India successfully carried out the final trial of <keyword id="1636608" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="anti-tank-guided-missile">anti-tank guided missile</keyword> -- Nag -- on Thursday. The missile will be inducted soon in the India Army. In 2008, Ministry of Defence approved procurement of 300 Nag missiles and 25 missile carriers for Army. The test was carried out at 6.45 a.m. at the Pokhran field firing ranges in Rajasthan, Defence Research and Development Organisation (<keyword id="6355142" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="DRDO">DRDO</keyword>) said. The missile was integrated with the actual warhead and a tank target was kept at designated range. This was launched from <keyword id="794819" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nag-missile">Nag Missile</keyword> Carrier NAMICA. The missile hit the target accurately defeating the armour. Anti-tank guided missile has been developed by DRDO to engage highly fortified enemy tanks in day and night conditions. The missile has "Fire &amp; Forget" "Top Attack" capabilities with passive homing guidance to defeat all main battle tanks equipped with composite and reactive armour. The NAG missile carrier NAMICA is an Infantry Combat Vehicle BMP2 II based system with amphibious capability. With this final user trial, NAG will enter into production phase. The missile will be produced by Defence PSU Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), whereas Ordinance Factory Medak will produce the NAMICA. Defence Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO and Indian Army for the successful trial of NAG Missile. Chairman DRDO, G. Satheesh Reddy appreciated the efforts of DRDO, Indian Army and Industry in bringing the missile up to the production phase. India's anti-tank guided missile NAG completes final test — will soon be inducted into the Indian Army

<keyword id="1826774" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="former-Indian-President">Former Indian President</keyword> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=APJ+Abdul+Kalam">Dr A P J Abdul Kalam</a> died in <keyword id="57704" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shillong">Shillong</keyword> on Monday. That was about the same day, when India experienced a bout of terrorism in Punjab. Was it something of a coincidence? Kalam, the peace keeper was igniting minds about making earth a liveable place at a seminar, as per his last tweet; and a few thousand kilometres away, a society was disintegrating itself with a terror strike. 
 
Kalam spoke the language of peace. But, his work as a scientist often contradicted his words. Why did he work on building missiles and play an instrumental role in Pokhran Test Range second time around, as part of India’s nuclear programme in 1998? His words on peace, that came much later, didn’t seem to resonate the spirit with this incident. However, this is where people didn’t read his intention as well as they saw his gestures. 
 
He was someone who believed in self-defence. A country that was well-defended with latest technology didn’t have to fear anyone. Believing in peace was his innate faith, but that didn’t mean he would sit without preparing for any eventualities should the enemies strike at once. 
 
His road to the Rashtrapati Bhavan, to don the chair of 11 th President of India between 2002 and 2007 was more or less apolitical. He had worked with various governments and had no enemies across partylines. A scientist to the core, Kalam was a people’s man through every second of his existence. 
 
No sooner did the news of his death break on the internet, social networks went berserk. In the days where role models are few and clean images even fewer, Dr Kalam was someone who was not only rare to find, but also difficult to contain. His charisma and aura was a challenge to anybody who believed personal brand building was an exercise to be done by PR agencies. 
 
His demeanour was spirited, honest and forthcoming. There has hardly been any other politician in the recent times who has been as popular and as interactive. 
 
Kalam had a rare gift. He was untiring when it came to imparting his experience to anyone who cared to listen. His core audience was young minds. He loved being amidst them, administer them an oath of honesty and integrity, make them say they would never indulge in corruption and ensure tomorrow’s India was at least aware of the ill effects of corruption. 
 
Majority of the students and persons who posted on social media soon after his death had only praises for him. While it is normal for people to sing praises about the dead, it is imperative to know Kalam was among those rare people who genuinely left a feeling of loss and void among people’s hearts. At 83, he was sprightly and focused. 
 
An author of several books, Kalam was deeply obliging of people who wanted some moments with him. A picture here, a signed copy of a book there, a lecture someone else, a closely interactive meeting with someone who sought his time; Kalam hardly turned anyone down unless he was pressed for time. 
 
Though <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=NDA">NDA </a>led by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BJP+">BJP </a>put forth his name for the President, Kalam had no enemies in the then Opposition party of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Congress+">Congress </a>at all. He was NDA's poster boy of sorts since he had just completed Pokhran II to bring laurels to the then Prime Minister <keyword id="47100" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Atal-Bihari-Vajpayee">Atal Bihari Vajpayee</keyword>. <keyword id="6366153" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Defence-Minister">Defence minister</keyword> <keyword id="2972300" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Geroge-Fernandes">Geroge Fernandes</keyword> was completely on his side and all the contributions he had to make, for India as a <keyword id="1435588" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Missile-scientist">missile scientist</keyword>. He was known as ‘Missile Man’ much against the soft person who lived inside him. 
 
He checked into Rashtrapathi Bhavan, the abode of the President of India and opened doors of this magnificent structure to the public. People could visit him, meet him and talk to him with shortest of the formalities. He mainly responded to children with utmost keenness, even if they sent them a letter or a book, they were sure to get a response in return. 
 Monday when he died, almost every person on social media has a picture with him on some occasion or the other. Such was the reach of this man who never forgot his roots lie in that quaint village of <keyword id="194058" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ramanathapuram">Ramanathapuram</keyword> in Tamil Nadu. A south Indian who rose to the highest office, just for doing his job with utmost passion is a story that legends are made of. 
 
He died doing what he loved the best. Parting with his energy, his conviction, and commitment to integrity, and igniting minds with new ideas. He collapsed on the dais where he was delivering a lecture, and passed away probably at that instant, amidst keen young minds which were getting inspired to do something for the country.

APJ Abdul Kalam: A flaming torch that ignited young minds

<ul><li><keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> and Japan’s defence ministers finalised on holding the first ever <keyword id="6359526" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="military">military</keyword> exercise between the two nations. </li><li>While countering <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>’s regional territorial ambitions, the move also hedges against the United States failing to contain China’s expansion. </li><li>The two nations will also be initiating a project in robotics and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs),</li></ul>A transition of power is unfolding within the Asian continent and the growing relations between India and Japan are evidence of that. It’s not that India and Japan haven’t conducted strategic exercises before, but now they’ve collaboratively taken up a new initiative to embark on their <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-japan-resolve-to-deepen-maritime-cooperation-5316314/">first-ever joint military exercise</a> that will happen later this year. While, on the surface, it may look like the move comes to counter the rise of China, but it’s also because of United States shifting its regional policy to ‘rebalance Asia’. It doesn’t take away from the fact that territorial nationalism in Asia has definitely served as a catalyst to intensify relations between the two nations. A lot of the credit goes to the Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, for revising Article 9 of its constitution earlier this year. The revision allows Japan’s military forces to operate more along the lines of a conventional army. Addressing China Both countries are grimly aware of China’s military budget shooting up, which is a cause of concern to India because of Arunachal Pradesh and to Japan because of Shenkaku Island. China’s territorial hunger is even more evident because of the recent incursions into Demchok, Ladakh, Chumar and Depsang. Looking at the numbers alone, while in 2010 China already accounted for 28% of Asia’s military spending, it skyrocketed to 38% in 2014. It has been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/The-15-countries-with-the-highest-military-budgets-in-2017/15-Turkey/slideshow/64007628.cms">increasing</a> ever since. It’s a major concern because China’s DF-21d <keyword id="417287" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="anti-ship-ballistic-missile">anti-ship ballistic missile</keyword> can go as far as to target parts of the Arabian Sea and most of the Bay of Bengal aside from the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/A-new-Chinese-anti-ship-ballistic-missile-is-bad-news-for-US-aircraft-carriers/articleshow/49487860.cms">entirety</a> of the South China Sea. That being said, the military exercise between the two countries can be seen as a multilateral hedge in case the United States fails to control China’s rising influence in, not only regional but also international institutions. It’s about more than the military During the dialogue between India’s defence minister <keyword id="129243" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> and her Japanese counterpart, <keyword id="1435328" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Itsunori-Onodera">Itsunori Onodera</keyword>, more than the military exercise were on the agenda. The two countries also initiated a project in robotics and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), which also a first for bilateral relations between the two nations. The project will involve the Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency from Japan and the Defence Research and Development Organization from India’s side. The issue of the US-2 ShinMaywa amphibious aircraft was also discussed. Though nothing concrete was decided on that front, efforts made by both countries in pushing it forward were noted. The strategic alliance between India and Japan actually goes back as far as the days of Subhas Chandra Bose when Japanese sponsorship was the lynchpin that helped form the Azad Hind Fauj, more commonly known as the Indian National Army (INA). Even with <keyword id="49446" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pokhran-II">Pokhran-II</keyword> inviting sanctions from Japan that lasted for three whole years, the bilateral ties between the countries are so complementary to each other, that they always resurge after a point. One of the reasons being the shared values towards democracy, open society, human rights, pluralism, and the rule of law.

Indo-Japanese relations hedge against China’s rise with their first ever military exercise

NEW DELHI: When the <keyword id="6376012" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tejas">Tejas</keyword> light combat aircraft tears into the sky over Bangalore on Friday, its sonic boom will finally herald a major milestone in the long, tortuous developmental saga of the homegrown supersonic fighter. 
 Having clocked almost 2,420 flight tests since its prototype first flew in January 2011, the lightweight multirole Tejas fighter will finally zoom past the initial operational clearance (<keyword id="6354733" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="IOC">IOC</keyword>) mark on Friday. For long wary of <keyword id="508910" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="The-Fighter">the fighter</keyword> being prematurely thrust down its throat, even the IAF will clap this time. 
 "This Tejas Mark-I is much better than a MiG-21 'Bison' on several counts, including weapon-carrying capability and range. But the fighter's full capabilities will emerge only in the Tejas Mark-II version, with a more powerful engine, radar and weapons, which is slated to be ready by December 2018," said a top <keyword id="194542" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="IAF-officer">IAF officer</keyword>. 
 But that is in the future. Friday will mark the actual IOC - which basically signifies the fighter is fully airworthy in different conditions, from extremely low temperatures of high-altitude areas to the searing heat of deserts - of the Tejas Mark-I. It will not be the specious one that the combine of Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), <keyword id="139969" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Aeronautical-Development-Agency">Aeronautical Development Agency</keyword> (ADA) and <keyword id="139970" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Hindustan-Aeronautics-Ltd">Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd</keyword> (HAL) passed off as IOC-I in January 2011. 
 
 
 
The Tejas Mark-I fighter, however, will be ready to go to battle only in 2015 once it gets the final operational clearance (FOC), after integration of all weapons and other systems to ensure it can fi re 23mm guns, rockets and BVR (beyond visual range) missiles as well as undergo air-to-air refuelling. As of now, the Tejas can let loose only close-range R-73 air-to-air missiles and air-to-ground laser and unguided bombs. 
 It's a no-brainer that India needs to have its own <keyword id="6500558" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indigenous">indigenous</keyword> fighter in an era where the supremacy of airpower in shaping modern-day battles is unquestioned, and foreign imports can be choked in times of emergencies. 
 But the way the LCA project has meandered over the years, since it was fi rst approved in August 1983 at a paltry cost of Rs 560 crore to replace the ageing MiG-21s, has tested everyone's patience. So much so that TOI in April 2003, just before then PM <keyword id="47100" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Atal-Bihari-Vajpayee">Atal Bihari Vajpayee</keyword> named it "Tejas", had suggested it be christened "Jet-Ayu" - 'Ayu' being the Hindi word for age, and 'Jatayu', the bird king who fought Ravana in vain to prevent him from abducting Sita. 
 
Down to just 34 fighter squadrons, IAF is of course still fl ying the obsolete MiG-21s. Due to the huge delay in the LCA project, it still has around 250 MiG-21s in its combat fleet, having further staggered their already long-delayed retirement by at least another five years. Not only has the LCA been in the making for 30 years, with deadlines being missed time and again, its overall developmental cost has also zoomed up to Rs 17,269 crore. This includes the Kaveri aero engine, sanctioned in 1989 at a cost of Rs 2,839 crore, which flopped miserably. 
 Consequently, while the first lot of Tejas will be powered by the American <keyword id="45528" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="GE">GE</keyword>-404 engines, the Mark-II ones will have the more powerful GE F-414 engines. Over and above the developmental cost, each Tejas will cost around Rs 210-250 crore. So, the induction of 160 Tejas - 120 for IAF, 40 for Navy - will cost another Rs 35,000 crore. 
 
However, defence scientists pooh-pooh all this talk of high costs. 
 "A fourth-generation-plus fighter, Tejas will still be among the cheapest fighters in its class in the world. It's not easy to develop a digital fl y-by-wire supersonic fighter from scratch, especially when India faced international sanctions for several years after the Pokhran-II nuclear tests," said a <keyword id="9662" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Scientist">scientist</keyword>. 
 Though late in coming, the Tejas is certainly critical for the IAF to meet its lightweight fighter requirements. While the heavyweight fighter category is taken care of by the Sukhoi-30MKIs, the medium range is to be met by the proposed almost $20 billion MMRCA (medium multirole combat aircraft) project to acquire 126 <keyword id="6381048" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rafale">Rafale</keyword> fighters. 
 "The MMRCA and Tejas squadrons are very critical for us to maintain our deterrence capability. Otherwise, our force levels will go down rapidly," says <keyword id="483998" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="IAF-Chief-Air-Chief-Marshal">IAF chief Air Chief Marshal</keyword> NAK Browne.

Tejas: A Rs 50,000 crore bird for India

“Dream is not that which you see while sleeping, it is something that does not let you sleep.” Dr APJ Abdul <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=kalam">Kalam</a>, India’s 11th President who taught the youth of the country to weave beautiful dreams to attain success in life, passed away while delivering lecture at <keyword id="698776" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Management-Shillong">Indian Institute of Management Shillong</keyword> on Monday evening. 
 
Popularly known as ‘the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=MISSILE+MAN">Missile Man</a> of India’, Kalam suddenly collapsed while delivering a lecture on 'Livable <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=planet">Planet</a>' at the management institute. The 83-year-old was immediately wheeled into Bethany hospitals' ICU in a critical condition and was confirmed dead after more than two hours. 
 
The country’s first bachelor President, who was a career scientist turned reluctant politician, ruled over a million hearts as he was one amongst the most respected people of the country. 
 
Kalam was born and raised in Tamil Nadu’s Rameswaram; and after studying physics and aerospace engineering, he had spent the next four decades as a scientist and science administrator, mainly at the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=drdo">DRDO </a>and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=isro">ISRO</a>. 
 He played a major role in India's civilian space program and military missile development efforts, and that is why he was regarded as ‘the <keyword id="1502002" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Missile-Man-of-India">Missile Man of India</keyword>.’ Kalam also played a pivotal organisational, technical and political role in India's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=POKHRAN">Pokhran</a>-II nuclear tests that was conducted in 1998. And for his stupendous work, he received several prestigious awards, including the Bharat Ratna which is India's highest civilian honour.
