The protests and counter protests at the Jawaharlal Nehru University are refusing to die out. What started as an event to mark the death anniversary of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, by alleged students of the University, at the campus has snowballed into a gigantic political controversy, resulting in detentions under sedition charges, assault on journalists amongst other things etc. 
 
Here is the timeline of what happened at the JNU campus: 
 
- Alleged students of the JNU had organised an event to protest against judicial hanging of Afzal Guru in 2013 and also to express solidarity with Kashmiri migrants. 
 
- Posters were put up at the Sabarmati dhaba of JNU campus about the same. Also, a programme-‘A country without a post office — against the judicial killing of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhatt’-was supposed to take off. 
 
- This didn’t go down well with ABVP members, who protested against the event, demanding expulsion of the organisers. 
 
- A disciplinary enquiry was taken up by the university administration. The administration claimed the organisers went ahead with the event without permission. 
 
- A protest march was also carried out and ABVP members accused JNU students of shouting anti-India slogans. A video also appeared in which students were heard shouting slogans like ‘Kashmir ki azadi se, bharat ki barbadi tak, jangh rahegi jari’. 
 
- Now, ABVP members and JNU students are at loggerheads. In the face-off, JNU students say they did not shout any anti-national slogans. 
 
- A sedition case against unknown students was registered at Vasant Kunj (North) police station and the university also barred eight students from academic activity pending an enquiry. 
 
- JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested on sedition charges and ordered to three-day police custody. 
 
- Students of JNU gave a shutdown call and #JNUShutdown started trending everywhere, demanding Kumar’s release. JNU teachers also joined the students in boycotting classes. 
 
- On February 14, the Patiala House saw violence as a mob, wearing lawyer’s robe, slapped and kicked supporters of Kanhaiya Kumar. Journalists and students bore the brunt of the violence. 
 - Over 400 journalists had taken out a procession after mediapersons were attacked by lawyers at the <keyword id="286287" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Patiala-court">Patiala Court</keyword>. The Supreme Court had slammed unruly behaviour of the lawyers and ordered that both the clients and media persons should be given security in the premises of the courts. 
 
 
 
- On February 17 also, violence was witnessed outside Patiala House Court when two groups of lawyers clashed with each other. Pro-India slogans were raised by lawyers who called themselves 'deshbhakts' and referred to those stopping them as 'deshdrohi'. 
 
- The group of lawyers that attacked journalists said that they cannot be termed 'goons'. Lawyers were heard chanting ‘Vande Mataram’. The Supreme Court was also informed that Kanhaiya Kumar was attacked in the court premises. 
 
- Some reports of stone-pelting at the Patiala House court also surfaced. 
 
- SC restricted the number reporters to five and two supporters of arrested students for the hearing. 
 
- Kanhaiya Kumar has been sent to judicial custody till March 02. Before his hearing, journalists were yet again attacked in the scuffle between two lawyer groups. 
 
- Doctor has been called to provide medical aid to Kanhaiya. 
 
- Kumar has maintained that he did not shout any anti-national slogans and few outsiders were involved in raising anti-India slogans.

Everything you need to know about the JNU unrest

<keyword id="162971" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shrenuj-Company">Shrenuj &amp; Company</keyword>, the 100-year-old diamond house which is also one of the largest in the trade, has landed into trouble because the lender banks have tightened their grip on the four-generation old group. 
 
The lending banks, with a combined exposure of around $450 million, have formed a consortium to obtain court order which would allow them to repossess the company’s diamond inventory, while also restricting the promoters’ travel. The consortium is lead by Bank of India, and includes ICICI Bank, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of Patiala, Standard Chartered bank and Andhra Bank amongst others. 
 
The orders have been issued by the Debt Recovery Tribunal. As per the orders, chairman and MD Shreyas Doshi and group executive director Vishal Doshi are forbidden from travelling outside India without court’s prior permission. 
 
The reason behind the troubles of Shrenuj &amp; Company could be cited to the slowdown in the diamond industry and the failure of its international diversification in Africa. 
 
Other than obtaining court orders, banks have also declared some of the company’s accounts as sub-standard, which means that the interest or principal has remained unpaid for at least a quarter. 
 
While the last quarter of 2015 saw Shrenuj &amp; Company registering a net loss of Rs 4.9 crore, it widened to Rs 38.32 crore in the first quarter of 2016. However, the company had registered a net profit of Rs 2.5 crore in the last quarter of 2015.

Lenders obtain court notices against diamond house Shrenuj & Company

Two agents who helped Walmart and Bharti Enterprises obtain store licenses have filed cases against the companies for not clearing their dues for the last three years. 
 
The companies severed ties with about two dozen such agents and consultants in June 2012 when Walmart was investigating whether its local unit had violated US anti-bribery laws. 
 
The company will freeze its expansion plans for India with the opening of its 21st store in Agra this August. 
 Bharti and Walmart informed it’s agents that <keyword id="158162" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bharti-Walmart">Bharti Walmart</keyword> has the right to audit their financial documents, and KPMG was contacted to do that. The consultants were also told to list their dues so they can receive payments. 
 
"They haven't paid us even after three years," said Rajesh Gupta, an agent says. He claims Walmart owes him about Rs. 10 lakhs and Bharti about Rs. 40 lakhs. He had filed cases against the companies in Delhi's Patiala House district court. 
 Lawyer Peeyoosh Kalra said he had filed a case against Walmart on behalf of an agent in the Delhi High Court. "There is no pending case between <keyword id="117289" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bharti-Retail">Bharti Retail</keyword> Ltd and any of its service providers in relation to the licenses," a Bharti Retail spokesperson said. 
 "There have been a very small number of commercial disputes during the business transition as we became fully owned subsidiary in 2014. Majority of these issues have now been resolved," said Rajneesh Kumar, Vice president &amp; head corporate affairs at <keyword id="6372175" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="WalMart-India">Walmart India</keyword>.

companies to court

The <keyword id="219589" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Special-CBI-Judge">special CBI judge</keyword> <keyword id="2055026" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bharat-Parashar">Bharat Parashar</keyword> has hogged the limelight after having summoned the former PM Manmohan Singh as an accused in the coal scam. 
 The Economic Times reports, the Patiala House courts additional sessions judge, later nominated by Supreme Court on recommendation of a sitting <keyword id="6355014" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Delhi-High-Court">Delhi High Court</keyword> judge, has taken to task various investigating agencies from time to time. Pressurizing the <keyword id="6354572" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="CBI">CBI</keyword> for not sticking to the deadlines in the <keyword id="981763" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Coalgate">Coalgate</keyword> scam and refusing to accept its closure reports, he has always been a taskmaster for the CBI. 
 He hit the headlines in the coal case first, when he asked the CBI point blank whether they had questioned the then PM, Manmohan Sngh, who held the coal portfolio during some of the coal block allocations, the ET has reported. The CBI later did question the then <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword>.

Parashar left two judgments written for his successor, who later pronounced them in open court. The High Court had to later strike it down since any ruling to stand had to be pronounced in open court by the judge himself.

New Delhi, Jul 13 () A doctor attached with the Indian boxing team on Monday tested positive for COVID-19 even as all the pugilists who have assembled for training in Patiala came out negative but stared at a possible suspension of the proposed camp due to the development. The 11 boxers, including Asian Games champion and world silver-medallist Amit Panghal, will be retested as they were at the same quarantine facility with the doctor. "Dr Amol (Patil) was in quarantine in a centre outside the main campus of national Institute of Sports (NIS) Patiala. As per protocol, before he is allowed to enter main hostel and sports arena, he was given the COVID test on the 7th day (of quarantine) and tested positive," the Sports Authority of India said in a statement to when asked about the development. "He has been shifted to the state-run COVID centre. Those who are identified as primary contact will be tested tomorrow. The quarantine period for all persons staying in the same quarantine facility has been extended by one week. The centre has been sterilised as per protocol," it added. The boxers have, however, tested negative but will undergo a second round of testing on Tuesday. "Dr Patil is completely asymptomatic, not even mild symptoms are there. He will recover soon enough," said a source close to the team. Patil has been a regular in Indian boxing and travelled with the team to the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the world championships last year. The pugilists were due to start training later this month or early in August after the Boxing Federation of India got the SAI nod to conduct the national camp amid the pandemic. The conduct of the camp is currently being overseen by SAI after the Delhi High Court stayed the sports ministry's recognition to 57 national federations including the BFI. Nine Indian boxers have qualified for the Olympics, postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic. They are -- Amit Panghal (52kg), Manish Kaushik (63kg), Vikas Krishan (69kg), Ashish Kumar (75kg), Satish Kumar (+91kg), MC Mary Kom (51kg), Simranjit Kaur (60kg), Lovlina Borgohain (69kg), and Pooja Rani (75kg). Of these, Mary Kom continues to train at her home in Delhi as attending the camp was optional. As per the SAI's safety protocols for training, boxers have been barred from doing human sparring, told not to access the ring and use their personal equipment for all forms of training. They were to be offered cover for COVID-19 in their medical insurance, as per the SOP made by the BFI. The boxers and the federation also have to sign consent forms acknowledging the risk of resumption before being allowed back at the SAI centre. PM AH

Doctor with Indian boxing team tests positive for COVID-19

New Delhi, Jan 29 () GST authorities have detected two cases of fake invoices for fraudulently availing input tax credit (ITC) and arrested four persons in the connection, an official release said.
 Delhi North Commissionerate, Delhi CGST zone has also detected another case of clandestine removal of goods without issuing invoices. One person has been arrested in this case.
 "The arrested persons have been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM), New Delhi at Patiala House Court," the release said.
 The four accused, in the fake invoice case, had availed total ineligible ITC of around Rs 90 crore on invoices issued by non-existent firms.
 In the clandestine removal case, the accused had prima facie supplied goods worth about Rs 41 crore without issuing invoices, thus defrauding the exchequer to the tune of more than Rs 7 crore, the release said.
 Further investigations are underway to identify other beneficiaries and to recover the GST involved, it added. NKD ABM

<ul><li>Rajnish Kumar, the chairman of <keyword id="6354731" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="state-bank-of-india">State Bank of India</keyword> (SBI) said that additional mergers with smaller banks would give the bank <keyword id="67392" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Monopoly">monopoly</keyword> powers. </li><li>Kumar’s statement comes a few days after the Indian government ordered the <keyword id="42411" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Merger">merger</keyword> of Bank of Baroda, Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank in lieu of further mergers of state-owned banks. </li><li>In April 2017, SBI began the process of merging with five of its subsidiaries- State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State Bank of Travancore, State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Mysore and State Bank of Hyderabad as well as Bharatiya Mahila Bank. </li></ul>Rajnish Kumar, the chairman of State Bank of India (SBI) has categorically ruled out any absorption of smaller banks by SBI in the short term. Speaking to media outlets in New Delhi, Kumar’s statement comes a few days after the Indian government ordered <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indias-government-is-merging-three-state-owned-lenders-to-create-one-of-the-countrys-largest-banks/articleshow/65853052.cms">the merger </a>of Bank of Baroda, Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank in lieu of further mergers of state-owned banks. SBI is India’s largest bank, holding a little under a quarter of all the assets in the banking system, which begs the question: how much room does it have for economies of scale from mergers? While Kumar agreed that there were far too many public sector banks in India and that they required <keyword id="76844" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Consolidation">consolidation</keyword> for improved management and capital strength, he explained that any further acquisitions of state-owned banks by SBI would give it monopoly powers. Kumar added that SBI was still focussing on the integration of the six banks it absorbed last year, explaining that it would take around two to three years for the synergies from the merger to start manifesting themselves. In April 2017, SBI began the process of merging with five of its subsidiaries- State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State Bank of Travancore, State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Mysore and State Bank of Hyderabad as well as Bharatiya Mahila Bank. While the merger proved to be a drag on SBI’s profitability and added to its already-high level of non-performing loans and provisioning requirements, Kumar said <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/money-and-banking/sbi-to-be-back-in-black-from-sept-quarter-says-chairman/article24773447.ece">last month</a> that he expected the bank to report a profit in the quarter ending September. Separately, Kumar said that SBI was on course to resolve around 7 to 8 stressed power accounts before the expiration of the Supreme Court’s grace period on 11 November. The resolution of around ₹170 billion worth of non-performing loans will come as a significant relief to the bank, which currently holds nearly 20% of all the bad loans in India’s banking sector.

The apex court bench comprising Justice J. Chelameswar and Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre said they will hear the plea at 10.30 a.m. on Friday. 
 
Lawyer Vrinda Grover, who filed the plea on behalf of Kanhaiya Kumar, said in the petition that since the atmosphere in the Patiala House court complex was not conducive for moving the plea application, Kanhaiya Kumar was invoking his right under Article 32 to move the Supreme court directly for bail. 
 
Under Article 32, a citizen can move the Supreme Court for enforcing his fundamental rights.
