PopCap is best known for its hit game "Bejeweled," which, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-history-of-bejeweled-2014-2">according to cofounder Jason Kapalka</a>, has been played by more than 500 million people throughout its 14-year history. The company was bought by Electronic Arts for $1.3 billion in 2011.
Fiete's house is glassy and modern, with four bedrooms situated over three floors of living space. Sliding doors throughout the house make for incredible views of the Space Needle and downtown Seattle.

On June 14, <keyword id="193871" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Electronic-Arts">Electronic Arts</keyword> and Maxis will be shutting down several <keyword id="838419" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Facebook-games">Facebook games</keyword>, EA announced <a href="http://www.ea.com/news/maxis-an-update-on-facebook-titles">in a blog post </a>on its web site.
EA says interest in the games has dropped dramatically.
This news follows the well-documented troubles of Facebook game maker, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/zynga">Zynga</a>.
So, this could mean that people just aren't spending as much time playing games on Facebook anymore, as EA hints in its announcement. EA references "other recent shutdowns of social games." It is perhaps referring to Zynga's decision t<a href="http://techcrunch.com/2012/12/30/zynga-shuts-down-petville-fishville-mafia-wars-2/">o kill off PetVille and several other titles late last year</a>.
Facebook says it's still a major hub for game players. Last month, Facebook offered a bunch of stats, <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2013/3/26/4149838/facebook-says-over-250-million-playing-games-each-month">Chris Welch at The Verge reported:</a> over 250 million users playing via the Facebook.com website every month; about 20 percent of daily visitors playing games; more than 100 game makers that generated over $1 million last year. Overall, games generated a total of $2 billion in payouts to developers last year, too, Facebook said.
So, this news could also be part of EA's attempt overhaul itself. EA was just <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ea-voted-worst-company-in-america-2013-4">named among the Consumerist's list</a> of "worst companies in America" for angering players by requiring that they connect to the Internet to play <keyword id="1325295" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="SimCity">SimCity</keyword> 5. Last month, Electronics Arts CEO John Riccitiello stepped down from his post after six years.

Today we are informing players of the difficult decision to retire some of our Facebook games: The Sims Social, SimCity Social and Pet Society.
After millions of people initially logged in to play these games, the number of players and amount of activity has fallen off. For people who have seen other recent shutdowns of social games, perhaps this is not surprising.
EA will continue to deliver popular titles for Facebook, most notably games from PopCap, including Bejeweled Blitz, Solitaire Blitz and the recently-announced Plants vs. Zombies Adventures.
For players who have enjoyed our games, we will be making a special offer to introduce you to a PopCap game. You’re a valued fan and we want to make sure you get a smooth transition to PopCap. More details about that offer will appear in-game soon.

EA Shuts Down SimCity Social And Several Other Facebook Games

The public offering of stock promises to be the biggest casual game company deal since EA bought PopCap in 2011 for $1.3 billion.
The Telegraph notes:
Few financial details are available, but it was turning over around £300m at the start of this year and has grown rapidly since then. Its games were played an average of 300m times a month in 2011 but that figure now tops 30bn, helped by the success of Candy Crush Saga, which is the most popular game played on Facebook.
Turnover is the U.K. term for total topline revenues.
Smaller companies with revenues of less than $1 billion annually are allowed to file S-1 papers confidentially with the SEC in the U.S. After a quiet period, the S-1 will eventually be unveiled for public scrutiny.
Twitter recently did the same thing.
The fact that King believes it can make a market for its equity among ordinary investors shows the addictive power of "match-three" games. The original match-three variant was PopCap's Bejeweled. Its format has been copied and, in King's case, arguably improved by Candy Crush, which features 300 or more increasingly bizarre levels.
In the U.S., game IPOs have had a rocky recent history. They cycle on fads and trends.
Take Zynga, for instance. In Q1 2013, its revenue declined 17% to $264 million, as users got bored of Farmville and Zynga Poker. 520 workers lost their jobs. Zynga acquired OMGPop for $180 million in 2012, to obtain its super hot Draw Something app brand. In 2013, it laid off the entire OMGPop staff. Few play Draw Something now. ZNGA once traded at more than $14 but now sits around $3.61. Zynga's Q2 2013 revenue fell to $231 million, down another 31% year-over-year.
