Finally a normal yellow taxi decided to ferry them on the condition of paying full Rs 500 without any change in return. The septuagenarians had to shell out Rs 500 for a distance of mere 10 kilometres. Possessing a great sense of humour, the septuagenarian man told the author, “We don’t have any <keyword id="6356023" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Black-Money">black money</keyword>. But a note of Rs 500 at the time of economic black out.”

The Federation of Hotel &amp; Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) is exploring legal remedies with regards to the recent <keyword id="490706" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="supreme-court-order">Supreme Court Order</keyword>, shutting down from 1st April 2017, the sale of liquor at establishments which fall within 500 metres range of State and National Highways. FHRAI is India’s apex body and The World’s Third Largest Hotel &amp; Restaurant Association.

We would not have minded being sacrificed if the ban were to yield results. But reality is that all the job losses and other damages would be wasted. The object sought would not be achieved”. 

 

“Total consolidated loss to both States and to the industry will be around 2 lakh 20,000 crores. The entitre MICE industry including weddings, corporate events will be negatively affected” said Garish Oberoi, FHRAI. “There has been an unprcendented blanket ban on all national highways across the country without seeing the practical aspect of the topography &amp; terrain of the cities, in the process having affected <keyword id="6368036" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hotels">hotels</keyword> &amp; restaurants, who have invested crores of Rupees towards the development of the tourism industry in the country. For example, Darjeeling, which falls on NH 55, has hotels stretched over 77 kms from the very base of the town of Siliguri that are directly affected” further continued TS Walia, FHRAI. 'The judgement has effected those establishments that operated legally and we are not takeaways and serve for consumption in premises only . But I spent well over half of last year on the road. I was supposed to spend well over half of this year being on the road. 'Loop Daddy' Marc Rebillet is making meme-like music about jorts, Juul-ing, and FaceTime sex

The summer is here and so is the time to take that one long vacation in the year. But with so many long weekends coming up every now and then, travelling can burn a hole in the pocket. However, with the budget segment ramping up its services, you may just want to consider them as well. 
	 “It is very encouraging to see that the number of people taking a holiday in the summer is increasing year-on-year. Taking a break on a regular basis is a fast emerging trend; be it a luxurious trip, a weekend getaway, a family trip or a pocket friendly outing. Our mobile bookings have also risen significantly, with over two-fifth of our traffic recorded from smart phones and tablets,” said <keyword id="332366" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sharat-Dhall">Sharat Dhall</keyword>, president of travel portal <keyword id="143718" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yatra-com">Yatra.com</keyword>. 
	 
	He explained that the budget travellers, who accounted for a meager 7% last year, have risen to 26.7% this year. 
	 
	Sharing a similar sentiment, a travel agent, who did not wished to be named, added, “There are a lot of people who want to travel. But with frequent long weekend trips, money becomes a major problem. People are looking at affordable accommodation when they travel to a place. On an average, a traveler spends a minimum of Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 per day while travelling,” said a travel agent who requested anonymity. However, he noted that while more people are also considering <keyword id="507551" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget-hotels">budget hotels</keyword>, there is still apprehension amongst them as they are not sure of the quality of services that will be offered. 
	 
	According to market reports, the budget hotel segment is picking up in cities such as Bangalore and Pune. “Over the past decade, the Pune hotel sector has emerged a formidable competitor to other the hospitality markets in the country, growing from a negligible base of branded hotel rooms in 2005 into becoming one of India’s top five hotel markets in 2014. Over the course, it has weathered multiple storms ranging from significant supply increases to multiple bouts of economic uncertainty, both globally and regionally,” said Mandeep Lamba, managing director of Hotels at JLL India. 
	 
	He explained, “While the Bangalore hotel market today accounts for the largest share of branded economy hotel rooms in the country, Pune comes in a close second with nearly 1,050 branded economy rooms.” 
	 
	Apart from Bangalore and Pune, if you plan to visit the backwaters of Kerala, then do check out the budget hotels in Alleppey. According to Trip Advisor, Bamboo Lagoon Backwaters Front Resort is also one of the great budget hotel options in the city. Similarly, if you want to visit Havelock Islands in the Great Andamans, you will find several nice budget hotels at great prices that are sea facing and offers the calmness that you want away from the busy city life. 
	 
	While this may be the story down South, in the western region such as Sawai Madhopur, Jaipur, Udaipur or even the Great Rann of Kutchh, a traveler can find some great hotels at a reasonable price. 
	 
	Up in the hills, there are plenty of hotels that offer decent services. Dharmshala, Nanital, Manali, Mussoorie among other have slew of budget hotels that a person can pick from. In the east, places such as Gangtok, Darjeeling, Puri in Odisha too have many budget hotels that are known for offering good services at great prices. 
	 
	Interestingly, with Indians becoming avid travellers, budget hotels are realising that they have a large market to tap onto. Besides, firms such as OYO Rooms too have come up that are now upgrading the services offered to a customer in a budget hotel, thus revamping the tainted image of this segment of hotels.

Go low on pocket! Budget hotels pull up
their socks to woo you

With first long weekend of the New Year knocking the doors, Indians are ready to hit the road once again. “The hustle and bustle of urban life seems to be driving Indians to take frequent, short vacations to recharge their batteries. People are travelling using different modes of transport as well, with self driven road trips becoming extremely popular. This year has a large number of extended weekends and we expect to see bookings spike for each of these weekends through the year. The upcoming Republic Day weekend has seen a huge surge in hotel bookings at destinations close to the metros, with a number of these being sold out already,” said Sharat Dhall, president of Yatra. 
 
According to the latest statistics by online travel booking site, Yatra.com, 45% of the people surveyed have made travel plans for the weekend, of which 34% have already made the reservations in advance. 
“In terms of the budget, 42% visitors are opting for destinations that cost less than Rs 6,000 per person for a weekend leisure. While at the other end of the spectrum, 8.8% of the travellers are fine with trips costing Rs 21,000 or more per person,” said Sharat Dhall, president of Yatra. 
 
<keyword id="6359022" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Long-weekends">Long weekends</keyword>: The new trend 
 
According to the survey, 50% of the travellers are booking packages in advance for the long weekends. To make the most of the weekend and not waste much time travelling to the destination, about 33% travellers opt for flights. 
 
Also, the fact that airlines in the country have been regularly coming up with flash sales has also helped make air travel accessible to the regular working class. 
 
“Air bookings for the long weekend have increased by a little over 100% over the same period last year, and the hotels and packages business has grown by 247% over last year. Self-driven travel features prominently in the survey with 30% people planning to drive down to their chosen destinations for the long weekends,” noted Dhall. 
 
What influences the choice? 
 
The survey has revealed that 39% of travellers are willing to travel beyond 400kms on a long weekend trip, whereas 27% prefer to stay within a 200 kms circle. The study also stated that 50% of the travellers preferred Internet to choose their destination. On the other hand, word-of-mouth influenced a good 26% travellers when it came to selecting their destination. 
 
Interestingly, of the 50% people who surf the internet for making their wise choices, 57% preferred 2-3 online travel portals to decide on the place to visit. “Of course, I check for great deals and packages on these websites, when I plan to go for quick trips with my friends. This weekend, we are planning to go to Udaipur and have got a great package on one of these travel sites. It is more economical as well,” said Abhishek Rathi, a senior manager with a private sector bank. 
 
The survey has disclosed that accommodation heavily influences the decision making process of a traveller. Nearly 27% people look for the best hotel prices along with the packages being offered while 20% visitors are particular about the amenities offered by the hotels. Around 26% also bank on customer reviews before selecting a hotel.

According to the study, some of the preferred tourist destinations for quick trips are Goa, Jaipur, Coorg and Puri among others. In the North, travellers preferred places such as Jaipur, Jim Corbett, Amritsar along with Shimla and Varanasi to take a break from the monotony; while in the South, people prefer destinations such as Coorg in Karnataka, Kerala and Pondicherry to relax their minds. In the East, some people preferred the icy hills of the Sikkim and Darjeeling, while other preferred to hop to the shores of Puri in Odisha. In the West, Goa remained the eternal favourite while some chose Mahabaleshwar and Gujarat as well. 
 
Dubai, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia remained the favourite internation destinations for the long weekend trips.
