<ul><li><keyword id="58687" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Janata-Party">Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword> (BJP)’s Om Birla is nominated to become the 17th Lok Sabha Speaker. </li><li>The 57 year old Birla, was once a key leader of the Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha and reportedly has close ties with <keyword id="6355521" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="amit-shah">Amit Shah</keyword>. </li></ul>Om Birla, who was nomiated by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) yesterday is elected as the 17th Lok Sabha Speaker. He is going to succeed 76-year-old Sumitra Mahajan — the 16th Lok Sabha Speaker who did not contest the elections this time. However, there is no official announcement yet. Om Birla’s wife congratulated him by saying this was a proud moment for the family. <keyword id="513880" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pinaki-Misra">Pinaki Misra</keyword>, the Biju Janata Dal’s parliamentary party leader in the Lok Sabha, said that his party, although not a member of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), had decided to support Birla. "The BJP, which has a clear majority in the Lok Sabha, has nominated Om Birla for the post of the Lok Sabha Speaker and sought our support for him. Since we have always had constructive cooperation with the Centre, we will support the proposal," said Mishra. The 57 year old Birla, was once a key leader of the Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha and reportedly has close ties with Amit Shah. He also played a significant role in BJP-led Ram Janmabhoomi movement in the 1990s. The decision to nominate Birla came soon after JP Nadda took the place as working BJP yuva president. Birla has worked closely with Nadda too. Om Birla worked as a Vice-President of BJP youth wing when Nadda was serving as the president of the same. Om Birla, who has been contesting as an MLA from Kota, kept winning from 2003 to 2014. He represented the Kota-Bundi Lok Sabha constituency. He<a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/om-birla-won-t-be-first-two-time-mp-to-be-elected-as-lok-sabha-speaker-1551010-2019-06-18"> reportedly</a> had a case registered against him in 2018 during his entire political career. He was accused of accumulating assets disproportionate to his income. The <keyword id="49015" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajasthan-High-Court">Rajasthan High Court</keyword> dismissed the case in 2019.

The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=National+Green+Tribunal">National Green Tribunal</a> has asked the Centre and Delhi governments to clarify their stand on capping and scrapping of <keyword id="6356109" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="diesel">diesel</keyword> cars. 
 
A bench led by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=National+Green+Tribunal">NGT </a>Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar issued notices to Ministries of Road Transport, Environment and Forests and Heavy Industries as well as Delhi government and others as they were all ears to pleas of <keyword id="74334" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="car-dealers">car dealers</keyword> asking for modifications to the ban. 
 
Senior advocate Pinaki Misra appeared for Delhi-based car dealers. He said the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=National+Green+Tribunal">NGT</a> has passed a ‘harsh’ direction. "We are saddled with stocks of 2015 which would be difficult to dispose in 2016 due the order passed by NGT," Misra said. 
 
He asked the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=National+Green+Tribunal">NGT</a> to modify the order so that existing stocks of diesel cars can be sold as year-end meant discounts, and high volume sale was expected. The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=National+Green+Tribunal">NGT</a>, however, said that a similar matter was scheduled for hearing in Supreme Court so it will not be proper for it to pass any directions. 
 
"If a similar matter is there in Supreme Court, it would be improper on our part to say anything," the bench said. 
 
"We have no doubts on the scheme. We observed certain things just because we want results out of it. Government is the final authority in the matter. It is for them to take a stand," it said. 
 
According to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=National+Green+Tribunal">NGT</a>, Diesel was the prime source of air pollution in Delhi. So alarming was the situation that people have been even advised to leave Delhi due to it’s adverse effects.

asks Govt. to ‘clarify’ stand

In a bid to strengthen its technology arm, <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> is looking to set up a base in the United States. This step will make it the first Indian consumer internet company to establish a presence the world’s biggest start-up hub. 
 
For this, Delhi-based online marketplace is also mulling to hire more specialists. 
 
However, the step is still at an exploratory stage and could see the company either set up its own office or acquire a small company in areas like mobile services and internet technology. 
 
"If we do acquire, it will be a company, with a small group of highly-talented people. I don't know yet what field it will be in, but we'll decide in course of time," Rohit Bansal, co-founder of Snapdeal, told Economic Times. 
 
Meanwhile, Bansal added that it won’t happen right now and the company would see what will it take to set up a base there. 
 
An IIT-Delhi graduate, Bansal, teamed up with schoolmate Kunal Bahl, to cofound Snapdeal in 2010. 
 Bansal is also mulling to hire key talent from <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword> in areas such as technology product management and design. 
 
"We are looking to bring people on board who have the experience to handle scale," Bansal told ET. Flipkart and Snapdeal have been aggressively poaching talent from Silicon Valley firms like <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> and Yahoo as they compete for top honours in a market where 
Amazon is a key contender. 
 
"They (online retailers) are spending as much on technology, as brick-and-mortar retailers are on real estate. Savings on real estate are being spent on technology," Pinaki Ranjan Misra, national head of retail &amp; consumer products practice at EY, told the financial daily. 
 
ET reported Snapdeal has been the fastest off the blocks in growing through acquisitions having also picked up luxury fashion portal Exclusively.in, social product discovery platform Doozton and gifting recommendation venture Wishpickr. 
 If Snapdeal does acquire a Silicon Valley-based company, the strategy would follow that of <keyword id="163405" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Alibaba-Group">Alibaba Group</keyword>, which is actively acquiring assets in the US.
