In what has raised security concern and high alert in the sky of Mumbai are five unidentified objects. Looking like a bunch of parachutes, these flying objects were noticed on Saturday evening by a <keyword id="6358200" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jet-Airways">Jet Airways</keyword> pilot before take off. 
 
As per a PTI news report, on alerting the Mumbai airport's Air Traffic Control, police became extra cautious. 
 The matter has also been brought to the notice of Mumbai's <keyword id="173458" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="joint-commissioner">Joint Commissioner</keyword> of Police (Law and Order) Deven Bharti. 
The police, however, is yet to register a case since no complaint has been received. 
 
"Since no one has filed a complaint with us, we have not registered any case as of now,"DCP, Zone 8, Virendra Mishra told the news agency.

The deadly terror strike in Paris resembled the <keyword id="6426476" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="26/11">26/11</keyword> terror strike in <keyword id="6358070" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mumbai">Mumbai</keyword>, experts say. Hence a thick blanket of security has been put to protect the city once again. Security was today stepped around major establishments across various cities of <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword>. 
 
"All police units have been asked to review and access control measures at places with heavy footfall," Director General of Police, Maharashtra, Praveen Dixit told PTI. 
 
 
"Owners and managers of such places have also been asked to do mock drills to avoid any possible untoward incidents," Dixit said. 
 
Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deven Bharti has said in view of terror attacks in the French capital last night, security has been beefed up in Mumbai as well. 
 
"Though we always remain alert, in wake of the attacks in Paris, security has been beefed across the city. Officials concerned have been asked to remain more vigilant," he said. 
 
Security at major railway stations, airports, commercial establishments like shopping malls, theatres has been stepped up, another senior officer of Mumbai Police said. 
 
The official apprised that all agencies involved in monitoring of security measures have been asked to share vital inputs more precisely. 
 A series of attacks targeting young concert-goers, soccer fans and Parisians at popular nightspots killed at least 120 people in the deadliest violence to strike <keyword id="6354785" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="France">France</keyword> since World War II.

Paris Under Attack: Security beefed up across Maharashtra

New Delhi, The Covid-19 pandemic necessitated a re-imagining of how access to justice, a key pillar in all democracies, can be ensured in the backdrop of an <keyword id="10498702" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="unprecedented-health-crisis">unprecedented health crisis</keyword>. The virus pushed a <keyword id="10498701" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="serious-supreme-court">serious Supreme Court</keyword> into revolutionary changes to meet the persistent demands of justice. The Supreme Court departed from its history and attempted to <keyword id="5368288" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="mainstream-technology">mainstream technology</keyword>, since March 23 the court hearings moved online. Justices began hearing arguments by video conferencing, a momentous step for an institution, which has always been cautious and guarded its secrets. Technology began to serve as a platform for fiery arguments and courtroom's give-and-take by lawyers, and paved the way for a renewed justice delivery system. In this year, largely impacted by the pandemic, the Supreme Court delivered some crucial judgments, which may play a significant role in the judicial history. 1. Permanent Commission for women in armed forces In the beginning of the year, the Supreme Court delivered a strong blow at gender stereotype, as it granted permanent commission (PC) to women officers in army, navy and air force. The top court junked the <keyword id="6356303" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Centre">Centre</keyword>'s argument that women were "physiologically weak" to be given PC and command appointments, and asked the government to look beyond the deeply entrenched gender stereotype, which positions man as a dominant being and casts a notion for women as caretakers. The series of rulings, beginning in February, quashed the 2019 circular, which foreclosed women officers' chances to apply for PCs. The top court said to cast aspersions on women's abilities on the ground of gender is an affront not only to their dignity as women but to the dignity of the members of the Indian Army - men and women - who serve as equal citizens in a common mission. The top court directed the Centre to give PC to serving women officers, who completed 14 years in service along with pensionary benefits to those who retired on account of not being granted the commission. The top court said for command assignments women cannot be excluded completely and there should be case-by-case basis consideration. The top court said the delay in granting PC has caused "irreparable prejudice to the women officers", and directed the Centre to grant permanent commission to women officers in the Army within three months. 2. Right to access to the <keyword id="10498700" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="internet-equivalent">internet equivalent</keyword> to a fundamental right In January, the Supreme Court said the right to access the Internet is a fundamental right, under Article 19 of the Constitution, by extension. The apex court observed that it is essential to distinguish between the internet as a tool and the freedom of expression through the internet. The court directed the Jammu and Kashmir administration to immediately restore internet services connected with access to government websites, localised/limited e-banking facilities, hospitals services and other essential services. The ruling came on the petitions challenging the telecommunication blackout in the region, which followed the revocation of the Article 370. The top court said non-recognition of technology within the sphere of law is only a disservice to the inevitable. In this light, the importance of the internet cannot be underestimated, as from morning to night we are encapsulated within the cyberspace and our most basic activities are enabled by the use of internet, observed the court. However, the judgement did not mention any time-frame to restore internet services to other sectors and for the people in the region. The apex court observed that none of the counsels, involved in the matter, have argued for declaring the right to access the internet as a fundamental right and therefore we are not expressing any view on the same. "We are confining ourselves to declaring that the right to freedom of speech and expression under Article 19(1)(a), and the right to carry on any trade or business under 19(1)(g), using the medium of internet is constitutionally protected", said the court. 3. SC asks Parliament to ponder over powers of the Speaker In January, the Supreme Court asked the Parliament to ponder over the powers granted to the Legislative Assembly Speaker, regarding the disqualification of MLAs, under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution. The Supreme Court asked the Parliament to "seriously consider" establishing a permanent tribunal headed by a retired Supreme Court Judge or a retired Chief Justice of a High Court, or some other outside independent mechanism, to examine disputes concerning disqualification of MPs and MLAs. The top court ruling came on an appeal by a Congress MLA from Manipur, who challenged the delay by the Speaker in deciding a disqualification petition against another MLA who won on a Congress ticket but later switched to the BJP. The court emphasised that it is essential for the Speaker to decide on the matter within a reasonable time period, and recommended the disqualification petitions should be decided within three months. 4. SC takes suo moto cognizance of the migrant crisis during the Covid-19 lockdown The Supreme Court initially exercised restraint in passing a strong order and expressed satisfaction at the steps taken by the government in the migrant workers' matter. However, it shook off the hesitation and in May began hearing on its own on various issues connected with the problems faced by migrant workers, who began walking back on foot to their native places or were left stranded in different parts of country due the lockdown to contain the pandemic. The top court conducted a series of hearings in the matter, where it heard detailed submissions by the Centre and state governments, and directed all migrant workers willing to return to their native places must be transported within a fortnight. The court ordered the state governments and Union Territories to register the migrant workers who have returned home - at the district and block levels - and provide employment opportunities to them. Since then, the top court has taken suo moto cognisance in important matters: proper treatment of Covid-19 patients and dignified handling of dead bodies in the hospitals; and spread of the infection in the child protection homes. 5. Amid Covid, fundamental right to health includes affordable treatment In December, the Supreme Court said it is a war against Covid-19, which needs government-public partnership to make Covid treatment affordable for the common people. The top court emphasised that fundamental right to health includes affordable treatment. "Right to health is a fundamental right guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India. Right to health includes affordable treatment. Therefore, it is the duty upon the State to make provisions for affordable treatment and more and more provisions in the hospitals to be run by the State and/or local administration are made", said a three-judge bench. The top court noted that it cannot be disputed that for whatever reasons, treatment has become costlier and it is not affordable to the common man at all. Even if one survives from Covid-19, many times he is finished financially and economically. The bench insisted that the state government and the local administration should ensure that a cap is fixed on the fees charged by the private hospitals, which can be in exercise of the powers under the Disaster Management Act. 6. Public spaces can't be occupied by indeterminable number of people indefinitely In a major verdict on petitions seeking removal anti-CAA protesters at Shaheen Bagh, the Supreme Court said it cannot accept that an indeterminable number of people can assemble whenever they choose to protest, and cited the distinction between the manner of dissent against the colonisers and the expression of dissent in a democratic system. A three-judge bench said traces its foundation back to when the seeds of protest during our freedom struggle were sown deep, to eventually flower into a democracy. "What must be kept in mind, however, is that the erstwhile mode and manner of dissent against colonial rule cannot be equated with dissent in a self-ruled democracy," said the top court. Emphasising that protesters cannot block public roads and cause grave inconvenience to commuters, the top court said: "We have to make it unequivocally clear that public ways and public spaces cannot be occupied in such a manner and that too indefinitely. Democracy and dissent go hand in hand, but then the demonstrations expressing dissent have to be in designated places alone." The court said it is the responsibility of the administration to keep public spaces free from obstruction, and the law enforcement agencies should wait for the court's intervention. 7. Transfer of probe, into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput from Maharashtra government to CBI The death of Sushant Singh Rajput was shrouded with mystery and it continues to remain so. In August, the Supreme Court ordered a CBI probe into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput and asked Mumbai Police to hand over all evidence collected so far in the case to CBI. The top court noted that Mumbai police had registered only an accidental death report in connection with Rajput's death, therefore it had limited investigation powers, whereas the case registered by Bihar police was a full-fledged FIR which has been already referred to CBI. The apex court ensured that there was no confusion about CBI being the sole authority to investigate the mystery behind Rajput's death and no other state police could interfere with it. The apex court order came on a plea by Rhea Chakraborty seeking transfer of FIR registered in Patna to Mumbai. 8. SC extends Arnab Goswami's interim bail, saying deprivation of liberty even for a day is one day too many In November, in a major relief for Republic TV editor Arnab Goswami, the Supreme Court granted him interim bail in a 2018 abetment to suicide case. The top court noted that it is deeply concerned if courts do not preserve human liberty and if constitutional courts do not protect liberty then who will, and "deprivation of liberty even for a single day is one day too many. We must always be mindful of the deeper systemic implications of our decisions." Arnab and two others were arrested in connection with the suicide of architect Anvay Naik and his mother. "Liberty survives by the vigilance of her citizens, on the cacophony of the media and in the dusty corridors of courts alive to the rule of (and not by) law. Yet, much too often, liberty is a casualty when one of these components is found wanting", said the top court. The bench, pulling up the Maharashtra government over Arnab's arrest, said the victim is entitled to a fair investigation and the investigation should go on, but if state targets individuals on this basis then let a strong message go out. The top court said if constitutional courts did not interfere, "we are traveling the path of destruction undeniably". 9. Under Domestic Violence Act, SC says woman can seek residence in shared households of husband's relatives In October, the Supreme Court held that a woman can seek right to stay in in-laws house under the Domestic Violence (DV) Act, where she lived for some time due to her relationship. The ruling has given a wider meaning to shared household in DV Act, as the woman facing domestic violence has a right to reside in a shared household, rented or owned by her in-laws, and cannot be compelled to move out, after she filed a complaint under DV Act. The three-judge bench said domestic violence in this country is rampant and several women encounter violence in some form or the other or almost every day. However, it is the least reported form of cruel behaviour. The bench said in event, the shared household belongs to any relative of the husband with whom in a domestic relationship the woman has lived, the said house will become a shared household. In December, the Supreme Court said the Senior Citizen Act 2007, cannot be interpreted or deployed to evict a woman from her shared household, which she is otherwise entitled under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act. "Section 3 of the Senior Citizens Act, 2007 cannot be deployed to override and nullify other protections in law, particularly that of a woman's right to a shared household under Section 17 of the PWDV (protection of women from domestic violence) Act 2005", said the top court. 10. SC fines lawyer <keyword id="6368850" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="prashant-bhushan">Prashant Bhushan</keyword> by Rupee 1 in contempt case for tweets against the judiciary On 31 August, the Supreme Court imposed a fine of Rs 1 on advocate Prashant Bhushan, convicted in a contempt case for tweets against the judiciary. The court said in case if he fails to deposit the penalty by September 15, then he would have to undergo 3-month imprisonment. On August 25, a three-judge bench had reserved the order on the sentence, after Bhushan declined to apologise for the tweets. Pronouncing the judgement, the bench said freedom of expression is there, but rights of others should also be respected, and the conduct of the contemnor also needs to be taken into consideration. The bench observed that Bhushan also gave wide publicity to the supplementary statement submitted in the court, where he refused to express regret for the tweets against the judiciary. Bhushan deposited the fine but also sought intra-court appeal to challenge his conviction, and this plea is pending in the top court. Top 10 crucial judgments by Supreme Court in the year of the pandemic

She wanted to stake out a prime position to watch Travis Scott's headlining set at the <keyword id="12479178" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="astroworld" source="Orion">Astroworld</keyword> festival, so she showed up three hours early. Scott's die-hard fans were sitting in the grass, biding their time. As the show neared, Lira remembers, the area filled up with concertgoers until it was no longer possible to sit. Lira says "a big wave of people" started pushing forward about 30 minutes before Scott took the stage. Fans pressed in from all sides, and Lira says she could barely find space on the ground to plant both feet.Lira decided she had enough about a minute before the rapper started performing. "I'm going to pass out if I stay here," she told a friend. Just as the two turned to leave, Scott began playing the song "Escape Plan," and they were pushed back by another wave of people pressing towards the stage. Lira says she became desperate. "Our chests were cramped up, you could not breathe at all," she says. "We tried to move, we were like, 'Please, we're trying to leave.' This other girl was screaming and crying."Lira and her friend moved back a few rows from the stage before Scott started hyping up their section of the crowd. "In my mind, I was just like, 'Are you kidding me?' People are going to trample ... they're going to fall over each other." She describes a "sinkhole of people" opening up around her as bodies fell to the ground and started piling on top of each other. "I was trying to get up as fast as I could, but people were landing on top of my legs and I couldn't move," she says. Lira screamed, but the music was too loud for anyone to hear her. At one point, she heard Scott start in on the song "Stargazing," which includes the lyrics: "And it ain't no mosh pit if it ain't no injuries, I got 'em stage divin' out the nosebleeds." "I was like, 'I'm going to die because this man is not stopping the concert,'" Lira recalls. Knowing the song would trigger jumping and moshing in the crowd, she resigned herself to being crushed to death. She lost sight of the lasers, strobe lights, and pyrotechnics that made up Scott's performance as other people fell on top of her. "There was no light left of the concert at all," Lira says. "It was complete darkness. I was holding another person's hand and I was just accepting that I was going to die." The Houston Police Department's homicide division is leading an investigation into who, if anyone, is to blame for the tragedy. That investigation could take weeks to months, Finner has said. <h2>The deadly chaos at Astroworld followed rowdiness at several previous Travis Scott shows </h2>Friday wasn't Lira's first rodeo. She attended the 2019 Astroworld festival in Houston, and recalls crowding issues then as well, if on a lesser scale. "There was a lack of oxygen sometimes," she says. That year, <a href="https://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/ny-astroworld-2019-three-people-trampled-20211106-ulo2z6uderci5edpsqbz7s37e4-story.html">three people</a> were injured in a stampede to get into the festival.Local officials appeared to have concerns leading up to the 2021 event that concertgoers would be hard to control. During the inaugural festival, 170 Houston police officers were working the event, compared to 530 who were on duty Friday. Despite the increased security, fans again stormed the gates of the festival as it opened last week. Finner said this first crowd rush may have been due to people unable to afford or otherwise secure a ticket, or wanting to beat others to the merchandise stands.Scott has a well-documented history of encouraging such rowdy behavior at his events. Once tickets for this year's festival sold out in May, Scott wrote in an <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/COf4Sqfjogg/?hl=en">Instagram post</a> that he was "putting a plan together" to "get some more of the wild ones in" to the event, "even if I gotta sneak them in." Twenty-seven-year-old <a href="https://www.insider.com/man-paralyzed-2017-travis-scott-gig-devastated-for-astroworld-victims-2021-11">Kyle Green</a> alleges he was left partially paralyzed from a fall at the same show, and is currently suing Scott in Manhattan Supreme Court, according to court records seen by Insider. Scott's 2015 performance at the <a href="https://www.insider.com/travis-scott-astroworld-fiasco-follows-criminal-charges-previous-concerts-2021-11">Lollapalooza</a> music festival in Chicago, where he encouraged fans to vault over security barricades, was stopped after just five minutes. Though no one was injured, Scott was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. The <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjD2tDEqWTk">livestream</a> of his performance shows Scott spoke to a person working in the pit below the stage and asked them to help usher someone out of the crowd. Five minutes later, shortly after yelling to the crowd, "I wanna see some ragers, man. Who wanna rage man?", Scott pointed out an emergency vehicle driving into the crowd. "There's an ambulance in the crowd, woah, woah, woah," he said. "What the fuck is that?"Scott looked around and appeared confused before asking everyone in the crowd to put up their middle fingers if "everybody good." He then paused for a minute before launching into another song, saying, "Ya'll know what ya'll came to do." "We need somebody, help him, somebody passed out right here. ... Hold on, don't touch him, don't touch him, everybody just back up," Scott ordered. "Security somebody help, jump in real quick, keep going. Somebody jump in, come on, come on, let's get in there." The rapper then launched into another song. A <a href="https://twitter.com/ChaudharyParvez/status/1456986475929608201">brief clip</a> taken from the mosh pit shows a limp body being removed from the crowd, while Scott stares and sings in the background.Finner has said that Houston police told the event's producers to stop the show when at least one person in the crowd was receiving CPR. But he wouldn't give details on what time that request was made, nor would he say if the producers ignored the request. The decision to end a show early is made jointly between law enforcement and producers, Finner pointed out. He previously told <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/article/astroworld-festival-what-to-know.html">The New York Times</a> that you "can't just close" a festival of 50,000 people. "We have to worry about rioting, riots, when you have a group that's that young," he told the newspaper. (When reached for comment on this story, a Houston Police Department spokesperson referred Insider back to Finner's press conferences.)The performance went on for about 30 more minutes after Scott noticed the passed-out concertgoer. Drake joined him for a few songs near the end of the set. As Scott played his closing song, "Goosebumps," fireworks lit up the sky behind the stage.<div type="image" title="Astroworld cancelled sign" height="1333" width="2000" msid="87686345" hostid="261"></div>When reached for comment by Insider on Thursday, representatives for Scott said, "it is completely inaccurate to say that Travis was aware of anything while on stage." Scott's attorney, Edwin F. McPherson, went into further detail during an interview with <a href="https://www.goodmorningamerica.com/news/video/travis-scotts-attorney-rapper-didnt-deadly-crowd-chaos-81127839">"Good Morning America"</a> that aired Friday, saying that Scott was not informed that a mass casualty event had been declared mid-show. "That never got to Travis, that never got to Travis' crew," he said.Scott didn't understand "the full effect of everything" that went on while he was performing until the next morning, McPherson told GMA. "Truly, he did not know what was going on," the lawyer said. "Understand that when he's up on the stage, and he has flash pots going off around him, and he has an ear monitor that has music blasting through it in his own voice, he can't hear anything, he can't see anything."<h2>Concertgoers were "kicked, stepped on, and trampled, and nearly crushed to death"</h2>Lira estimates she was out cold for around five minutes. When she regained consciousness, she recalls, she was still buried in a sea of bodies. "All of a sudden I had a big gasp of air and there was light over top of me again," she tells Insider. Someone pulled her up from the ground, but she found that she couldn't stand on one knee, which had been injured in her fall. As Lira tried to find something to hold onto for support, she noticed a person on the ground with blue lips. Medics reached the area, and Lira finally made her exit, following as they carried the body on a stretcher back through the crowd.Once she found the medical tent, Lira saw medics performing CPR on concertgoers. Someone offered to wrap her knee and call an ambulance, she recalls, but she declined because she doesn't have health insurance and went off in search of her friends instead.<div type="image" title="Astroworld memorial" height="1333" width="2000" msid="87686347" hostid="261"></div>Compared to some of the other injuries reported at the festival, Lira made it out relatively unscathed. Among those seriously injured is 9-year-old Ezra Blount, who was on his father's shoulders when the crowd crush happened. The father, Treston Blount, lost consciousness, and the boy fell to the ground, where he was "kicked, stepped on, and trampled, and nearly crushed to death," according to a <a href="https://www.insider.com/father-of-boy-coma-after-astroworld-trampling-sues-travis-scott-2021-11">lawsuit</a> the father filed. Ezra continues to fight for his life in a medically-induced coma on life support.Scott recorded a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BiFrfiuHAE">video</a> after the concert, saying his "fans really mean the world to me" and that "any time I can make out … anything that's going on, I stop the show and help them get the help they need." "We've been working closely with everyone to just try get to the bottom of this," he said. "I'm honestly just devastated, I could never imagine anything like this just happening."<h2>Legal fallout came swiftly as concertgoers filed dozens of lawsuits</h2>Astroworld 2021 is quickly shaping up to be a legal nightmare for its organizers, with nearly <a href="https://www.insider.com/ben-crump-file-lawsuits-over-100-astroworld-victims-2021-11">150</a> lawsuits <a href="https://www.insider.com/astroworld-travis-scott-faces-more-than-30-lawsuits-2021-11">filed</a> within a week of the deadly crowd surge. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/astroworld-victim-travis-scott-drake-live-nation-lawsuit-2021-11">Manuel Souza</a> filed suit the day after the incident, alleging he was trampled at the festival and asking for $1 million in damages. Souza's lawsuit calls the tragedy "months, if not years, in the making," citing one of Scott's now-deleted tweets encouraging fans to sneak into his concert, as well as multiple incidents that resulted in injuries at his previous performances.<div type="image" title="Cynthia Lira Astroworld" height="2715" width="2000" msid="87686349" hostid="261"></div>Houston-based attorney Tony Buzbee is representing the family of victim Axel Acosta, who he told reporters was <a href="https://www.insider.com/astroworld-victim-was-trampled-like-a-piece-of-trash-lawyer-2021-11">"trampled ... like a piece of trash."</a> Buzzbee said that neither Scott nor the concert organizers "cared enough about Axel to make even a minimal effort to keep him and others at the concert safe."However, legal experts told <a href="https://www.insider.com/travis-scott-criminal-charges-not-likely-legal-experts-say-2021-11">Insider's Kenneth Niemeyer</a> that Scott is unlikely to face criminal charges in connection to the festival. Dmitry Shakhnevich, an adjunct assistant professor at the John Jay School of Criminal Justice, said there's a "slim" chance Scott would face criminal charges because investigators would have to prove the rapper intended to cause harm, or "at the very least" was grossly negligent. Neama Rahmani, president and cofounder of personal-injury firm West Coast Trial Lawyers, agreed. "You need something more than a tragic accident to get to criminal charges," he said.Three days after the concert, Lira went to see a doctor at the encouragement of friends, who said she could eventually sue the concert organizers and make them pay for her medical bills. She was experiencing pain in her knee and a numbness in her arm, and she had multiple bruises. A CT scan ultimately showed nothing abnormal and doctors told Lira she will heal with time. Unlike the bruises, the horror of being crushed in the crowd in front of the stage at Astroworld won't fade for Lira, who says she's completely changed her opinion of Scott, who she once counted among her favorite rappers."I know he saw the ambulance in the crowd, and he did not stop the concert … he was looking at the people passing out, yet he still continued to sing. That's ridiculous," she says. "I will not be supporting him any longer."
