<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="7908002" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lil-Nas-X">Lil Nas X</keyword> credited "self discovery" <keyword id="5050" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="books">books</keyword> for his personal growth during the pandemic, he told GQ.</li><li>The genre "teaches you to block out the things in your life that you don't really care about," he said. </li><li>The books include "The Rose Effect," "The Alchemist," "The Four Agreements," and "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F--k." </li></ul><p>As we all started to emerge from our pandemic winter of isolation, Lil Nas X burst onto the charts with a new song that <em>- </em>like his record-shattering anthem "Old Town Road" <em>- </em>was an instant hit.</p><p>He's also entering the post-pandemic world <a href="https://www.insider.com/lil-nas-x-billie-eilish-jealous-grammys-win-bad-guy-2021-5">a more self-actualized and confident person</a>, in large part thanks to the reading habit he picked up in 2020, the 22-year-old rapper and singer <a href="https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/culture/article/lil-nas-x-interview-2021">said in an interview for British GQ</a>'s Style Summer 2021 issue.</p><p>In fact, the "self-discovery" books, he said, helped him "create this moment" of success. His song "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)" amassed 46.9 million US streams in the first week it was released on March 26, 2021. </p><p>"It teaches you to block out the things in your life that you don't really care about," Nas, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, told writer Jamal Jordan. </p><p>"Like, if I read a negative comment or whatever, I get to decide, is this important to me? Is this true? Is this not true? If it is true, then how do we make it untrue? If it isn't true, then why the f--k do we care?"</p><p>Here are four of the books Nas credited for his newfound ability to move past negativity and build confidence. </p><h2>"The Rose Effect: Eight Steps to Delivering the Performance of Your Life" by Keana "KJ Rose" Henson </h2><p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Rose-Effect-Eight-Delivering-Performance-ebook/dp/B0874D8KKH">"The Rose Effect"</a> is a "performance guide" written by a Grammy Award-winning musician known as the "talent whisperer" in Hollywood.</p><p>Henson has also spent time in corporate America, working at places ranging from Pfizer Pharmaceuticals to Clive Davis's J Records, and coaching.  </p><p>"The culmination of these experiences shaped KJ's fervor for pushing performers, actors, singers, executives and artists of all disciplines beyond their perceived capacity," the book's description on Amazon says. Its purpose is "to help you occupy your space in every room and on every stage." </p><p>"The Rose Effect," which was published in April 2020, focuses on courage, <a href="https://lasentinel.net/grammy-award-winning-performance-expert-kj-rose-releases-new-book-the-rose-effect.html">according to the Los Angeles Sentinel</a>. "Whatever is your perceived capacity, The Rose Effect is here to take you higher," Henson said. "Whatever you think about yourself currently, my job is to push your journey further." </p><h2>"The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho</h2><p>"The Alchemist," first published in 1988 by the Brazilian author Paulo Coelho, <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/buzz/paulo-coelho-creates-a-guinness-world-record-for-being-the-most-translated-living-author-for-his-book-the-alchemist-720115.html">set a record in 2014</a> as the most translated book by a living author. It's sold more than 2 million copies globally, according to the book's <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Alchemist-Paulo-Coelho/dp/0061122416">Amazon page</a>.</p><p>The novel follows an Andalusian shepherd boy as he travels from Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of a buried treasure. The people he meets, including an alchemist, help direct his journey, which is ultimately about Santiago finding himself. </p><p>While not explicitly a self-help book, "the story of Santiago is an eternal testament to the transforming power of our dreams and the importance of listening to our hearts," the book's <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18144590-the-alchemist">Good Reads description says</a>. </p><p>As one reader wrote, "reading this book always sets me back on the right path towards achieving the dreams I have put on hold." Others disagreed, with one calling the book "badly written, righteous, condescending, preachy, and worst of all, the ending was morally questionable." </p><h2>"The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom" by Don Ruiz </h2><p>"The Four Agreements" is a New York Times bestseller that's been translated into 46 languages since its 2018 release, helping people dismantle their self-limiting beliefs using Toltec wisdom, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Four-Agreements-Practical-Personal-Freedom/dp/1878424319">according to Amazon</a>. </p><p><a href="https://www.richlandlibrary.com/catalog/detail/1666268">Oprah is a</a><a href="https://www.richlandlibrary.com/catalog/detail/1666268"> fan,</a> saying it has "made a tremendous difference in how I think and act in every encounter."</p><p>The agreements are: Be impeccable with your word, don't take anything personally, don't make assumptions, and always do your best. </p><p>The book is great "for stress management and personal growth," Elizabeth Scott <a href="https://www.verywellmind.com/the-four-agreements-by-don-miguel-ruiz-3144895">wrote for VeryWell Mind</a>. "It's written in simple language but deals with complex themes that can help you bring sweeping changes to your life." However, she cautions, taking the agreements to an extreme can backfire. </p><h2>"The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F--k" by Mark Manson</h2><p>"The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck" was Nas's favorite of the four, according to GQ.</p><p>It pushes back against positive-thinking, self-help philosophies and teaches readers that "improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better," <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28257707-the-subtle-art-of-not-giving-a-f-ck">its description on Good Reads says</a>. </p><p>"Most of us struggle throughout our lives by giving too many f---s in situations where f---s do not deserve to be given," like the rude gas station attendant or the cancelled TV show or the rain, Manson, a popular blogger, <a href="https://markmanson.net/not-giving-a-fuck">writes on his website</a>. </p><p>Those grudges serve no purpose, he argues. "Because when we give too many f---s, when we choose to give a f--k about everything, then we feel as though we are perpetually entitled to feel comfortable and <a href="https://markmanson.net/how-to-be-happy" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">happy at all times</a>, that's when life f--s us." </p><p>Published in 2016, the book has more than 600,000 ratings on Good Reads, mostly positive. "I don't usually go for self-help books cause to me they are all the same!" one commenter wrote. "Smile more, love more, hate less, don't give up, it's gonna be okay, it's all in your head. Blah blah blah ... but this one was the exception." </p>

She read it and immediately fell in love with the book's universal message about pursuing one's own path. </p><p>"Following my dreams and trusting my heart provided me with so many professional and personal opportunities," Cohen, who is the CFO of digital-marketplace company <a href="https://www.angihomeservices.com/">ANGI Homeservices</a>, told Business Insider. "It has taught me more than I ever expected."</p><p>Many people have "that book" they turn to time and time again for insights. And while some power players might recommend self-help tomes or lofty works of nonfiction (as hedge-fund billionaire <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ray-dalio-book-recommendation-reading-2019-7">Ray Dalio recently did in an exclusive interview</a> with Business Insider), Cohen's choice stands out for being a novel.</p><p>Published in 1988, "The Alchemist" is a simple tale about a young shepherd who has a dream about finding treasure in the pyramids of Egypt. He sells his flock and begins a journey to fulfill that vision. He learns multiple lessons life lessons along the way, with an often quoted one being: "When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it."</p><p>"The beauty of this book is that no matter your background or experience, there is something to learn from reading it, and something different may resonate with you depending on your life circumstances," Cohen said.</p><p>The CFO says she's frequently turned to the book when making big life choices, such as the time she had to decide whether to take a job in the East Coast or one in Denver right after college. Rereading her favorite novel gave her the perspective to take the plunge and move to Denver, where she joined a tech company that eventually became ANGI Homeservices.</p><p>"As chance would have it, Denver became a very important part to both my personal growth and my professional growth," Cohen explained. "I eventually found a job at a small tech company that was trying to change the way people found and hired home pros. Now, that small company has become a much bigger company and my opportunities have grown along with it."</p><p>Cohen is not alone in praising the life lessons found in "The Alchemist." Oprah Winfrey <a href="http://www.oprah.com/inspiration/oprah-talks-to-the-alchemist-author-paulo-coelho/all#ixzz5tlllsH9m">writes</a>: "Though he doesn't consider himself a spiritual guide, Paulo Coelho has been one of my great teachers. I still keep 'The Alchemist' beside my bed and am always meeting others who do the same."</p><p>When Cohen recently reread the book, she realized that she had identified her own life purpose, and was firmly along the path to fulfilling it. </p><p>Two lessons from the book resonated with her when she read it this time around:</p><ol><li>How challenges along the path shaped her, and strengthened her personal resiliency (or fortitude).</li><li>The power of relationships and mentorships she's benefited from along the way, and the influence she has on others.</li></ol><p>Cohen has recommended this book to colleagues or friends who are struggling professionally to help them find their long-term purpose.</p><p>She recently recommended the book to a newer director at the company.</p><p>"She has a lot of opportunity ahead of her," Cohen shared, "but that is often very daunting. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://pixabay.com/en/love-couple-couples-in-love-1716825/">cuncon / Pixabay</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Some people have very <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/am-i-an-empath-2018-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">high levels of empathy</a>. </strong></li><li><strong>But if they take on everyone else's baggage all the time, it can lead to an "empathy burnout."</strong></li><li><strong>This is essentially like running out of fuel to care.</strong></li><li><strong>To stop this, they need to learn to be discerning and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-build-healthy-boundaries-2018-5?r=US&amp;IR=T" target="_blank" rel="noopener">build strong boundaries</a>.</strong></li><li><strong>As psychologists say, you can't honour someone else properly unless you honour yourself.</strong></li></ul><p><br />Empathy is a really great thing. It helps us become better people by understanding and relating to other people's emotions, and sympathise with what they are going through.</p><p>But if you are in tune with too many people's emotions too much of the time, you may experience "empathy burnout," which is when you get completely overwhelmed and exhausted by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-empaths-and-narcissists-are-attracted-to-each-other-2018-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">always taking on everyone else's baggage</a>.</p><p>"It's almost like another person's emotions or physical sensations even become contagious," Perpetua Neo, a doctor of psychology, told Business Insider. "We're talking about having an energetic boundary. There isn't one and you take it all on. If you get burnout, you tend to stop feeling so empathetic, and you can go the other way."</p><p>Empathy can become kryptonite, and it can start to cause you harm. But it can be a challenge to take a step back from it because people with high levels of empathy sometimes believe part of caring for others is suffering yourself.</p><p>This isn't true, and caring for others isn't synonymous with feeling pain. If you start to wear your empathy like a badge of honour, and blame your caring nature for every time you get hurt, Neo said it has essentially become your biggest burden.</p><p>"Really importantly, [people] don't ask themselves, 'who am I if I don't take on other peoples' pain?' Because it has become confused with their identity," she said.</p><p>"Perhaps they are seen as the listener of the group, the agony aunt of the group, and they don't know who they are without it. So they take all that bad stuff - the burnout, the contagion, all the pain, all the over-giving, and being around bad people - they think that is part of the price to pay."</p><p>Some people may over-give because they were taught to do this by their parents. For instance, some very religious communities are focused on giving until it hurts, Neo said. Or, in some cases, people might empathise to the extreme because they were <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/signs-friend-emotionally-abusive-relationship-2018-5?r=US&amp;IR=T" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in an abusive relationship</a>, or had <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/narcissists-cannot-love-their-children-2017-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">narcissistic parents</a>, and it's a habit they fell into to make the rage go away.</p><h2>Reining in your empathy can make it more powerful</h2><p>You can learn to use empathy as a superpower, Neo said, and the journey starts by being discerning. Sometimes people are irritating, or thoughtless, and it feels like they are dragging you down. Part of learning to use empathy effectively is recognising these facts and not beating yourself up over noticing them.</p><p>We are taught from a young age not to be judgmental of others. But there is always a limit, and judgment is actually essential for survival, according to Neo. Taking a step back from someone who is draining you of energy isn't selfish when you are starting to find their actions detrimental to yourself, she said.</p><p>"Paulo Coelho said 'we all have one foot in a fairytale, and the other in the abyss,' and I think that is essentially what our lives are about," said Neo. "You can judge what some people are about. Nobody is perfect and that's ok. Write down your worst thoughts. Be cool with that fact. It will help you to be discerning and that will help you shepherd and grow empathy in a way that suits you."</p><p>Having too much empathy can also mean you don't <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-build-healthy-boundaries-2018-5?r=US&amp;IR=T" target="_blank" rel="noopener">grow your boundaries</a> effectively. You let other people drain you because you haven't drawn a line in the sand which people can't cross. This is particularly important for those in caring professions, Neo said.</p><p>"So if you're a councilor, working as a nurse, working in a trauma centre, or if you are a listening ear in your friendship circle, you can end up having vicarious traumatisation, or what they call 'compassion fatigue,'" she said. "What's really important here is putting boundaries up for others. You need to choose to not take on somebody else's pain."</p><p>Otherwise you become a magnet for other people's stories, she said. Actually detaching yourself from them can make you a better listener, because you don't take on their pain, so you're not triggered by their story, and you don't confuse your own ethos and feelings with theirs.</p><p>"It doesn't mean you don't feel empathy, but it means you allow yourself to have that distance, and that actually makes you a wiser and better person," Neo said. "There is no shame in knowing that. When you can be detached sometimes, you model resilience for that person... If you honour yourself, you can honour somebody else better."</p><p>Essentially, you can be empathetic in a healthy way by saying to yourself: "This is how I want to live my life because this is what I don't want done to me." Neo said it means rather than the golden rule - "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" - there is a more shrewd way to approach life.</p><p>"How do you know what others want done to them?" she said. "I think more important is the silver rule: don't do unto others as you would not have them do unto you. Having too much empathy can lead us to burn out - but there are ways to use it as a superpower

The main centre-left Socialist Party and the more hardline Left Bloc each seem to have picked up seats, robbing Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho of his majority.</p><p>But that's still an impressive showing for the Portuguese right, coming after <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_legislative_election,_2015#/media/File:ElectionMonthlyAverageGraphPortugal2015.png">years of the Socialist Party leading by some distance in polls</a>.</p><p>The victory comes off the back of an improved economic climate. Unemployment has dropped fairly quickly over the last couple of years. It now sits below 12% for the first time since 2011, falling from over 17% in 2013. Portugal exited its own bailout programme in the middle of 2014.</p><p>That doesn't mean that everything's going well. Portugal's GDP was still 7.8% lower than it was at the end of 2007. The economy is depressed and a long way from its pre-crisis peak, especially in comparison to countries like the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword>, US and Germany.</p><p>What the election does show is how Europe's left is starting to flounder again, less than a year after Syriza's incredible election victory in Greece, when it seemed like there was a genuine radical moment beginning. </p><p>It's a similar picture for Portugal's larger neighbour. At that time, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_general_election,_2015#/media/File:SpainPollingSince2011Election.png">the 8-poll moving average was once above 25%</a>, beating both the country's major political parties. </p><p>It's a slightly less impressive showing now - the 8-poll average hasn't shown the party above 20% since the Spring, and the mainstream parties are more comfortably ahead.</p><p>Elections are coming later this year, and it looks like Prime Minister Rajoy may be able to build another centre-right coalition and cling to power. </p><p>In Greece, Syriza has returned to power, though their radical credentials are a little more questionable. By accepting the country's third bailout agreement in five years, they have been effectively neutered by the brutal fiscal <keyword id="6358883" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Politics">politics</keyword> of the Eurozone. They're now offering a fairer distribution of the tightening than the opposition would, which is little more than a different flavour of austerity. </p><p>The only major European countries where the left holds power are Italy and France, neither of which is exactly radical. The law named after President Francois Hollande's <a href="http://www.oecd.org/france/the-positive-effects-expected-from-the-macron-law-show-that-france-must-pursue-its-structural-reform-initiatives.htm">economy minister Emmanuel Macron</a> has liberalised the French labour market and retail regulations in a way more often favoured by right-leaning politicians.</p><p>Similarly, Matteo Renzi's push for labour market reform has made him no friends on the left. His r<a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/corbyn-bashing-goes-global-italian-prime-minister-matteo-renzi-just-called-the-new-labour-leader-an-amateur-2015-9">ecent attack on British Labour's Jeremy Corbyn</a> is pretty illustrative of his political attitudes. </p><p>After what happened to Syriza and Greece over a torturous six months, perhaps it's not too difficult to see why the parties of the left are struggling to explain their appeal.</p><p>If they defy austerity and take their case to their European partners, they get crushed and threatened with outright exit from the euro. Europe's left-wing moment is dying

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>If you've been on Facebook sometime in the last few weeks, you may have seen your friends posting lists of 10 books that have had an impact on them. </p>
<p>The introduction to the post goes something like this: "<span>List 10 books that have stayed with you in some way. Don't take more than a few minutes, and don't think too hard. They do not have to be the 'right' books or great works of literature, just ones that have affected you in some way." </span></p>
<p><span>Each person then shares 10 books and then challenges a few friends to do the same. </span></p>
<p>Now, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/notes/facebook-data-science/books-that-have-stayed-with-us/10152511240328859">thanks to data</a> from researchers Lada Adamic and Pinkesh Patel, we know which books Facebook users say have made a most memorable impact. To compile the list, Adamic and Patel analyzed 130,000 status updates that contained the words "10 books" or "ten books" and that were posted in the last two weeks of August 2014. </p>
<p>They also included a percentage that indicated just how many of the 130,000 lists included each of the books. </p>

The Books That Stay With Us Forever

<p>Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva has voiced support for the country's centre-right coalition government and rejected calls for snap elections to resolve a political crisis shaking the bailed-out nation.</p>
<p>"I think in the current context of national emergency, calling elections is not a solution for the problems <keyword id="6359079" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Portugal">Portugal</keyword> is facing," Cavaco Silva said Sunday.</p>
<p>"I think the best solution is to keep the current government in power."</p>
<p>His remarks came after crisis talks between Portugal's three main parties failed Friday to reach a pact on pursuing radical reforms to avoid a second international bailout, as Cavaco Silva had called for.</p>
<p>The president urged the two parties in the ruling coalition -- Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho's centre-right PSD and the conservative CDS-PP -- to work together to see through the reforms agreed under Portugal's 2011 bailout deal and enable the country to return to the international financial markets.</p>
<p>"It is important to show our European partners that Portugal is a governable country," Cavaco Silva said.</p>
<p>"The government has an undeniable majority."</p>
<p>The coalition between the two ruling parties gives the government a comfortable majority in parliament, but the alliance is at risk after the resignation early this month of finance minister Vitor Gaspar, the architect of the budget cuts, and foreign minister Paulo Portas, the CDS-PP leader and an increasingly sharp critic of austerity.</p>
<p>Their resignations plunged Portugal's politics into turmoil, casting doubt on the fate of the reforms agreed under the country's 78-billion-euro ($103-billion) rescue from the European Union and International Monetary Fund.</p>
<p>After the two key ministers' resignations, worries that Portugal would veer into a new crisis shook world markets fearful of a new wave of instability in the eurozone's debt-laden periphery.</p>
<p>Facing pressure from European partners and the financial markets, the prime minister's PSD party and Portas' Christian Democrats agreed to work to save their coalition majority.</p>
<p>They decided Portas should remain in the government, promoted to deputy prime minister in charge of economic policy.</p>
<p>The prime minister added that new Finance Minister Maria Luis Albuquerque would remain in place.</p>
<p>Portugal's austerity measures are widely blamed for exacerbating a three-year recession, and the resulting hardship has sparked growing street protests.</p>
<p>The country forecasts a 2.3-percent economic contraction this year, and has record unemployment of more than 18 percent.</p>
<p>Portugal's "troika" of international creditors -- the IMF, European Commission and European Central Bank -- have postponed their next review of the country's reform programme from mid-July to late August because of the ongoing political standoff.</p>

Make no mistake, this was an insanely determined, stubborn and remorseless innings from a man in his second Test, and who had been unfairly singled out by one English journalist earlier this month for wearing his faith on his chin.<br />

To bat 281 balls in any situation is a test of a player's skill and endurance. To do so in the final innings of a Test match, with defeat looming large, and bat out an entire final day's play suggests some sort of zen-like concentration. Since 2000, only Michael Vaughan batted more deliveries in the final innings of a Test match for England. Overall, on only 11 occasions did English batsmen face more deliveries than Moeen's 281 on day five at Leeds in the fourth innings.<br />
<br />
While at the same time on a different kind of sporting pitch in Brazil, footballer Luis Suarez displayed something bordering on a personality disorder, at Headingley Moeen was the embodiment about all that is good about an unflappable temperament. Whatever Sri Lanka threw at him, Moeen resisted. He left with assurance and played with a straight bat, keeping out deliveries on the stumps and swaying out of the short stuff. When Sri Lanka's quick bowlers conceived the policy of bowling wide of the left-hander's off stump to tempt him into impetuosity in the gully area, Moeen moved his front foot forward and head well across and resisted. How could you not be sucked in to this tussle?<br />

This is the beauty of Test cricket; that a five-day tussle between two teams can stretch the physical and mental reserves of 22 men. That scripts are written and re-written, plans dashed and predictions squashed.<br />
<br />
The result is a draw. On paper, no team won. But those with a fetish for the intricacies and nuances of the five-day game will have been touched by Moeen and Anderson's last-ditch alliance, an emotional journey between two contrasting players that has given us one of Test cricket's greatest rearguards. In this era of Twenty20 cricket, Tuesday's proceedings was one of the most satisfying results in recent years.<br />
<br />
These two Tests between England and Sri Lanka have whet the purist's appetite ahead of a marquee five-Test series between England and India starting in a few weeks time at Trent Bridge.
