Greater Noida, Feb 6 () Italian two-wheeler maker Piaggio on Thursday unveiled its premium scooter Aprilia SXR 160, which has been designed specifically for Indian conditions. Aprilia SXR 160 would be launched in the third quarter of 2020 and booking would commence in August. Piaggio, which is also working on India-specific futuristic electric mobility solutions, has also showcased the European version of Vespa Elettrica at the Auto Expo here. Stating that electric mobility will grow at a fast pace in the country, Piaggio Vehicles India Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Diego Graffi said, "India continues to remain a strategic market for us". "In the past few years, we have seen the changing preferences in Indian consumers. Aligned to these changes, we are proud to introduce new products, which cut across categories and fulfil the needs of the customer," he added. On being asked about electric mobility in India, he said the company has started with the commercials vehicles few month ago and plans to enter the market with customised products which are made in India. He further added: "It would be fully designed in-house by Piaggio, including powertrain." Piaggio said it would manufacture Aprilia SXR 160 at its Baramati facility in Maharashtra. The company also has plans to scale up its dealership network to expand business in the country, Graffi said. Piaggio unveils Aprilia SXR 160, plans India-specific electric mobility solutions

New Delhi, May 19 () Piaggio India on Tuesday said Vespa and Aprilia dealerships have resumed operations in Karnataka. The dealerships are now open in Bengaluru, Mysore, Belgaum, Mangalore, Bijapur, Davangere, Shimoga and Udupi, Piaggio India said in a statement. The opening of dealerships is being done in a staggered manner since few days, post receiving permission from the respective local authorities, it added. Piaggio India has already resumed manufacturing operations at its Baramati plant for the supply of Vespa and Aprilia scooters. "We have been working together with our dealers in navigating through the new reality and the opening of dealerships is a key step in that direction," Piaggio India Chairman and MD Diego Graffi said. Piaggio re-opens Vespa, Aprilia dealerships in Karnataka

Pune, Jan 23 () Italian auto maker Piaggio Vehicles' Indian arm on Thursday announced upgrading its entire three-wheeler range to new emission standards and also revealed the prices of the BSVI-compliant diesel three-wheelers.
With this, the company has become the first three-wheeler maker in the country to have upgraded its entire range to BSVI, it said.
The diesel range boasts of a completely new power pack with a 599 CC engine along with a 5-speed gear box and new aluminium clutch, Saju E S Nair, Piaggio Vehicles India Executive vice president for commercial business said at an event.
While the upgraded cargo range comes with a larger cabin, the passenger range comes with new safety doors for commuters.
The alternate fuel range has been fitted with one of the most refined drive-trains available in the industry with a 230CC 3-valve hi-tech engine, he said in a presentation.
"The new BS VI performance range reinforces the company's leadership in innovation and technology for providing solutions for last mile transportation. The 'Power Max' diesel range will enable our customers to earn more through better load carrying capability, faster turnaround time and improved maintenance intervals significantly reduce the cost for the customer," he said.
Similarly, the 'smart' alternative fuel range is a benchmark for superior pickup, NVH and urban driveability, he added.
The company also announced a price increase of Rs 45,000 and alternative fuel range by Rs 15,000 over the BSIV products.
With this showcase, Piaggio has one of the largest products range in the last mile mobility in India for both cargo and passenger carrying applications. 
"We are delighted to be the first 3-wheeler manufacturer in India to be completely BSVI ready with our entire range of products. Piaggio upgrades three-wheeler range to new emission norms

Mumbai, Apr 17 () Piaggio Vehicles India on Friday said it will set up an isolation centre in Baramati of Maharshtra, besides providing safety gears and installing sanitisation infrastructure at the government-run Sasoon Hospital in Pune as part of its multiple initiatives for the fight against COVID-19.Piaggio Vehicles Pvt Ltd (PVPL), which is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Italian auto major, Piaggio Group, has its manufacturing facility in Baramati district.For the safety of the health workers and to create awareness about how to fight against COVID-19, PVPL in association with an NGO is providing infrastructure support to Pune's Sassoon Government hospital. Under this initiative, PVPL is providing personal protective equipment (PPE) kits and installing sanitisation infrastructure at the hospital, the company said in a release.Besides, the company is also arranging free supplies of ration kits to nearly 1,000 migrant labourers in the Baramati MIDC area through the local administration and also to the migrants in the construction sector, to ensure basic food security for a month. The company is also closely working with the local government authorities of Baramati and supporting them to fight coronavirus pandemic, the release said adding PVPL is also setting up an isolation centre. The scooter is underpinned by a steel plate monocoque frame with aluminium parts including the rims, handlebar, side panels, and front mudguard that are accentuated by neo-retro character lines and the matte black colour. 
 
The metal parts have been produced using galvanic treatments and have a satin finish, and create an opaque effect in line with the finishing touches of the body. The scooter also comes with the words 'Emporio Armani' on the side, while the iconic eagle logo of the brand sits above the headlight. The feature line includes brown leather finishes including the floating seat and grips, full LED headlamp, tail light and indicators, as well as an LCD instrument cluster among others. 
 
The scooter is powered by a 125cc single-cylinder engine and it produces 11.72 bhp of power and 10.3Nm. the scooter works on an automatic transmission and will sport 220mm double disc brakes, dual-channel ABS and ASR (Anti-Slip Regulator) traction control.

 The Vespa Elettrica is a premium electric scooter that was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020. Piaggio, the company behind Vespa hasn’t launched the electric scooter in India yet - but said that it plans to do so, soon. The Vespa Elettrica is identical to the Bajaj Chetak in terms of design and features the same neo-retro look. It has a round headlamp, contrast colour air vents, a 4.3-inch digital instrument panel and smartphone connectivity. It is powered by a 4kW motor and has two riding modes – Power and Eco. The company has claimed that the scooter can be fully charged in 4 hours and a single charge will give a range of up to 100 km.  The Hero AE-29 was showcased during the Auto Expo 2020. It has a top speed of 55 kmph and can be charged in under four hours. As per the company, the scooter will have a range of 80 km on a single charge. The company has dubbed the AE-29 as the first IOT-enabled scooter.  Hero has showcased a unique three-wheeled scooter which is also known as a trike. The trike, dubbed as Hero Electric AE-3 will be the first such vehicle to be launched in India. The Hero Electric AE-3 is powered by a 5.5kW electric motor that gives it a top speed of 80 kmph. It is equipped with a 4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that can be fully charged in 5 hours and has a range of 100 km. Other features on the AE-3 include geofencing, real-time tracking, fully digital instrument cluster and reverse assist.  Evolet, a Gurugram-based start-up showcased the Raptor maxi scooter at the Auto Expo 2020. It is expected to go on sale in June this year. The company has not revealed any information about its price yet. The Evolet Raptor is powered by a 3kW motor which gives it a top speed of 100 kmph. The company has claimed that the scooter can be fully charged in 3-4 hours and it has a range of 100 – 150 km on a single charge. Commercial EV distribution start up Turno raises $13.8 million from B Capital & others

New Delhi, <keyword id="10387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> on Tuesday said that electric vehicles solutions firm <keyword id="4410318" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SUN-Mobility">SUN Mobility</keyword> is using its <keyword id="3228997" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Azure-cloud">Azure Cloud</keyword> as well as other solutions in developing Cloud-connected <keyword id="7747739" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swappable-batteries">swappable batteries</keyword> to put the country on the road to the future. The batteries as well as the swap stations are connected to the Cloud using Microsoft Azure and numerous built-in solutions like Azure IoT Hub, <keyword id="10435393" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="azure-data-factory">Azure Data Factory</keyword>, CosmosDB, Azure Databricks, among others, that transmit battery performance telemetrics back to SUN Mobility. The customers also have the option of using an app, which connects with their EV's battery and gives them real-time information of their battery's performance and the nearest swap station in case the battery is running low. "We have stations, batteries, and customers that are connected to us. There are over 150 data points coming into our system from each battery," said Chetan Maini, founder of Bengaluru-based startup SUN Mobility. With this data, SUN Mobility understands battery utilisation, most frequented routes, and peak hours. "Using AI and machine learning algorithms, it can predict the potential demand. It can not only optimise its existing network of battery swapping stations, but also plan the location and feasibility of future stations," Microsoft said in a blog post. So far, SUN Mobility has inked over 10 original equipment manufacturing (OEM) partnerships, that will enable automobile makers to use its battery technology. These include Piaggio Commercial, the Italian automobile manufacturer's Indian arm that makes autorickshaws and Ashok Leyland, India's second largest manufacturer of large commercial vehicles like buses and trucks. SUN Mobility currently has a network of 50 battery swapping stations spread across 14 cities, with plans to ramp it up to 150 stations in 20 cities by March 2021. It has already partnered with Indian Oil Company, India's largest oil and gas company, to deploy battery swap modules at their gas stations. "We always knew that the future would be on data, cloud, and analytics, and we had to rethink of how we would look at a platform and we felt that Microsoft was the kind of company we wanted to work with," said Maini who founded the Reva Electric Car Company way back in 1996. "It was talking of sustainability, looking at data at scale, talking of making an impact, and was creating platforms. All of that resonated with our long-term vision," he added. In his current role, Maini has taken a drastically different approach to powering EVs by applying the idea of shared economy to the battery ecosystem. He's come up with a pay-as-you-go battery as a service system that is run on a digital platform built on the Microsoft Cloud. "That means you don't have to wait for hours before your EV hits full charge". Ultimately, the distance your EV can travel is no longer limited by the amount of charge in one battery. "And because you don't buy the battery upfront, the cost of an EV can come down nearly 50%," Maini said, adding that if people are willing to rent homes and cars, "I figured they'd be open to renting the battery too". His company has also partnered with over a dozen companies that own fleets, including SmartE, India's largest EV fleet operator for last-mile connectivity in urban areas. "SUN Mobility's battery as a service model can have a big impact on public transportation vehicles, where every minute the vehicle is not on the road has revenue implications. And users are already seeing the gains," the blog post by Microsoft said. Bajaj, Hero, Honda and TVS announce discounts on BS4 vehicles

Outperforming other commercial vehicle segments in the country, the small commercial vehicle (SCV) industry in India witnessed a sale of 4,32,000 units, contributing a whopping 60% to the overall commercial vehicle industry in 2014. 
	 

	According to a study by Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, a global consultancy firm, in the next six years the segment is pegged to grow at 13% CAGR till FY 2020, thus constituting 80% of the total commercial vehicle industry in India. 
	 

	“OEMs in the SCV segment need to focus on creating the demand for SCVs by developing newer applications. They also need to understand their customers’ needs and liaise with government authorities in order to further promote SCV Passengers” said Dr. Wilfried Aulbur, managing partner at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants India. 
	 

	The Fair Game 
	 

	Currently, SCV segment is the fastest growing segment in the industry. The segment that came into existence in 2005 in India substantially grew at 30% CAGR in 2010-2012 but registered 1% decline in the last two years. It should be noted that the commercial vehicle industry shrunk by 11% CAGR due to economic downturn in the country. 
	 

	In the SCV segment, SCV Cargo vehicles category continues to remain the biggest segment and will account for over 80% of the total market in the next six years. The large pick-ups with a capacity of 2-3.5 ton constitute 54% of the SCV Cargo segment and have been growing rapidly. 
	 

	However, the passenger vehicle segment in SCV has been facing tough competition from three wheelers. “It faces tough competition from 3 wheelers that account for more than 85% of the passenger segment. Also, competition from Multi Purpose Vehicles (MPVs) and Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) for customers looking for comfort whereas soft top vehicles are more in demand for shared taxi applications. Over the last year, the segment has suffered extremely high delinquency rates,” stated the report. 
	 

	The Big Boys Tata Motors and Mahindra &amp; Mahindra (<keyword id="46869" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="MM">M&amp;M</keyword>) dominate the SCV category. While Tata Motors is the market leader through its sub 2T truck category and the SCV Passenger vehicles, <keyword id="46425" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anand-Mahindra">Anand Mahindra</keyword>’s M&amp;M is expected to dominate the 2-3.5 ton category because of its stronghold in the pick-up segment. “Tata reinforced its dominance in the &lt;2T (less than 2 ton) category by creating the Zip segment positioned between ACE ((Tata’s mini truck) and the three wheelers segment. On the other hand, M&amp;M has also managed to attract ACE customers to higher tonnage Bolero Maxi Truck. <keyword id="6357085" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ashok-Leyland">Ashok Leyland</keyword> is one of the late entrants but has been successful with Dost cornering 14% market share in the 2-3.5 Ton category”, the study revealed. In the 3 wheeler cargo segment, Piaggio continues to be the market leader with a market share of 52%. 
	 

	The Road Ahead 
	 

	According to the report, the SCV industry is expected to reach over 9 lakh units (in the next six years) growing at a CAGR of 13% over the next 6 years. The segment is expected to get back on the growth trajectory in the current fiscal year’s third quarter. 

	 
	Most of the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have considerable investment plans for India. Isuzu India, a leading global OEM in India plans to invest Rs 3,000 crore in its upcoming plant in Andhra Pradesh, which has a capacity of churning out 1 lakh units annually. Ashok Leyland and Nissan joint venture has made an investment of Rs 2,500 crore out of which 50% has already been spent. The plant is expected to have a capacity of 1.5 lakh units. 

	 
	Similarly, Tata Motors has an overall investment target of Rs 1,500 crore for the current fiscal year. The investment is being made for new product development and not additional capacity. M&amp;M too will invest Rs 250 crore in its AP plant for its SCV and passenger vehicle segments. Eicher in a joint venture with Polaris India is also expected to make a similar investment for its own SCV models. 
	 

	The question however is: will these investments bring in returns? They definitely would, if manufacturers would offer exclusive and unique experience to the consumers. 
	 
	In Aulbur’s words, “The future of the SCV segment depends significantly on the rise of unique applications of the vehicles. The OEMs could augment the current demand by continuously developing newer applications and educating the customers on the benefits of using SCVs. New applications are being developed to expand the market prompting newer customers to buy SCVs. Poultry, milk and water distribution industries are some of the new applications that have been witnessed over the last few years.”
