Which is why we went to someone who spends a good portion of his life on a plane for advice, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/klm-ceo-pieter-elbers-interview-2017-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KLM Royal Dutch Airlines CEO Pieter Elbers</a>.</p><p>Founded in 1919, KLM is the oldest airline in the world still operating under its original name. Elbers has been at the helm of the Dutch airline since 2014. </p><p>According to Elbers, who's on a flight to somewhere in the world a few times every month, having an organizational plan is key. </p><p>When asked if he uses any apps or high tech organizational aids, the KLM CEO jokingly replied, "<span style="font-weight: 400;">No, by the time I need an app to remember what I need to pack, I should be out of a job, right?"</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instead, he's worked out a system whereby everything he needs is always placed in the same spot in his suitcase. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Everything is in a fixed place. Everything is packed in the same way. I'm boarding an aircraft about every other week, so I want to make sure I don't forget anything," he told us in a recent interview.  "I need everything to be done in the very same way. I know where everything is packed, I know the sequence of packing it. So yes, I do it in the same very structured way."</span></p><h2>How to beat jetlag?</h2><p>Since the human body's internal clock can adjust no more than an hour and half a day, jetlag is almost inevitable on long trips. Since KLM's route network crisscrosses the globe, that means a lot of long trips for Elbers. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>KLM</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>So how does he deal with jetlag? An early morning run. </p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Well, beating jet lag for me is an early morning run. So, wherever I go, I wake up early, I do my run, and that's, for me, the way to beat the jet lag," he said. "Well, being in New York now it's - there's no better place to run in the morning than in Central Park. So that's what I do."</span></p><p>According to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/scientist-jet-lag-secrets-qantas-2017-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">University of Sydney's Professor Steve Simpson</a>, activity and exposure to sunlight are two good ways of combating the effects of jetlag. So Elbers' advice is actually backed by science. </p><h2><span style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Is Tuesday a good time a to buy tickets?</strong><br /></span><span style="font-weight: 400;"></span><span style="font-weight: 400;"></span><span style="font-weight: 400;"></span></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are many that believe, whether correctly or incorrectly, that Tuesday afternoons are the best time to buy plane tickets if you're looking for a good deal. Unfortunately, the KLM boss doesn't agree.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Well, it's definitely not Tuesday afternoon," Elbers said emphatically. "So, prices are changing all the time according to the season, according to the demand, according to the specific circumstances. So, I wouldn't be able to give you a sort of specific time of the year, time of the moment."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>KLM</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>"Obviously, outside the holiday period, it's - pricing is different than within the holiday period which is a bit similar I guess to hotels and all kinds of other businesses," he added. </span></p><h2><strong>How do I get upgraded on a KLM flight?</strong></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are few thing more prizing in air travel than scoring that free upgrade to a premium cabin. There have been countless advice columns on how to dress and what to say to close the deal with airline staff. But for Elbers, it's loyalty to KLM that matters most.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Well, sometimes we do have overbooking situations, and in that case, of course, we try to find our most loyal customers and try to reward them for their loyalty - even if they fly coach - to have them upgraded," he told us. Airline CEO reveals his favorite travel hack - and it makes perfect sense

It's venerable brand known for its service and iconic blue planes.</p><p>Since 2014, the Pieter Elbers has been the man tasked with leading the Dutch national airline into the future. Elbers joined KLM in 1992 as an aircraft loading supervisor before moving up the company's management ladder. Today, the charismatic 47-year-old leads an airline with 33,000 employees and $12 billion in annual revenue.</p><p>Recently, Elbers sat down with the Business Insider at our headquarters in New York. Our conversation touched upon several topics including the Air France-KLM union, competition in the marketplace, and <keyword id="6354692" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> tips.</p><h2>The state of Air France-KLM</h2><p>In 2004, KLM merged with Air France to form one of Europe's largest and most powerful aviation conglomerates with a fleet of more than 530 planes that carry more than 93 million passengers annually.</p><p>Due to the labor issues and the hyper-competitive nature of the Europe's commercial aviation industry, things have not always been easy for Air France-KLM. However, the company has recovered nicely, reporting a $1.2 billion through the first three quarters of this year.</p><p>"What I share with my staff is that we aren't following the book on consolidation, we are writing the book on consolidation," Elbers said. "And sure sometimes we have to make changes or reverse some earlier decisions, it's nice to play a role in it."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Benoit Tessier</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>According to Elbers, the interplay between the two airlines is constructive.</p><p>"In the past, we were probably very much that we should centralize a lot of activities in service to these two airlines," the KLM CEO told us. "In today's reality, for instance, in the field of digitalization, we prefer to do it in both Amsterdam and Paris."</p><p>"And then to make sure people challenge each other, help each other, share best practices, and share ideas," Elbers said. "We see a great momentum there in terms of if something is being done on the Air France side, the KLM guys know they can learn from that and try the same thing or even work to improve it."</p><h2>Competition in Europe and from abroad</h2><p>The most disruptive competitive force commercial aviation over the past few decades is low-cost airlines. However, major legacy carriers underestimated the effect power of these airlines until it was too late.</p><p>"My personal view is that for especially the first decade of their existence, network carriers like ourselves sort of underestimated, ignored - almost arrogantly ignored - the rise of low-cost carriers," Elbers said. "With that, we can see that their share in the European landscape has steadily increased and is now anywhere between 42% and 45% of all flights in Europe are with low-cost carriers. And a percentage which is significantly larger than in the US where it's about a third."</p><p>In response, KLM made drastic changes to the way it conducts business. </p><p>"With that, we have embarked on a program in KLM a few years ago whereby we sort of said, we're going to defend our European network and we're going to make sure that we do the right thing for our customers on the European network," he said.</p><p>"So we have lowered our cost, we have increased our fleet utilization, we have changed our commercial offers on probably 60% of all our European destinations, which are about 80 destinations. We do have levels which are matching the low-cost carriers. So this combination of cost-cutting on the one-hand side, investing in our product and our service."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>KLM</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>However, low-cost carriers aren't the only competitive threats to Air France-KLM. In countries such as China and Japan, high-speed rail has been taken a toll on domestic air travel. But that hasn't been a major issue for KLM.</p><p>"High-speed rail internationally in Europe is a very, very small number. Domestically in countries like France it is relevant, between various countries it's hardly relevant because of all of the different systems. It's not really taking traffic," Elbers said.</p><p>Things are different when it comes to the three Persian-Gulf mega-carriers, Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways. This been a major topic of contention for US and European carriers that allege the ME3 have been propped up by more than $50 billion in government subsidies.</p><p>"The fact that we have new competition is not an issue, but what the aviation community has been rather vocal about is to ensure that we have a level playing field and that we all play by the same rules," Elbers said. "I think it's very important also as a commitment to our staff. If we ask them to make sacrifices and to contribute to the change and the well-being of the company we should be able to do that while fighting on an even playing field."</p><p> </p><p> </p><h2>Tips for frequent flyers</h2><p><span>Elbers is a true frequent flyer. The KLM CEO is on a plane several times a month. As a result, he's worked out a few tricks to make air travel easier. For instance, Elbers stresses the need for organization when packing. </span></p><p><span>"Everything is in a fixed place. Everything is packed in the same way. I'm boarding an aircraft about every other week, so I want to make sure I don't forget anything," he said. "I need everything to be done in the very same way. I know where everything is packed, I know the sequence of packing it. So yes, I do it in the same very structured way."</span></p><p><span>"What I do is I have a special bag for sort of my running stuff and some of the non-business related items. And then I have a small carry-on luggage for business shirts, ties, and so-on," Elbers added. </span></p><p><span>And then there's jet lag. For Elbers, it's all about exercise to start the day.</span></p><p><span>"Beating jet lag for me is an early morning run," he said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Indian budget airline IndiGo says it's letting some female travelers avoid sitting next to men.</li><li>An online tool color-codes some of the seats, the airline's CEO, Pieter Elbers, said.</li></ul><p>The CEO of Indian budget airline IndiGo says a booking tool test that lets women avoid sitting next to men on flights is getting some positive responses on social media.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2024/07/30/indigo-ceo-on-decision-to-allow-women-to-choose-not-to-sit-next-to-men.html">In an interview with CNBC</a>, IndiGo chief Pieter Elbers said the test has "resounded very, very well" — though the airline is still looking into whether it has increased female travel.</p><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/08/07/indigo-allows-women-to-avoid-booking-seats-next-to-men-on-flights.html">According to CNBC</a>, the test kicked off in May across all IndiGo flights to make female passengers feel more comfortable.</p><p>To book a ticket, customers first select a gender. On a subsequent seat selection page, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/ssjoshssjosh/status/1795695816050680283">female travelers see</a> <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/khabri_lal/status/1795320547636867262">pink seats</a> to designate where other females are seated, according to CNBC.</p><p>The visuals are not available to male passengers, according to the outlet.</p><p>The tool did not appear when Business Insider tried to make a booking. IndiGo did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.</p><p>Elbers told CNBC that the test embodies the philosophy of 18-year-old IndiGo — which <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/indigo-launches-business-class-service-for-first-time-in-18-years/articleshow/112285550.cms">just launched business class service</a> for the first time — to be a "courteous and hassle-free service."</p><p>However, some social media users on X jeered the test for promoting a "<a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/Mumbaikar40/status/1795786722573205928">culture of segregation</a>." Others wondered how it would apply to passengers <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/nomadicoyster/status/1795754960426319996">with different gender identities</a>.</p><p>"I know this seemed bizarre to the western folks," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reddit.com/r/india/comments/1em2wsj/comment/lgw6enf/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button">one Redditor wrote</a>, "but I think people in this country would at least understand why this provision exists."</p><p>Female solo travelers face unique <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/safety-tips-from-female-solo-traveler-all-50-states">safety</a> <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-solo-travel-safety-tips-from-frequent-female-traveler-2023-11">concerns</a>. In a travel advisory, the US State Department urges all travelers not to go to India alone, "<a target="_blank" href="https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/india-travel-advisory.html">particularly if you are a woman</a>."</p><p>IndiGo <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.goindigo.in/about-us.html?linkNav=About%20us%7CCOMPANY%7CFooter">says</a> it's the largest airline in India, with 2,000 daily flights that connect more than 110 destinations. And if it's beer, it should be Dutch beer. So we have all that stuff for our customers, and yet at very competitive prices. How a top airline has responded to the surging popularity of budget airlines like Ryanair

<keyword id="19899187" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="InterGlobe-Aviation" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="InterGlobe Aviation" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="InterGlobe Aviation">InterGlobe Aviation</keyword>, the parent of the country's largest airline <keyword id="19899182" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IndiGo" source="keywords">IndiGo</keyword>, on Thursday reported more than doubling of profit after tax to Rs 1,894.8 crore in the three months ended March 2024. The airline had a profit after tax of Rs 919.2 crore in the year-ago period, according to a statement. <br /><br /> In the fourth quarter of the last financial year, total income jumped to Rs 18,505.1 crore from Rs 14,600.1 crore. <br /><br /> "FY24 has been a year of many remarkable achievements and milestones. For the full financial year 2024, we reported our highest ever total income of around 712 billion rupees (Rs 71,200 crore) with a net profit of around 82 billion rupees (Rs 8,200 crore) and a net profit margin of 11.9 per cent. The 4th quarter financial results were positive, making it all four quarters in FY24 profitable," IndiGo CEO <keyword id="20307450" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pieter-Elbers" source="keywords">Pieter Elbers</keyword> said. <br /><br /> He also said the strong execution of the company's strategy has yielded consistent results. <br /><br /> At the end of March, the airline had a fleet of 367 planes, including 13 on damp lease.

IndiGo Q4 profit jumps to Rs 1,895 crore; Strong execution of company strategy key, says CEO

Airline <keyword id="6354706" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="indigo" source="Orion">IndiGo</keyword> reported a <keyword id="6357392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="loss" source="Orion">loss</keyword> of Rs 3,818 million, excluding foreign exchange loss, for the quarter ending September 2022, compared to a loss of Rs 14,699 for the same quarter last year.<br /><br />Including the foreign exchange loss of Rs 12,015 million, the net loss for the September 2022 quarter aggregated to Rs 15,833 million.<br /><br />Total income for the quarter that ended September 2022 was Rs 128,523 million, an increase of 121.6 per cent over the same period last year. For the quarter, passenger ticket revenues were Rs 111,104 million, an increase of 135.6 per cent and ancillary revenues were Rs 12,872 million, an increase of 57.4 per cent compared to the same period last year.<br /><br />Company CEO, <keyword id="4490438" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pieter-elbers" source="Orion">Pieter Elbers</keyword> said: "This is the second consecutive quarter wherein we have operated at higher than pre-Covid capacity. In spite of a seasonally weak quarter, we witnessed relatively good yields with strong demand across the network. However, fuel prices and exchange rates have adversely impacted our financial performance."<br /><br />"We are on a steady path to recovery, benefiting from enormous opportunities both in domestic and international markets. With an industry challenged by global supply chain disruptions, we are working on various countermeasures to accommodate this strong demand. We have an unparalleled network presence enabling air travel to 74 domestic and 26 International destinations, we will continue to accelerate and build on this," he added.<br /><br />Total expenses for the quarter that ended September 2022 were Rs 144,356 million, an increase of 99.5 per cent over the same quarter last year.<br /><br />For the quarter that ended September 30, 2022, compared to the same period last year Indigo airline's capacity increased by 75 per cent and passenger numbers increased by 75.9 per cent to 19.7 million.<br /><br />"Overall, IndiGo has been recovering faster than the market, having operated two quarters at full capacity. Our capacity stands at 107 per cent in <keyword id="45394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q2" source="Orion">Q2</keyword> FY22-23 quarter, compared to Q3 FY19-20; while the industry capacity recovery is at 85 per cent as per the same comparison. This quarter the industry witnessed reduced traffic due to seasonality. While the industry witnessed a dip to 79 per cent of the passengers carried in Q2 FY22-23 quarter, compared to Q3 FY19-20, IndiGo carried 97 per cent of the passengers in Q2 FY22-23 quarter, compared to Q3 FY19-20," the airline said.<br /><br />As of September 30, IndiGo had a total cash balance of Rs 196,606 million comprising Rs 82,442 million of free cash and Rs 114,164 million of restricted cash. Indigo's Q2 net loss widens to ₹ 15,833 million, excluding forex loss

The land was purchased from the <keyword id="53" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kapoor" source="Orion">Kapoor</keyword> family, legal heirs of Raj Kapoor, the company said in a regulatory filing.<br />The deal value has not been disclosed.<br /><br />The site is located at Deonar Farm Road, Chembur, Mumbai, adjacent to <keyword id="6356045" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-institute-of-social-sciences" source="Orion">Tata Institute of Social Sciences</keyword> (TISS).<br /><br />In May 2019, Godrej Properties had acquired R K Studios in Chembur from the Kapoor family to develop a premium mixed-use project Godrej RKS.<br /><br />The project is expected to be delivered this year.<br /><br />Gaurav Pandey, MD and CEO, Godrej Properties, said, "We are pleased to add this iconic project to our portfolio and are grateful to the Kapoor family for entrusting us with this opportunity."<br /><br />The demand for premium developments has been strong over the past few years, he said.<br /><br />This project will allow us to further strengthen our presence in Chembur, Pandey said.<br /><br /><keyword id="1562" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="randhir-kapoor" source="Orion">Randhir Kapoor</keyword> said, "This residential property in Chembur has been of great emotional and historical significance to our family. Godrej Properties acquires Raj Kapoor's Bungalow in Mumbai

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Tony Fernandes, one of the most prolific names in Asian aviation, says "good leadership is to know when to go."</li><li>He doesn't care who replaces him as long as they're competent. </li></ul><p>Tony Fernandes, the CEO whose name is synonymous with AirAsia and cheap flights, is ready to move on.</p><p>In September 2001, Fernandes bought the AirAsia brand from a Malaysian government-owned conglomerate for the equivalent of <a href="https://simpleflying.com/airasia-history/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">30 cents at the time</a>. He went on to turn it into one of the most popular budget airlines in Asia — even offering fares as low as $3 and <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/airasia-bumper-sale-5-million-free-seats-up-for-grabs-till-25-september-11663634750653.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in some cases for free</a>.</p><p>At its peak, AirAsia was the fourth-largest airline in Asia, with more than 200 aircraft and 21,000 staff members across Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, <a href="https://newsroom.airasia.com/about-us#gsc.tab=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per its website.</a></p><p>But, after the COVID-19 pandemic, Fernandes says the airline's been through "the worst crisis of our life." The company's operations went bankrupt <a href="https://www.bangkokpost.com/business/2312818/thai-airasia-x-bankruptcy-filing-accepted-by-court#:~:text=TAAX%2C%20the%20long%2Dhaul%20low,a%20large%20amount%20of%20debt.">in Thailand</a> and <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Transportation/AirAsia-Japan-files-for-bankruptcy-leaving-23-000-flyers-without-refunds" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Japan</a>.</p><p>And he's ready to walk away: "Good leadership is to know when to go," <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-04-24/asia-s-low-cost-airline-kingpin-tony-fernandes-prepares-airasia-succession-plan">he told Bloomberg in an interview</a> published Tuesday.</p><p>"Honestly, I don't care where they are from," he told Bloomberg of his successor. "We don't really talk about race, religion, sex, sexual orientation — I don't care, as long as you can do the job."</p><p>Fernandes, 58, stepped down as the <a href="https://www.straitstimes.com/business/tony-fernandes-resigns-as-acting-group-ceo-of-airasia-x" target="_blank" rel="noopener">group CEO of the airline's long-haul unit AirAsia X in November</a> to focus on Capital A, <a href="https://newsroom.airasia.com/news/airasia-group-is-now-capital-a#gsc.tab=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a rebrand of the AirAsia Group</a> announced in January 2022.</p><p>And though he's already talking about plans to replace him, Fernandes doesn't know "exactly when I press the button." But he's talking about these succession plans as he wants to "attract the right leaders."</p><p>Fernandes is also noncommittal about where he may land next.</p><p>"I like private equity with an active management and helping young people change things," he told Bloomberg. "I believe there's a low-cost model for education and health. These are the two things that discriminate people the most."</p><p>Fernandes' impending exit isn't the only major leadership shakeup in the aviation industry. Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo appointed <a href="https://www.flightglobal.com/strategy/indias-airline-sector-undergoes-big-leadership-changes-/148738.article">Dutch-carrier KLM's Pieter Elbers to the top job</a> last year. Newly privatized carrier Air India appointed an executive of Scoot, the low-cost arm of Singapore Airlines, as CEO in June. There were also <a href="https://www.travelpulse.com/News/Airlines-Airports/Two-Major-US-Airlines-Announce-Leadership-Changes">airline executive reshuffling at American Airlines and Southwest Airlines</a> in December.</p><p>AirAsia did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.</p>
