<ul><li><keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword> wrote a letter to the National Payments Corporation of <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> (NPCI) over concerns that <keyword id="2750705" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-Pay">Google Pay</keyword> is violating the rights of its customers.</li><li>The letter also accused <keyword id="6355629" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword> of abusing customer data for monetary gain through promotional and advertorial use. </li><li>Google, in response, stated that any individual UPI transactions data is not being used for monetisation of any kind.</li></ul>Not only did Paytm, the Indian online payments platform, <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/google-pay-sharing-payments-data-with-group-firms-third-parties-paytm-118092001351_1.html">accuse Google Pay</a>, formerly known as Tez, of violating user’s data rights but also said that it’s using that information for monetary gain. Google did issue a, not so strong, response that begs the question of how far the accusations hold true. In the past, <keyword id="198636" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vijay-Shekhar-Sharma">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword>, the CEO of Paytm, posed some serious <a href="https://www.facebook.com/cnbctv18india/videos/paytm-ceo-on-whatsapp-pay/1710237529013638/">accusations</a> against <keyword id="790242" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="WhatsApp">Whatsapp</keyword> in an interview with CNBC-TV18. This time he issued a letter to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) chief, Dilip Abse, over concerns how Google Pay is conducting business. The localisation debate The letter from Paytm to the NPCI comes at a time when India is in the midst of drafting its own <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/gdpr-compliant-firms-should-find-it-easy-to-adhere-to-draft-personal-data-protection-bill-in-india/articleshow/65198854.cms">Personal Data Protection Bill</a>. Google, while agreeing to comply with all the rules put forward by the Indian government with regard to digital payments, has still been pushing for the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/heres-what-sundar-pichai-had-to-say-to-the-indian-government/articleshow/65756506.cms">free cross-border flow</a> of data. Google’s argument is that data liberalisation is key for development and will also them to help the Indian startups and its digital economy. One97 Communication, on the other hand, the company that owns Paytm, says that it has stored and processed the data from Indian users on shore. In the past, Sharma had defended his views <a href="https://www.facebook.com/cnbctv18india/videos/paytm-ceo-on-whatsapp-pay/1710237529013638/">stating</a> that “It’s not all about being protectionist. Everyone should be allowed to play the field. But no one should arm twist and tweak rules to suit their design” The letter to NPCI The letter by Paytm highlights 3 separate areas where they think Google Pay isn’t abiding by Indian data laws. Their first concern is that user data is being used for monetary gain through promotional material since their privacy policy states that, ‘it collects, stores, uses and discloses their user’s personal data for advertising and promotional purposes’. They add this is particularly concerning since this data is also being disclosed to Google, group companies and other unnamed third parties. They point out that the data in question includes user’s navigations, logs and correspondence rosters. Paytm’s letter suggests that this brings the question of intent in to play. Google’s response Google response to Paytm’s accusations was mild at most. In a statement to <a href="https://www.medianama.com/2018/09/223-policy-wars-after-whatsapp-paytm-trains-its-guns-on-google-pay/">MediaNama</a>, the company said that a ‘common Google account’ ensures that checks are in place to manage risk, fraud, spam and other nuisances. These checks are, in turn, common across all Google products allowing for ‘seamlessness of service’.

Paytm has been facing the pressure from competition as according to <a href="https://www.theinformation.com/articles/once-dominant-paytm-stalls-in-india">reports</a>, its monthly active users in December 2019 too were at 40 million, down from 45 million a year earlier. Paytm reached out to Business Insider to say that "Paytm Wallet &amp; other payment methods (net-banking, cards, IMPS etc) available on our app has continued to grow and we register a huge number of transactions. Overall, Paytm continues to dominate digital payments and has over 50% market share of mobile payments to merchants. We have the largest offline merchant network in the country with over 17 million merchants." The spokesperson added that "Paytm has over 10 million daily transacting users and our overall user base is much more than the combined UPI base of all players." According to the TechCrunch report which cited data from National Payments Corporation of India, Google Pay had 540 million UPI transactions, PhonePe had 460 million while Paytm saw 120 million. Another <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/google-pay-maintains-lead-amazon-pay-starts-to-show-scale-as-paytm-sees-volumes-fall/articleshow/76294038.cms">report</a> said that Amazon Pay too had ramped up its operations and saw 60 million UPI transactions in May. According to NPCI, the total UPI transactions in May hit 1.23 billion. However, Paytm has clarified that " UPI consists of just a minor percentage of all digital payments happening in the country. The largest majority of payments is made on wallets, cards, and net banking." PhonePe, which claims to have 200 million registered users, has been slowly increasing its merchants user base as well and now has over 10 million merchants onboard. It has also diversified to financial services and offers travel insurance as well. Meanwhile, Amazon Pay too is offering more to users. In April, it launched the pay now, buy later option for its users. WhatsApp will be the real challenge for Google Pay But the next big challenge will come from Facebook;s WhatsApp, which has 400 million monthly active users in India – thanks to the Reliance Jio-Facebook deal. Analysts at Bernstein expect WhatsApp Pay’s penetration to increase to 30% (from the current 10%) by FY25. WhatsApp Pay has been in the testing mode in India since 2018, and has been caught up with regulatory hurdles. But its bank of already existing users (through WhatsApp), will make it easier to conquer the market. And that is visible already. According to Bernstein’s hypothesis, WhatsApp has already garnered 10.7% of the market in the first phase of rollout since the approval came in February. The subsequent phases will be much bigger and a lot more competitive. “Payments remains the missing link, the tie up could be a potential game changer with WhatsApp Pay integration with JioMart,” said the report by Bernstein. Google Pay has a solid lead over PhonePe, Paytm and Amazon Pay⁠ in India⁠— but its biggest challenge is yet to come

cases and investigations point out the same allegations of how Google unfairly controls what we search for, what we read, watch and purchase and a lot more. This prevents rivals with similar products from offering their services to customers. In addition to these cases, several countries are reconsidering regulations and policies. Australia made history this year by passing a law that requires companies such as Facebook and Google to pay local publishers for news. Google initially threatened to remove its search engine from Australia but it later struck deals with news publishers for news. Recently, another <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/apple-and-googles-ability-to-take-a-cut-of-every-app-purchase-is-in-peril-due-to-a-new-south-korean-bill/articleshow/85804681.cms">South Korean government</a> also passed a bill that would allow third-party payment systems on Google and Apple app stores. If the bill is signed then it would make South Korea the first country to impose a law on Google and Apple preventing them from forcing their own payment services on in-app purchases. Google and Apple both have been criticised for their 30% app store commissions through in-app purchases. In response to the backlash from developers, Google and Apple both reduced the 30% cut to 15%. Google actually deferred the Play Store policy to April 2022 after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/google-defers-30-play-store-app-fee-for-developers-in-india-till-march-2022/articleshow/78486826.cms">backlash from Indian startups</a> like Paytm. Google has also been facing an antitrust probe in India on allegations that the company prevents OEMs from making devices that run alternative versions of Android. Google’s requirement of pre-installing its apps was also found to be in violation of India’s competition law. Epic Games, which is in a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/apple-and-epic-games-are-revealing-a-ton-of-industry-secrets-in-court-filings-from-untold-billions-in-fortnite-profits-to-private-email-exchanges-these-are-the-5-juiciest-bits/articleshow/82481641.cms">legal battle with Apple</a>, introduced its own payment system for Fortnite and has since been unavailable on iOS. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Internal issues" comment="subhead" text="Internal issues">Internal issues</cmsannotation> Internally too the company has several issues with those about diversity in the limelight. Back in 2019 Google’s diversity chief left the company following an uproar from employees over the workplace culture. Like many 23-year-olds, Google is facing ‘trust’ issues

<ul><li>The company, which is a part of the startup world’s new favourite term – Dukaantech, helps Indian businesses go online and was launched at the peak of the pandemic. </li><li>Dukaan co-founder and CEO Suumit Shah, in an interview with Business Insider, talks about the growth he had never expected out of an app they had launched on a whim. </li><li>Dukaan is live on the Play Store again after being banned for over a month after a legal battle with <keyword id="7598194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="khatabook">Khatabook</keyword>.</li></ul>For the barely eight-month-old Dukaan, it’s been a crazy ride. In just eight months, the startup has garnered millions of users, millions in funding, and landed in a soup with a legal battle with Khatabook. The company, which is a part of the startup world’s new favourite term – Dukaantech, helps Indian businesses go online and was launched at the peak of the pandemic. Dukaan opens Dukaan co-founder and CEO Suumit Shah, in a candid chat with Business Insider, talks about the growth he had never expected out of an app they had launched on a whim. During peak lockdown, Shah got a text from a Jockey outlet with a PDF file with all their items listed, and the text read that you can place your order on WhatsApp and they’ll deliver. This brought up two questions on Shah’s mind – why aren’t they using platforms like Shopify, what happens when they get over 50 orders or how will they keep track of them all. At this point, Shah was building a company called Rank, which had a tool that lets you know where your business stands on Google Search and other metrics. “We took a look at the market and decided to build an app that will make it easier for businesses to build their inventory. We built the app in two-three days and immediately started getting a lot of calls,” Shah told Business Insider. As the calls kept coming in and feature requests kept piling up, they realised that small businesses have their ways of creating catalogues and have different metrics. “People were doing anything to get back into the business,” Shah said and added that they found takers in people who were earlier opposed to online. Within a week, they had 25,000 orders, and by November, they had over 2.7 million stores created through their platform, which have processed a cumulative ₹100 crore in Gross Merchandising Volume (GMV). The legal battle with Khatabook For Dukaan, the fast-tracked growth hasn’t come without legal woes. The Khatabook-Dukaan legal battle became the talk of the town, as the former accused Dukaan of copyright infringement over the source code of the application. Khatabook was also running its own app called Dukaan by Khatabook. After an intense battle in court, Dukaan was ordered to take down its app from all platforms, including <keyword id="6369511" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-play-store">Google Play Store</keyword>. In an out of court settlement, Khatabook and Dukaan resolved the issue with <a href="https://entrackr.com/2020/11/khatabook-and-dukaan-resolve-issues-out-of-court/">Khatabook getting nominal equity in Growthpond </a>(Dukaan’s parent company). And after all that, Dukaan is now live on the Play Store again. Shah looks back at the entire legal battle and says that it has indeed been a roller coaster ride. “The issue isn’t there anymore, they allowed us to use the name Dukaan, and they’ll keep running their app; we will run ours. India is a huge market, and ultimately, the best product will win. These products need the hour, so the user will rely on the product, which helps you and gives you the output. For example, even when Paytm existed and had so many businesses, Khatabook came and created its own segment. Exactly that way, we have our own space and impact we are creating,” said Shah. Cashing in big cheques in a short time Dukaan has been one of those rare startups that has received significant funding within a month of its launch. While there are <a href="https://entrackr.com/2020/10/exclusive-dukaan-app-removed-from-play-store-after-court-relief-to-khatabook/">theories about the financing</a>, Shah says the money came their way because of the popularity of the product. “In one week, we were trending on top on the Google Play Store, investors were looking at that, and we got a lot of inbound calls. On the first call, we had a term sheet of $17 million. By the end, we had four term sheets on the table, and we had to choose who to go with,” he said. Dukaan has raised $6 million in seed funding co-led by Matrix Partners India and Lightspeed India Partners. The round also saw participation from angel investors like Haresh Chawla (Founding CEO Network18, Viacom18), Ryan Hoover (Founder, Weekend Fund and Product Hunt), Jitendra Gupta (Founder, Jupiter), Shashank Kumar (Founder, Razorpay), Sandeep Tandon (Founder, Freecharge), Prabhkiran Singh (Founder, Bewakoof.com), and Kunal Shah (Founder, Cred). But while Shah believes they aren’t growing too fast, he admits he never expected this coming. “In the beginning, a friend of mine knew someone who was a distributor for a big FMCG company. He gave me the deal that he will onboard 15000 stores and give me a 5% stake. I thought about the order; I actually considered it until I got 25,000 orders in a day. So I wasn’t expecting these numbers – the reality has been much better,” said Shah. “The kind of users were also not expected – people selling bakra on eid, panditji selling satyanarayana pooja ka saaman, these are things I hadn’t expected,” he added. But now, there’s a lot more to do Dukaan is back on the Play Store after being down for over a month, which means they have lost out on many incoming users. However, Shah claims that even while they weren’t on the Play Store, they have managed to remain a market leader as they helped the existing users. “By the end of March 2021, having 15 million merchants is what we are trying to achieve,” said Shah. And they are also coming up with new features to support merchants. “Right now, the basic app digitizes the business. The questions merchants have is how do I get more business. We will build small marketing tools that will help our users market their business — for example, WhatsApp stories. We have built a small tool where you can design WhatsApp stories and display your offers. The next funnel is how do we make sure the sellers get more reach. Online payment functionalities is another thing we are working on,” he shared. While Shah claims they made $1200 on day one, the focus is now not on revenue but on building the business. Instead of random selection and baseline eligibility, the government is pitching for a wage-based selection process that will prioritise higher salaries. It claims that instead of bringing the best and the brightest into the country, the random selection process is bringing in relatively lower-paid foreign labour at the expense of the US workforce. The department also justified that the new system will be more appropriate for the current crisis, where supply of foreign talent is more than demand. “If finalized as proposed, this new selection process would incentivize employers to offer higher wages or petition for positions requiring higher skills and higher-skilled workers instead of using the program to fill relatively lower-paid vacancies,” said the <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2020/10/28/dhs-trump-administration-protect-american-jobs-unfair-international-competition">notice. </a> US technology giants are fighting the change to visa rules tooth-and-nail Over 50 US technology companies — including big wigs like Microsoft, Amazon, and Facebook — have taken a stand against the ban on the entry of foreign employees into the US. The legal brief challenges US President Donald Trump on the issue. It argues that visa restrictions will hurt the interest of businesses within the US and lead employees to hire workers outside the US instead of letting them work from within the country. These companies assert that instead of helping the debilitating state of the employment, the restrictions will only serve to damage the already struggling US economy further. However, one US court has already shot down an appeal filed by 169 Indian who challenged the ban.
