This Bangalore start-up is changing how the first-aid kit looks all over the world

Dressed in camouflage, she marches at a stadium in the central city of Homs, raising her fist and chanting "Allah, Suriya, Bashar wa bas" (God, Syria, Bashar — that's it), the rallying cry of the embattled leader's supporters.
The stadium's entrances are guarded by <keyword id="624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Women">women</keyword> armed with Kalashnikovs, while others search cars at a checkpoint. They present themselves as "fedayat", which in Arabic literally means those who sacrifice themselves for a cause.
"My husband encouraged me to get involved and I liked the idea. I introduced myself to the recruitment centre and was easily accepted," explains the "fedaya" Abir, who has kept her day job as a technician in a radiology laboratory.
"Before I did not know how to handle a gun and I did not dare stay at home alone for fear of being attacked. I wanted to learn and to help. I volunteered because my country is suffering," she says.
The first women's unit of the National Defence Forces in Syria, founded in the central city of Homs, has 450 fighters from 18 to 50 years of age.
Nada Jahjah, a retired commander who oversees the training, says Homs was chosen "due to the tragic circumstances experienced by the city".
"This is not a normal war, it looks nothing like the October (1973 war against Israel). It is not the enemy we knew. This time the enemy is from our family, our neighbours and neighbouring countries supplying arms and spreading fundamentalist thinking. They kill and slay Syrians. This is a savage war," she says.
Since the outbreak of peaceful anti-regime protests in March 2011, Syrian authorities have dismissed the revolt as a foreign-funded conspiracy and referred to opposition activists and armed rebels alike as Al-Qaeda affiliated terrorists.
The director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman, told <keyword id="68053" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="AFP">AFP</keyword> the regime has created a paramilitary force to supplement the army in its fight against the rebels.
Dubbed the "capital of the revolution" by the opposition, Homs has been at the forefront of the uprising.
It was the first to pay dearly when Assad's war machine unleashed its firepower on rebel-held areas, retaking a large part of the city.
This industrial heartland is also a diverse centre of 1.5 million people, Sunnis, Christians and Alawites, whose sectarian fault lines have become entrenched with time.
In this charged environment, none of the combatants revealed where she lives, because pro- and anti-regime fighters use captives' ID cards to figure out their sectarian identities.
Sunnis, who represent 80 percent of the population, largely support the revolt, while 10 percent of the population are Alawites like President Assad, and the Christians at five percent mostly back the regime.
"The training includes shooting Kalashnikovs, machine guns, handling grenades, attacking opposition checkpoints, controlling our checkpoints, conducting raids and courses on <keyword id="6359526" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Military">military</keyword> tactics," says commander Jahjah.
The force is voluntary and the fedayat serve four-hour shifts in the morning from or in the afternoon to permit the women to carry on with their normal profession.
Etidal Hamad, a 34-year-old government employee and mother of three girls, says while her husband also encouraged her, her primary motivation to sign up three months ago was "a desire to support the army and defend the fatherland".
In the stadium parade that marks the end of the training, the women shout at the top of their lungs: "With our blood and our souls, we sacrifice ourselves for you, O Bashar!"

The top 5 awardees from India's paramilitary forces this Independence Day

New Delhi, Feb 1 () The Home Ministry was allocated Rs 1,05,244.34 crore for the next fiscal with a special emphasis on police forces and works related to the Census 2021.
In comparison to Rs 1,03,202.23 crore given in 2019-20, the Home Ministry got Rs 1,05,244.34 crore for 2020-21, a modest increase of around Rs 2,042 crore, according to the Union Budget presented in Lok Sabha on Saturday by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. 
 As the works for the Census 2021 has begun, the government has allocated Rs 4,278 crore under the Census Surveys and Statistics head.
 The budget allocated Rs 1,126.62 crore for relief on account of natural calamities and Rs 842.45 crore for social security and welfare schemes.
 The lion's share of the Home Ministry budget has gone to the paramilitary forces with the total allocation of Rs 92054.53 crore for 2020-21.

In July, it had also launched the first mobile phone tower in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh. It also enabled internet facilities, and provided computers to students--a move which was well appreciated by its residents. “Padhega Bastar, tabhi toh badhega Bastar (Education in Bastar will lead to development),” Moses Dhinakaran, Directorate General of CRPF tweeted. The Bastar district in Chhattisgarh is prone to Maoist activities.

The paramilitary serves as an auxiliary force for the People's Liberation Army. During times of peace, it's primarily concerned with law enforcement and internal security.
In times of war, they could triple the size of China's available military force - a potentially crucial source of strength, considering Beijing's ongoing tensions with its neighbors <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/asias-disputed-borders-2014-11">over its borders</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-south-china-sea-graphic-2014-7">various islands in the South China Sea.</a>

Defence procurement procedures being reviewed by govt: Cheema

<ul><li>The armed forces and <keyword id="64987" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paramilitary-forces">paramilitary forces</keyword> appealed to the <keyword id="476067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Transport">Ministry of Transport</keyword>, for exemptions from the BS-VI emission norms. </li><li>Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) emission norms are set to take effect in India from April 1, 2020. </li><li>The defence forces were also given exemption from the BS-IV emission norms in 2016.</li></ul>Indian armed forces and paramilitary forces are seeking an exemption from the stringent vehicle pollution norms, that are going to take effect from next year, <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/indian-armed-forces-seek-exemption-from-bs-vi-norms/story-Kc8jPYue59AmaBx9JtdEqM.html">according to sources</a>. However, defence vehicles were given an exception from BS IV norms in 2016 and this could be repeated again. “They have conveyed that it will be difficult to procure new vehicles till 2019 and have said that the dispensation given to the army should also be given to paramilitary vehicles because their operational areas are also similar,” according to an official. Global Norms Military vehicles in all the countries are exempted from stringent pollution control rules, “This is in part due to difficulty in assuring ultra-low sulphur fuel (10 parts per million) supply in all of the remote areas where a military vehicle might operate,” Anup Bandivadekar, passenger vehicles programme director, International Council on Clean Transportation <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/indian-armed-forces-seek-exemption-from-bs-vi-norms/story-Kc8jPYue59AmaBx9JtdEqM.html">told Hindustan Times</a>. As many as 8,000 women are a part of India’s <keyword id="64987" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paramilitary-forces">paramilitary forces</keyword>. In fact, the CRPF will also install nearly 800 steel stands for drying clothes, especially for the women personnel. The Home Ministry estimates a cumulative cost of nearly ₹300,000 for each sanitary pad vending machine, disposal unit and drying stand. “The sanction will help the force in ensuring better living and operating conditions for the over 8,000 women personnel who are in combat,” the ministry noted in the official sanction orders. The Defence Research and Development Organisation(DRDO) and CRPF also have plans to introduce women protectors for women in the battalion. Overall, the CRPF has over <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2019/jul/21/in-a-first-crpf-to-install-sanitary-pad-dispensers-for-women-in-combat-2007290.html">300,000 personnel</a>, including several employed in conflicted or naxal areas of the country such as Jammu and Kashmir. The ministry also said that the same will be used in other Indian forces as well. The idea to create a work environment for women in ‘Khaki’ was originated on the sidelines of a study on the issues of health, privacy and challenges faced by women personnel at workplace. The study was conducted by Renuka Mishra, IPS officer and additional director general (ADG) in Uttar Pradesh. The survey painted a dismal picture of women in police forces and highlighted their struggles to keep up with their jobs. Some of them carry on without drinking water so as to avoid urination as workplaces lack basic necessities. In fact, the women personnel dispose used napkins in a pit. "The women personnel said it was difficult for them to dry their inner wear due to lack of facilities. Clothes remain damp as they did not dry due to lack of sunlight, and led to urinary tract infections in women," Mishra told news agency PTI. <ul><li>The <keyword id="6355455" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-railways">Indian Railways</keyword> concluded its massive <keyword id="6359973" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="recruitment">recruitment</keyword> drive for Railway Protection Force (RPF).</li><li>It hired over 10,500 personnel — almost half of which — 4,517 — were women. </li><li>It shortlisted 1,120 sub-inspectors, 8,619 constables and 798 ancillary staffers from the recruitment drive, which was started in May 2018.</li><li>The recruitment to these paramilitary forces was based on a computer test for the first time, in order to ensure transparency.</li></ul>India’s largest employer, the Railways is taking steps to reduce the country’s gender gap in the workforce. In its recently concluded recruitment drive for Railway Protection Force (RPF) — which is dedicated to investigate criminal activities, the Railways <a href="https://www.zeebiz.com/india/news-rpf-recruitment-2019-indian-railways-recruits-over-10500-jawans-50-pct-posts-given-to-women-111069">hired over 10,500 personnel</a> — almost half (48%) of which were women. Presently, women constables account for a mere 2.25% of RPF. To change this, Indian Railways reserved 50% of the <keyword id="1062043" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="jobs-for-women">jobs for women</keyword>. It shortlisted 1,120 sub-inspectors, 8,619 constables and 798 ancillary staffers from the recruitment drive, which was started in May 2018. Of this, 4,517 were women. "For this biggest RPF recruitment drive, we received over 82 lakh applications, including 14.25 lakh for the post of sub-inspectors against 1,120 vacancies, and 59 lakh for the posts of constables. Empowering women, Indian Railways hires over 4,500 women personnel in an aggressive recruitment drive

<a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/black-budget-summary-details-us-spy-networks-successes-failures-and-objectives/2013/08/29/7e57bb78-10ab-11e3-8cdd-bcdc09410972_story.html">Barton Gellman and Greg Miller of the Post report</a> that the U.S. has spent more than $500 billion on intelligence since September 11, 2001, and during that time it transformed "a spy service struggling to emerge from the Cold War into a paramilitary force."
To accomplish that, a surge in CIA resources "funded secret prisons, a controversial interrogation program, the deployment of lethal drones and a huge expansion of its counterterrorism center," according to the Post.
At the same time the agency <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cias-global-response-staff-problems-2013-1">built a "Global Response Staff,"</a> which hired former U.S. commandos and began collaborating with U.S. Special Operations teams on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-rise-of-jsoc-in-dirty-wars-2013-4">capture/kill missions</a> in addition to training and deploying a <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/09/22/AR2010092206141.html">3,000-member Afghan paramilitary force</a>.
Gellman and Miller note that the Agency's increasingly dominant slice of intelligence community's (IC) $52.6 billion budget over the last 12 years "will likely stun outside experts."

<li>The CIA workforce has grown from about 17,000 ten years ago to 21,575 this year.</li>
<li>In 2013 U.S. spy agencies were projected to spend $4.9 billion on “overseas contingency operations” — such as operations in Iraq and Afghanistan — and the CIA accounted for roughly half of that sum.</li>
<li>The CIA requested $14.7 billion in total funding for 2013, which is 28% of the total IC budget and $4.2 billion more than the NSA.</li>
<li>In 1994, the only other time Black Budget information was leaked, the CIA accounted for just $4.8 billion of a budget that totaled $43.4 billion in 2012 dollars (i.e., 11% of the IC budget).</li>
