But you won’t mind shelling out more at Starbucks if you are trying a Clover cup of brew. Clover is a state-of-the-art coffee-maker that uses vacuum-press technology to brew one cup at a time. It also lets one select the brewing time and temperature to coax the best flavour out of the particular bean. Each machine costs around $11,000, but as Starbucks has bought the company six years ago, one can imagine the kind of investment it has made to serve ‘personalised’ coffee. Apple offers free AirPods as Diwali gift with iPhone 11 in India

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5756731cdd0895a8618b49e0-2000/hsbcpostits.jpg" alt="hsbcpostits" data-mce-source="HSBC" /><p class="source"><span>HSBC</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>HSBC is developing a major new app called "Nudge" that aims to help people save money by keeping track of their everyday spending.</p><p>The high-profile development was actually born out of a simple exercise between HSBC's new digital chief and his wife.</p><p>"My wife used to leave Post-It notes on the fridge, nudging me not to eat the rest of the desserts in the fridge," said Raman Bhatia, head of digital <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> at HSBC in an interview with Business Insider.</p><p>"The notes would say, 'you've had one pot already, don't eat another.' Basically it was a push notification, it's the same principle [as those used on Nudge]."</p><p>Nudge sends tailor-made notifications to users on their spending habits, telling them how much they are spending on a day-to-day basis and comparing it to past days or similar people.</p><p>For example, it can tell you that today you spent £25 ($36) more on food than you did last week, or that you have spent £50 more on coffee in one week than someone else in the same age or demographic does.</p><p>The idea is to "encourage customers to make small, regular financial decisions that will result in a change to long-term spending habits," says HSBC.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5756731cdd0895a8618b49e1-1820/examplenudges1.jpg" alt="examplenudges1" data-mce-source="HSBC" /><p class="source"><span>HSBC</span></p><p class="caption">Examples of the notifications you would receive from the Nudge application from HSBC.</p></div><p></p></div></div>"We are the first bank to marry behavioural science with everyday banking," says Bhatia. "The theory of Nudge is very simple. Whether you are deciding to eat that next doughnut or save for a rainy day, people are motivated by the present rather than planning for the future."</p><p>"We thought, 'how do you make everyday financing more engaging and contextual for customers,' so we partnered with leading academic Professor Paul Dolan [from the London School of Economics and Political Science] to look at how to address everyday financial behaviour."</p><p>The app took around 6-8 weeks to build and was trialled with 500 HSBC employees over a 3-month period at the start of the year.</p><p>Bhatia says: "We found that a combination of positive reinforcement and messages of loss aversion, and comparing your [spending] activity to people like you on a real-time basis helped people trying to save."</p><p>Bhatia added that the feedback from the pilot scheme of Nudge was "overwhelmingly" positive and says the more personalised the notifications are, the more the users saves money.</p><p>"We deliberately tried to be 'nannying' with the notifications and the users of the app found that the more highly personalised the messages were, the more people were acting on [notifications]. For example, personalised messages [that had greater effect] were like 'if you spend this much on coffee, you will not meet your saving goal,' rather than 'you are spending a lot of money on coffee,'" said Bhatia.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5756731cdd0895a8618b49e2-1200/raman2.jpg" alt="raman2" data-mce-source="HSBC" /><p class="source"><span>HSBC</span></p><p class="caption">Rama Bhatia, Head of Digital, UK at HSBC.</p></div><p></p></div></div>It is with this in mind that Bhatia and his team are making tweaks to the app before a public roll-out to HSBC customers.</p><p>Nudge is potentially a big deal for HSBC, which is currently a lot less prominent in the fintech - financial technology - sector than other banks, many of which are ploughing <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/goldman-blockchain-beyond-the-hype-practical-uses-2016-5">huge amounts of investment into more esoteric concepts such as blockchain</a>, the technology that underpins bitcoin.</p><p>While not as flashy, HSBC's tech developments are helping customers, says Bhatia. For example, HSBC claims it has saved retail customers over £100 million by automatically signing customers up to text message alerts that tell them if they are over their agreed lending limits.</p><p>Usually, if a customer breaches an agreed overdraft limit, they are charged a £5 penalty per day they remain over the limit. This can sting you at the end of the month if you don't check your balance regularly.</p><p>But the text from HSBC notifies the customer to the breach and if they deposit the relevant funds to take them back into their agreed limit they can avoid the charge.</p><p>As for Nudge, Bhatia is tight-lipped on the actual launch date. He didn't even give what quarter or year the bank is working towards for a full launch. This is what Paytm's new office in Bengaluru looks like

<ol></ol>Imagine your neighbourhood grocery store. You go there every week to buy a particular brand of sugar, rice and milk. One day, you go to the store and the store owner just hands you what you buy every day. "You are a regular at the store sir, we know what you need and we'll always have it available."<br /><br />You're happy to do business with this store. You feel special and the store's personalised service has you doing more business with them. A year later, the store owner is retiring and handing over the business to his son. He tells his son that you're a regular customer and you buy X, Y and Z brand of sugar, rice and milk every week.<br /><br />The store owner's son is more modern. He takes this information, looks at the contents of each box, nutrition value, price etc. The next time you walk into the store, he offers a different brand of each of these items to you, explaining how they're better.<br /><br />You realise he's right, but while the milk and rice are cheaper, the sugar is more expensive. After some contemplation, you buy them all, walking away happy that the son has provided even more personalised service.<br /><br />Unbeknownst to you, the son had worked up a deal with the sugar manufacturer, that gave him higher margins on that particular brand. He has shrewdly used what he knew about you, to make more profits. Is he wrong? What would he have done if you were experimenting and buying different brands often, just to see what suits you better?<br /><br /><strong>Whose data is it anyway ?<br /><br /></strong>Now, a few months have passed and you're sort of friends with the store owner's son. You chat with him about day to day things, even talk about things you buy and why you do so. In these conversations, the son, one day, learns that you’re trying to get in shape. He tells the same to the gym trainer next door. That man, in turn, approaches you on the street with a workout plan, telling you how it would be perfect for you and that he'll give you a discount.<br /><br />He says the discount is because you were referred by the grocery store owner next door. Are you offended? Do you feel like your trust has been breached? If you are, you may not give so much information to the store owner next time. However, if you do sign up for the fitness services, you will probably casually thank the store owner next time for hooking you up.<br /><br />That's how data works on the Internet. <keyword id="6354576" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword> inserts these little things, called pixels, on almost every website you visit, with the website owner’s permission. So, when you do visit them, Facebook knows you were there and what you did. The next time you're on the News Feed, you see advertisements about products you saw earlier.<br /><br />Over time, Facebook starts monitoring what you do on and off the social network. It takes all this information and shares it with its neighbourhood stores, i.e, third parties that advertise through its ad networks. Is that wrong? Certainly not.<br /><br />Why then is it Facebook's fault if one of the third parties decide to misuse that data? We're at <keyword id="3168816" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="cambridge-analytica">Cambridge Analytica</keyword> (CA) now, of course. The British firm that created "psychographic profiles" of users and was apparently instrumental in putting <keyword id="6354862" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="trump">Trump</keyword> in the <keyword id="4757411" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-white-House">US White House</keyword>.<br /><br />A psychographic profile is a profile created based on your behaviour, likes, dislikes and emotions. CA used the data to apparently turn voters in favour of Trump, Modi or any other politician anywhere else, but one could argue that they were prone to be turned anyway. Haven't political campaigns always been about getting voters to vote for the politicians?<br /><br />In the Internet-age, we argue that user data belongs to the user. But, how is sharing data any different from talking to strangers and people you meet. Everything you say or do provides information about you. That's why we should always think before we speak, right?<br /><br />Are we asking Facebook to not take our data? Sure, it could easily stop doing so. But then it won't be able to show you personalised results, the right posts and more. Remember when social media was confusing, irritating and not addictive? Are you fine going back to that? <br /><br /><strong>Convenience vs Privacy<br /><br /></strong>When any browser, app or website takes your data, it is making an implicit promise to not use it nefariously, Facebook included. The terms and conditions that you never read, usually mention, in language that is difficult or too long to comprehend, that your data will be used. Take this paragraph from Facebook's <a href="https://www.facebook.com/policy.php" data-type="tilCustomLink">data policy</a> for instance,<br /><br /><em>"We receive information about you and your activities on and off Facebook from third-party partners, such as information from a partner when we jointly offer services or from an advertiser about your experiences or interactions with them."<br /><br /></em>This is what allows the social network to display ads from MakeMyTrip right after you've browsed tickets on the website. It's also how Facebook shows you the shirt you just bought from <keyword id="6388367" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="jabong">Jabong</keyword>, or the coffee maker you've been fawning over on Amazon.<br /><br />When you've seen enough shirts on Jabong, Facebook's intelligent algorithms now know you're interested. So, when another third party advertiser wants to target people buying shirts, Facebook helps them target you by putting ads on your News Feed. Isn't this exactly the same situation as the grocery store owner who told the gym trainer about you? Companies even offer promo codes for "first-time users" signing up through their ads.<br /><br />The primary difference here though is that human interactions are slow. It takes people months and even years to learn about each other, but it takes machines days at best. The "pixels" Facebook puts on a website, are cookies that reside on your PC and phone. They're files, a few kilobytes in size, that help the company track your information. The same accounts for <keyword id="6355629" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword>, Microsoft or any other company tracking you.<br /><br />So yes, this improved user-based experience comes with a legally binding contract that is meant to erode away your fundamental right. That contract is called consent.<br /><br />And it is a tradable asset on the Internet. <br /><br />Remember the mall that you entered to buy those ritzy pumps ignoring a small placard that carried a familiar warning about the building being under constant cctv surveillance? You usually take that as a sign that the mall takes good security measures. However, that was also the moment you gave away your consent to be private.<br /><br />The cost for convenience is deanonymization of your data, and you have to determine the value of this trade off.<br /><br /><strong>Is Facebook the favourite whipping boy?<br /><br /></strong>In the 21st century, privacy is perhaps the biggest question on everyone's minds. But political experts have always yearned to understand the electorate better. Do we now have a problem because they can do so with scary accuracy? <br /><br />That might be true, but it still may not be the answer. At best, this is gerrymandering in the digital age. Instead of redrawing district boundaries, political parties can learn more about you and turn you. <a href="http://tyglobalist.org/in-the-magazine/glimpses/gerrymandering-indian-style-the-political-motivations-for-andhra-pradeshs-division/">Here’s an example</a> of how splitting Telangana from <keyword id="37102" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh">Andhra Pradesh</keyword> was gerrymandering. The existence of social media and machine learning methods seem to make this easier.<br /><br />The central question in all of this is whether you should compromise privacy for convenience. Convenience is basically what's on offer when the biggest tech firms tell you they will give you "personalised" services.<br /><br />In return, you will give up information about you that even your best friends do not know. Remember that the next time you’re searching for porn on Google. <br /><br />And that's why we care about all this. It's not because of what they do know about us, but how powerful that data makes them. But that still doesn't answer why we suddenly expect a corporation to do business like it's a non profit. <br /><br />Corporations are supposed to be responsible when doing business, which Facebook, Google etc. accomplish by establishing Data Policies, Terms and Conditions etc. But what are governments doing? Most governments have been reactionary to private data. Instead of telling Facebook to regulate itself, governments should go ahead and regulate social media already, even if that makes them “big brother”.<br /><br />Multiple governments are questioning these companies today, but it's without answers. Is it possible that privacy is a battle we've already lost, so everyone is simply procrastinating? How will you make a privacy law without hurting businesses? How will you police machines?<br /><br />Cambridge Analytica is not the first time we've seen a breach of trust. Is this breach not enough to police algorithms? You see, the algorithms that make these decisions for Facebook, Google and every other company are hidden. No one knows how they work, including the engineers who originally created them. That’s just the nature of machine learning algorithms, the creator often doesn’t recognise his/her own code after it’s “learned” a few new things.<br /><br />Why can't governments make it so that these algorithms and their behaviour are audited over fixed periods of time? Would that be the solution?<br /><br />Or would a crowdsourced identity market place be an answer?<br />

In defence of Facebook

"Ask the right questions"</strong> - Brittain says that asking the right questions both internally and externally from the company are really important. She told the audience about how "it is astonishing what kind of ripple effect your words can have [on employees] and even worse what how you don't say or do, like non verbal cues, can cause this."</p><p>"You have to be careful what you say and how you say it because when I make a light hearted comment, some people will take that as the number one thing that we have to focus on and then divert all their resources to achieve it. Another time, there was a discussion about how unhappy I looked in a board meeting, as I was staring out of the window looking 'sad.' But little did everyone know that just before the meeting, I looked up quadratic equations on a website and I thought 'I'm not going to be able to help Matthew with his homework tonight."</p><p>2. <strong>"Don't be fake"</strong> -  Brittain says "it takes too much energy to be unauthentic, and to fake it all the time is even more excruciating."<span><br /></span></p><blockquote class="pullquote float_right">It takes too much energy to be unauthentic, and to fake it all the time is even more excruciating.</blockquote><p>"Authentic leadership is key. People are going to be critical and judgmental of you. I suspect that given there are 7 of us [female CEOs in the FTSE 100], we are rare creatures, we also particularly interesting to observe," she added, laughing.</p><p>"I have managed my rise in my career with professional schizophrenia - being able to switch between managing a work life balance, looking after an ageing mother."</p><p><strong>3. Don't surround yourself with "yes people"</strong> - Brittain says that it is important to have a mix of people in your inner circle so they can highlight your strengths and weaknesses and bring about self-awareness. </p><p><strong>4. Confidence -</strong> You are going to need confidence to rise to the top, says Brittain. "If you are a senior manager, head of department, a director already, you are probably or should be competent already but you need to be confident to develop long term strategy and a direction for  company," she says.</p><p><strong>5. Developing a thick skin</strong> - "You need to develop a thick skin. You are going to need it.</p><p><strong>6. Curiosity -</strong> Brittain says being curious of new things is vital for making the leap to the top boss job: "You need to envisage the future, more internally and externally."</p><p>She says that at Whitbread, which owns major brands like Costa Coffee and and Premier Inns, it would be easy to just rest on the laurels of the brands' success. However she says " Premier Inn is already so successful for a long period of time. It is easy to be complacent but from my perspective what got us here, will not get us to there. That is why I have put innovation in number one spot for [Whitbread's] strategy."<span><br /></span></p><blockquote class="pullquote float_right">It is easy to be complacent but from my perspective 'what got us here, will not get us to there.</blockquote><p><strong>7. Embracing current technology</strong> - "An increasing technological skillset is required for any senior leader. Gone are the days tech where tech was subordinated in bowls of basement. It has now reached the top table. One of the few female CEOs gave us her 7 tips to becoming the boss

There have been two major drivers of this: the rise of media-savvy and empowered consumers, and the rapid innovation in the digital technology space. Most of that innovation has come from the United States.<br />
<br />
It has led to Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, Google, Oracle and Cisco having combined market caps of $US2.2 trillion ($2.9 trillion), and to the US being the No 1 hi-tech country in Bloomberg’s 2015 most innovative countries report. It is little wonder Sir Martin Sorrell, head of British marketing giant WPP, says that “the world is not globalising, it’s Americanising”.<br />
<br />
The story of Facebook is well known, from a website enabling on-campus social interaction at Harvard, to today’s 1.13 billion active daily users. No media conglomerate has ever been able to reach a sixth of the globe’s population before, so Facebook is massive from a pure media-reach perspective, let alone the sophisticated data on each individual that is being captured.<br />
<br />
Other US companies such as Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Snapchat have followed suit, building platforms that millions of people want to use every day, and providing marketers with either a mass-media or a hyper-targeted solution, whichever is required.<br />
<br />
Apple has been the big marketing enabler with the iPhone and iPad. It meant consumers had the internet at their fingertips. It has empowered consumers, and changed the way they purchase products and services. In 2016, 90 per cent of Australians use a smart phone and half of those are made by Apple.<br />
<br />
Google’s initial aim was to organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible, but by the mid-2000s it was becoming a key weapon in marketers’ armoury. First through its search engine capabilities, then through its acquisitions of YouTube and what later would become Google Maps, then through the launch in 2007 of its Android mobile platform and a year later Google Chrome. These innovations have seen advertising revenue on the various Google platforms rise to $US60bn annually.<br />
<br />
The other achievers in the marketing innovation space have been those companies that provide the tools and platforms to bring together the disparate marketing touchpoints, in order to drive customer engagement — the search activity, the social media, the digital ads, the traditional ads, the websites, the emails, the loyalty programs and so on. Again it’s the American companies, Adobe, Salesforce and Oracle, that have led in this space. Their Marketing Cloud platforms enable marketers to mix the data they have on their customers, as well as all of the various communications and content they have developed, and then personalise campaign messages to customers across multiple digital assets and devices.<br />
<br />
The next few years will see the uptake of the Internet of Things, where almost any object will be able to receive and send data online. Companies such as Cisco are leading the charge here. For marketers, the opportunities are endless: switch on your coffee machine from the other end of your house when your alarm clock goes off; automatically order your coffee pods when they are close to running out. There are already more than 10 billion connected devices in the world.<br />
<br />
Augmented reality, virtual reality and artificial intelligence are also reaching a point where marketers will be able use them well. In the AR space, it took only days for McDonalds to introduce Pokemon Go “gyms” at all of their 3000 Japanese restaurants. Pokemon Go is another brilliant example of American technology, that also highlights the massive changes taking place in the marketing landscape: it took 38 years for radio to reach 50 million people; Pokemon Go caught that many in just 19 days.<br />
<br /> US companies have done a terrific job in the past decade in driving marketing innovation through technology. South Korea’s Samsung, and China’s Tencent and <keyword id="302749" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alibaba">Alibaba</keyword> conglomerates, won’t let the US companies have it all their own way over the next decade, however. It’s an ever-evolving space, and one that the top marketers are constantly assessing.<br />

US marketing technology has transformed how brands communicate

<p>The company recently revealed a new self-learning technology that will enable Jaguars and Land Rovers to detect drivers and their preferences while also reminding drivers of upcoming events.</p>
<p>The idea is that the cars will learn from your habits, schedules, and preferences so that it can automatically and independently act.</p>
<p>Jaguar Land Rover has not yet confirmed when this technology will be in the hands of consumers, but it says it could happen in the next few years.</p>
<p>"Our new learning algorithm means information learnt about you will deliver a completely personalised driving experience and enhance driving pleasure," <span>Dr. Wolfgang Epple, </span>director of research and technology for Jaguar Land Rover, told The Telegraph.</p>
