He was charged with paying $2 million cash bribes to the President of Chad, and according to evidence presented at the trial arranged to have payments of $500,000 transfer ed to officials in Uganda.Ho was acquitted of the Chad money-laundering charge, but convicted on all others by a jury that only deliberated for a few hours on Wednesday afternoon, New York time, according to the Post.</div></div>A high-profile politician, musician, Harvard graduate, ophthalmologist, and arts lover, he married Sibelle Hu a famous Taiwan-born actress, and led a rich, extraordinary life that in lots of ways reflected the turbulence of post-colonial Hong Kong.Already a noted eye surgeon, according to the Post, it is commonly thought that Ho got his leg up into Hong Kong politics after performing surgery on top Chinese Communist Party leaders. Ho moved up the political ladder quickly, emerging as the city-state's Home Affairs minister in 2002, a role he kept for almost five years through to 2007. Ho assumed a highly visible role in Hong Kong's desperate days during the SARS crisis, when over 200 people died from the mysterious virus that gripped China, and most particularly Hong Kong.<div data-v-99ed41dc="">He moved to the US to pursue a career as a surgeon, but threw himself into his other passion, music, where he became a noted violinist. Following his life in politics, Ho took over as a deputy secretary general in a think tank financed by CEFC."According to evidence presented at trial, Ho was involved in two bribery schemes to pay top officials of Chad and Uganda in exchange for business advantages for CEFC China, a Shanghai-based multibillion-dollar conglomerate that operates internationally in multiple sectors, including oil, gas, and banking," the DOJ explained in a press release. Giant of Hong Kong public life convicted of corruption in New York and faces jail time

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Warning: There are spoilers ahead for "<a href="https://trk.hbomax.com/aff_c?offer_id=5&amp;aff_id=1012" rel="nofollow sponsored">Harley Quinn</a>" season three.</li><li>Insider spoke with co-showrunners Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern about the show's HBO Max return.</li></ul>"<a href="https://insider.com/category/harley-quinn">Harley Quinn</a>" co-creators Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern were a bit worried about the animated series' chances of getting a third series on HBO Max."It was a very painful wait for us because the ink wasn't dry yet. We were sitting there for what felt like six months or something before it was officially announced, but we did know. We just couldn't say anything," Schumacker told Insider over Zoom in July from the Warner Bros. lot.The uncertainty of whether or not the adult animated series would be renewed for a third season is why the show's second season ended with Harley (Kaley Cuoco) and her best friend, Poison Ivy (Lake Bell), riding off into the sunset proclaiming their love for one another.Without giving away spoilers, it's also likely why season three, which is currently releasing new episodes weekly on HBO Max, also ends its 10-episode run in a similar fashion. "We really wanted to have that gratifying Harley/Ivy moment that we felt was earned and that the fans deserved and the characters deserved.""That was why we ended it that way," Halpern continued, adding, "We were hopeful we'd get a season three, but also it's like, who the fuck knows?"Before the show returned to HBO Max at the end of July, Insider spoke with Halpern and Schumacker about the Joker's interesting turn as the mayor of Gotham City, their reaction to Zack Snyder's NSFW Batman and Catwoman fan art that he posted, and how WB had no problem with them including a massive orgy scene on episode four.<h2>Parts of season 2 were recorded in a closet during the pandemic. At times, it was a struggle to write season 3 because of the team's mental state.</h2><div type="image" title="Batman is a sad boy on season three of Harley Quinn" height="1080" width="1920" msid="94061302" hostid="261"></div>You guys had a bit more time to work on this third season than the first two because of the pandemic. Is the season that we're watching the one that you guys always had in mind or did the pandemic help it to evolve into what fans are seeing?Halpern: That's a good question.Schumacker: I don't know that it had any specific effect on it. The pandemic hit when we were in post on the end of season two. This is how glamorous it got. I was voice directing Diedrich Bader remotely. I was at home. Diedrich was in his wife's walk-in closet using his iPhone. Our sound engineers had to send him pictures of his own daughter holding the iPhone at the appropriate angle so that Diedrich could know exactly where to hold it for the best sound quality.I was blindly doing it. I could see the finished animation. Diedrich could see that, but I couldn't see Diedrich so it was voice-only communication and he's literally in his wife's closet huddled under her dresses because there was decent sound in that area in his house.I would say it affected production a little bit or post-production from all the way back in season two. Then our writer's room in season three was all Zoom.In terms of the actual content of the show, I think it pretty much was the season that we envisioned. Halpern: I do think it was affected by the pandemic in terms of the sort of mental state all of us were in when we were writing it. I certainly felt like it was more of a struggle. "Harley" is a pretty joyful show, even if it's got a bit of cynicism to it in certain areas. It's a pretty exuberant, joyful show. Normally, when we're in person and there's no pandemic, it's easier to get to that place.During the pandemic, we started the writer's room six months into the pandemic. You could feel us struggling to get to those places that we needed to get to, to write the show and there were a lot of times where we would go too dark with something and then we'd have to pull ourselves back just because of the mental state we were all in during that time.<h2>Bringing in two female co-showrunners on season 3 helped bring fresh eyes to the Harlivy story and the show in general</h2><div type="image" title="Harl and Ivy on season 3 of Harley Quinn" height="1080" width="1920" msid="94061303" hostid="261"></div>There's a lot of pressure to get things right on a TV show when you have a long-shipped couple finally get together. How did you guys avoid stumbling on season three with Harley and Ivy and did bringing in new co-showrunners Chrissy Pietrosh and Jessica Goldstein help? How has the dynamic of working with them been?Halpern: I wasn't quite as worried about like, "Oh, they're finally together. Is this gonna fuck up the show?" There are so many more stories we can tell now that they're together and I had always been interested in the idea of somebody who's been in toxic relationships and bringing those bad habits to a good relationship. That's something universal that a lot of people can understand.And it was really nice with Chrissy and Jess. We've been friends with them for a really long time. We sort of have this joke where we've tried to hire them and work with them several times and they've just always been too busy.It was nice to have fresh eyes who are people that we love and trust working with us, along with the mix of our staff that we had worked with for a long time who totally get the show and understand all the sort of nooks and crannies that make up this weird television show.Schumacker: Chrissy and Jess were super gung-ho about making sure that they had done the appropriate amount of research. They come from a comedy background and they've worked on workplace comedies, they've worked on family shows. They didn't come in with this encyclopedic knowledge of the DCU, but they were super eager to dive in and immediately were like, "OK, Pat, send us the best 100 Harley or Ivy or Harlivy stories. We're gonna just pour over this stuff to make sure we have all this stuff in our heads before we go in."<h2>It was a writer's idea to make Clock King and Riddler a couple</h2><div type="image" title="The Riddler and Clock King on season 3 of Harley Quinn" height="1593" width="2709" msid="94061305" hostid="261"></div>I need to know whose idea it was to pair Riddler and Clock King together in the season's third episode. I want you to know there is already fan art of the two together drawn in the style of "Batman: The Animated Series."Halpern: That's amazing.Schumacker: That's so cool.Halpern: I think that was Jamiesen Borak.Schumacker: It was definitely Jamiesen Borak who wrote several episodes this season. He wrote the Villy's episode — episode three. That's obviously, Jim Rash's Riddler and James Adomian is playing Clock King. Jamiesen wanted them as a couple very early on and we were happy to oblige.<h2>Halpern and Schumacker were shocked when they saw Zack Snyder tweet fan art showing <a href="https://twitter.com/ZackSnyder/status/1405702805948538881">Batman giving Catwoman oral sex</a>, based on a scene they originally pitched for season 3. There's a nod to it on episode three.</h2><div type="image" title="Catwoman and Batman on season 3 of Harley Quinn" height="1580" width="2826" msid="94061306" hostid="261"></div>A while back, you guys <a href="https://variety.com/2021/tv/features/subverting-superhero-tv-wandavision-harley-quinn-umbrella-academy-1234992069/">had shared with Variety that a planned oral-sex scene between Batman and Catwoman was cut by DC</a>. The quote in the story was "heroes don't do that." I'm really curious what your reaction was when Zack Snyder then <a href="https://gizmodo.com/zack-snyders-declaration-about-superhero-sex-has-been-m-1847168883">tweeted out NSFW artwork showing just that</a>. Were you guys shocked and did he reach out to you guys at all?Schumacker: We never heard from him.Halpern: I remember seeing that come up and the first thing I did — 'cause Pat is a huge, huge comics fan — I sent it to Pat and I'm like, "Is this from a comic? And Pat was like, "No. This is not from a comic." And I'm like, "Does this mean that Zack Snyder commissioned someone to draw this?" And Pat was like, "I'm almost 100% certain."It's so funny 'cause I have kids. At the time, they were probably like 4 and 7, or 5 and 8, and my phone is just nonstop people sending me this picture of Batman going down on Catwoman that Zack Snyder commissioned and my kids will be picking up my phone looking and I'm like, "No." [Laughs.]It was like a solid day. Somebody sends it to me like 12 hours after it happened — "Did you see this?" I'm like, "Yeah, you think I didn't fucking see? You think somebody didn't send me this thing a thousand times before?" [Laughs.]We never talked to Zack Snyder and also we were feeling a little bit like, "God, this turned into a huge thing. Maybe it'll just go away on its own."Schumacker: It did not.Halpern: It did not.Schumacker: Every time we thought it was over a new late-night show would pick it up. All of a sudden it's on John Oliver. [Laughs.] Oh, my God. Every late-night show had a bit about it. It was wild. I mean, it ended up being excellent press for the show albeit in a messy way. And then we were able to do a little bit of a riff on it this season.<div type="image" title="Batman rubs Catwoman's feet on Harley Quinn season 3" height="1592" width="2816" msid="94061307" hostid="261"></div>I was going to ask if it was episode three when Batman asks Catwoman, "Shall I continue?" But we only see him rubbing her feet. Was that a nod to how you guys originally wanted to show the more intimate scene or is that now also kind of a nod to all of this craziness that happened?Schumacker: It was in there from the beginning. We had the animatic. There's not much that changed. I think the thing that changed is that now her foot is in the foreground and it's in Batman's hands. It's still the same framing, the same general blocking.So yeah, that wasn't so much of a response to what happened online. We were sort of past the point of no return in terms of animation. Obviously, we can make tweaks up to the last minute, but we did not overhaul that scene at all.<h2>WB didn't allow Batman to go down on Catwoman on season 3 of "Harley Quinn," but they did allow them to add an orgy</h2><div type="image" title="Harley Quinn Court of Owls orgy episode" height="1080" width="1920" msid="94061308" hostid="261"></div>Was there anywhere else where you two tried to really push the bar this season and WB asked you to dial it back or do you guys just do things and then ask for forgiveness later?Halpern: Us and the writing staff write it the way we want it and then we sort of send it up the flag pole and I honestly don't think there was anywhere else in this season that they said, no. I mean, we did a whole orgy episode.I was just going to say, I can't believe they wouldn't let you do the Batman/Catwoman scene, but then, in the next episode, there's a giant orgy.Halpern: They were very supportive, by the way, of that orgy episode. I thought, "Oh, I'm sure we'll get some pushback from somebody." But they liked it. That's the thing I really like about DC. They obviously are protective of their IP as Marvel is, as anyone is, but DC will let you take swings. I know people don't necessarily think this, but I do.DC does have a sense of humor about themselves in a way that a lot of places do not. If they didn't, they wouldn't let us make the show that we make.For us, DC has been so incredibly supportive of this show and it was just funny 'cause that Batman thing went viral and in a way, it's not indicative at all of the general support that comes from DC to make our show. We do what you saw. We do crazy shit.Schumacker: It's also really cool seeing comics creators who are fully embracing the show, despite it being such a deviation from the publishing side. I was down at Comic-Con and I got to meet a bunch of DC writers. He's been a good sport about it so far, but I don't know that he knows what's coming.<h2>They had a lot of fun making the Joker the mayor of Gotham City</h2><div type="image" title="Harley Quinn 306 Joker runs for mayor" height="1080" width="1920" msid="94061309" hostid="261"></div>Episode six is centered around the Joker and how it seems like he's a changed man as a stepdad running for mayor of Gotham City. By the end of the episode, he becomes the mayor. Is Joker someone who can really change and does he deserve redemption?Halpern: The thing that we wanted to play with in that episode was — and he says it — he's like, "I can be for universal healthcare and also killing people." Right? It seems like it's impossible. Those two things don't reconcile.We wanted to play the idea of: What if the historically worst, most evil person in all of Gotham City had some really helpful, progressive policies that were gonna make... and really, truly wanted to make Gotham a better place to live? How do you reconcile that?In terms of our third season, yes, he seems to have redeemed himself some, but if we were to go forward — Joker is such a manic character in a different way than Harley that I feel like he's one of those characters that you can kind of whiplash. You can go in a lot of different directions pretty quickly and it will pass the smell test for the character. We're all kind of open to seeing what's the next interesting step for him, but we really like that idea of, he's a really good mayor who also is a murderer.<div type="image" title="Joker on Harley Quinn season 3 ep 6" height="1080" width="1920" msid="94061310" hostid="261"></div>Schumacker: I think those make for the best characters and most interesting villains, as well. I think the same thing goes with Joker.It's hard to argue with Joker when he robs a bank and literally throws the money out at people in Gotham.Halpern: Gotham is a really fucked up place. Whoever was in charge of Gotham before, this is one of the worst mayors that's ever been. So, if I'm a citizen of Gotham — that's what we talked about in the writer's room — I get fired up if somebody was like, "Yeah! Those missiles are conventionally armed but also have offensive capability."In response to China's past and recent rapid expansion of missile capabilities, there is indeed a missile race ongoing in the Indo-Pacific," said Patrick Cronin, the Asia-Pacific Security chair at the Hudson Institute think tank.Those countries - Cronin cited South Korea and "the Quad" of India, Japan, Australia, and the US - see the threat China poses differently, but the cumulative effect is clear. It's not so distant either," Cronin said. "So all of these countries have to start filling in their own offensive capabilities."US allies in the region, particularly Japan and South Korea, were long able to rely on the US military for their defense, but uncertainty over the US's commitment has prompted them to bolster and diversify their own firepower."The US has, over time, both demonstrated a great ability to defend allies but also occasional lapses to follow-through," Cronin said. "It's entirely possible that these countries don't want to rely exclusively on the US. The countries in question also remain focused on deterrence, not aggression, even as they hurry to improve and expand those capabilities."People have been reluctant to say there's an <keyword id="67280" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="arms-race">arms race</keyword> in Asia. There's also the potential to tease out information not only about who someone is (the point of dating in general) but also who they were during the pandemic. In response to an uptick in cases, at least nineteen <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/california-washington-state-of-emergency-coronavirus-what-it-means-2020-3">states have declared states of emergency</a>, and a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/major-events-cancelled-or-postponed-due-to-the-coronavirus-2020">number of large-scale gatherings</a>, such as SXSW and Coachella, have been cancelled or postponed.Though we've reached pandemic levels, WHO still believes that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-threat-of-coronavirus-pandemic-very-real-2020-3">COVID-19 can be contained with aggressive action</a>. If you don't have one of those, we've outlined what they are and some tips on putting one together.<h1>What is an emergency contingency plan?</h1>An emergency contingency plan is a comprehensive set of procedures businesses put in place in case they experience an event that could impact operations or employee well-being. This could range from a data breach to a natural disaster, like a tornado, to a high-level executive suddenly leaving. A plan like this "empowers employees to respond quickly and effectively to an evolving disaster or emergency incident," explained Patrick Hardy, creator of the <a href="https://disasterhawk.com/">Disaster Hawk disaster preparedness app</a>. According to <a href="https://konghq.com/team/janet-phillips/">Janet Phillips</a>, vice president of people at tech company Kong, the main components of an emergency contingency plan include:<ul><li>A designated emergency response team, including people who are trained in evacuating staff from the building safely</li><li>A list of predefined scenarios that may require a rapid and/or sustained response</li><li>A comprehensive communications process for notifying and updating staff, customers, and partners about the emergency</li></ul>"Every company needs an emergency contingency plan because each company, regardless of its size or where it's based, could potentially face [different types of] emergencies," said Phillips. <h1>How to devise a contingency plan</h1>Start off by making a list of key risks the company could face, along with their possible impact. What events and scenarios could interrupt everyday operations? What functions and departments would be most impacted, and how? Map out every possible outcome.For example, if the whole building loses power, every employee who works there will be affected. Wireless internet won't work, severely hampering external communications. Parts of the office will be poorly lit, and the air conditioning or heat will shut off.Once you have your comprehensive list, create a plan of action for each scenario. For the example above, a few things you'd want to think about are:<ul><li>If your office building has a generator and whether or not you have access to it</li><li>Who owns and maintains the building and how to contact them</li><li>How long you want to wait to see if the power kicks back on </li><li>How employees should do their work if the power doesn't come back on</li></ul>This should be a discussion among key business leaders in an effort to make sure your team thinks of every possible scenario, impact, and solution.When the contingency plan is complete, share it with staff. Transparency is key to forging trust and making sure employees feel safe and know what to do. The last thing anyone wants to be doing during an emergency is, well, trying to figure out what they should be doing.Since this plan could change, the best way to share it is on a company intraweb where it can be easily updated. To increase the chances of all employees knowing it exists and exactly where it is, require managers to discuss it with their direct teams."Managers are typically the first line of communication with employees," shared Phillips, "so it's quite important to establish a climate of communication and trust so topics like these can be raised and discussed. This is not the time to wing it." <h1>Developing a contingency plan for COVID-19</h1>COVID-19 is a rapidly developing situation, and there's a lot we don't know. A few things we do know, though, are: It's spreading quite quickly, affecting hundreds of thousands of people, and it can be fatal, especially to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/health-conditions-that-increase-risk-of-severe-coronavirus-infection-2020-3">vulnerable populations</a>. Businesses absolutely, without a doubt, need to take aggressive action."When creating an action plan specifically for [an outbreak like] COVID-19," explained Jeanniey Mullen, chief innovation officer at financial services company DailyPay, "businesses must consider ways to minimize their employees' exposure to potentially contract the virus and infect others." According to Hardy, a COVID-19 response plan should include the following: <ul><li>Preparedness - taking measures to prevent an outbreak among staff</li><li>Isolation - steps to take to prepare for transitioning to remote operations/if your office has to shut down</li><li>Activation - the planned response if the company has an employee who tests positive for COVID-19</li></ul>With all of that in mind, here are some steps you can take to build out your company's COVID-19 contingency plan.<h3>Know exactly what to do if someone at your office tests positive for COVID-19</h3>If an employee tests positive and has been at the office, the rest of the staff in that location needs to be informed immediately. However, you should do your best to be confidential and <a href="https://www.eeoc.gov/eeoc/newsroom/wysk/wysk_ada_rehabilitaion_act_coronavirus.cfm">comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act</a>. The office space should be disinfected, and any employees who worked in close proximity to the infected individual should self-quarantine at home for 14 days. If possible, the safest route would be to quarantine all employees who work at that location. Either way, the entire staff should <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/php/risk-assessment.html">conduct a risk assessment</a> on themselves.<h3>Communicate clearly and regularly about the virus</h3>Source all of your updates from the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/summary.html">CDC</a> and <a href="https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019">WHO</a>, and regularly check to see if your state has declared a state of emergency and, if so, what that means for your company.Be extremely clear about any changes to any policies, encourage public health habits (like <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-long-should-you-wash-your-hands">proper hand washing</a> and sneezing into your elbow), and designate a person or a small group of people who employees can go to if they have questions about COVID-19 in relation to business operations."Additionally, this may seem fairly intuitive," said <a href="https://www.ascentis.com/about/team/">Jennifer Ho</a>, vice president of human resources at Ascentis, "but make sure your employee contact information is up to date and available virtually, as you might need to contact your employees after hours, or other times none of you are in the office."<h3>Assess the essential functions of your business and cross-train your team</h3>In order for your business to continue operating, what functions can it absolutely not go without? For example, if it's a direct-to-consumer company, you'll likely need to ensure you can still produce and ship your product. But, perhaps you can lay low on social media efforts. Make a list of all vital tasks.If only one person can carry out a certain vital task, others need to be trained on it. If there's only a single employee who knows how to reset the office WiFi when it acts up and she gets sick, you could end up operating sans internet for a while. Create in-depth documentation outlining exactly how to do each necessary business function. <h3>Revisit the company's paid sick leave policy</h3>In times like this, your current policies may be too stringent. If an employee has extremely limited sick time, they may feel discouraged from staying home, instead opting to hide their suspicions about being infected and still coming into the office. This puts everyone at risk."PTO and sick leave policies should be revisited to allow for potential exemptions and leniency in these kinds of situations," Ho shared. "In doing so, employees will have the assurance they won't be penalized for taking needed sick time, which can also reduce the spread of COVID-19." Take note that, on March 6, <a href="https://www.help.senate.gov/ranking/newsroom/press/coronavirus-murray-delauro-introduce-new-emergency-paid-sick-days-legislation">Senator Patty Murray introduced a bill that would require employers to provide all workers with emergency paid sick leave</a> during public health emergencies like the COVID-19 spread. The bill's still pending, so keep an eye on it. Some companies, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walmart-coronavirus-leave-policy-kentucky-paid-2020-3">such as Walmart</a>, have already implemented new sick leave policies themselves in response to the outbreak.Additionally, be advised that the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/guidance-business-response.html">CDC says you should not ask for a doctor's note to prove an employee's virus status</a> in order to avoid putting even more stress on the country's medical system.<h3>Implement a work-from-home policy </h3>If it's possible for your organization to do this, it'll be a great help for employees who are quarantined but can still work, or if the entire office or building needs to be shut down. But be clear - employees should actually be working from their house, not holed up in a coffee shop where they could catch or spread the virus. There are a number of tools companies can use these days to more easily facilitate remote working (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-companies-making-remote-work-tools-free-during-coronavirus-outbreak-2020-3">some organizations are even making their tools free right now</a>!)."Remote work is more than just simply email correspondence and phone calls," said Ho. "By leveraging the right technology, companies can keep teams engaged and productive."Ho also suggested devising ways to establish accountability for remote workers, as expectations around availability, productivity, and time management may be different when employees work off-site. Discuss these expectations with your whole team, and decide how often and when you'll check in during the day.<h3>Provide a working environment that's as clean as possible</h3>The space you require employees to come to every day should be safe and clean. Stock up on tissues, hand soap, no-touch trash receptacles, and disposable wipes. Everyone should be washing their hands frequently and disinfecting high-touch objects regularly, and they need the resources to do so.<h3>Enforce travel guidelines</h3>Areas with <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/index.html">CDC travel notices</a> should be avoided as much as possible. If there are any business trips currently planned to one of these locations, cancel them.While you can't control what an employee does outside of the office, encourage them not to travel to any of these places. Goldman Sachs' new managing director list is out

<keyword id="6357342" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hiring">Hiring</keyword> managers look for safe hires. Future employees that won’t rock the boat, have no obvious defects, and are ‘fine’ – but face it, ho-hum hires lead to ho-hum companies.
Fear plays too large a role when hiring. No one wants to be the one that hired “that guy”.
Every week, you see another post from another bleeding-heart writer about how companies need to care more about the feelings of their applicants: ‘10 ways your hiring process repels applicants”.
Time out. Companies have every right to be terrified of hiring the wrong person. Bad hires are brutally expensive, and expenses kill businesses. Dead businesses don’t employ anyone. Everybody loses.
But how do you manage these fears so you don’t end up with mediocre employees?
Look for compatible flaws. What is with the obsession of trying to hire perfect people? Nobody’s perfect.
Perfect People Don’t Exist
Like unicorns or Santa (don’t let my kid see this), perfect people don’t exist. Even if your “perfect” people do exist, chances are that they probably aren’t putting in an application.
Once you accept that perfect is not realistic, the typical hiring process looks pretty stupid.
Review resumes, then find someone with the perfect degree, from the perfect school, with the perfect experience. Then meet candidates that interview perfectly, who offer the perfect answers.
Sounds good in theory, but as employers, we must face facts. The next applicant isn’t going to be Superman. We’re all human. With our unrealistic expectations, we can’t blame applicants for hiding their imperfections and interviewing with all the ‘right’ answers. We, the employers, have made and perpetuated that problem.
Perfect People Are Boring
When was the last time you have read a book or watched a TV show about a character with zero flaws?
Never.
The best characters have imperfections, despite their genius. It’s what makes them believable. Sherlock Holmes, and his 21st century equal, House, M.D., are addicts and jerks. Temperance Brennan, from Bones, is socially robotic. Patrick Jane, The Mentalist, is haunted by his past and fueled by revenge.
Note: We’re not suggesting you hire a socially mechanical, drug addicted, who is laden with emotional baggage and out to punish those who have wronged him — although, it’d be a hit reality, ‘The Office meets Survivor’ TV show.
Use Hiring Wabi Sabi
Wabi Sabi is the Japanese art of imperfection. It is characterized by asymmetry, (roughness or irregularity), simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy and appreciation of the ingenuous integrity of natural objects and processes. In short, to recruit applicants with flaws, given the right conditions, can be amazingly beautiful.
At the end of the day, our flaws define us. If we were all perfect, then we would all be exactly the same (…boring…).
It’s our imperfections that make us unique.
What’s Next?
Employers: realize that awesome hires cannot be perfect. Look for hires who have flaws that are complemented by the rest of your team, and have strengths that can complement your team’s existing flaws.
Job Seekers: realize that you’re not perfect, and that is okay. Be as honest as you can, and accept it when your particular flaws can’t make the company’s canvas more beautiful.
