engine, which is put through extensive quality control testing. An automated guided vehicle system is then used for "marrying" the engine, chassis, and body to one another. Following the climactic "marriage" and engine wiring, fuel, coolant, and brake fluid are filled into the vehicle, and all four wheels are mounted.</span></p><p><span>After some last-minute tuning and time on the chassis dynamometer, the entire process concludes with a thorough inspection that takes place on the factory's test track.</span></p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p><p class="caption">Porsche Macan.</p></div><p></p></div></div>In 2015, Porsche had its best year in company history.</p><p>Company executives reported today that revenue and profits both surged 25% to $24 billion and $3.8 billion respectively.</p><p>At the same time, unit sales jumped 19% last year to 225,000 cars worldwide. </p><p>Thus, the company hit its goal to sell 200,000 cars globally three years ahead of schedule. </p><p>At the presentation of the financial results, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume called the company's performance "extraordinary even by Porsche standards."</p><p>Although Porsche is best known for its iconic sports cars, the company's financial and sales performance has largely been driven by the success of its crossover SUVs.</p><p>Worldwide, the Cayenne and Macan accounted for 68% of all Porsche sales. With 80,000 units delivered, the Macan outsold the 911, Boxster, Cayman, 918 and Panamera combined. </p><p>Porsche's single largest market was China with more than 58,000 cars sold while the United States came in a close second with nearly 52,000 in sales. </p><p>Although Porsche is a member of the VW Group family of brands, it has remained largely unaffected by its parent company's massive emissions cheating scandal. Porsche is crushing it in sales and sports cars have nothing to do with it

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Dozens upon dozens of <keyword id="6358835" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Electric-cars">electric cars</keyword> are set to flood the market in coming years. </li><li>New EVs are coming from startups like Lucid, Rivian, and Canoo, along with legacy OEMs like <keyword id="6355174" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ford">Ford</keyword>. </li><li>By 2023, everything from supercars to offroad pickups will have a battery-powered option. </li></ul><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cycling-boom-us-streets-infrastructure-bike-lanes-history-united-states-2020-12">Gas-powered cars have ruled the roads</a> for more than a century - but <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</keyword> are about to have their day. </p><p>Today, climate-conscious shoppers can choose from dozens of partially or fully electric models. But the number of EVs on the market is set to skyrocket in coming years as startups mature and as traditional automakers double down on the growing space. </p><p><keyword id="4581" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="general-motors">General Motors</keyword> alone plans to have 30 electric models in showrooms by 2025. And several other automakers have issued <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/promises-carmakers-have-made-about-their-future-electric-vehicles-2020-1">similar pledges</a> to phase out gas guzzlers in favor of zero-emission cars. </p><p>Analysts at McKinsey &amp; Company <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/automotive-and-assembly/our-insights/the-road-ahead-for-e-mobility#">estimate</a> that carmakers will launch 400 new battery-powered models through 2025. But plenty of interesting new EVs will be on sale much sooner than that. </p><p>Check out some of the coolest EVs hitting the market by 2023 - along with their expected arrival dates - below.</p><h2>Audi E-Tron GT (2021)</h2><div type="image" title="Audi E-Tron GT" height="1668" width="2500" msid="81617802" hostid="261"></div><p>Audi has talked up the E-Tron GT for a while now - and it showed off a concept version in "Avengers: Endgame" - but finally <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/audi-e-tron-gt-electric-sedan-performance-horsepower-specs-2021-2">unveiled the real thing</a> in February. </p><p>It starts at roughly $100,000 for the base model, which puts out 469 horsepower and has a range of 238 miles. The $140,000 high-performance RS version generates 590 horsepower and hits 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, Audi says. </p><p>The car hits US dealerships this summer. </p><h2><keyword id="6355119" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="bmw">BMW</keyword> i4 (2021)</h2><div type="image" title="BMW i4." height="1668" width="2500" msid="81617803" hostid="261"></div><p>BMW may be a bit behind the times with its "i" prefix that, once upon a time, was attached to anything techy. But <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bmw-i4-ev-sedan-range-specs-horsepower-2021-3">the i4</a> still bodes well for BMW's electric future.  </p><p>The German brand's first electric sedan, the i4 will have an EPA-estimated range of 300 miles and will put out up to 530 horsepower, according to BMW. There will also be a performance model. </p><p>The i4 goes on sale this year. </p><h2>BMW iX (2022)</h2><div type="image" title="BMW iX" height="1667" width="2500" msid="81617804" hostid="261"></div><p>BMW is also developing an X5-sized electric SUV that's set to enter production in late 2021 and arrive at dealers in early 2022. Delivering more than 300 miles of range and 500 horsepower in its top trim, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bmw-ix-electric-suv-first-look-photos-specs-details-2020-11">the iX</a> will be BMW's flagship EV. </p><p>In Germany, the SUV will start at roughly $92,000, but there's no word on US pricing yet. </p><h2>Bollinger B1/B2 (2022)</h2><div type="image" title="4 Bollinger Motors B1 3 4 studio" height="1498" width="2000" msid="81617806" hostid="261"></div><p>Michigan-based EV startup Bollinger Motors somehow managed to develop a cutting-edge electric truck that still keeps things old school.</p><p>The firm plans to sell an SUV, the B1, and a pickup, the B2, that have utilitarian looks, exposed rivets, and manual switches of offroaders from a bygone era. But the vehicles still pack a modern punch - Bollinger says they'll produce 614 horsepower and 668 lb-ft of torque. </p><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bollinger-ev-startup-suv-pickup-b1-b2-updated-design-2020-12">B1 and B2</a> cost $125,000 and deliveries are set to begin in 2022. </p><h2>Cadillac Lyriq (2022)</h2><div type="image" title="Cadillac Lyriq" height="825" width="1102" msid="81617807" hostid="261"></div><p>Cadillac is set to become GM's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gm-bullish-outlook-plans-to-take-on-tesla-with-cadillac-2019-1">flagship electric brand</a>, and its first EV is just over the horizon. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cadillac-just-unveiled-its-lyriq-electric-car-2020-8">Lyriq</a>, unveiled last summer in concept form, will be one of the first vehicles to use GM's Ultium battery tech when it hits US dealerships in 2022. </p><p>Details are still scarce, but GM has said the crossover will come in rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions, and that it will deliver at least 300 miles of range. It will cost between $75,000 and $100,000 to start, GM said. </p><h2>Canoo pickup truck (2023)</h2><div type="image" title="Canoo pickup truck" height="1080" width="1440" msid="81617808" hostid="261"></div><p>EV startup Canoo's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/canoo-ev-pickup-truck-first-look-features-specs-2021-3">upcoming pickup</a> is unlike anything on the road today. The pod-shaped truck features a host of useful built-in features like fold-out work surfaces, a bed extender, power outlets galore, and a customizable rear seating area.</p><p>Canoo is targeting the truck at businesses, but it's also positioning it as the ultimate adventure vehicle. Various camper shells and roof racks will be available once the truck hits the market. Preorders will open up in late 2021. </p><h2>Ford F-150 Electric (2022)</h2><div type="image" title="2021_F 150 Raptor_05" height="1511" width="2500" msid="81617809" hostid="261"></div><p>The Ford F-150 isn't just the best-selling pickup truck in the US, it's been the nation's most popular vehicle overall for more than four decades. And come 2022, it's getting an electric version. </p><p>Ford has already teased the F-150 EV with gimmicky stunts like a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXFHgoon7lg">video</a> showing a prototype towing a freight train loaded up with 1 million pounds. The Blue Oval has said the F-150 EV will be powered by a dual-motor setup but hasn't released many details beyond that. </p><h2>GMC Hummer EV (2021)</h2><div type="image" title="2022 GMC HUMMER EV 002" height="1477" width="1969" msid="81617811" hostid="261"></div><p>GM resurrected the Hummer name for its much-hyped electric pickup truck, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gmc-hummer-ev-electric-pickup-truck-photos-features-specs-2020-10">2022 GMC Hummer EV</a>. GMC calls the model a "supertruck" and says it will offer 1,000 horsepower and 350 miles of range. The $112,595 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2022-hummer-ev-edition-1-coolest-features-gmc-electric-pickup-2020-10">"Edition 1" model</a> will be available to reservation holders this fall, with a handful of other trim levels to follow. </p><h2>Lucid Air (2021)</h2><div type="image" title="Lucid Air exterior_3" height="1620" width="2160" msid="81617812" hostid="261"></div><p>The Air will be the first production vehicle out of Lucid, an upstart EV maker that's staffed by former <keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword> engineers and run by the man who led Tesla's Model S project.</p><p>With an EPA-estimated range of up to 517 miles and a base price of under $70,000, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucids-ceo-rawlinson-electric-sedan-suv-crazed-market-2021-3?r=tl-sub">luxury sedan</a> takes direct aim at the Model S. And it appears to have Elon Musk and Tesla shaking in their boots. The same day that Lucid announced its base sedan would cost $69,900 after federal tax incentives, Musk <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-model-s-price-cut-lucid-unveils-air-2020-10">changed the price</a> of the Model S to undercut it by just a few hundred dollars. </p><h2>Lucid SUV (2023)</h2><div type="image" title="Lucid Motors Project Gravity_3" height="1667" width="2500" msid="81617814" hostid="261"></div><p>Taking a page out of Tesla's playbook, Lucid plans to build a crossover following the launch of its debut luxury sedan. </p><p>Lucid hasn't said much about its future family-hauler, dubbed <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucid-motors-project-gravity-electric-suv-available-2023-air-ev-2020-9">Project Gravity</a>, but claims it will offer loads of interior space and will "redefine the luxury SUV." But the German luxury brand plans to start building a battery-powered version of its best-selling model, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-macan-suv-electric-confirmed-2019-2">Macan crossover</a>, by the end of 2022. An electric Cayman and Boxster are on the way as well, but Porsche has no plans to produce a zero-emission version of its flagship 911 sports car anytime soon. </p><h2>Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo (2021)</h2><div type="image" title="2021 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo._21" height="1667" width="2500" msid="81617816" hostid="261"></div><p>The electron-powered Macan is still a long way away, but EV buyers who desire nothing less than an electric Porsche with some utility and ample cargo capacity may find what they're looking for in the upcoming <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-taycan-4s-turbo-s-cross-turismo-ev-wagon-ebikes-2021-3">Taycan Cross Turismo</a>. </p><p>It's the station wagon version of the brand's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-taycan-4s-review-0-60-price-range-ev-electric-2020-11">Taycan sedan</a>, and Porsche gave it a bit of extra trunk space, more ground clearance, and standard all-wheel drive. The Taycan Cross Turismo starts at $90,900 and hits US dealerships this summer. </p><h2>Rivian R1T/R1S (2021)</h2><div type="image" title="Rivian R1S" height="1120" width="1494" msid="81617817" hostid="261"></div><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-rivian-ev-startup-amazon-backed-tesla-challenger-2021-2">Rivian</a> is a California-based EV startup that has been developing vehicles since 2009 and has emerged as one of the most promising Tesla rivals. It's set to start delivering its first R1T pickups and R1S SUVs this summer. </p><p>The upstart is taking aim at the outdoorsy crowd with its high-end vehicles that will offer a range of up to 400 miles, up to 750 horsepower, and innovative features like a "gear tunnel" that can fit a slide-out camping kitchen. </p><p>Base versions of the R1T and R1S are due out in 2022 and will start at $67,500 and $70,000, respectively. </p><h2>Tesla Cybertruck (2022)</h2><div type="image" title="Cybertruck" height="696" width="1235" msid="81617818" hostid="261"></div><p>According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the long-anticipated Cybertruck has been fully developed and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-elon-musk-engineering-finished-deliveries-maybe-this-year-2021-1">deliveries may start in late 2021</a>. However, he said, the more likely scenario is that mass production will begin in 2022. </p><p>The polarizing pickup, unveiled at a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-pickup-trucks-coolest-features-2019-11">splashy event</a> in 2019, will have a 500-mile range and a 0-60-mph time of under three seconds in its top configuration, Tesla says. It will have a built-in bed cover, a slide-out ramp, and a bulletproof body made from stainless steel. </p><p>Tesla says the Cybertruck will eventually come in single, dual, and triple-motor versions and will have a starting price under $40,000. </p><h2>Tesla Roadster (2022)</h2><div type="image" title="Tesla Roadster." height="1604" width="2854" msid="81617819" hostid="261"></div><p>Elon Musk said the upcoming Roadster would be the "fastest production car ever made, period," when it was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-tesla-roadster-2017-2017-11">unveiled</a> in 2017. Tesla promises that the supercar will be capable of speeds exceeding 250 mph and will have a range of 620 miles - more than any EV on the market today. It'll make the sprint to 60 mph in a blistering 1.9 seconds and hit 100 mph in 4.2 seconds, Tesla says. </p><p>But for it to do all of those impressive things it needs to get here first. Tesla initially said the $250,000 "Founders Series" Roadster would arrive in 2020, but Musk <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1354869981146738693">said</a> in January that production would need to wait until 2022. </p><h2>Volkswagen ID.Buzz (2023)</h2><div type="image" title="VW ID Buzz concept" height="1667" width="2500" msid="81617820" hostid="261"></div><p>Volkswagen made a splash in 2017 when it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vw-volkswagen-microbus-coming-2022-2017-8">announced</a> plans to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vw-microbus-launching-in-2022-will-have-big-updates-2018-1">bring back its iconic Microbus</a> as an EV. It's not known exactly what the van will look like when it hits streets, but VW did build a concept vehicle (shown above). </p><p>We don't know all the details of the ID.Buzz quite yet, but the carmaker said it will be based on the same EV platform that underpins VW's ID.4 and ID.3 models. </p><p>Although the ID.Buzz was initially slated to hit the market in 2022, Volkswagen of America CEO Scott Keogh told <a href="https://www.autonews.com/cars-concepts/vws-keogh-id-buzz-reactions-been-huge">Automotive News</a> in January that the project has been pushed to 2023. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6354427" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="apple">Apple</keyword> wants to release a self-driving, electric consumer car by 2024, Reuters reported Monday. </li><li>The tech giant would face competition from dozens of new electric vehicles that are set to flood the market over the next few years. </li><li>Apple may not build its own car at all, deciding instead to integrate its battery and self-driving technology into an existing automaker's vehicles, Reuters reported. </li></ul><p>Apple's electric-vehicle project is surging ahead with the aim of building a self-driving consumer car by 2024, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/exclusive-apple-targets-car-production-by-2024-and-eyes-next-level-battery-technology-sources-2020-12">Reuters</a> reported Monday. And although developing a new car from scratch is a massive challenge in itself, the true test will be whether the tech giant can convince drivers to buy it. </p><p>Dozens upon dozens of electric vehicles across multiple segments are set to flood the market in coming years, from both upstart firms and established manufacturers alike, all of which are set to include some advanced driver-assistance tech.</p><p>And while it's difficult to determine exactly which brands or vehicles Apple's car will directly compete with without more details, it's safe to say that the tech company will face stiff competition no matter what type of vehicle it eventually builds (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-electric-car-project-titan-key-advantages-wall-street-analysts-2020-12">or puts its name on</a>).  </p><p>If the company heads in the same direction as its consumer devices and builds an upmarket luxury car, its most formidable competitor will likely be Tesla, which currently dominates the EV market and is the world's most valuable carmaker.</p><p>Tesla's also one of the industry's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-fsd-software-advantage-over-other-automakers-gene-munster-2020-12">leaders in driver-assistance tech</a>. The company's crossovers and sedans already come with a driver-assistance system called Autopilot, and CEO Elon Musk claims that the company's more advanced "full self-driving" feature - which doesn't actually make vehicles fully autonomous - <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-autopilot-full-self-driving-subscription-early-2021-elon-musk-2020-12">will be available soon</a>.</p><p>But plenty of other luxury brands are trying to carve out some of Tesla's market share by launching new EVs in the near future. An Apple sedan might come up against future four-doors like the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucid-air-sedan-features-specs-range-performance-tesla-model-s-2020-8">Lucid Air</a> (due out in 2021), <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bmw-teases-the-electric-i4-concept-a-sleek-and-powerful-tesla-rival-2020-3">BMW i4</a> (due out in 2022), or Audi E-Tron GT (due in 2021). Mercedes-Benz, for its part, plans to launch six new battery-powered models by 2022, including the EQS and EQE sedans. </p><p>As US consumer demand for sedans dwindles and appetite for compact crossovers grows, Apple may very well opt to build a high-end SUV instead. In that case, the iPhone maker would need to fend off rivals like the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rivian-to-have-high-quality-interiors-bentley-lincoln-2020-8">Rivian R1S</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bmw-ix-electric-suv-first-look-photos-specs-details-2020-11">BMW iX</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-macan-suv-electric-confirmed-2019-2">Porsche Macan EV</a>, and Mercedes-Benz EQC. </p><p>Cadillac, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-autopilot-second-best-assistance-software-consumer-reports-2020-10">which has one of the best driver-assistance systems on the market</a> and is set to become GM's all-electric brand, may also pose a threat to Apple's ambitions. Its pair of electric motors develop 408 horsepower drawing electricity from a 78 kWh LG Chem battery pack.
