Sanjeev Kumar, former CTO of Pine Labs, will now move to a new role within the company and head the research and development (R&amp;D) vertical. Phanimohan Kalagara has over two decades of experience in the field of technology having worked in ecommerce, financial technology, and computer-aided design &amp; computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) industries. He also has expertise in emerging technologies like virtual reality. “With Pine Labs, I see a massive opportunity to make a substantial difference to the future of merchant commerce in Asia. Looking forward to being part of this team that is set to shift the fintech landscape in Asia," Kalagara said in a press note. He has previously worked as the senior vice president of product and engineering at Flipkart, senior director of engineering PayPal and director of software development at Advanced Interactive Systems. He spent 12 years working with PayPal and three years at Flipkart. “We have made several new appointments in the past one year to bolster our technology capabilities. Phani [Kalagara] comes with a wealth of experience in product and engineering and is the right man to lead our Technology team during this exciting phase of growth for the company,” Amrish Rau, chief executive of Pine Labs, said. Pine Labs is expected to file the preliminary paperwork for its public listing by the end of October. The company has reportedly hired investment bank Morgan Stanley to manage the proposed IPO. Pine Labs had raised $100 million from Invesco Developing Markets Fund in September, and it is now valued at $3 billion. IPO-bound Pine Labs appoints former Flipkart, PayPal exec Phanimohan Kalagara as CTO

Scientists at the <keyword id="150557" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-Oxford">University of Oxford</keyword> have started vaccinations of a <keyword id="11578976" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="novel-hiv-vaccine">novel HIV vaccine</keyword> candidate as part of a Phase I clinical trial in the UK. The goal of the trial is to evaluate the safety, tolerability and immunogenicity of the HIVconsvX vaccine -- a mosaic vaccine targeting a broad range of HIV-1 variants, making it potentially applicable for HIV strains in any geographical region. Thirteen healthy, HIV-negative adults, aged 18-65 and who are considered not to be at high risk of infection, will initially receive one dose of the vaccine followed by a further booster dose at four weeks. "An effective <keyword id="1180256" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="HIV-vaccine">HIV vaccine</keyword> has been elusive for 40 years. In what could be a big breakthrough in medical science, researchers at the University of Oxford start phase-1 trial of a novel HIV vaccine

Other early investors, Venture Highway, Y Combinator, Global Founders Capital and new Global Investors like General Catalyst, Rocketship VC, and <keyword id="2779666" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Greenoaks-Capital">Greenoaks Capital</keyword> also participated in the Series A round, a statement said. FamPay will use the latest round of funding to build a leadership team to further fuel growth, it added. FamPay makes it convenient for teenagers to make online and offline payments through FamPay app as well as FamCard. In addition to payment products, FamPay also offers gamified savings experiences. "FamPay is creating a market segment that a lot of brands don't focus on today. It's their (teenage users) first step at being responsible with money, their first step into adulthood. We plan to stay with them from this first step throughout their financial journey by evolving the product as they grow," Kush Taneja, co-founder of FamPay, said. The company has crossed 2 million registered users within 8 months of its launch and has been averaging 100 per cent month-on-month growth. Teenager-focused payments startup FamPay raises $38 million led by Elevation Capital and Sequoia Capital

Merchant commerce platform <keyword id="1552189" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pine-Labs">Pine Labs</keyword> on Monday said it has completed a new round of financing from investors including Baron Capital Group, Duro Capital, <keyword id="4699572" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="marshall-wace">Marshall Wace</keyword>, Moore Strategic Ventures, and <keyword id="252562" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ward-Ferry-Management">Ward Ferry Management</keyword>. Existing investors Temasek, Lone Pine Capital, and Sunley House Capital also participated in this <keyword id="6357455" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Funding">funding</keyword> round, a statement said. "We raised USD 285 million. We want to thank Puri Kaaynath for supporting and backing us. Our teams, families, customers, and investors," Pine Labs CEO B Amrish Rau said in a LinkedIn post. This translates to about ₹2089 crore. In December last year, Pine Labs had announced raising funding from Lone Pine Capital, valuing it at over USD 2 billion (about ₹14,700 crore). In January 2020, <keyword id="6368201" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="mastercard">Mastercard</keyword> had invested in the company, placing the <keyword id="2461546" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="FinTech">fintech</keyword> firm in the <keyword id="3009432" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="unicorn-club">unicorn club</keyword> (companies with a valuation of USD 1 billion). Incorporated in Singapore, Pine Labs' key investors include Sequoia India, Actis Capital, Temasek, PayPal, and Mastercard. "In this significantly oversubscribed round, in addition to primary proceeds, Pine Labs enabled secondary transactions for its founder, employees, and early shareholders as it is already a well-financed company with a strong balance sheet and has been EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) profitable for several years," a statement said. Pine Labs currently serves more than 1.5 lakh merchants across Asia and the Middle East. Its payment acceptance and merchant commerce solutions including enterprise automation systems such as inventory management and customer relationship management. Its stored value platform includes issuing, processing, and distributing digital gift cards for corporate customers around the world. Pine Labs had recently launched its popular Buy Now, Pay Later proposition in Malaysia and plans to take its integrated Pay Later installment solution to newer markets in Southeast Asia. Last month, Pine Labs had also announced the acquisition of Fave, a Southeast Asian consumer fintech platform. "This is an exciting phase in our journey as we enter newer markets. We excel in enterprise merchant payments and now want to scale new frontiers in the online space as well, at the same time continue to power the credit and commerce needs of our offline merchant partners," Rau said in a statement. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Trump says he does not hold a liquor license anywhere in the United States.</li><li>Keeping his name off the paperwork can insulate him from laws barring felons from holding licenses.</li></ul>Keeping his name off the paperwork may protect former President Donald Trump if state officials anywhere in the US try to revoke liquor licenses at Trump-branded properties due to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-fundraises-guilty-verdict-mahattan-trial-34-counts-2024-5">his new felony status</a>, experts told Business Insider.New Jersey officials revealed this week that they are looking at the licenses at his three golf courses there.The licenses remain current at the three golf courses, located in Colts Neck, Bedminster, and Pine Hill, a spokesperson for the New Jersey Attorney General's office said, confirming that the division of alcoholic beverage control is "reviewing" the status of the licenses.More than a dozen bars and restaurants serve alcohol on the premises of Trump-branded or Trump-owned hotels and golf courses in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nj.gov/lps/abc/downloads/abchandbook02.pdf">New Jersey</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://sla.ny.gov/system/files/documents/2022/05/stateliquorauthority-retaillicenseeshandbookrevised5-6-2022.pdf">New York</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dramshopexpert.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Florida-Responsible-Alcoholic-Beverage-Retailers-Handbook.pdf">Florida,</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.abc.ca.gov/licensing/">California</a>, a survey by Business Insider found.These states prohibit felons or people convicted of "moral" offenses such as fraud from holding a liquor license.But Trump "is not the holder of any liquor license in New Jersey, and he is not an officer or director of any entity that holds a liquor license in New Jersey — or anywhere in the United States for that matter," the GOP presidential frontrunner said through a spokesman.That may keep him insulated.Trump may not be responsible for liquor licenses held in the name of his tenants or under LLCs for which he is not on the paperwork, experts said.If Trump's name is not connected to the license, then his conviction could be moot, said William Fay, a former New Jersey deputy attorney general who worked with the enforcement bureau of the state's division of alcoholic beverage control.Just because Trump's name is in the title of the LLC, doesn't mean he's a member or owner, Fay said.If he is a member of the LLC, then simply being licensed as an LLC wouldn't offer any sort of protection. If he's not a member, it could, Fay said.<h2 id="e42a26df-ad9c-4906-bdbc-b94966fbbe4a">But there are loopholes to this loophole</h2>"Just because he is not on the paperwork doesn't mean he's scot-free," explained Aaron H. Pierce, a Manhattan-based attorney who specializes in alcoholic beverage-control law in New York.Trump-branded properties in Manhattan house a half-dozen bars and restaurants that serve alcohol, including the memorabilia-crammed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/empty-classified-folder-on-display-at-trump-tower-bar-msnbc-2022-9">"45 Wine &amp; Whiskey Bar"</a> at Trump Tower.Say Trump is landlord to the bar operators at one of these properties, and it's the bar operators who hold the liquor license, Pierce said.Or say the bar is owned by an LLC for which Trump is not listed as a director or officer, he added.If Trump is charging the bar a flat rent, his felony status won't impact that liquor license. But if he is directly profiting from liquor sales — meaning getting a cut of the bar till — then that's another story, said Pierce, partner at the business law firm <a target="_blank" href="https://piercekwok.com/">Pierce &amp; Kwok LLP</a>."If he's not on the paperwork, but he's profiting directly from the sale of alcohol, then he's not off the hook," he said.Trump would still have options, though, even if his hush-money conviction voided one or more of his liquor licenses.In New York, Trump could ask for a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nycourts.gov/courthelp/criminal/CRD.shtml">certificate of relief from civil disabilities,</a> Pierce said.A "CRD," as it's called, would be issued by the judge at or after sentencing, and it can help someone with a conviction overcome certain licensing requirements.If New Jersey determines that Trump's hush-money conviction disqualifies him as a licensee, as it's a crime of "moral turpitude," Trump could divest from the LLC that owns the license, said Fay, the former prosecutor at the division's enforcement bureau."As I understand, it involves some sort of misrepresentations, so I would assume there's some fraud in that — so theoretically, it would be a moral turpitude crime," Fay said. "Then, yeah, the next option would be to divest his interest.""People do tend to pass it on to other LLC members. Sometimes you'll see family members," said Fay. "But I would imagine this would be under some sort of close review at the ABC to make sure it's above board."Trump could also have his lawyers make the case at a hearing before an administrative judge that his conviction does not qualify for license-revocation, Fay said.Challenging the revocation could take months or years, during which the license would stay in place, Fay said."I don't imagine that will happen here," Fay said of a potential hearing. "There may be conversations that occur proactively, whether it's the golf courses or Trump himself, to take action to absolve himself of a potential issue."

I was homeless.My friend told me I could stay at hers indefinitely until I got back on my feet. But I felt frustrated because I didn't know where to go.Coming from Peru, and as an immigrant, I wanted to pursue the American dream. For that, I needed to become independent and live in my own place.<h2 id="0aab2b1a-7a9c-4493-9296-41094f455b27">My divorce hit me hard</h2>When I came to the US for the first time in 2011, I arrived without knowing anything. I came here with a lot of excitement, but it didn't quite work out. I endured almost six years of bad marriage.It was a marriage of over 30 years. He came to the United States first. I left my art business in Peru to be with him.In 2016, I got a divorce. It was very hard. I had to leave his house. I eventually moved into a tiny studio apartment in Alexandria that cost me $1,700 a month.The only requirement was to pay three months' rent upfront, so I took it.But rent started going up by $100 each time landlords renewed the tenancy agreement. I felt financially and emotionally affected.My daughter and I felt deprived of privacy, so we decided to move out. But we couldn't find anything. We were priced out of the city.A friend told me: "Why don't you apply for housing with Affordable Homes &amp; Communities?"I went, and the building manager at the time told me that she was going to put me on the waiting list because there were so many people waiting to rent.I was on the applicant's list for about eight months. They eventually called me.I was very excited. I fell in love with the building structure. It's now Tuesday, and the first time since 2022 that this isn't the first workday of the week after the US had two three-day holiday weekends in a row. Boo! I'm Matt Weinberger, deputy editor of Insider's tech analysis team, filling in for my colleague Diamond Naga Siu for the next few days. There's a saying that you should shoot for the moon, because even if you miss, you'll land among the stars. Well, we turn our attentions now to Google, where its famed X labs — better known as its "moonshot factory," where futuristic initiatives like the Waymo self-driving cars got their start — is scaling back its science-fictional fantasies and buckling down to work on more Earthly concerns like generating revenue, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-layoff-moonshot-x-development-sergey-brin-larry-page-astro-2023-01">Insider reports</a>.It's yet another sign that the tech industry is very different than it was even a year ago. Remote work scams on the rise. Job-seekers tell Insider that they were almost duped into sending money to a prospective employer that turned out to be a scam artist in disguise. Laid off and locked out at ScaleAI.
