Sanjeev Kumar, former CTO of Pine Labs, will now move to a new role within the company and head the research and development (R&amp;D) vertical. Phanimohan Kalagara has over two decades of experience in the field of technology having worked in ecommerce, financial technology, and computer-aided design &amp; computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) industries. He also has expertise in emerging technologies like virtual reality. “With Pine Labs, I see a massive opportunity to make a substantial difference to the future of merchant commerce in Asia. Looking forward to being part of this team that is set to shift the fintech landscape in Asia," Kalagara said in a press note. He has previously worked as the senior vice president of product and engineering at Flipkart, senior director of engineering PayPal and director of software development at Advanced Interactive Systems. He spent 12 years working with PayPal and three years at Flipkart. “We have made several new appointments in the past one year to bolster our technology capabilities. Phani [Kalagara] comes with a wealth of experience in product and engineering and is the right man to lead our Technology team during this exciting phase of growth for the company,” Amrish Rau, chief executive of Pine Labs, said. The company has reportedly hired investment bank Morgan Stanley to manage the proposed IPO. The Noida-based fintech startup has raised $838 million to date from marquee investors like IIFL Asset Management, Fidelity Management and Research Company, Neuberger Berman Loan Advisers Holdings and more. Pine Labs had raised $100 million from Invesco Developing Markets Fund in September, and it is now valued at $3 billion. IPO-bound Pine Labs appoints former Flipkart, PayPal exec Phanimohan Kalagara as CTO

India's gross <keyword id="6354679" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="gst">GST</keyword> revenue collection fell below the psychological mark of Rs 1 lakh crore for the first time this year, clocking Rs 92,849 crore in June 2021, as collections fell due to disruptions caused by the fresh wave of Covid-19. Though the GST revenues during June 2021 are lower than the over Rs 1 lakh crore collections recorded in the previous month and a record Rs 1.41 lakh crore collection made in April, it is still a growth over June 2020 collections when GST numbers had remained low due to the first set of lockdowns. Most tax experts had feared that the real impact of the pandemic and lockdowns in different parts of the country would pull down GST revenues significantly in May and then in June. "The revenues for the month of June 2021 are 2 per cent higher than the GST revenues in the same month last year", a <keyword id="47209" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Finance-Ministry">finance ministry</keyword> statement said. According to the statement, the gross GST revenue collected in the month of June is Rs 92,849 crore of which CGST is Rs 16,424 crore, SGST is Rs 20,397, <keyword id="6360947" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IGST">IGST</keyword> is Rs 49,079 crore (including Rs 25,762 crore collected on import of goods) and Cess is Rs 6,949 crore (including Rs 809 crore collected on import of goods). The June numbers include <keyword id="4943720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="gst-collection">GST collection</keyword> from domestic transactions between 5th June to 5th July 2021 since taxpayers were given various relief measures in the form of waiver or reduction in interest on delayed return filing for 15 days for the return filing month June '21 for the taxpayers with the aggregate turnover upto Rs 5 crore in the wake of the second wave. During this month the government has settled Rs 19,286 crore to CGST and Rs 16,939 crore to SGST from IGST as regular settlement, the statement said. With June collections staying close to below the Rs 1 lakh crore mark, it would be the first month after a gap of eight months in a row when GST revenues had remained above the threshold. The collection is surprising as most of the States have been under strict lockdown due to the pandemic. The GST collection for June, 2021 is related to the business transactions made during May, 2021. During May, 2021, most of the States/UTs were under either complete or partial lockdown due to Covid. A finance ministry statement said that the e-way bill data for the month of May 2021 shows that during the month, 3.99 crore e-way bills were generated as compared to 5.88 crore in the month of April 2021, down by more than 30 per cent. However, with reduction in caseload and easing of lockdowns, the e-way bills generated during June 2021 are 5.5 crore which indicates recovery of trade and business. The daily average generation of e-way bills for the first two weeks of April 2021 was 20 lakh, which came down to 16 lakh in the last week of April 2021 and further to 12 lakh in the two weeks between 9th to 22nd May. Thereafter, the ministry said, the average generation of e-way bills has been increasing and has again reached the 20 lakh level since the week beginning 20th June. Therefore, it is expected that while the GST revenues have dipped during the month of June, the revenues will see an increase again from July 2021 onwards, the finance ministry said. "While the collections are lower than Rs 1 Trillion, which had become the norm for the past few months, considering the fact that it relates to transactions in May 2021 which was badly impacted by the pandemic, it would be considered as a very satisfactory collection. Samsung Galaxy F22 launched in India starting at ₹12,499

Scientists at the <keyword id="150557" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-Oxford">University of Oxford</keyword> have started vaccinations of a <keyword id="11578976" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="novel-hiv-vaccine">novel HIV vaccine</keyword> candidate as part of a Phase I clinical trial in the UK. The goal of the trial is to evaluate the safety, tolerability and immunogenicity of the HIVconsvX vaccine -- a mosaic vaccine targeting a broad range of HIV-1 variants, making it potentially applicable for HIV strains in any geographical region. Thirteen healthy, HIV-negative adults, aged 18-65 and who are considered not to be at high risk of infection, will initially receive one dose of the vaccine followed by a further booster dose at four weeks. "An effective <keyword id="1180256" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="HIV-vaccine">HIV vaccine</keyword> has been elusive for 40 years. This investment will now value Mosambee at upwards of $100 million, PineLabs has revealed. The leadership team at Mosambee will continue to operate independently and serve the needs of their customers spread across diverse industries. Founded in 2008 by Alok Arora, Bhushan Thaker and Sameer Chugh, Mosambee is a payment solution company that caters to both online and offline merchants in India and six other countries. The company claims to have a base of 1 million small, medium enterprises (SME) merchants and various government departments, who use Mosambee’s solutions to digitise their payment collections. “With the extensive reach of Pine Labs and their portfolio companies, we aim to continue to deliver strong profitability and breakthrough solutions to our clients,” Mosambee’s cofounder Chugh said. According to business intelligence platform Crunchbase, Mosambee has raised over $2.5 million prior to this. It is backed by Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) Venture Capital and Rajasthan Venture Capital Fund. Earlier this year, Mosambee announced the acquisition of Cashless Technologies that runs Benow, a ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ startup. “Ever since its founding, Mosambee has made tremendous progress in elevating the merchant experience through cutting-edge fintech solutions. They were a natural fit for us due to our shared purpose of making innovative fintech products accessible to all and driving forward the digital payment revolution in India,” Amrish Rau, the chief executive officer (CEO) of PineLabs, said in a statement. Founded in 1998 by Lokvir Kapoor, Pine Labs is a merchant payment solutions firm that enables businesses to accept online and offline digital retail transactions. The company powers over 250,000 merchants across over 675,000 merchant network touchpoints in India and Southeast Asia. Pine Labs serves prominent large, mid-sized and small merchants across Asia and the Middle East, including Apple, Starbucks Corp, McDonald's Corp and more. It is planning on hitting the public market soon, and filed for a initial public offering (IPO) in the US in January this year. The company is reportedly planning to raise half a billion dollars from the public market, at a valuation of $6-7 billion. And, no surprise, making tires requires significant amounts of crude oil, which is helping warm the planet.Because of these concerns, many tire giants are looking to find more environmentally friendly ingredients.Bridgestone is exploring how a desert shrub called guayule could serve as a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bridgestone.com/technology_innovation/natural_rubber/guayule/">source of natural rubber</a>.Michelin introduced a tire in 2022 that the company said was made of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.michelin.com/en/press-releases/the-award-commends-michelins-commitment-to-producing-tires-containing-100-sustainable-materials-by-2050-with-an-interim-target-of-40-by-2030/">45% sustainable materials</a> — including components from recycled tires, steel comprised of recycled scrap metal, and silica made from rice husks. The company plans to make tires from only sustainable materials by 2050.Goodyear, for its part, has said it plans to <a target="_blank" href="https://news.goodyear.eu/goodyear-sets-goal-to-fully-replace-petroleum-derived-oils-by-2040/">replace all of</a> the petroleum-derived oils it uses by 2040.Chris Helsel, senior vice president, global operations and chief technology officer at Goodyear, told Insider the company plans to begin selling tires made of 70% renewable materials before the end of 2023.The company this year demonstrated a tire made of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/goodyear-unveils-90-sustainable-material-demonstration-tire-approved-for-road-use-301713430.html">90% sustainable materials</a>. It incorporates pine tree resins, recycled polyester, and soybean oil that can reduce demand for petroleum products."That oil is actually giving us better low-temperature performance," he said, adding that the soybean oil isn't what's used in food production. The company didn't want to trade one problem for another by using resources that could be feeding people. "We're also very careful that it doesn't compete with food," he said. "It's the byproduct of processing. It's not that we're saying instead of using soybeans for people's food, use it for our tires."Part of the push for better tire ingredients is also coming from regulators. In July, California <a target="_blank" href="https://dtsc.ca.gov/2023/07/26/news-release_t-06-23/#:~:text=SACRAMENTO%20%E2%80%93%20To%20protect%20California's%20environment,tire%20cracking%20and%20extends%20the">adopted a rule</a> that will require companies selling tires in the nation's largest car market to look for a safer alternative to the chemical 6PPD. But those were postponed after a spike in the number of cases of coronavirus during the second wave of the pandemic.
