The govt body to ensure safety standard of food in India has asked magi to “furnish progress reports on the recall process on a daily basis thereafter till the process is completed." 
 
Not only so. Nestle has also been asked to "withdraw and recall all the 9 approved variants of its Maggi Instant Noodles from the market. Having been found unsafe and hazardous for human consumption, and stop further production, processing, import, distribution and sale of the said product with immediate effect." 
 
As per a news report in The Economic Times, FSSAI has stated, "Three major violations have been noted (a) presence of Lead detected in the product in excess of the maximum permissible levels of 2.5 ppm, (b) misleading labelling information on the package reading "No added MSG", and (c)release of a non-standardised food product in the market, viz. "Maggi Oats Masala Noodles with Tastemaker" without risk assessment and grant of product approval." 
 Meanwhile, Nestle's <keyword id="203686" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-CEO">global CEO</keyword> <keyword id="225478" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paul-Bulcke">Paul Bulcke</keyword> on Friday said that Maggi noodles are safe for consumption. Bulcke said, "We withdrew the product from shelves because consumers' trust was shaken. We want Maggi noodles back on shelves as soon as possible."

FSSAI gets stricter: 9 variants of Maggi unsafe, 'No added MSG' is misleading

<keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> chief <keyword id="225478" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Paul-Bulcke">Paul Bulcke</keyword> said he has learnt good lessons from India's ban on the firm’s hugely popular <keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword> noodles over a <keyword id="6467758" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="health-risk">health risk</keyword> and is now working to restore its image. He insisted that Maggi was 100% safe. 

	Bulcke further said that the packaged food was unfairly fingered by many around the world as a health scare, reported AFP. 
 

	The Switzerland-based food giant's reputation took a bashing "because it's a big brand and that (ban) made a lot of waves," the Belgian chief executive told AFP in an interview.
 On June 5, India's <keyword id="109212" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Food-Safety">food safety</keyword> regulator banned Maggi as tests showed that the noodles contained excessive amount of lead which is hazardous for health. 

	The largest food company by revenues is now challenging the order and is in the process of destroying over 27,000 tonnes of Maggi noodles after halting production.
 

	There were reports that Nestle India has decided to destroy the recalled Maggi noodle stocks at cement plants nationwide.
 

	According to the company, the ban had led to $50.5 million worth of goods being withdrawn. 
 Nestle had already announced it was pulling the product from sale when the Food Safety and <keyword id="179673" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Standards-Authority-of-India">Standards Authority of India</keyword> imposed a ban following similar moves by some state governments. 

	"One can have facts on one's side but it's the perception that counts. Food has never been safer. But there is this perception and we have to work on that. We have to reconnect with consumers," he told the news agency. 
 According to <keyword id="130196" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Brand-Finance">Brand Finance</keyword>, a consultancy firm, Maggi is set to lose over $200 million in brand value following the setback in India. 

	Maggi was previously valued at $2.4 billion, Brand Finance said, adding that it had ranked the noodle manufacturer as the 23rd most valuable food brand in the world.
 

	"The only thing that interests me is to have the product back as soon as possible and that things are cleared up," said Bulcke, who took over as Nestle's chief executive in 2008.
 

	"We are doing all we can to make contact with Indian authorities at the earliest," he said.
 

	Nestle notched up sales of $14.4 billion in ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook meals last year, the third most profitable sector for the company after soft drinks and milk products and ice cream.

Nestle chief working to restore company’s image after Maggi ban

After days of uncertainty and plummeting stocks, Nestle finally broke its silence on Friday and said Maggi was safe but still it withdrew the two-minute noodles from the markets citing that customers' faith was shaken. 
 
Nestle's global CEO Paul Bulcke said that they wanted Maggi noodles back on shelves as soon as possible, adding that they would look into the safety concerns, dismissing that they added MSG in the popular-snack. 
 
On the concerns of presence of lead beyond permissible limits, Bulcke said that the lead came from natural resources, like water, air, through which Maggi was made in India. 
 Regarding presence of MSG, the global CEO said they never added <keyword id="1836492" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Monosodium-Glutamate">Monosodium Glutamate</keyword> (MSG) in Maggi and it was through environment and contact of other products, the glutamate was seeping in the packages. 
 
Nestle said in a statement that recent developments and unfounded concerns about the product led to an environment of confusion for the consumer. 
 
Although he said that according to tests conducted by them, the product was safe, he did not deny for any third party testing. 
 
“We are conducting independent third party tests on of Maggi noodles. We are confident that Maggi noodles will be back as soon as possible," he said. 
 
Nestle is withdrawing Maggi from sale in India citing "an environment of confusion for consumers". A food scare was also triggered over a domestic regulator's report that some packs of the popular snack contained excess lead. 
 
Over six states have banned Maggi noodles, Tamil Nadu becoming the first state.

Paul Bulcke, global CEO of <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> SA, has said that their India unit is recuperating at an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/It-will-take-Nestle-3-years-to-undo-the-Maggi-damage-in-India/articleshow/51120095.cms">unexpectedly faster rate</a> after the setback prompted by <keyword id="2878534" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="maggi-ban">Maggi ban</keyword> last. The ban had resulted in Maggi, Nestle’s flagship product in India, being off the shelves for five months. 
 
"India is recovering faster than anticipated, although it still weighed on the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Dynamics-have-changed-as-Indians-now-prefer-Amul-Mother-Dairy-over-Nestle-PepsiCo/articleshow/51790812.cms">Asia zone's overall performance</a>. In India, the Maggi noodles business gained back market share but the business results were affected by the unfavourable comparatives," Bulcke said while addressing investors after the company's Q1 earnings reports. Nestle follows a calendar financial year of January-December. 
 
Nestle performed the strongest in European and South East Asian markets, as well as in Africa. Organic growth for the Asia, Africa, Oceania (AOA) zone, which Nestle takes as a combined entity in earnings, was 2.1% as compared to 0.5% in the last quarter. 
 
Even though Maggi has regained its market share and has re-established itself as the leader of the noodles segment, the share is significantly lower than what it had before it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Exclusive-Nestle-India-CEO-admits-Maggi-ban-was-the-resultof-a-major-breakdown-in-communication-with-the-Govt/articleshow/49889701.cms">faced the ban</a> in last June. The Food Safety &amp; Standards Authority India (FSSAI) had banned Maggi after it was found that it contained <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Maggi-is-in-trouble-again/articleshow/51344594.cms">more than permissible amount of lead</a>, along with mislabelling of flavour enhancer monosodium glutamate (MSG). 
 
It was only after multiple clearances, first by the Bombay High Court then by government labs, that Nestle was allowed to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/India-food-authority-challenges-lifting-ban-on-Nestles-Maggi/articleshow/49814787.cms">resume the sales</a> of Maggi noodles in November.

Nestle CEO says Maggi is recovering faster than expected after a five-month hitch

There are no Nestlé factories in the three countries where the outbreak is concentrated, but neighboring Ivory Coast is the source of 40% of the world's cocoa supply. Ghana, just to the east, is where the company's central and west African unit is headed. 
Bulcke also said he expects a rough fourth quarter for the company (in part, but not entirely because of, Ebola in West Africa)
Nestlé donated 100,000 Swiss francs to help fight Ebola earlier this week, as part of a <a href="http://www.newsweek.com/multi-billion-dollar-cocoa-industry-gives-600000-fight-ebola-277748">larger $600,000 donation</a> by the World Cocoa Foundation, which also includes companies like Hershey, Mars, and Ghirardelli.
Cocoa prices have risen a little over 15% since October of last year. They spiked in September, ostensibly over Ebola fears, but have since came back down to early September levels.

Nestle is destroying &#163;32 million worth of its most popular noodles

<keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword>’s executives in India are probably undergoing the most stressful phase in their work life. With crisis building up, they have been victim of no leave and unsocial family life off late, all thanks to its above standard content of lead. 
 "I haven't slept for more than two hours in the past fortnight," rued a <keyword id="2891004" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="midlevel-executive">midlevel executive</keyword>. "It's been all about nonstop work, plant visits, meetings, tests, future strategies, decisions. Worse, we don't know what will happen tomorrow," he told The Economic Times, speaking on the condition of anonymity. 
 As per a news report in the ET, 7,000 employees, including those working at its five noodles plants in Moga, Pantnagar, Nanjangud, Bicholin and Tahliwal had the nightmare on April 30. That was when a 1998-batch food inspector by the name of Sanjay Singh in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki town turned the food giant's world upside down. As things moved from bad to worse and Nestle's nightmare snowballed into one of the biggest controversies of the year, Nestle had to press in its entire team into firefighting. It has flown in <keyword id="306047" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-chief-executive">global chief executive</keyword> Paul Bulcke and executives from across the world, including longest-serving brand head <keyword id="320433" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shivani-Hegde">Shivani Hegde</keyword> from Sri Lanka, to manage the crisis. In India, it cancelled leaves of all employees and they have been putting in almost 20-hour work days. 
 Few of the facts are in public domain. Nestle, known for being one of the most media-shy companies in the consumer-goods space, sent out text invites for its only media briefing since the mega controversy broke out, postmidnight Thursday, according to the ET. The conference was at 12 noon on Friday, and there wasn't even enough time to send out email invites. Public relations agency Text 100 was given the mandate to organise the conference. The statement announcing the voluntary recall of <keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword> noodles was also mailed by Nestle's communications team at the unearthly 12.54 am, to be exact. Enough proof that Nestle India, maker of the once popular Maggi noodles, is working 24X7. 
 
 The firefighting had begun on all fronts, but a little late. "The company's reticence in the face of the mounting controversy is surprising. Its press conference came 16 days after the news broke on UP FDA's findings. 16 days is an eternity in an age of social media," financial services firm Kotak Institutional <keyword id="45369" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="equities">Equities</keyword> wrote in a consumer note dated June 5. The issue "appears to have surpassed all recent food-safety controversies involving well-known brands (worms in Cadbury Dairy Milk, pesticides in Coke/Pepsi). The company's automated twitter responses have done little to assuage consumer fears. Consumer confidence is seriously dented and the company's strategy of calling its consumers 'confused' (and basing its voluntary recall of the product on this 'confusion') does further damage," the report said. 
 "Nestle underestimated the impact of the controversy in the initial days. They were, in a sense, caught completely <keyword id="196983" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="off-guard">off-guard</keyword>. By the time they decided to act, the fire had <keyword id="54921" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="spread">spread</keyword> wild," a top communications expert told the financial daily. 
 At the press briefing which Bulcke, India <keyword id="6364480" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chairman">chairman</keyword> <keyword id="1685339" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Etienne-Benet">Etienne Benet</keyword> and Hegde hosted, the mood went from defensive to almost defiant. "We were waiting for internal investigation results," Bulcke said, when he was asked about the long delay in acknowledging and addressing the issue. 
 
Nestle is also not commenting on lobbying firm Apco being given the mandate to douse the Maggi fire. Apco, which managed PR for Vibrant Gujarat, too, isn't talking. But executives in the know said the first priority is getting the government on their side, which it believes will lead to restoring consumer confidence. 
 
Nestle employees have been told not to talk to anyone - not even to trade partners - unless approved by the legal team. Those working in plants have been told not to go on leave as every product is being tested and re-tested several times, people involved with the company said. 
The company, whose market cap has lost 15% (Rs 10,300 crore), over the past one week, will take a hit of about 7% in sales because of the Maggi recall. 
 Maggi is a Rs 2,000-crore brand, the biggest in the company's portfolio, and Nestle could lose Rs 180 crore in monthly sales until the product is back on shelves, said Abneesh Roy, an <keyword id="2891003" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="analyst-and-associate-director">analyst and associate director</keyword> at Edelweiss Securities. 
 The Maggi fire has burnt rivals too, which are looking at the controversy grudgingly. Sales of the entire noodles category are down by close to 80% in the country - the fifth largest instant noodles market in the world. Retailers like Savemax have removed all <keyword id="6354298" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="stocks">stocks</keyword> of other Maggi products like ketchup too, which were giving noodles for free as promotions. 
 
In 2014, the domestic instant noodle market was valued at Rs 3,800 crore, with value growth of 7.4% and volume growth of 2.9%.

<keyword id="2884150" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yudhvir-Singh-Malik">Yudhvir Singh Malik</keyword>, the CEO of <keyword id="109212" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Food-Safety">Food Safety</keyword> and <keyword id="1713626" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Standard-Authority-of-India">Standard Authority of India</keyword> (<keyword id="154680" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="FSSAI">FSSAI</keyword>), a Haryana cadre IAS officer from the 1983 batch, is the man who took over the list of hundreds of products rejected since 2012 and posted it on the FSSAI website in April this year. 
 On June 4, a team led by <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> CEO <keyword id="225478" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paul-Bulcke">Paul Bulcke</keyword> met government officials including Malik and health secretary BP Sharma. Nestle tried hard to convince FSSAI official that Maggi was safe to consume, but FSSAI, which played a major role in this controversy, lashed out the Swiss multinational food and beverage company and imposed a ban on the product. This information was revealed in an Economic Times report. 
 The decision, however, has been challenged by the <keyword id="34523" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg">FMCG</keyword> giant Nestle in <keyword id="48485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bombay-high-court">Bombay High Court</keyword>. 
 
Yudhvir Singh Malik, considered as a tough taskmaster by his FSSAI colleagues, is the man who assumed charge in October 2014 and just after that FSSAI’s various meetings with overseas delegations have acquired the status of formal engagements. And inter-ministerial meetings have been taking place more frequently, owing to which the office of the regulator has acquired a new energy. 
 
According to Malik’s colleague, "The order issued against Nestle -which reasons out the problems, explains Nestle's grounds of defence and logically details why it is not acceptable -has his (Malik’s) stamp all over. I am sure that he has personally drafted it word by word." 
 
As mentioned in the financial daily, it was after Malik took over the list of hundreds of products rejected since 2012 was drawn up; it was posted on the FSSAI website in April. A clearer regulatory pathway for product approval is being drawn up. A recall mechanism for defective food, drafted in large parts in 2011, has been sent to the World Trade Organisation for its comments and inputs from member countries. 
 
Malik has inherited several labeling wrangles from his predecessors, mostly starting in 2013. These include disputes with imported chocolate brands such as Godiva, Guylian, Lindt and Mars besides liquor makers such as Diageo and Pernod Ricard. 
 
Last month, Malik told stakeholders that it would be unfair to draw a parallel between India's food regulatory t system and those of the US and the European Union (EU) because consumer awareness is higher in those markets. 
 
Besides this, more responsive legal systems overseas compel industry to self-regulate. He also said that Indian consumers tend to be less skeptical than those in more mature markets.

After the two-minute noodles was banned in India over excess lead content and MSG in it, Nestle India has started working hard to come up with a snack that would replace Maggi till it is repositioned. 
 
"With no clarity over when Maggi in its existing form will be back on shelves, Nestle is working on alternate snacking options," one of two persons who confirmed the development told Economic Times, adding “Snacking is a huge opportunity which Nestle doesn't want to vacate, and it already has an existing backend for the culinary business." 
 
While re-launching Maggi could take several months, Nestle India might launch a ready-to-eat or ready-to-cook food. 
 
Nestle was guarded in its response to ET's queries. "We are working hard to resolve the situation and we aim to be back in the market as soon as we can. Adhering to Nestle's rigorous quality policies and testing protocol, we are confident that we will come back soon, ensuring food safety, as we always do," the Nestle spokesperson told the financial daily. 
 
Maggi noodles accounts for a third of Nestle India’s business with sales of over Rs 2,000 crore. 
 
Due to the ban, the plants in Punjab, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Goa and Himachal Pradesh are suspended. 
 
Meanwhile, Nestle India is working together to re-build the brand. Nestle Global Chief Executive Paul Bulcke said that the Maggi products were completely safe and were re-called as consumers faith had shaken. 
 
"Food has never been safer. But there is this perception and we have to work on that. The only thing that interests me is to have the product back as soon as possible and that things are cleared up," he told news agency AFP. 
 
"Any health concerns raised by a credible source such as FSSAI will most certainly damage customer loyalty and consideration of a food brand," said David Haigh, CEO of the London-based brand valuation consultancy.
