Let me begin by saying that when I began work as an interior designer and furniture manufacturer in 1971, there were no words such as “entrepreneur” or “branding” or things like Instagram and various other forms of social media that exist today. I became a designer because of family influences and growing in a city like Lucknow which is imbued with tehzeeb and nazakat. I do not think I could have been a designer if I had had parents other than those I was blessed with. They were interested in reading and the acquisition of knowledge. My father believed that books would always remain the central element of civilisation. For us knowledge came from immersive reading, and we were voracious readers. We were always interested in places and peoples. We delighted in reading the atlas and dictionaries. In the last 50 years there have been so many places which were our dream destinations, and which one has now visited……… and many places like Machu Picchu that one has not! Perhaps it is still not too late. Because of our father’s immense love for travel and discovery we saw so much of India. The first heritage site that I ever visited was at the age of nine. That was Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu and the Temple of the Tooth and the Botanical Gardens in Kandy in Ceylon. All of these were early influences and have influenced my design sensibilities. I have a very contemporary mindset but one that is also deeply grounded in our own heritage. This is because one has had the good fortune of travelling through the length and breadth of India. In New Delhi one has also designed the interiors of the British Council Building and Library. In my career this has been a landmark project because this is the largest of their 80 institutes worldwide. It was inaugurated in 1992 by HRH the Prince of Wales. When we were presented to him, he had a very interesting conversation with me regarding the buildings on either side of the British Council. In a long design career of 50 years, I had a break in 1998. I had simply fallen off a ladder in the house and had fractured two of my cerebral vertebrae. That is when I decided I would stop designing hotels which I had done for the past almost 30 years. At that point I thought I would just design residences in and around India and not travel out to Egypt, Bhutan, England, Timbuktu, etc. But life had other plans! I went on to design a large residence in Sri Lanka and was commissioned to design a boutique hotel in the old city of Lahore. Sadly, that project was eventually abandoned. When I was in Lahore for their Literary Festival at the end of February this year when I saw this building standing as is, it made me quite nostalgic. Lahore is a beautiful city and the people are very hospitable. Along this design journey many institutions have asked me to come to give illustrated lectures. We must, with humility and gratitude, help those that are less fortunate. One has been deeply associated with ‘Satyagyan Foundation’ which was an affiliate of ‘World Literacy Canada’. Based in Varanasi, we have worked in about 400 slum areas and have altogether made 23,000 women literate. One has also been associated with ‘Save a Mother’ which was started by the amazing Dr Shiban Gunju. He has reduced the mortality rate of pregnant women by 93%. One was the founding member and last chairperson of ‘Umang’, an NGO that worked for the betterment of street children. These have been my interests and each has been a milestone. Another milestone was co-authoring ‘The Lucknow Cookbook’ with my mother. It is now in its tenth print run and has been declared a classic by Aleph, the publishers. I admire the fact you are doing great things. And I think you should consider that I am a friend of you, and your state," he was quoted saying. 
 
Thrashing the usual conceptions about the state, Tata stated that UP is often "misunderstood and underplayed", and that it will "take its place in the country and lead the way, in many ways". 
 The multi-dimensional MoU was signed by UP chief secretary Alok Ranjan, and the CEO of Tata Trusts, R Venkatraman. CM Akhilesh Yadav stated that he was grateful for Tata's visit to the state, and promised to help Tata Trusts in every way possible. "We, in the government of UP, ask for nothing but your presence in UP. That, itself, should galvanise us, and bring about winds of change in UP," Akhilesh added. 
 
As per the MoU, Tata Trusts will be extending its support to the UP government in running poverty alleviation programmes, for employment generation, and in increasing income and infrastructure development for its citizens. 
 
All work would be monitored and overseen by a joint state-level steering committee that would comprise of representatives of both the state government and the Tata Trusts.

Google Bard AI is now available to everyone — here’s how you can use it for free

In this incident, Mahesh (@<a href="https://twitter.com/Mahesh08716488">Mahesh08716488</a>) shared a tweet with an image of the destroyed phone. He claimed that his brother’s Poco M3 blasted on the morning of November 27. However, he did not give any details about the reason for the blast or if anyone was injured due to the explosion. Poco acknowledged the tweet and responded that customers’ safety was very important and that it took such matters seriously. When we reached out to Poco for a statement, they responded, “at POCO India, customer safety is of utmost importance and we take such matters extremely seriously. At this stage, our team contacted the concerned customer as soon as the issue was notified and is awaiting his visit to the nearest service center. We are committed to examine the issue in detail, and extend all our support to the customer and resolve this on priority. All our devices go through various levels of stringent quality tests to ensure that the quality of the device is not compromised at any level.” We have reached out to the user as well to find out more details about the explosion, however, we are yet to hear from him and we will update the story as we receive a response. New Delhi, Mar 30 () German wholesaler Metro Cash &amp; Carry on Monday asked for a "uniform policy" to be followed by state governments in India for operating stores during the lockdown imposed in the wake of coronavirus pandemic. The company's arm Metro Cash &amp; Carry India said as of now it has adequate stocks of all necessary items, but is still grappling with local authorities in several states over working hours and visits by customers to its stores. Besides, availability of manpower for smooth operation is also an issue as only around 40 per cent manpower is available to operate its cash and carry format wholesale stores. "There should be uniformity in the policy across the states. Even within the same state, there should be the same policy across the cities," Metro Cash &amp; Carry India MD &amp; CEO Arvind Mediratta told . He further said, "While there is clarity from the Centre, at the state level there are a lot of challenges." Out of 28 stores which Metro Cash &amp; Carry operates in India, the company is facing 'severe restrictions' imposed by local authorities at eight stores in cities like Amritsar, Jalandhar, Lucknow, Meerut, Surat, Indore, Vijaywada. "In three stores we are allowed to open only till 12 noon to 1 pm in the afternoon and some places, we are only allowed to deliver kirana (groceries)," he said. Mediratta further said, "In some states like Maharashtra, Delhi and even in cities like Bengaluru, we are allowed to operate stores 24 hours. On the other hand there are states like Andhra Pradesh, MP and Punjab where there are restrictions. There should be uniformity across the states. Even within the same state, there should be the same policy across the cities." In Zirakpur in Punjab, stores are opened for walk-in customers and delivery, while in Amritsar and Jalandhar in the same state, the company is permitted to deliver within fixed hours only, he said. Similarly, in UP, the stores are not allowed to open in Lucknow, but there are no restrictions in Ghaziabad. "I do not know how the government have different policies within the same state," he said, adding "every day the notification keeps on changing also." On manpower shortage, he said there is a "serious impact" because of lesser availability of the staff, which is down to 40 to 45 per cent. "This is not adequate to run a store, we need at least 60 to 65 per cent staff. We are working at curtailed hours," he said, adding "this is certainly affecting our operations". Metro Cash &amp; Carry India is now operating stores only in one shift for eight to nine hours, he added. Commenting on supplies, Mediratta said, "Now we have enough supply. We have received stocks on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and there is no major problem right now. "There were some problems on the first two days of the lockdown as trucks were stopped and not allowed to cross borders, including those trucks with essential items. Then we had a meeting with Minister of Commerce Piyush Goyal and after that it was shorted out. Things are beginning to flow now." Lucknow, Mar 7 () Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi on Saturday directed officials to undertake a survey to ascertain the extent of losses in crops due to the recent hailstorm in the state.In a statement issued here by the UP government, Shahi said, "The department officials must ensure that survey is conducted to ascertain the extent of loss in terms of crops by farmers in the state caused by hailstorm and rain. In 2015, during the SP regime, hailstorm had taken place in some parts of the state. The money, which was meant for the farmers, never reached them. The BJP government has done nothing concrete for the farmers, and seems to be only interested in branding itself.
