7 cold destinations in India to escape the summer heat in May

The country's first <keyword id="9479283" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="lichen-garden">lichen garden</keyword> has been developed in Munsiyari, a <keyword id="9479284" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="picturesque-hill">picturesque hill</keyword> station in Uttarakhand's Kumaun region, by the research wing of the state's forest department. Surrounded by snowcapped peaks, Munsyari was chosen as the site for developing the garden as it is considered a hotspot for lichens also known locally as 'Jhula' or 'Patthar ke Phool', Chief Conservator of Forest (research wing) Sanjiv Chaturvedi under whose guidance the garden was developed told on Sunday. Spread over nearly two acres, the garden boasts of more than 80 species of lichen, used as a key ingredient in the famous Hyderabadi biryani to create its distinctive flavour and in indigenous perfumes for its aromatic properties, he said. The garden was inaugurated and thrown open to the public on Saturday. In view of the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> pandemic the garden has been opened in a limited way for the public to avoid crowding but once the virus' upward surge stops, the facility will be opened in a full-fledged manner for people, Chaturvedi said. "Lichen is a key spice in Hyderabadi biryani without which the flavour is incomplete. It is also used in the preparation of an indigenous perfume in Kannauj. Apart from being used as an essential component in different non-vegetarian dishes especially biryani, it is also used in sunscreen creams, dyes and medicines," the official said. As lichen needs absolutely clean air to grow, it also serves as a significant bio indicator to determine the level of air pollution of a specific area. Lichen also has the ability to separate the minerals by eroding rocks, he said, adding that when lichens die and dissolve into the earth, they leave a mix of mineral and organic matter in the soil which help the growth of other plants. The garden was to be developed in five years but due to the dedication of my team it was completed in just a year, the CCF said. Lichens are a symbiotic organism, usually composed of a fungal partner (mycobiont) and one or more photosynthetic partner (photobiont) which is most often either a green algae or cyanobacterium, Chgaturvedi explained. They mainly grow on the barks of trees, walls, rocks, gravestones roofs and soil. More than 20,000 species of lichens are found around the world. India has around 2,714 species out of which Uttarakhand has 600 species found mainly in Munsiyari, Ashkot, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Ramnagar and Nainital, he said. Dehradun/Pithoragarh, <keyword id="20396265" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wildlife-experts" source="keywords">Wildlife experts</keyword> have interpreted the sighting of a lowland bird like the peacock at a height of 6,500 feet in <keyword id="19918812" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttarakhand" source="keywords">Uttarakhand</keyword> as an unusual development caused by <keyword id="23460848" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ecological-changes" source="keywords">ecological changes</keyword> in the <keyword id="20128077" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Himalayan-region" source="keywords">Himalayan region</keyword> due to increased <keyword id="20823384" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="human-activity" source="keywords">human activity</keyword>. The bird was spotted twice in the forests of <keyword id="20604235" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bageshwar-district" source="keywords">Bageshwar district</keyword> in the state. It was first seen in the Kafligair forest range in April and then in Kathayatbara forests on October 5, a senior official said. "It is surprising that the peacock which is usually found at an elevation of 1,600 feet has been sighted at an altitude of 6,500 feet. It is due to ecological changes that have started affecting wildlife migration," Dhyan Singh Karayat, a forest official in Bageshwar forest division said on Monday. Senior scientist of Dehradun-based <keyword id="20392082" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wildlife-Institute-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Wildlife Institute of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Wildlife Institute of India">Wildlife Institute of India</keyword> (WII) Dr Suresh Kumar said though such sightings are not common they should not baffle wildlife experts. The peacock falls into the generalist species of bird that is not so selective or choosy about its habitat. Though, traditionally a lowland bird, it has been found at higher than normal elevations in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh also, Kumar said. One reason may be that even the hill regions are no longer as cold as they used to be and the peacock finds the climate in higher altitudes conducive enough for habitation, he said. "Increased human activity like farming and expanding human settlements in the higher reaches of the mountains have led to warmer conditions at higher altitudes which may have led to this <keyword id="23460850" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="altitudinal-migration" source="keywords">altitudinal migration</keyword> of the peacock. But it may be a seasonal shift too, " Kumar told PTI. "With the onset of winter, it will get colder in the hills and the lowland bird may retreat to its original habitat conditions," he said. When asked whether it reflects a habitat-shifting tendency among peacocks in general, Kumar said it would be premature to draw a conclusion like that with just two sightings. However, if such sightings become more frequent, it would definitely reflect a general tendency among peacocks to shift habitat, he said.

Peacock sighting at 6,500 feet in Uttarakhand unusual, say experts

<keyword id="22003705" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-traders" source="keywords">Indian traders</keyword> involved in <keyword id="22003703" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="border-trade" source="keywords">border trade</keyword> with China through the <keyword id="22003704" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lipulekh-pass" source="keywords">Lipulekh pass</keyword> in Pithoragarh district since 1992, have requested the central government to take up the issue of resumption of border trade through this route with Beijing. The trade route was closed rather suddenly after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019, forcing Indian traders to return from the <keyword id="22003706" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Taklakot-mart" source="keywords">Taklakot mart</keyword> in Tibet leaving behind their woollen products. Five years have passed but the route has not been opened, an organisation of border traders in Dharchula said. The traders who belong to the <keyword id="22005864" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhotia-tribe" source="keywords">Bhotia tribe</keyword> started to raise their demand for reopening of the trade route through Lipulekh after China recently began the process of implementing a pact, in which it had agreed to open all 14 trade passes with Nepal. The implementation of the agreement inked by China and Nepal in December, 2022 began on May 25 this year, when China opened Piangi pass situated in Dolpa district of eastern Nepal, president of Bharat Tibetan Simant Vyapar Samiti, Dharchula Jeewan Singh Rongkali said. Three more passes along the Indo-Tibet border in the western region of Nepal that fall in the districts of Humla, Bajang and Darchula will be opened on June 20, 30 and 25 respectively, he said. "We have so far sent 22 applications to the government of India requesting it to take up with the Chinese authorities the reopening of the trade route through Lipulekh pass but have received no response so far," Rongkali said. According to Rongkali, Indian tribal traders from Dharchula alone have left trading items worth Rs 15 lakh in <keyword id="22005865" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="taklakot" source="keywords">Taklakot</keyword> Mart of Tibet at the time of closure of border trade in 2019, following the Covid-19 pandemic. "We have no information if our stored goods are safe or in a state of decay. They were stored in plywood covers at the time of closure of trade," Rongkali said. "We want trade with China to be resumed through Lipulekh pass but if for some reason it is not possible then the traders should be given 15 days' time to go to Taklakot to ring back their goods," he said. Goods of over 450 Indian tribal traders have been lying there for the last 5 years, he said. According to Rongkali, over 450 Indian traders used to supply essential goods to villagers of over 45 villages of western Tibet through this trade route since 1992. "Out of over 1.5 crore trade annually, we have paid lakhs of rupees towards customs duty and other taxes to the government of India," said Rongkali. China announced in the year 2022 that it will build trans Himalayan multi-dimensional connectivity with Nepal to restructure the road and communication network with that country, Rongkali said. "As China has not given permission to open our passes along the Indo-China border, we have an apprehension that the mart made for Indian traders in Gakkhu town of Taklakot could be handed over to Nepalese traders," said Rongkali.

Pithoragarh, Jul 15 () In yet another example of the close people-to-people connect between India and Nepal, a groom from Jibi village near here on Wednesday brought home his just married Nepalese bride to a warm reception. The couple was welcomed by the Indian security personnel at Dharchula as they entered India through the border bridge on river Kali, SDM Dharchula A K Shukla said. "The administration of both the countries opened the bridge gates to facilitate the passage of the newly wed couple to India where the girl's in-laws live," the official said. The groom Kamlesh Chand, a resident of Jibi village near Pithoragarh, married Radhika, daughter of Tigram from Dhulakot village of Darchula district in Nepal, he said. "After getting the permission to enter Nepal for a very short time, we went there and returned immediately after solemnizing the marriage" said Kamlesh Chand. Pithoragarh, Apr 16 () Completion of the 150-km Tanakpur-Pithoragarh stretch of the chardham all-weather road project will be delayed by nearly six months due to the shortage of labourers amid the ongoing lockdown, an official said on Thursday."This particular stretch of the project was to be completed in June this year. However, it is not likely to be ready before November now as all migrant labourers working on the project have left since their exodus began with the announcement of the lockdown," NHAI Executive Engineer L D Mathela who is in charge of the project said. The shortage of labourers and technical staff has affected cutting, hot mixing, crushing and quarrying work of the project, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) official said.Even if work on the project resumes after May 3 it is bound to be affected by the onset of monsoon in June-July, he further said.Frequent rain and landslides during monsoon often lead to suspension of work on the project slowing its progress, Mathela said.The chardham all-weather road is a pet project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who keeps monitoring its progress personally. Dehradun, May 23 () Twenty more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Uttarakhand on Saturday in the highest single day spike in cases so far taking the state's coronavirus tally to 173 while one more person infected with the deadly virus died at AIIMS, Rishikesh. The latest cases were reported from Almora, Champawat, Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital, Pithoragarh and Uttarkashi, a state health department bulletin said. Champawat which falls in the green zone reported the highest number of cases at seven followed by Almora and Uttarkashi (three each), Pithoragarh, Nainital and Dehradun (two each) and Haridwar (one), it said. With migrants returning home in large numbers there has been a sudden rise in the number of cases being reported daily. Meanwhile, another COVID-19 patient died at AIIMS, Rishikesh late on Friday night with authorities attributing her death to respiratory failure/ carcinoma oesophagus and not coronavirus This is the second instance of a COVID-19 patient dying in the state since the outbreak of the pandemic. The patient was also suffering from cancer and had undergone an operation recently, COVID-19 nodal officer for corona cases at AIIMS, Rishikesh Madhur Uniyal said. The first COVID-19 patient had died in Uttarakhand on May 1. The 56-year-old woman had been admitted at AIIMS, Rishikesh after a brain stroke. She tested positive for coronavirs after being admitted at the facility and died there a few days later. Dehradun, Oct 3 () The COVID-19 death toll in Uttarakhand rose to 648 on Saturday with 12 more fatalities, while 503 fresh cases pushed the infection tally in the state to 50,062, a state health department bulletin said. Of the fresh cases, Dehradun district reported the highest 142 positive cases, followed by Haridwar 99, Tehri 72, Nainital 71, Uttarkashi 34, Udham Singh Nagar 32, Pauri 16, Bageshwar 13, Champawat 10, Rudraprayag seven, Chamoli four and Pithoragarh three, it said. Twelve more COVID-19 patients died, taking the death toll in the state to 648, it said. A total of 41,095 COVID-19 patients have recovered in the state and the number of infected patients under treatment is 8,076, it said. Dehradun, Aug 17 () Uttarakhand on Monday reported six more deaths due to COVID-19 and 319 fresh infections, the state health department said. With this, the state's COVID-19 death toll has mounted to 158 and the infection tally reached 12,493. Four patients died at AIIMS Rishikesh and two at Haldwani's Sushila Tiwari Hospital, according to the state health department's medical bulletin. Haridwar district reported the highest number of 109 fresh cases, Uttarkashi 77, Rudraprayag 41, Udham Singh Nagar 38, Nainital 23, Tehri 15, Dehradun 10, Bageshwar three, and Pithoragarh, Champawat and Chamoli one each, the bulletin said. A majority of the new patients had a travel history to Maharashtra's Mumbai. According to the bulletin, 1,135 of 1,836 patients have recovered from the disease while nine have migrated out of the state. There are 668 active cases at present, the bulletin said.
