Pervez Musharraf: Facts about India-born former Pakistan president

<keyword id="3001" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pakistan" source="Orion">Pakistan</keyword>'s former military ruler General (retd.) <keyword id="44240" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pervez-musharraf" source="Orion">Pervez Musharraf</keyword>, the architect of the Kargil War in 1999, died on Sunday in Dubai after a prolonged illness, according to media reports. <keyword id="17431" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="musharraf" source="Orion">Musharraf</keyword>, 79, was suffering from amyloidosis, a rare disease caused by a build-up of an abnormal protein called amyloid in organs and tissues throughout the body, according to his family. General (retd) Musharraf died at a hospital in Dubai, Geo News quoted his family as saying. He had been undergoing treatment at the American Hospital Dubai, the channel reported. The Express Tribune newspaper also said that Musharraf, who had been living in Dubai since 2016, breathed his last on Sunday, The general was the main architect of the Kargil War that took place months after then Prime Minister <keyword id="6576" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nawaz-sharif" source="Orion">Nawaz Sharif</keyword> signed a historic peace accord with his Indian counterpart Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Lahore. After his failed misadventure in Kargil, Musharraf deposed the then Prime Minister Sharif in a bloodless coup in 1999 and ruled Pakistan from 1999 to 2008 in various positions – first as the chief executive of Pakistan and later as the President. In March 2014, Musharraf was indicted for suspending the Constitution on November 3, 2007. In December 2019, a special court handed Musharraf a death sentence in the high treason case against him. The former military ruler left the country in March 2016 for Dubai to seek medical treatment. Musharraf was born on August 11, 1943 in Delhi. His family moved from New Delhi to Karachi in 1947. He joined the <keyword id="37837" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pakistan-army" source="Orion">Pakistan Army</keyword> in 1964 and was a graduate of the Army Staff and Command College, Quetta.

But now, Khan is altering the stance of the former government which was then led by <keyword id="44240" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pervez-Musharraf">Pervez Musharraf</keyword>. “It was ISI that gave the information which led to the location of Osama bin Laden,” said Imran Khan. The statement broke during <a href="https://video.foxnews.com/v/6062830280001/#sp=show-clips">Khan’s interview with Fox News</a> where he was asked if Pakistan would keep or release the doctor who helped the US in tracking bin Laden. Al Jazeera had reported in 2015 that ISI had information on where the Al-Qaeda chief is hiding and they wanted to use<a href="https://www.news18.com/news/world/pakistans-isi-led-us-to-osama-bin-ladens-hideout-claims-imran-khan-2241743.html"> him as bait. </a> In 2013, a leaked report from Pakistan Government said that bin Laden <a href="https://gulfnews.com/world/asia/pakistan/pakistani-intelligence-led-cia-to-bin-laden-imran-khan-1.1563852636298">was seen in Pakistan in 2002</a>, a year after the US invaded Afghanistan. However, there isn’t any evidence to prove that yet.

Imran Khan throws a shocker, says Pakistan knew about Osama living in the country

On Monday, <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword>'s army chief said that he would step down at the end of his three-year term in November according to the military's public relations wing, breaking a precedent of military leaders seeking to extend their terms. 
 General <keyword id="1953535" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Raheel-Sharif">Raheel Sharif</keyword> is considered by many to be Pakistan's most powerful man. 
 
Since he took office in 2013, the army has launched aerial and ground assaults against Islamist insurgent strongholds near the Afghan border in the northwest, earning the military bro ad support from a Pakistani population tired of militant violence. 
 
Critics say the crackdown has been selective, going after some militant groups, but leaving others intact. 
 
Elements of Pakistan's army have in the past been accused of tacitly supporting Islamist armed groups that launch attacks in Afghanistan and India as a way to pressure both neighbours. The general has thrown his support behind elected Prime Minister <keyword id="6576" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nawaz-Sharif">Nawaz Sharif</keyword> during anti-government protests, while at the same time solidifying the military's hold over national security and foreign policy. 
 
General Sharif has also presided over a security crackdown in Karachi, the country's largest city, which has sharply reduced murder rates but drawn protests from opposition politicians who say their activists have been targeted. 
 
Under his watch, the military has been give n authority to try civilians suspected of terrorism in secret military courts. 
 General Sharif is said to have been personally involved in efforts to bring the Afghan <keyword id="16945" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Taliban">Taliban</keyword> into peace talks with Afghanistan, though those efforts have stalled. 
 
Speculation that General Sharif would seek to extend his tenure for another term was baseless, the army's public relations wing said in a series of tweets issued on Monday. 
 
"The Pakistan Army is a great institution. I don't believe in extension," he was quoted as saying. 
 
General Sharif's decision would represent a win for democratic institutions, but raises questions on the future of campaigns against militants. No obvious candidate to succeed him has yet emerged. 
 
General Sharif pledged that efforts to combat terrorism "will continue with full vigor and resolve" after he retired, the army tweets said. 
 Pakistan's past two military chiefs had sought extensions of their terms instead of stepping down, with General <keyword id="44240" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pervez-Musharraf">Pervez Musharraf</keyword> staging a coup to topple Nawaz Sharif during a previous term as prime minister.

In his words, those were the terrorists “who have been trained and fought in some part of <keyword id="6354541" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="afghanistan">Afghanistan</keyword> or Kashmir”. Separately, Imran Khan also claimed the presence of 40 militant groups in Pakistan. Khan claimed that Pakistan’s Army and security forces do not patronise the terror groups. He, however, admitted that police are unable to tackle these trained fighters. "It was said normally that the security forces patronised the groups. We would not be disarming if the security forces were not standing behind us. You cannot disarm because the police are incapable of disarming these groups. They are trained, these people have experience of fighting in Afghanistan, some in Kashmir. The police cannot go after them, so it is the Army that is helping us disarm all militant groups in our country," said Khan. During his three-day visit to the US, Imran Khan has earlier admitted that Pakistan's top spy agency helped the US to locate Al-Qaeda's Chief Osama-bin-Laden in 2001. Yesterday, Khan who is currently on a trip to the US also claimed that Pakistan knew that Osama bin Laden--- America’s most wanted terrorist and the mastermind of the World Trade Center attacks on 9/11--- was living in their country. Khan also added that its own spy agency helped Americans trace bin Laden, which led to a US attack on the country’s soil that killed him in 2011. Pakistan is home to 40,000 terrorists and 40 militant groups, admits Imran Khan

On August 16th, a day after India’s 71st Independence Day, Atal Bihari <keyword id="40921" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vajpayee">Vajpayee</keyword>, the former Prime Minister, passed away in New Delhi at the age of 93. Vajpayee led the central government from 1998 to 2004, and till date is the only Indian Prime Minister from a party other than the Congress to complete a full term. The former <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> leader is set to be joined in this regard by current PM Narendra Modi, when the latter completes his term in May next year. Vajpayee has long been credited with moderating the BJP’s political position with his centrist <keyword id="35497" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="policies">policies</keyword> and socioeconomic reforms, thereby offering voters a viable national alternative to the Congress. A nine-time member of the Lok Sabha and two-time Rajya Sabha MP, he leaves a lasting legacy, and will be remembered for a slew of progressive and bold policies. Here are five of them:- Privatisation Vajpayee made privatisation a key component of his economic agenda when he set up the disinvestment ministry in 1999. Over the course of his tenure as PM, he oversaw the divestment of government holdings in more than 30 non-strategic public-sector companies such as VSNL, Maruti, Hindustan Zinc and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. What makes this policy all the more impressive is that Vajpayee had to overcome a considerable amount of opposition, not only from rival parties but from within his own Cabinet to implement it. Nuclearisation In May 1998, a month after his government came to power, Vajpayee ordered the commencement of five nuclear tests in Rajasthan’s Pokhran district. The move, which signalled India’s nuclear ambitions, drew the ire of Western powers, but it also highlighted India’s ability to defend itself from its neighbour Pakistan, which was building its own nuclear capability at the time. He always maintained that India would not use nuclear weapons first, stating that they would never be “weapons of aggression”. <keyword id="6354776" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom">Telecom</keyword> Upon his death, Vajpayee was hailed as “the father of modern telecom in India” by leaders in the industry. Under his National Telecom policy, which was introduced in 1999, Vajpayee opened up the sector and implemented a number of structural reforms such as making mobile service providers offer services on a revenue share basis as opposed to a fixed-fee arrangement. This led to a reduction in call rates, a dramatic surge in mobile subscribers and encouraged competition among telecom operators. Roads and infrastructure While Vajpayee was prime minister, he launched a number of massive infrastructure projects to develop India’s roads and railway network. His government approved and funded the operations of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, which completed the first phase of the Delhi Metro in 2006. He also championed the Golden Quadrilateral scheme, a project to link all four of India’s major urban centers - Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata - by highways. Most importantly, though, was his Pradhanmantri Gramin Sadak Yojna scheme to improve road connectivity in India’s rural regions. <keyword id="45865" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indo-Pak">Indo-Pak</keyword> relations and Kargil Vajpayee made a number of steps to cement ties with Pakistan, such as the establishment of the Delhi-Lahore bus service in February 1999. He took the bus to Lahore and met with Nawaz Sharif, who was the leader of Pakistan at the time. Their meeting culminated in the signing of the Lahore Treaty, which outlined the country’s plans to steer clear of nuclear warfare. The goodwill was shortlived, however. A full-scale war took place in Kargil the following June. In July 2001, Vajpayee pushed for a peace summit with his new Pakistani counterpart, Pervez Musharraf in Agra. An agreement never materialised over the course of the summit, but not for his lack of trying.

Today Musharraf <a href="http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/aug/20/ex-pakistani-leader-pervez-musharraf-charged-assas/">was charged with</a> murder, conspiracy to commit murder and facilitation for murder. 
But there’s more to the story than one leader jockeying for power with another. The <keyword id="16945" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Taliban">Taliban</keyword> in Pakistan is widely believed to be directly responsible for the attack, and <a href="http://www.thehindu.com/news/international/south-asia/kayani-had-doubts-about-taliban-involvement-in-bhuttos-death/article5041759.ece">five suspected militants have already been charged</a>. Musharraf’s alleged complicity in the attack connects him to the Taliban in Pakistan, an organization that <a href="http://www.indianexpress.com/news/taliban-plot-to-target-musharraf-emerges/1149500/">repeatedly targeted him for assassination</a>.
After Bhutto's death, Musharraf gave an interview with CBS News’ Lara Logan where he said there was little he could have done to prevent her death.

Former Pakistani President Indicted In Murder Of Assassinated Leader Benazir Bhutto

NEW DELHI: A reference by Gujarat CM <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> to <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> leader <keyword id="51730" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ahmed-Patel">Ahmed Patel</keyword> as a "good friend" who has stopped taking calls was edited out by Doordarshan when the national broadcaster telecast an interview with Modi on Sunday. 
 
"Ahmedbhai is among the best friends I have in Congress but not now… I had a good friendship with him and would have preferred that it had remained so… but he now runs away from me and doesn't take my calls," Modi said in the interview. 
 
When contacted, Patel told TOI, "This is election time and people say all sorts of things. I would not have liked to comment otherwise but this is part of his by-now familiar devious script, so I do wish to put it on record that to the best of my recollection, I had lunch with him once in 1980s. That was in the knowledge of my leadership. I have clarified this earlier also. I have not had even a cup of tea with him since he became chief minister in 2001." 
 Modi's suggestion that he has been on good terms with Congress chief <keyword id="689" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sonia-Gandhi">Sonia Gandhi</keyword>'s political secretary and the two have even dined at one another's homes is among the bits that DD chose not to telecast, sparking a controversy over the interview being "censored". 
 The Modi campaign beat DD's bid to edit what the national broadcaster considered "sensitive" bits by posting the entire unedited interview on the <keyword id="6356617" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="bjp-leader">BJP leader</keyword>'s website. It is understood that the interview was separately recorded by the Gujarat government. 
 
DD's decision to telecast Modi's interview without any publicity and its editing out of certain remarks was reported by TOI on Thursday. In all, some 20 minutes of the 56-minute interview were not telecast. 
 
Responding to a question why he sought to bait Patel as "mian Ahmed", Modi said the term was a mark of respect and that he affectionately referred to Patel as "babubhai" in private. 
 
 
 
Another bite snipped out of the interview, as reported by TOI, was Modi's reference to Priyanka Gandhi as a "daughter" defending her family, a reference dismissed by Priyanka on Thursday with a curt comment that Rajiv Gandhi was her father. 
 
Asked how he reacted to Priyanka's criticism of him, Modi said, "I don't take it seriously. Any daughter would do the same for brother and her mother… akhir beti, beti hai (after all a daughter is a daughter). I would not mind her saying anything… If she abuses me ten times more, it will still be a case of a daughter being a daughter." 
 
DD director general (news) S M Khan in a statement denied there was any attempt to downplay the interview or deliberately edit it. He said the editing was done for technical reasons. 
 
Contrary to the official statement, sources said responses to several queries including former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf were edited out. 
 
DD anchor Ashok Shrivastav questioned Modi about his disparaging reference to Musharraf as "Mian Musharraf" in a 2002 speech. "No country however powerful has the right to insult my nation or my state… I raised my voice because he (Musharraf) abused us (by raising the Gujarat riots) at the UN platform," Modi said. 
 
The BJP leader said the Congress strategy to align with a possible third front was to keep BJP from coming to power. But he asserted that the days of the "maa-bete ki sarkar (mother-son government)" were numbered. He added that Congress, having initially misread the strength of the BJP campaign, was now trying to ensure that either the NDA did not form a government or if it did, it would be a weak one. 
 
When contacted, Shrivastav refused to comment on the "edits" but social media was on fire with several people demanding the complete interview be uploaded in the interest of transparency. Shrivastav on Thursday tweeted, "Original interview was 56 minutes but I got half an hour chunk. We telecast 34 minutes… Professionally I feel we should have telecast full version." 
 
On the editing of the interview, Shrivastav said he was not the final word on what went on air. "Professionally, I also feel that portion is important shouldn't edited (sic). I am not final authority," he said. He also confirmed that Modi's office had independently recorded the interview and had a copy. 
 
Reacting to TOI's report, DD's Khan said in a statement, "There was no deliberate editing or omission of any portion of interview. Wherever editing was done was for technical reasons and during post production. There was no interference or control from any authority in the entire process."
