Well, that may be true. But on the internet nobody knows you're a Jew, either, unless you announce it. And while writing this book, for the first time in my life, I spent a whole lot of time, a full year, not telling people I was a Jew, and listening to what they said when I didn't.<div type="image" title="CultureWarlords_HC" height="2775" width="1838" msid="78642458" hostid="261"></div>In order to look as deeply as I could into the world of white nationalism, I had to leave my own identity behind as often as not. In real life, I'm a schlubby, bisexual Jew, living in Brooklyn, with long brown ratty curls, the matronly figure of a mother in a Philip Roth novel, and brassy personal <keyword id="6358883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="politics">politics</keyword> that aren't particularly sectarian but fall considerably to the left of Medicare for All. Over the course of writing this book, I had to leave my own skin. And sometimes what I found made me want to never return to it.Here are a few things I did over the course of working on this book.<h2>I fabricated. A lot. Spectacularly.</h2>I invented identities from whole cloth purely because I needed to enter communities where my real self — Jewish, a journalist, a well-known fascism-hating Twitter loudmouth — was extremely unwelcome. And so I had to become other people, and invent them as I went along.I pretended to be a slender, petite blond huntress who'd grown up on a white-nationalist compound in Iowa, looking for suitors on a whites-only dating site.I pretended to be a down-and-out warehouse worker in Morgantown, West Virginia, who had become suicidal after his wife left him, only to be restored to his full self by becoming part of the white-nationalist movement — and willing to do anything to support his brothers in the cause.I pretended to be an incel — an "involuntarily celibate" virgin, radicalized into a deep hatred of women by his lack of sexual success.I infiltrated a Europe-based, neo-Nazi terror propaganda cell, called the Vorherrschaft (Supremacy) Division, by pretending to be a sexy young woman with an interest in saving the white race through violence, with the screen name "Aryan Queen." I silently observed as <keyword id="552944" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="neo-Nazis">neo-Nazis</keyword> mused about what raping me would be like.<h2>And, as myself, I went to dark places; I spoke to bad people and good people on the front lines of the battle for America.</h2>As myself, I attended a conference for alt-right YouTubers in Philadelphia and was chased out of a casino. I spoke to everyday antifascists defending their community in Charlottesville, Virginia. I was rejected from joining a white-supremacist pagan ritual in the Albany area by the elders of a weight-lifting pagan cult called Operation Werewolf. I listened to a terrible white-nationalist freestyle-rap diss battle. I watched neo-Nazis post photos of trans children and Jewish children and black children and talk about killing them.<h2>Every day for nearly a year, I immersed myself in chat groups and websites and forums where photos of lynchings were passed around like funny memes.</h2>Where "KILL JEWS" was a slogan and murderers were called "saints." On the anniversary of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, I watched them celebrate Robert Bowers, the murderer of eleven Jews at prayer, like a hero and a friend. I listened to strangers talk about killing k---s every day. I listened to strangers incite violence and praise murder and talk about washing the world with blood to make it white and pure. I listened to their podcasts. I watched their videos. I listened to their terrible music and watched them plan to meet and celebrate the racism that was their raison d'être.<h2>And something snapped in me. </h2>I admit it: I started this book angry at the racist right. I set out with the idea of writing a profane but intellectual, impassioned but clear book to spell out just exactly who these people are and what they want to do. Before I started writing, I was already the top Google search result for "greasy fat k--e," thanks to neo-Nazi website the Daily Stormer.A hate group called Patriot Front had already sent my parents a postcard with the Nazi-era slogan "Blood and Soil." I had already had my relatives' names published on Gab, a white-supremacist-friendly social media site used by alleged Pittsburgh synagogue shooter Robert Bowers.<h2>I thought I was ready for what researching this book would do to me. I wasn't.</h2>As I write this now, I feel myself incandescent with the kind of anger that doesn't just last an evening. It's an old cliché that lovers shouldn't go to bed angry; well, for the past year I have gone to bed with my anger and woken up with my anger and gone about my day with my anger hot and wet like blood in my mouth.It's not that I discovered that members of the racist far right are inhuman, or monsters beyond comprehension. They're not some entirely new species of being that requires forensic analysis and the dispassionate gaze of the scientist. They're not uniquely stupid or uniquely mired in poverty or uniquely beset by social problems or even members of any specific socioeconomic class. They're not monsters.<h2>They're people.</h2>Just people, mostly men and some women, all over this country and this world, who have chosen to hate, to base the meaning of their lives on hate, to base their communities of solidarity on hate, to cultivate their hate with tender, daily attention.They are just people, people with an entire alternate curriculum of history, who operate within an insular world of propaganda, built to stoke rage and incite killings and for no other purpose at all. There are rich men and poor men, tradesmen and office workers, teenagers and men cresting middle age. They eat and sleep and sometimes drink too much and sometimes are sober. They're lonely, some of them; horny, some of them; sometimes depressed and sometimes confused and sometimes joyful.<h2>They're people, just like you and me.</h2>They could work in the next cubicle over and you might not know it; sit one seat over in class from you and you might not know it; live in your neighborhood, play on your sports team, and you would never know that deep in the night they trade photos of lynchings like baseball cards, and laugh.<h2>But I know them now, these men and women.</h2>I've seen what they write and how they talk and what they read and even how they sing. (Poorly.) It is precisely their humanity that angers me so much: The hate they promulgate and the violence they desire are the culmination of dozens or hundreds of small human choices. They choose, every day and every day more of them, to create alternate identities that embrace the swastika and the skull mask and the Totenkopf, the worst of history and the worst of the present melding seamlessly.They choose to dream not of peace or of equality or of anything better than the sorry ragged world as it is, but of a worse world, riven by terror, awash in the blood of those they consider subhuman. Which means anyone not white; which means anybody Jewish; which means anyone who fights back against their putrid cancer of an ideology. Their dialogue is unremittingly puerile and violent.Everything about them goes back again and again to violence, as a hummingbird to nectar; it is what they crave, it fills them with a fleeting sense of virility and meaning. The fear they can instill makes them feel powerful; the murderers they celebrate are their brothers in arms.And I admit that as I researched this book and wrote it, the anger I felt calcified into a parallel hatred — one based not on skin color but on the sheer accumulation of vitriol I consumed and the way people I'd never met spoke about killing people who look just like my nieces and nephews, my cousins and aunts, my lovers, my friends, me. But he doesn't lash out against thieves the way most people would.
Kaplan is best known for creating Fucked Company in the early 2000s. But he also runs a website, <a href="http://distrokid.com/">DistroKid</a>, that helps musicians get their songs on iTunes, Spotify and other outlets. Musicians are supposed to pay $19.99 for an annual account but they can get a free account if they refer five friends to the site.
Kaplan says it's easy to tell when people fake their referrals and nab undeserved, free access to DistroKid. But up until now, he has turned a blind eye.
"We let them get away with it because I love seeing people use the system, whether they've paid for it or not," <a href="https://medium.com/product-design/416b0841dbf1">Kaplan writes on Medium</a>. "It's one of the most complex things I've ever built and I'm really proud of it."
A video of a police officer showing kindness to a thief inspired Kaplan's admirable reaction. When a Florida cop caught a woman shoplifting and found out it was because she couldn't feed her family, the cop bought her groceries instead of arresting her.
Now, Kaplan's team has created a way to call thieves out and challenge them to do what's right.
"When the system detects that you've just created 5 bogus referrals, you'll be presented with a notice that we caught you, but here's an option: Either pay the $19.99/yr, or sign up for a free Scholarship account if you can't afford it," he writes.

The main argument against the third year is that it's filled with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/scalia-calls-legal-education-a-failure-2013-3">the kind of electives</a> that Justice Antonin Scalia has attacked so ferociously. Since law school already costs as much as <a href="http://web.law.columbia.edu/admissions/graduate-legal-studies/tuition-fees-and-financial-aid">$50,000 a year</a>, why spend an entire year on classes that are interesting but not necessary?
Obama's suggestion about slashing the third year of law school came in the midst of an ongoing debate about how America can make education more affordable. He graduated from law school in 1991 and only <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/OTUS/obama-paid-off-student-loans-years-ago/story?id=16204817">finished paying off his student loans</a> in about 2004. Obama also <a href="http://www.factcheck.org/2008/03/obama-a-constitutional-law-professor/">taught constitutional law</a> at the University of Chicago. Presumably, the man knows what he's talking about.
In fact, many law students seem to agree: A <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/kaplan-survey-on-the-third-year-of-law-school-2013-9">recent Kaplan Bar Review survey</a> found that 63% of recent grads thought the third year of law school was useless.
However, many people argue that the third year is necessary since it gives students practical clinical experiences. (A huge criticism of law school is that graduates emerge with a lot of theoretical knowledge of the law but little understanding of <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/20/business/after-law-school-associates-learn-to-be-lawyers.html?pagewanted=all">how to actually practice the law</a>.)
Obama's suggestion that schools cut the third year has "surface appeal," Georgetown Law professor Philip Schrag <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/03/opinion/should-the-third-year-of-law-school-be-cut.html">acknowledged in a letter to The New York Times</a>. But if the third year goes, he said, students would only get to take "basic survey courses." From his letter:
Small seminars to teach research and writing would vanish. Education in ethics would be threatened. Clinical education, which best prepares students for the real practice of law, is expensive because of its hands-on approach. It is taught mainly in the third year, and it might be the first to go.
Instead of doing away with the third year entirely, some people say that the solution is for law schools to reform the last year. 
One recent New York Times op-ed argued that law students <a href="http://mobile.nytimes.com/2013/01/18/opinion/practicing-law-should-not-mean-living-in-bankruptcy.html">should be able to take the bar exam</a> after two years. That way schools would have to "earn the third year," Northwestern University law dean Daniel B. Rodriguez and NYU law professor Samuel Estreicher wrote in The Times. That way, they argued, students would only stay for the third year if it offered them the kind of practical education that would actually help them be better lawyers.
"With this reform," they argued, "law schools would have an obvious financial incentive to design creative curriculums that law students would want to pursue - a third-year program of advanced training that would allow those who wished it to become more effective litigators, specialize or better prepare for the real-world legal challenges that lie ahead."

Duterte disagrees. And generally when he disagrees with something, there is violence.That said, Duterte's rhetoric on this matter has been as erratic as it has been bombastic (you can apply that to much of his policy dictums). At one point on the campaign trail he said that he would ride a jet ski to the disputed Spratly Islands and plant the Philippine flag there. </div></div>ISIS's state-building mission is one of the primary points of departure from its jihadist predecessors.
There are no shortage of Islamist militant groups that have held on to land and reconstituted themselves as a government: the Taliban regime ruled over Afghanistan before the US invasion; Hamas has held the Gaza Strip since 2007. 
But ISIS's primary enterprise is the Islamic State itself: a discrete political unit aimed at overthrowing existing governments and ushering in a religiously pure utopia.
This puts humanitarian aid groups in a serious bind. Every state must provide some degree of services for its citizens, or at least pretend to. And however warped and bigoted ISIS's concept of "citizenship" may be the group understands that its legitimacy and ideological appeal is connected to its ability to at least behave like a state.
So there is a jarring convergence of interests for ISIS and humanitarian groups. They both want to help people in need - but for morally divergent reasons, to put it mildly.&#xa0;
At Vox, <a href="http://www.vox.com/2015/2/2/7966421/vaccination-isis">Max Fisher notes</a> that ISIS has allowed aid groups to carry out polio vaccinations in territory it controls. Fisher explains ISIS's "pro-vaccine stance" and says that despite the group's violence excesses, "even ISIS sees the value of immunizing children against contagious diseases." 
But it's likelier that ISIS sees strategic value in exercising any kind of state-like power. And as&#xa0;<a href="http://www.odi.org/sites/odi.org.uk/files/odi-assets/publications-opinion-files/9390.pdf">an eye-opening December, 2014 report</a>&#xa0;from the <a href="http://www.odi.org/programmes/humanitarian-policy-group">Humanitarian Policy Group</a> and the <a href="http://www.irinnews.org/">Integrated Regional Information Networks</a> (IRIN) demonstrates,&#xa0;ISIS has decided that aid advances its state-building project and deepens the group's control over the estimated 3.6 million people living under the "Caliphate."

As the report explains, ISIS imposes strict conditions on aid groups that operate in its territory with the aim of co-opting their services.&#xa0;
"IS representatives are directly involved in - or claiming&#xa0;credit for - aid distributions," the report states. The report quotes the "head of a local NGO" in Tikrit who says that ISIS won't distribute aid if it's labeled with the emblem of the group providing it. "If they saw these labels, they wouldn't let it in and they give our volunteers trouble&#xa0;and they forbid the distribution of those items to the&#xa0;people," he says.
This restriction enables ISIS to take credit for the aid it receives. The group has even incorporated aid into its official propoganda: "Using its slick media division Al Hayat, IS shares videos depicting distributions of food and other support services, including medical supplies." The group holds organized food distributions with some bags in the videos carrying the branding of the "IS Department of Relief."

Naturally,&#xa0;IRIN couldn't find any instances of people actually "receiving any&#xa0;support from the 'IS Department of Relief.'"&#xa0;But they did find evidence that ISIS is "stealing from people in areas it controlled," and the report quoted one aid worker who claimed that ISIS taxed trucks of humanitarian aid. &#xa0;
Overall, the report concludes that ISIS is "not automatically opposed to working with humanitarian&#xa0;actors - as long as certain terms are agreed, such as&#xa0;no labeling and no <keyword id="6356001" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="international">international</keyword> staff members, and assistance serves the group's wider aims." 
The jihadist group is "capitalizing on its role as&#xa0;a conduit for aid distributions to project the image of a&#xa0;group that is not only engaged in an armed struggle but&#xa0;also providing for people living under its control."

War presents a range of moral dilemmas for humanitarians: In the absence of formal state control, it's the actors who create the gravest organized threat to people's safety that exert the most influence over how and where aid is distributed.
So there are numerous examples of aid becoming an active and perhaps negative factor in how conflicts unfold.&#xa0;As Robert Kaplan recounts in his book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Surrender-Starve-Travels-Ethiopia-Somalia/dp/1400034523">Surrender or Starve</a>,&#xa0;the communist regime of Mengistu Haile Mariam used the international response to the 1980s famine in Ethiopia to distract from his almost unimaginably brutal counter-insurgency campaigns in Tigray and Eritrea. 
The New Yorker's Philip Gourevitch <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2010/10/11/alms-dealers">has argued</a> that humanitarian neutrality in the Democratic Republic of Congo after the 1994 Rwandan genocide turned refugee camps in the country into safe-havens for the genocide's perpetrators. And in Gaza, the UN provides <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gaza-is-cut-off-from-the-world-2014-12">$238 million</a> in annual humanitarian funding, underwriting vital public services like garbage collection and education in a territory controlled by Hamas, a US-listed terrorist organization.
The report's authors close by expounding on the importance of opening lines of dialogue with ISIS in order to facilitate effective and non-morally hazardous aid delivery. 
But it admits that ISIS has a lot to gain from cooperating with aid groups and concludes that present-day Iraq and Syria present yet another instance where helping people has the potential to make things worse: "Although duty-bound to deliver aid impartially, based&#xa0;on need," the report states, "there is a very real fear that working with IS&#xa0;will inadvertently benefit the group materially, confer on&#xa0;it undue legitimacy in the eyes of the Iraqi people and &#xa0;prolong the conflict and suffering."
The report doesn't intend this to be an argument for simply halting aid deliveries inside of ISIS territory. But the key to delivering aid to areas ISIS controls is understanding that the jihadists don't allow humanitarian groups to operate because they embrace those groups' missions. They're in it to help advance the objectives of the Islamic State, which are the diametric opposite of humanitarianism.
There's no easy way out of this dilemma. Cutting off aid ensures additional starvation and disease. Continuing aid might empower a group that massacres religious minorities and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/isis-says-it-executed-a-captured-jordanian-pilot-by-burning-him-alive-2015-2">burns its prisoners alive</a>. 
And it's the perhaps unenviable responsibility of aid groups to figure out how to immunize children and deliver much-needed food and medicine without empowering one of the most brutal terrorist groups on earth.

DOES APPLE WANT TO BE IN THE GYM, OR IN HOSPITALS? Apple Analyst Philip Elmer-DeWitt has an interesting take on where the real opportunity might lie in the future for any Apple iWatch, which is what the tech press has imagined any new wrist-worn Apple gadget will be called. It may be that the real opportunity for disruption isn't in fitness, but in health care, he argues. Advanced in heart rate, blood pressure, and hydration sensors would make any new wearable device a possible sensor-loaded personal health monitor, and possibly lead to health care savings thanks to its role in boosting preventive care. WILL THE REAL PAPER PLEASE STAND UP? New York-based app development company FiftyThree has asked Facebook to change the name of its new mobile news reading app, Paper. Facebook's Paper app - essentially a new version of the News Feed - was launched Jan. 30. FiftyThree's app of the same name has existed for two years and turns iPads into digital sketchbooks, perfect for drawing mind maps, doodles, or back-of-the-napkin diagrams. FiftyThree's app is a favorite of tech writers, and won Apple's iPad App Of The Year 2012 distinction. With Facebook's scale and marketing prowess, the name confusion may crowd FiftyThree's Paper app out of top app charts and app store search engine results. Perhaps most ironically, FiftyThree's Paper app is a Facebook partner, since the app's sketches, or "ideas," as they're called, can be shared on Facebook, and 500,000 have been shared to date. SO IS FACEBOOK'S PAPER APP ANY GOOD?: The app, which is the brainchild of Facebook's Creative Labs team, has in fact been receiving rave reviews for its design, and user experience. Because the app is not heavily branded as a Facebook product, it seems less like an effort to make Facebook itself more relevant to users, and more like an opportunity for Facebook's most innovative engineers and designers to create a powerful new product incorporating much of what they've learned as they've watched the News Feed develop. Business Insider's Jim Edwards has described it as a "massive redesign" of Facebook itself, and said it is "excellent." It will be interesting to see whether any of the insights gained from Paper will ultimately feed back into how Facebook thinks about and organizes its marquee News Feed. THE BENEFITS OF THE SHARK TANK: "I never would have imagined the impact that 'Shark Tank' had on the downloads and the website." Those are the words of app developer Bruno François, whose video app Cycloramic leapt to number one in Apple's App Store his appearance on American reality TV show, Shark Tank, in which budding entrepreneurs pitch well-known venture capitalists and investors. Business Insider's Alison Griswold has the story, including an estimate for how much the appearance netted him in download revenue: $200,000. More than twice the $90,000 he was asking for from Shark Tank's panel of investors. MOBILE GEOMARKETING GETS A DEDICATED NEWS SITE: An item of interest to all local-mobile types: David Kaplan, an experienced writer for paidContent and more recently ad tech news site AdExchanger has been hired by cloud-powered and multi-device location marketing company Yext to edit a new media property called GeoMarketing. The site will function as the media arm of Yext, according to Capital New York. Recently, MediaPost had a <a href="http://www.mediapost.com/publications/article/217388/citibank-taps-yext-for-real-time-updates-across-we.html" target="_blank">story</a> on how Citibank uses Yext to push local information to its customers. GRAPH SEARCH ON MOBILE: Facebook's last ballyhooed desktop-first new feature is now being tested on Facebook's mobile apps. Graph Search is essentially a search engine for Facebook, that allows you to search your connections and their posts for certain pieces of information, such as "What restaurants in New York do my friends like?", or "What are my friends' favorite clothing brands?" The search function has obvious marketing applications, since such searches would provide great opportunities for highly targeted advertisements. But Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has admitted that users haven't flocked to Graph Search. (<a href="http://mashable.com/2014/02/03/facebook-graph-search-mobile/">Mashable</a>)
