Pankaj Tripathi to star in Vajpayee's biopic

With the launch of <keyword id="1543410" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio-Infocomm">Reliance Jio Infocomm</keyword>’s 4G, there has been a tremendous increase in smartphones that support voice over long-term evolution (VoLTE) feature. The demand has nearly doubled in the past few months. 
 
The interest for VoLTE-featured devices was shown by consumers in small towns as many people in these places associate the technology with free calls that the company is offering. 
 <keyword id="2003276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword> is offering free phone calls for life and supports only VoLTE calling and this has made a tremendous increase in interest of consumers in VoLTE supporting devices. Internet searches for phones under Rs 5,000 VoLTE phones have increased and this has made the phone vendors to launch more phones supporting VoLTE feature at lower prices. 
 "To a consumer in tier 3 and tier 4 cities or lower down, VoLTE means free calls - because of <keyword id="6354504" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio">Reliance Jio</keyword> - that's why we see more demand coming compared to urban and tier 1and 2 cities. Tier 1and 2 level consumers understand the technology and know that VoLTE will give them better quality HD voice calling, due to three-four Chinese brands promoting their phones in such a way, but consumers in the lower tiers are not as aware of the new technology,” said <keyword id="676735" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pankaj-Rana">Pankaj Rana</keyword>, head of smartphones business at <keyword id="6367990" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Panasonic">Panasonic</keyword> told ET. 
 
According to the data by 911mobiles.com, Internet search volumes for VoLTE phones jumped 40 per cent sequentially in the quarter ended September just a few days after Jio launched its 4G. 
 
The increased demand for VoLTE supporting devices in smaller towns is because of the people there being most prices sensitive. 
 "With the launch of Jio services, we expect VoLTE capability to be a default functionality in smartphones and the ASP (average selling price) can penetrate sub-$50 (Rs 3,350) price band which will further drive the adoption,” <keyword id="1943940" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tarun-Pathak">Tarun Pathak</keyword>, senior analyst at <keyword id="6439913" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="CounterPoint-Research">Counterpoint Research</keyword> told ET. 
 
By September end, 350 of the 1,132 models in the market were VoLTE-enabled. 
 “Six months ago, 4G had become hygiene for a metro consumer, we're beginning to see that with VoLTE now because of Jio,” <keyword id="400990" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax-Informatics">Micromax Informatics</keyword>' chief marketing officer, <keyword id="232063" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shubhajit-Sen">Shubhajit Sen</keyword> told ET. 
 
VoLTE allows a telco to offer both voice and data without switching between bands, with voice being just another application that rides on an LTE data network, a technology that Jio has adopted. This compares with 170 out of 800 models, or close to one in five, till June.

<ul><li>The four new <keyword id="1007409" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="heron" source="Orion">Heron</keyword> Mark-2 drones have satellite communication capability.</li><li>The drones can be equipped with different types of weapons too.</li></ul> In a mega capability boost, the <keyword id="15141" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="indian-air-force" source="Orion">Indian Air Force</keyword> has inducted its latest <keyword id="18385593" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="heron-mark-2" source="Orion">Heron Mark 2</keyword> drones, which have strike capability and can carry out surveillance along the borders with both China and Pakistan in a single sortie itself. The four new Heron Mark-2 drones, which can be equipped with long-range missiles and other weapons systems, have been deployed at a forward air base in the northern sector, where Team witnessed their operations. The drones with satellite communication capability have given a long desired capability to the Indian Air Force, as its drones can operate at very long distances for close to 36 hours at a stretch and can also laser illuminate enemy targets from very long ranges to help fighter aircraft destroy them using their long-range weapons. "The Heron Mark 2 is a very capable drone. This is capable of longer endurance and has 'beyond line of sight' capability. With this, the entire country can be surveilled from the same place," the commanding officer of the drone squadron, Wing Commander Pankaj Rana, told ANI in an exclusive interaction at the base. He said the longer endurance also ensures that multiple missions can be flown and multiple sectors can be addressed in one mission itself. "The drone simply amalgamates into the Intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance matrix of the Indian Air Force," Rana said. Highlighting the major strength of the drone, Rana said it can provide 24x7 surveillance of targets. Modern avionics and engines have ensured that the operational ceilings of the aircraft have been increased. He said the drone can operate in any weather and on any terrain to address its targets and complete the mission. "Flying from here, the drone can cover both the adversaries in the same sortie itself," Rana said while highlighting the major strengths of the latest unmanned machine of the force. Defence officials said the drones are capable of being equipped with weapons, and work towards weaponising them is in progress. The drones can be equipped with different types of weapons, as the original equipment manufacturers can equip it with air-to-ground missiles, air-to-ground anti-tank weapons, and bombs. Squadron Leader Arpit Tandon, who is a pilot of the Heron Mark 2 drone, said the new version of the Heron drones has multiple advantages over the previous versions, which started getting inducted into the IAF in the early 2000s. "The payloads and the onboard avionics of the Heron Mark 2 can operate at sub-zero temperatures and in any weather condition. This is helping the Indian Air Force achieve footprints over any type of terrain," he said. The Indian Air Force is also working on Project Cheetah, under which around 70 of the Indian Armed Forces' Heron drones are to be upgraded with satellite communication links and weaponised to meet the requirements of the armed forces. The Indian armed forces are also getting 31 Predator drones, which are in the high altitude, long endurance category and are helping the Navy presently to cover large tracts of the Indian Ocean region. India is getting a version of the drones that can be equipped with weapons and will have sensors for different roles in different terrains. Fifteen of these drones are to be operated by the Indian Navy, while the other two forces would be getting eight each. (ANI)

By the end of this fiscal, <keyword id="207192" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Panasonic-India">Panasonic India</keyword> wants to increase its mobile phone revenue to more than double of what it is. The figure that they are aiming is estimated to be Rs 2,500 crore. The Japanese company also aims to double its market share, relying on aggressive 4G launch plans, backed by higher marketing spending. The confidence stems from the revenue growth it had in the last fiscal, increasing from Rs 600 crores in 2014-15 to Rs 1200 crores. 
 
"The mobile division contributed 15% towards overall India revenue, which we want to take to 25% by the end of the ongoing fiscal," Pankaj Rana, business head - mobility division, Panasonic India, told ET. 
 
As per the plans, the company plans to launch eight new smartphones in the next one and a half month, out of which seven would be 4G VoLTE smartphones. 
 
As of now, its portfolio includes ten smartphones (seven of them being 4G-enabled), ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 14,000. 
 
In the coming year, one can expect 30-35 new smartphones from Panasonic India, which would be priced between Rs 4,000 and Rs 20,000. Talking about marketing spending, Panasonic aims to spend about Rs 220 crore on marketing, out of which almost a fifth would be used for digital marketing. This figure is also almost doubled from last year’s Rs 120 crore.

<keyword id="6367990" type="TOPIC" weightage="100" keywordseo="Panasonic">Panasonic</keyword> has almost suddenly realized what it has been missing out on in India and that's the <keyword id="28168" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="smartphone">smartphone</keyword> market, which happens to be the fastest growing smartphone market in the world. Today the Japanese electronics giant announced that its going to launch 11 smartphones in the next 45 days leading to the festive season here in India. Starting with the launch of two new phones Eluga A3 and A3 Pro priced at Rs. 11,290 and Rs. 12,790 respectively. 
 
Panasonic sees India as their main growth market for Mobiles and in April this year, Panasonic took over from their distribution partner and started handling the Mobile business independently. The company has already hired over 400 sales people and about 150 R&amp;D employees to work in the mobility division of the company. It is the biggest announcement for Panasonic mobiles so far and the company says it's just the beginning. Panasonic is already gearing up for a much bigger launch by the end of the year where it is planning to launch a series of premium phones that will cost upwards of Rs. 20,000. So, it’s clear that the company is aggressively trying to find a space for itself in the Indian smartphone market. 
 
With the kind of competition Panasonic has in India now, one would expect nothing but aggression from Panasonic but the company says that the strategy is not to gain market share, Pankaj Rana, Business Head, Mobility Division, Panasonic India says, “Market is tough but our objective to be in this business is not gain market share or create huge turnover or huge volume, we want to be in the hands of young customer of India. Our strategy to enter into the mobile phone business is to create big synergy for brand Panasonic in the Indian market.” 
 
So Panasonic essentially wants to grab the attention of the young consumers which the company has not been able to do so far by mainly selling home appliances. Now with major focus on smartphones, Panasonic hopes to capture the attention of the millennial who can potentially be consumers of their overall portfolio of products. 
 Panasonic also wants to cash in on the existing offline presence it has in India. It has been selling its home appliances for a long time in India and the new smartphones will already have offline presence through the Panasonic brand stores. Many smartphone players in India like <keyword id="2210217" type="TOPIC" weightage="20" keywordseo="OnePlus">OnePlus</keyword>, <keyword id="874458" type="TOPIC" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword>, Moto have invested heavily to up their offline presence in the last two years in order to penetrate the market better. 
 
With presence of about 300 stores, Panasonic may have an upper hand as it does not have to invest in infrastructure in the country but it is not going to be easy for the electronics major to find a space in the now over crowded -mainly Chinese brands- smartphone market of India.

Panasonic to launch 11 smartphones in the next 45 days, says it's not looking to gain market share

Students of IIT Roorkee emerged as overall winners of Mobivation 2016, <keyword id="6367990" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Panasonic">Panasonic</keyword>'s Smartphone Open-Innovation contest, thereby winning cash prize worth Rs 1 lakh and Panasonic smartphones. 
 Initiated in the month of August 2016, the contest invited innovative ideas from students enrolled full-time in <keyword id="57604" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-delhi">IIT Delhi</keyword> &amp; Roorkee, DTU Delhi and NSIT Delhi in areas of Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Innovation in Hardware and Software in terms of Smartphones (Android Platform). 
 
The winners for the Panasonic Open-Innovation contest in the Software category were Shubham Goyal, Chirag Maheshwari and Rahul Babbar, team CodeSquad from IIT Roorkee. Students of Delhi Technological University, Prempal Singh and Pranav Gulati team Genesis were winners of the Hardware category. The category winning teams also received a cash reward along with Panasonic smartphones and commendation certificates. 
 
The innovation projects were reviewed by a jury comprising of Product Experts, Technical Masters &amp; Marketing Connoisseurs having vast experience in their respective fields. Judges scored each team on a scale of 1 (Poor) to 10 (excellent). All the submissions were adjudged on the criteria of their innovativeness, feasibility, usability, relevance and overall impact on masses. 
 
“The winners were selected from over 218 nominations. We are grateful to IIT Delhi &amp; Roorkee, DTU Delhi and NSIT Delhi students for these exceptional ideas. Panasonic believes in the power of innovation and we allowed teams to think creatively and outside-the-box, be innovative and inventive in their approach. Our Panasonic Open-Innovation contest aimed to help these students relate concepts they learn in the classroom to real world, which can further motivate them to look deeper into specific concepts instead of merely studying what is required.
