New Delhi, Jun 26 () Flipkart-owned PhonePe on Friday said it has partnered with ICICI Bank on UPI multi-bank model, giving its users the option to create and use multiple UPI IDs with ICICI and Yes Bank's handles. "PhonePe has partnered with ICICI Bank on UPI multi-bank model giving its users the option to create and use multiple UPI IDs with ICICI Bank's '@ibl' handle and YES Bank's '@ybl' handle on the PhonePe app," a statement said. This addition, in partnership with ICICI Bank, enables quick and contactless payments to over 200 million registered PhonePe users, the statement added. In March, PhonePe had suffered a service outage for nearly 24 hours that had started after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) placed Yes Bank on moratorium at that time. Its team had worked overnight with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and ICICI Bank to ensure all its services are up within a day. PhonePe, at that time, had said it was working on adding more payment service provider (PSP) partners to offer its users more options for UPI transactions, even as it continued to engage with Yes Bank. "At PhonePe, our effort has always been to give customers more choice while making their transaction experience seamless. Offering the '@ibl' handle to the users on our platform further solidifies PhonePe's already fruitful association with ICICI Bank," PhonePe Vice-President (Financial Services and Payments) Hemant Gala said on Friday. With customers now being able to choose between multiple handles for their UPI IDs, PhonePe has achieved another key milestone in its journey towards making payments easy, secure and accessible to all, he added. Bijith Bhaskar, head (digital channels and partnership) at ICICI Bank, said that with an increase in adoption of digital payments, ICICI Bank is partnering with PhonePe for extending UPI services. "We believe that with this partnership, both ICICI Bank and PhonePe would be able to capitalise on their immense domain strengths for empowering customers to a seamless and simple digital payment experience," he added. Leading fintech platform PhonePe on Wednesday announced it has enabled <keyword id="6358921" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="upi" source="Orion">UPI</keyword> activation using Aadhaar-based OTP authentication. PhonePe is the first UPI Third Party Application Provider (TPAP) App to roll out the Aadhaar-based UPI onboarding flow that will now enable several crore Indians to become a part of the UPI ecosystem, seamlessly and securely for the first time, the company said in a statement. Under the previous UPI onboarding flow, a valid debit card was mandatory to set up a user's <keyword id="4760578" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="upi-pin" source="Orion">UPI PIN</keyword> during the UPI registration process, restricting access for a large number of Indian bank account holders who didn't have a debit card handy. The addition of <keyword id="144117" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="aadhaar" source="Orion">Aadhaar</keyword> onboarding for UPI will do away with this restriction, and allow previously under-served populations to experience the convenience and benefits of digital payments. "We are excited to be the first fintech platform to offer Aadhaar-based authentication for our users, making the UPI onboarding flows even more simple and inclusive. They will then receive an OTP from UIDAI, and their respective bank to complete the authentication process. Post this, customers will be able to access all UPI features such as payments and balance checks on the PhonePe App. "This will help expand the overall UPI ecosystem, and also onboard new customers to the digital payments fold. UPI has become a global exemplar, and countries across the world are looking to implement it. Going forward, we are closely working with NPCI to take UPI international," said Agrawal. With 41.5 crore registered users, one in four Indians is now on PhonePe. Google Pay has been a more consumer app, while PhonePe has been both. Ultimately, how much P2P payment will happen, what drives payments is commerce,” Shishir Mankad, head of financial services, Praxis Global Alliance told Business Insider. Narendra Yadav, Vice President, Paytm told Business Insider that P2M transactions are 70% of Paytm’s overall transactions, whereas for UPI overall that share is around 40%. But Yadav also said that the company’s dominance in merchants is not yet completely visible in UPI. “Our focus has been on merchants – online or offline. Whenever merchant transactions are increasing, Paytm will benefit. And after COVID-19, merchants have been moving to digital transactions where Paytm is also seeing huge growth,” he said. However, Gupta believes that when compared to the likes of Google Pay the reasons are beyond the company. “The reason lies with banks and not Google Pay. Paytm has an advantage because it's a payments bank, so it controls the entire stack which basically means a lower failure rate. Having said that Google Pay works with three or four major banks and failure rates aren’t just dependent on banks but also NPCI’s UPI stack,” Arnav Gupta, analyst at Forrester told Business Insider. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Adopting new users in UPI" comment="subhead" text="Adopting new users in UPI">Adopting new users in UPI</cmsannotation> The acceleration in UPI also means new users and new payers being added to the ecosystem. Transactional volumes are always increasing, and with that the average transaction ticket size is also increasing. Digital adoption by the consumers is on the higher side especially due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of new users and new payers were added to the ecosystem,” said Gupta. The Vijay Shekhar Sharma-led company had recently said that it processes 1.2 billion transactions in a month. In January 2021, Walmart-owned PhonePe had said it processes over a billion monthly transactions. “PhonePe now has more than 275 million lifetime registered users, which essentially means that one in every five Indians now has PhonePe. Our monthly transaction count is up nearly 100% year-over-year. Our monthly active users (MAU) has crossed 110 million monthly users with a very healthy 97% monthly customer repeat rate. Even in terms of monetary value, our annualised total payment volume (TPV) run rate has crossed the $300 billion mark,” PhonePe’s chief executive Sameer Nigam had said during Walmart’s fourth quarter earnings. Meanwhile, Paytm knows it has a long way to go in the UPI ecosystem. The $16 billion startup has also announced, on Monday, that its UPI handles have been approved by India stock regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India for users to pay for IPOs. And this is just one of the tricks that Paytm is using to leverage its other businesses. “Paytm has many businesses, and if they put their might behind this it will surely yield results. While in UPI, Paytm is a distant third, if you look at Paytm wallet to wallet transactions that’s very large but doesn’t get recorded as it doesn’t enter any settlement,” said Mankad. Paytm is betting big on UPI and though it’s still a distant third, analysts believe it could have an edge over PhonePe and Google Pay

New Delhi, Mar 8 () Digital payments platform PhonePe on Sunday said its transactions and user traffic have bounced back to normal, after being affected for 24 hours due to restrictions on Yes Bank. Over 25 million customers used the PhonePe app on Saturday showing their trust in the platform, according to a statement by the company. The digital payments platform has bounced back hard in the past 24 hours. The platform processed over Rs 4,000 crore worth of transactions in 24 hours and saw its largest-ever volume of user traffic in a single day (with over 70 million app sessions), it said. PhonePe saw a service outage for nearly 24 hours, which started immediately after the RBI placed Yes Bank on moratorium on March 5. The PhonePe team worked overnight with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and new UPI partner ICICI bank to ensure all its services are up within a day, the company said. All merchant payment settlements were restored by Friday noon and all consumer wallet, credit and debit card payments were restored by 3 pm. All UPI services were restored by Friday night, with PhonePe users continuing to use their UPI @ybl handles. This ensured that there was a seamless transition for all of its 20 crore customers, it added. Sameer Nigam, founder and CEO of PhonePe, said, "Friday was an extraordinarily difficult situation with little precedence. We are grateful to RBI, NPCI, Yes Bank and ICICI for working collectively to ensure that millions of our customers and merchants were not inconvenienced a minute longer than necessary." The outage on the PhonePe platform also led to playful banter between the company and its bigger rival Paytm. "Inviting you to @PaytmBank #UPI platform. It already has huge adoption and can seamlessly scale manifold to handle your business. Let's get you back up, fast!," Paytm Payments Bank tweeted on Friday. What is UPI and how does it work?

Decacorn fintech firm <keyword id="6357886" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="phonepe" source="Orion">PhonePe</keyword> has received an additional USD 100 million from <keyword id="6375561" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="general-atlantic" source="Orion">General Atlantic</keyword> during its ongoing fundraise round of USD 1 billion at a pre-money valuation of USD 12 billion, the company said on Wednesday. With this fresh funding, the <keyword id="80487" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="walmart" source="Orion">Walmart</keyword> group firm has raised USD 750 million till date. "PhonePe confirms a USD 100 million additional tranche of investment from General <keyword id="44121" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="atlantic" source="Orion">Atlantic</keyword>, a leading global growth equity firm, and its co-investors as part of our ongoing fundraise. General Atlantic initially invested USD 350 million in PhonePe in January 2023," PhonePe said in a statement. General Atlantic has invested USD 450 million in the ongoing fundraise, Ribbit Capital, <keyword id="526777" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tiger-global" source="Orion">Tiger Global</keyword> and TVS Capital Funds USD 100 million and Walmart has infused USD 200 million in the company. PhonePe plans to deploy these funds to build and scale new businesses like insurance, wealth management, lending, stockbroking, ONDC-based shopping and account aggregators. The fundraise will also help PhonePe turbo-charge the next wave of growth for UPI payments in India, including UPI lite and Credit on UPI. PhonePe gets additional USD 100 million fund from General Atlantic

New Delhi, Mar 29 () After Paytm, Flipkart-owned PhonePe has launched a donation drive and said it aims to contribute up to Rs 100 crore to PM CARES Fund towards fighting coronavirus crisis.PhonePe said it will contribute Rs 10 for every user, who donates to the PM CARES Fund via the PhonePe App using UPI by April 30, 2020."In total, PhonePe has pledged to contribute a maximum of up to Rs 100 crore," a statement said.Paytm had on Saturday said it aims to contribute Rs 500 crore to PM CARES (Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund), and will contribute up to Rs 10 for every contribution or any other payment made on Paytm using the wallet, UPI and Paytm Bank debit card.Sameer Nigam, founder and CEO of PhonePe, said the 100 crore pledge is an attempt to lift the mood of the country in this period of crisis."We are asking every Indian to unite together and donate, even if it's just Re 1, to the PM CARES Fund.
