The popularity of Pinot noir went through the roof after Sideways, taking the wine industry by surprise. Powerful and aromatic, Pinot noir can be deliciously overwhelming to the senses. Think woody and cherry. As it is a difficult grape to grow, Pinot noir tends to be a bit more expensive.<br />
<br /> Zinfandel is the <keyword id="1692735" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rodney-Dangerfield">Rodney Dangerfield</keyword> of wines. Strong in alcohol and spicy, these qualities can be disruptive to a great meal. That being said, wine producers are mellowing those attributes — finally earning Zin some respect.<br />
<br /> Chardonnay is an accessible <keyword id="6179" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="White-Wine">white wine</keyword> for beginners. A gentle wine, fruity, with smoky touches. You’ll look impressive selecting a random Chardonnay from the menu to compliment your seafood, you can’t go wrong. Pinot blanc is a bit similar to Chard, with a sharper, crisper tone. A bit dry, with hints of spice and apple. Next is Pinot Gris, a subtle, lighter wine with touch of honey and citrus.<br />

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Like all huge internet companies, LinkedIn invents a lot of software to keep it up and running.</p><p>And like most Valley companies, it turns around and gives that software away for free, so others can use it and add to it, which helps LinkedIn add new features to it.</p><p>That's a process called open source and it has not only forever changed the software industry, but<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-open-compute-project-history-2015-6"> is starting to change the internet hardware industry too.</a></p><p>And when you invent something, you get to name it.</p><p>LinkedIn, it turns out, has a lot of oddball names for its open source projects. So we asked LinkedIn: What's up with that?</p><p><strong>Project Name: <a href="http://data.linkedin.com/opensource/voldemort">Voldemort</a></strong></p><p>Project lead Jay Kreps was reading the last Harry Potter book, and the book's villain Voldemort had split himself into many pieces, each of which had to be destroyed to kill him. That made Kreps  think of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/?title=Distributed_computing">a distributed computer system</a>.</p><p>Kreps says: "I don't know whether it is nerdier to be reading Harry Potter or to be wondering what kind of consistency protocol Voldemort uses when keeping all his pieces up-to-date, but regardless, the name stuck."</p><p><strong>What it is/does:</strong> Open source key value storage system, which is a method for storing and finding data in certain kinds of databases.</p><p><strong>Project Name: <a href="http://kafka.apache.org/">Kafka</a></strong></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The team had just finished using a lot of Harry Potter-themed project names (Voldemort, <a href="http://data.linkedin.com/opensource/azkaban">Azkaban,</a> Lumos, etc.) and were over Harry Potter so they went with something more random, Kafka, after the writer.</p><p><strong>What it is/does:</strong> This is a system for writing things down that replaced a very complex system for writing things down, Kafkaesque if you will.</p><p>(In geek speak: Apache Kafka is an open-source message broker project developed by the Apache Software Foundation written in Scala, designed to handle real-time data feeds).</p><p><strong>Project Name: <a href="https://github.com/linkedin/pinot">Pinot</a></strong></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The team chose the name for two reasons. First, everyone loves pinot noir wine.</p><p>Second, the pinot noir grape is the toughest of all red varietals to grow and process into wine, yet can produce some of the most complex wine available. This is much like data, which can be so tough to gather and analyze, but so incredibly useful once it's put to work in the right way.</p><p><strong>What it is/does:</strong> Pinot is a distributed online analytics infrastructure, meaning it lets LinkedIn slice and dice huge amounts of data. It's used at LinkedIn for nearly real-time analytics.</p><p>(In geek speak: it does large scale multi dimensional time series data).</p><p><strong>Project Name: <a href="http://linkedin.github.io/Cubert/">Cubert</a></strong></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The Cubert name owes its origin to the project team's fascination with the Rubik's Cube. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.facebook.com/AtoZWineworks/photos">Facebook/A to Z Wineworks</a></span></p><p class="caption">Olivier and Anna grow grapes that find their way into A to Z Winework's rosé blend.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Deb Hatcher knows wine like she knows the alphabet.</p><p>For over 14 years, she and a few friends have run Oregon's largest winery, <a href="https://www.atozwineworks.com/">A to Z Wineworks</a>.</p><p>The company is somewhat unique in that instead of sourcing grapes from one or two so-called "single-origin" vineyards, A to Z Wineworks has worked with over 100 vineyards <span>using biodynamic or organic farming principles in order to create its</span> blended wines.</p><p>According to Hatcher, blended wines make up some of the most underrated bottles on the shelf. They offer the complexity and breadth of several wines, without the price tag.</p><p>"People think single-origin vineyards are the end-all-be-all," Hatcher tells Business Insider during a retreat for companies honored by <a href="http://bftw.bthechange.com/">Best for the World</a>, an annual list that celebrates businesses that use sustainable practices and serve as a force for good.</p><p>The A to Z Wineworks Oregon Pinot Gris is a ripe and juicy blend formed from 40 vineyards' grapes. The company boasts of its "exuberant aromas" and lush fruit underpinnings. It comes with a price tag of $15, which is roughly two to three times cheaper than single-origin bottles.</p><p>Winemakers can charge a premium for single-origin wines because of their "boutique" quality.</p><p>A chardonnay made down the road at Big Table Farm in Gaston, Oregon, retails for <a href="http://www.bigtablefarm.com/our-wine/">$85</a>, which is not unusual. The newfound interest is good news for wineries, who can make alterations to their blended formulas year-to-year.
