Hauser." That's a shout out to Stan's good friend and fellow actor <keyword id="6507760" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Paul-Walter-Hauser">Paul Walter Hauser</keyword>. </p><div type="image" title="pw_hauser_falcon_and_the_winter_solider" height="561" width="1366" msid="83184824" hostid="261"></div>In a recent <a href="https://www.insider.com/paul-walter-hauser-cruella-critics-cobra-kai-2021-5">interview with Insider</a>, Hauser, who can currently be seen playing the scene-stealing Horace in "<keyword id="2385515" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cruella">Cruella</keyword>," reacted to being an Easter egg on the Disney Plus show, streaming now.<p>"It was a very funny surprise," Hauser said. "I did not expect that."</p><p>The actor said he called up Stan after seeing it and they both had a good laugh.</p><p>The two have been close since starring in the acclaimed 2017 movie "I, Tonya," which focused on the rise and fall of infamous figure skater Tonya Harding (played by Margot Robbie).</p><p>Stan played Harding's husband Jeff Gillooly and Hauser delivered a breakout performance as Gillooly's bumbling friend and later Harding's bodyguard, Shawn Eckardt. Harding, Gillooly, and Eckardt were connected to the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_Cobo_Arena_attack">1994 attack</a> on Harding's figure skating rival Nancy Kerrigan.</p><div type="image" title="i tonya neon" height="1695" width="3000" msid="83184827" hostid="261"></div>Hauser says since the two worked together, they have been looking for another project to team up on.<p>"We really want to do something together again, and it seems people out there want us to also," Hauser said. "We're spoiled though. We don't want to do anything else than something on the level of 'I, Tonya.'"</p><p>"We're looking at scripts. We're talking to our agents. We're both in with the same agency so we are telling them to find us a biopic or dark comedy where we can be the co-leads," he added.</p><p>Until that day comes, both actors are staying busy on other projects.</p><p>Stan is currently filming the upcoming Hulu series "<a href="https://www.insider.com/sebastian-stan-lily-james-tommy-lee-pamela-anderson-photos-2021-5">Pam &amp; Tommy,</a>" in which he plays rocker Tommy Lee opposite Lily James as Lee's one-time wife Pamela Anderson. Since then he's worked with Spike Lee twice ("BlacKKKlansman," "Da 5 Bloods"), received award season buzz for playing the lead in Clint Eastwood's "Richard Jewell," and portrayed the scene-stealer Stingray in "Cobra Kai."</p><p>Now Hauser is adding another trick to his bag: playing a memorable <keyword id="46161" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Disney">Disney</keyword> sidekick.</p><p>In "<a href="https://www.insider.com/disney-cruella-movie-review-2021-5">Cruella</a>," Hauser plays the lovable Horace, who along with Jasper (Joel Fry), are the loyal friends of Cruella de Vil (Emma Stone) in this origin story of the iconic Disney villain.</p><p>Insider spoke to Hauser about perfecting his British accent for the role, how he feels about critics' mixed reaction of "Cruella," his shock of being name dropped on "Falcon and the Winter Soldier," and if he'll ever return to "Cobra Kai."</p><div type="image" title="Paul Walter Hauser Taylor Jewell AP" height="1125" width="1500" msid="83066005" hostid="261"></div><h2>Hauser paid for his own dialect coach so he would have a good British accent going into his 'Cruella' audition</h2><p><strong>Jason Guerrasio: Going into the audition, were you concerned about how Horace has been portrayed in the past - that you were doing a bumbling sidekick role?</strong></p><p><strong>Paul Walter Hauser:</strong> In the hands of less talented people it could have been that slapstick sidekick forgettable caricature, but with people like [screenwriters] Dana Fox and Tony McNamara and all the people that worked on that screenplay, plus [director] Craig Gillespie and Emma Stone and Emma Thompson, it really does become a full course meal. They elevate everything they do so I knew I was in really good hands. </p><p>And, of course, it's also partially on me to show up with ideas, and different line reads, and improvisations. </p><p><strong>What do you think you brought to Horace that was beyond the script?</strong></p><p>Stealing <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001364/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0">Bob Hoskins</a> voice. </p><p><strong>Right. You based a lot of your Horace English accent on listening to the late great Bob Hoskins talk. So is that the first question after you get the role, "Paul, can you do an English accent?"</strong></p><p>Craig offered me the role and Disney was like, "We have to hear this dude do a British accent," so I went and dropped a couple hundred dollars for a dialect coach and worked on it ... Then Disney gave me a dialect coach out in London where we shot, a guy named Neil Swain, and I did some sessions with him. He got me from a C- to a B+/A-. </p><p>I did a few Bob Hoskins YouTube rabbit holes, but more than anything it was "Hook." I have his voice from "Hook" as Smee ingrained in my memory. To pull off the accent it was all about getting the little words down that the Cockney accent employs. And that can be tricky because you would do a take or two and then the dialect coach would pull you over and say, "Hey, out of two sentences you said these four words wrong." And you just think you're screwing up the whole thing. </p><div type="image" title="cruella paul walter hauser disney" height="731" width="1366" msid="83066007" hostid="261"></div><h2>Test screening audiences enjoyed Hauser in drag more than in a suit of armor</h2><p><strong>Did you, Joel, and Emma have any time before shooting to build up chemistry because the three of you really worked well.</strong></p><p>It was less prep and more that the three of us actually liked each other. When you like being around the other actor it makes working easier. </p><p>Part of that is the wardrobe and the blocking on camera, so I think the team effort of the crew made us look good.</p><p><strong>A standout Horace moment is when he's in drag at the party at the end of the movie, but originally you were to be in a suit of armor for that scene?</strong></p><p>It was in the script that I was in a suit of armor and then Craig had this idea of dressing me up and being in the scene in a unique way. </p><p><strong>Did you shoot the scene with you in the armor?</strong></p><p>We shot it, but Craig wanted to shoot it in drag also. And my rule is I want to give the editor options in case something doesn't work. So I was game to do it. We did test screenings with both versions to see which would work and I think the crazier of the two won out. </p><div type="image" title="Cruella Disney4" height="720" width="1280" msid="83066012" hostid="261"></div><h2>Hauser feels it's 'ridiculous' how nitpicky critics are about 'Cruella'</h2><p><strong>What's your feeling of how people are talking about this movie, especially critics. I saw you call out the <a href="https://twitter.com/PaulWHauser/status/1397657469124497415?s=20">Vanity Fair review on Twitter</a>. </strong></p><p>Richard Lawson at Vanity Fair, he's good at his job. I'm sure he's a good guy. I just read that review, it was one of maybe six reviews I read, and he was kind of having fun being mean spirited, sort of doing his word play instead of dissecting the film.</p><p>I just felt it was a cheap shot so I defended my movie. I think we made a great film, it may not be for everybody, but it does so many more things right than it does wrong. </p><p>If you feel you hated two things, but we did these five other things great, then you can't tell people not to see the movie. That's ridiculous. It's like me telling you not to eat at a restaurant because I didn't like the toilet paper in the bathroom and my waiter was unattractive. You would be like, "Um, how was the chicken?" So that's my whole take on film criticism. </p><p>People getting riled up that it's an edgy and dark movie: No, it's not. You're not watching dogs getting made into coats. It's an action-adventure-crime-comedy movie with a lot of heart and if you don't like Emma Stone and Emma Thompson you should probably get your pulse checked. </p><div type="image" title="pw_hauser_falcon_and_the_winter_solider" height="561" width="1366" msid="83066013" hostid="261"></div><h2>Hauser was shocked to find he was an Easter egg in 'Falcon and the Winter Soldier'</h2><p><strong>You are friends with Sebastian Stan since you two starred in "I, Tonya." Did he give you a head's up that your name was going to be on Bucky Barnes' list in the first episode of "<a href="https://www.insider.com/the-falcon-and-the-winter-soldier-marvel-details-references-easter-eggs">Falcon and the Winter Soldier</a>"?</strong></p><p>[<em>Laughs</em>.] No, he did not. It was a very funny surprise. I did not expect that. </p><p><strong>Did you talk to him after seeing it?</strong></p><p>Yeah, I hit him up and he was cracking up about it.</p><p>We have kept in touch since "I, Tonya" and hopefully we will find that next movie. We really want to do something together again, and it seems people out there want us to also. Do you think we'll see him on the show again?</strong></p><p>I love that show. I was on it in the YouTube days and then once it went to Netflix everyone realized how great it is, so I hope they bring me back. I think they will eventually, but it's such a large ensemble. </p><p><strong>Were you aware you weren't going to show up last season?</strong></p><p>There were conversations of how to put in Stingray, but I think it came down to the wire because they were prepping it at the same time I was heading out to shoot "Cruella," so it just wouldn't have worked out timing-wise. But maybe going forward there will be time to slip me back in there. </p><p><strong>What do you think Stingray is doing right now in the "Cobra Kai" universe?</strong></p><p>I'm sure he's looking for a job. He's in a bathrobe eating a danish and sitting in a family member's living room looking for jobs on the internet.</p><p><em>"Cruella" is in theaters and on Disney Plus now. He stole every scene he was in playing the bumbling bodyguard of disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding, who took part in the attack on Harding's rival, Nancy Kerrigan. He followed that by gaining "that guy" status showing up in movies like "BlacKkKlansman" and "Late Night," as well as TV series like "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" and "Cobra Kai."</p><p>But playing Richard Jewell is a life-changing moment for the actor. His biggest role to date is also smack dab in the middle of the award season. And Hauser should receive accolades, as his performance - mixed with emotion, humor, and frustration - is the lifeblood of the movie.</p><p>Business Insider talked with Hauser about getting the role (which actually wasn't that hard, Eastwood didn't even want him to audition), the research he did to play Jewell, and how improv with Sam Rockwell on set led to an explosive scene.</p><p><em>This interview has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p><strong>Jason Guerrasio:</strong> It sounds like you're in Thailand with Spike Lee making "Da 5 Bloods" and you get the call that Eastwood wants you for "Richard Jewell."</p><p><strong>Paul Walter Hauser:</strong> Yeah, I was entertaining a pretty lucrative TV deal and I get a call two days later while we're negotiating and they were like, "Hey, we don't have it all figured out but there's a verbal offer from Clint and his camp to star in his new film." And I was like, "What the hell are you talking about?"</p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> And it's not like, "Come in and read," the role is yours.</p><p><strong>Hauser:</strong> Correct. There's no audition. And I felt this is highly peculiar. [<em>Laughs</em>.] I basically had a couple of days to think it over and read the script. The TV people on that deal, they basically said, "You need to give us an answer." I grew up the son of a pastor and there's a thing in the Bible of you can operate out of fear or love, and love casts out fear, you don't have any fear if you have love. So I was thinking about it and I felt fear would tell me to take this money job on this TV show, love would tell me to try to see if this Clint Eastwood thing is real. I turned the TV deal down and then I was still in Thailand for three more weeks and the whole time I'm thinking, <em>did I just make the biggest mistake ever</em>? I think they all thought I was doing the right thing. There's no guarantee you are going to work with master filmmakers like Clint and Spike. And now that I have seen the film and the reception it has had, holy cow did I ever make the right decision. </p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> To dive into the character, was the research and prep similar to what you did with Shawn Eckardt for "I, Tonya"?</p><p><strong>Hauser:</strong> I would say it was the exact same amount of research. It was watching some footage, talking to some of the people who knew him. With Shawn Eckardt I tracked down the guy who turned him in to the FBI. </p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> Oh, wow.</p><p><strong>Hauser:</strong> I totally did it without telling anyone. But with Richard Jewell it was easier because Bobi Jewell (Richard's mother, played by Kathy Bates in the movie) and Watson Bryant (the attorney played by Sam Rockwell) literally flew out to Warner Bros. and had a three-hour meeting with us on the lot. I would say the harder part wasn't getting info, the harder part was just deciphering what to focus on for the sake of the actual story at hand. Even the voice I tempered a bit. I knew his voice was almost cartoonishly southern, so I had to meet in the middle and bring my own voice into it while still honoring Richard's voice. Hair and makeup was important. And also just loving other people. This guy had a big heart and he wasn't simple minded in wisdom and knowledge, he was simple in how he lived his life. I really didn't want to eat up the scenes, it wasn't like "BlacKkKlansman" where I was really going for it. I wanted you to feel like you had seen or met Richard in real life. </p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> Jonah Hill at one time was going to play this role.</p><p><strong>Hauser:</strong> Yes.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> He's still on the movie as a producer, did you want to reach out to him at all and talk shop about the role?</p><p><strong>Hauser:</strong> My whole life I have sort of done my own thing. I rarely ask permission, I sometimes ask forgiveness. So I really didn't consult with anyone outside of the source material and my own warped sense of creativity.<br /> <br /><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> Clint is known for working fast, when did you feel you got into a groove?</p><p><strong>Hauser:</strong> I think that second or third week. The first week is always tough. Everybody is trying to find their sea legs. Early on, we shot a scene where Kathy brings the pound cake out and I'm picking at it before I go out to work at the park. That scene was maybe the first scene where I was like, "This is good, I like the beats I'm taking." I think the best acting is when you just see the thoughts on a character's face. </p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> You have so much time with Sam Rockwell in this movie, how important was it to have someone to act across from consistently?</p><p><strong>Hauser:</strong> I think my best acting is always when I have one or two people to get really intimate and friendly with off set and bring that relationship on set. So I think working with Sam was an example of when you really get into one another and become friends you probably make the work better. That's my process. </p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> So you and Sam hit it off before cameras started rolling?</p><p><strong>Hauser:</strong> Absolutely. It was a combination of embracing our sense of humor and who we actually are. And that helped in trusting one another to improvise mid-scene.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> The one scene I think of a lot is Sam digging at you in the living room after all the media attention and FBI visits, and finally you explode and get really angry. Is that an example of trusting one another with improv?</p><p><strong>Hauser:</strong> That scene was crazy because there was a scripted version and we did it but it wasn't feeling exactly right. We weren't sure how to make that scene work, but we knew there had to be a moment where I broke. So we did a couple of versions and in between we were literally doing it fully improvised. What you see on screen in that scene is half improv, half scripted. Me breaking the cookie jar lid, that was something I told our camera operator, Stephen Campanelli, "I'm going to break this lid, we only have one of these jars, so on the last take make sure you get it." So we just tried to find it in the moment. I walked away feeling deeply insecure that the scene didn't work. But I watched the edit and Joel Cox, Clint's longtime editor, really did it right. </p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> Through this whole time, filming, doing press, have you ever grabbed Clint and asked him, "Why me?"</p><p><strong>Hauser:</strong> I never posed it to him in that exact way but there have been moments where I have thanked him and he ushers the thank you away. Me, Sam, and Olivia [Wilde, who plays the reporter who gets the story that Jewell was a suspect] wrapped out on the last night and the crew clapped as they told us it was a wrap and I just balled my eyes out. I just realized I had this moment of working with some of my heroes. It was very emotional. Clint gave me a big hug and said, "This movie wouldn't have happened without you." I just blubbered. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Warning: There are minor spoilers ahead for <keyword id="46161" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Disney">Disney</keyword>'s live-action "<keyword id="2385515" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cruella">Cruella</keyword>."</li><li><keyword id="231394" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Emma-Stone">Emma Stone</keyword> is perfect as a young Cruella de Vil.</li><li>The film is bogged down by backstory, which could've been clipped to get to the good stuff.</li></ul><p>"<a href="http://insider.com/category/cruella">Cruella</a>" is neither a flop people will love to hate nor is it a surprising masterpiece that some who saw it early have proclaimed.</p><p>Filled with great performances from Emma Stone and Emma Thompson, it's steps above Disney Plus release "<a href="https://www.insider.com/lady-and-the-tramp-remake-review-2019-10">Lady and the Tramp</a>," but not as good as the Angelina Jolie-led "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/maleficent-reviews-2014-5">Maleficent</a>." </p><p>In other words, it's one of the better Disney <a href="https://www.insider.com/disney-live-action-remakes-2017-2">live-action remakes</a>. </p><p>The live-action "101 Dalmatians" prequel rewinds the clock back to when Cruella (then Estella) was born to show viewers how she wound up as the puppy-skinning fashion icon of the Disney universe. She finds herself thrown into the fashion world studying under the esteemed Baroness Von Hellman (Emma Thompson) who goes from her idol to fashion rival to, without giving too much away, being more important to Cruella than she realizes.</p><div type="image" title="emma stone cruella" height="2000" width="3000" msid="83061436" hostid="261"></div><p>"Cruella" is at least half an hour too long with a twist that's a bit predictable. Still, it's a <keyword id="6356021" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="movie">movie</keyword> you can't stop watching because you want to see Stone make her big entrance as the Queen of Mean as teased in <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmRKv7n2If8">trailer</a> after <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpZrVxvG3mk">trailer</a>. </p><p>Spending far too much time in Cruella's childhood, the film hints at a split personality or possible disorder that's never diagnosed or fully dissected. When it is discussed, it's briefly as a fleeting concern from a friend who says they liked the old Estella, but then continues to support Cruella. It feels like a bit of a waste when the film could have had a larger conversation around this topic during Mental Health Awareness month. </p><p>When Stone finally enters the scene as Cruella (about 50 minutes later), you don't want to take your eyes off her. She slips into the role and the film really starts to pick up. You can tell the actress enjoyed placing an extra emphasis every time she said the word "Darling" (a favorite expression of the Disney character). And the <a href="https://youtu.be/DbOAa7Tbil0?t=47">iconic Cruella</a> <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUqHKaa6MB4">laugh</a>? Chills. Stone masters it.</p><p>While you'll learn how Cruella received her moniker and her loyal cronies, Horace and Jasper (a very well cast Paul Walter Hauser and Joel Fry, respectively, who feel like cartoon characters stepping right out of their animation cels), we never learn what led the Disney villain down the path of skinning puppy fur for fashion. Curiously, this Cruella doesn't give off puppy murder vibes.  </p><div type="image" title="cruella horace jasper" height="2000" width="3000" msid="83061438" hostid="261"></div><p>Though a reference to the animated character's fur-shearing is made, this Cruella doesn't hate dogs. She's given a good reason to hate Dalmatians, but eventually appears to warm up to them.</p><p>It's unclear if Disney is rewriting history to change its villain or if the studio's leaving something open for a potential sequel. (Yes, this film sets up a live-action "101 Dalmatians" sequel because at this point Disney's in the potential franchise game.) </p><p>Other than Stone, the main stars of "Cruella" are Thompson, the unexpectedly adorable dogs, and the film's fashion. </p><p>Much of this film plays like a version of the 2006 20th Century Fox film (now owned by Disney) "The Devil wears Prada," right down to a young woman (Estella) landing a dream job and getting noticed by the woman in charge (Thompson). Not to mention Thompson captivates as a dead ringer for Meryl Streep's cold and calculating Miranda.</p><div type="image" title="cruella emma thompson baroness" height="2000" width="3000" msid="83061440" hostid="261"></div><p>Costume designer Jenny Beavan created several creative and stunning fashion moments, including a memorable one involving a transformative dress and an extremely fun "Where's Waldo?" moment.</p><p>According to the film's production notes, Stone had 47 costume changes while Thompson had 33.</p><div type="image" title="cruella red dress" height="2000" width="3000" msid="83061442" hostid="261"></div><p>The film should be a shoo-in for best costume design at the Oscars.</p><div type="image" title="cruella fashion moment" height="400" width="800" msid="83061446" hostid="261"></div><p>Also, the addition of a few new dogs to the "101 Dalmatians" universe, Wink and Buddy, will become instant hits with kids. Wink, a one-eyed chihuahua has a few scene-stealing moments, while according to the film's production notes, the lead canine, Buddy, is a rescue dog that was found on the street. </p><p>Despite those highlights, "Cruella" feels like it's been done before. When the first trailer arrived it was hailed as <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2021/2/17/22287149/cruella-trailer-disney-emma-stone-live-action-101-dalmations">Disney's "Joker."</a> Still, Stone told British magazine, Total Film, the film is "<a href="https://io9.gizmodo.com/cruella-isnt-the-same-as-joker-according-to-emma-stone-1846586735">very different</a>" than Warner Bros.' Oscar-winning comic-book movie. </p><p>Any comparison would have been a bit easier to dismiss if "Cruella" didn't use a version of the song "Smile" at a pivotal moment.</p><p>Nat King Cole's cover of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjRFQcBT3-E">the song</a> was heavily used in marketing WB's villain origin film about the mental breakdown of one man into Batman's greatest foe. Here, Disney uses Judy Garland's <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbV9-bJAZgU">version of the song</a> as Cruella is at her lowest moment. </p><div type="image" title="cruella sad defeated emma stone" height="1620" width="3000" msid="83061447" hostid="261"></div><p>To put it succinctly, we didn't need "Cruella," a film celebrating Disney's notorious puppy killer, especially if the film is going to skirt around the very thing that defined the villain and if "Cruella" is going to aim to be some lesser "Joker" or Harley Quinn without fully exploring its character's mental health.</p><p>Though enjoyable (once you get past the first 30 or so minutes), it's definitely not worth a $29.99 rental on Disney Plus to rush and see. You can wait a few months until it's on the streamer free of charge. </p><p><em>"Cruella" is also in theaters May 28.</em></p>

In 2017, "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" opened the week after "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" and enjoyed a strong box office through the new year, ending with close to $1 billion earned at the global box office.</p><p>Starting a week before "Star Wars" this time around shows that Sony is confident its franchise can go up against one of the biggest earners of them all. We won't know until January if "Jumanji" can hold its own, but this weekend's performance does show the potential for a fun showdown in the weeks to come.</p><p>Over at Warner Bros., one of its longtime reliable performers didn't come through this weekend as Clint Eastwood's "Richard Jewell" failed to find an audience.</p><p>The dramatic look back at the man who saved thousands when a bomb went off during the 1996 Summer Olympics and was later a suspect (he finally was cleared of any wrongdoing), only took in $5 million over the weekend. </p><p>That's the first time an Eastwood-directed movie hasn't earned at least $10 million at the domestic box office since 2010's "Hereafter," starring Matt Damon.</p><p>Though "Richard Jewell" features top-flight performances from Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates, and Paul Walter Hauser as Jewell, the movie has been shrouded in controversy as it claims the reporter (played by Olivia Wilde) at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution who broke the story that Jewell was a suspect of the FBI slept with an agent (played by Jon Hamm) in exchange for the information. The paper claimed that never happened and before the movie's release it <a href="https://variety.com/2019/film/news/clint-eastwood-richard-jewell-kathy-scruggs-1203429660/">demanded Warner Bros. place a disclaimer</a> regarding the reporter.</p><p>Regardless if that affected folks from going to see the movie, "Jewell" is a disappointment for Eastwood (the movie was <a href="https://deadline.com/2019/12/jumanji-the-next-level-richard-jewell-black-christmas-opening-weekend-box-office-1202808689/">projected to make</a> at least $10 million) and for a studio that has had a rough go of it this year. </p><p>Though Warner Bros. saw a huge return with "Joker" and "Shazam!," it had a lot more busts: "Shaft," "The Good Liar," "The Kitchen," "Doctor Sleep," and "The Goldfinch."</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5dee7ed5fd9db26a83383293-992/uncut%20gems%20a24.jpg" alt="Uncut Gems A24" /><p class="source"><span>A24</span></p><p class="caption">"Uncut Gems."</p><h2>Box office highlights:</h2><ul><li>A24's "Uncut Gems" brought in $525,000 on five screens, with a $105,000 per screen average. 'Jumanji: The Next Level' opens with a powerful $60 million, while 'Richard Jewell' marks an almost decade low earning for Clint Eastwood

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59b4152445e2381e008b6225-926/i tonya toronto international film festival.jpg" alt="i tonya toronto international film festival" data-mce-source="Toronto International Film Festival" /><p class="source"><span>Toronto International Film Festival</span></p><p class="caption">"I, Tonya."</p></div><p></p></div></div>In a year where a lot of the hyped titles playing at the Toronto International Film Festival have already premiered at Telluride or Venice, "I, Tonya" is one title TIFF can claim as its own.</p><p>The dark, twisted, and hilarious look at the rise and fall of US Olympic figure-skater Tonya Harding had its world premiere at the fest on Friday, and with no distribution in place, the movie has buyers scrambling to nab it.</p><p>Margot Robbie plays the disgraced skater in a performance that is the best of her career to this point.</p><p>Though Harding's claim to fame should be as the first American woman to land a triple axel in competition, what she's really known for is being the center of one of the biggest scandals in US sports history when her rival, US figure-skater Nancy Kerrigan, was attacked leading up to the 1994 Winter Olympics. Later on, it was discovered that Harding's ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, hired someone to assault Kerrigan.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59b4188645e23852008b6255-1048/tonya harding jeff gillooly ap.jpg" alt="Tonya Harding Jeff Gillooly AP" data-mce-source="AP" /><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p><p class="caption">Tonya Harding and Jeff Gillooly during the scandal in 1994.</p></div><p></p></div></div>But "I, Tonya," directed by Craig Gillespie ("Lars and the Real Girl," "The Finest Hours"), doesn't only focus on the scandal that became a pop-culture obsession in the mid-1990s. To tell the story right, you have to delve deeper into Harding's life and that's just what Gillespie and screenwriter Steven Rogers did.</p><p>Pushed to be a figure-skater by her mother (played by Allison Janney) at 3, Harding knew two things growing up, skating on the ice and being abused.</p><p>There's a lot to laugh about and get nostalgic over in "I, Tonya," but at its core it's a story about a woman who has been mentally and physically abused by everyone who has ever been in her life.</p><p>By 15, Harding moves from the slaps and shoves of her mother to go live with Gillooly (Sebastian Stan), and things don't get better. He beats her constantly, which doesn't stop Harding from marrying the guy.</p><p>Through all of this, Harding rises through the ranks of US figure-skating, and because of her ability to land the triple axel, becomes an elite skater. Which is even more remarkable in a sport like figure skating - where privilege and a wholesome image is a necessity - Harding did it all dirt poor and never making nice with anyone.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59b419c045e23820008b61a9-1066/margot robbie maarten de boer getty.jpg" alt="Margot Robbie Maarten de Boer Getty" data-mce-source="Maarten de Boer/Getty" /><p class="source"><span>Maarten de Boer/Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Margot Robbie.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Robbie (who is also a producer on the movie) captures the rough Harding persona and delivers a performance which is at times heart-achingly real and at others masterfully comedic. From her hair to her loud outfits, Robbie is everything that made you love Harding if you lived through the time when she was one of the most recognizable people on the planet.</p><p>And then there's the supporting cast that only makes Robbie and the movie better. Stan as the mustached Gillooly is the perfect villain. And Paul Walter Hauser, who plays Gillooly's friend and Harding's "bodyguard" Shawn Eckhardt, is a hilarious scene stealer. But it's Janney as Harding's unforgiving mother that's the most remarkable. She plays her ruthless and never gives the character the slightest hint of compassion towards Harding.</p><p>The movie has top notch make-up and costume design as it goes through the decades of Harding's life and jumps forward to present day with the characters giving interviews looking back on the events. This style gives the movie one of its most memorable moments, when present day Harding looks into the camera and describes the pain she feels being the punching bag of the media and public. They being her latest abuser. And how this movie, and we the audience enjoying her messed up life, are now her current abuser.  </p><p>If there's one knock on the movie, the poor CGI for the skating scenes makes it obvious Robbie isn't doing most of the skating. But, no one was expecting her to learn the triple axel for the role.</p><p>With "I, Tonya" having no distribution at the time of this writing, it's hard to forecast what's in store for it.
