Big brands, chain stores boost retail developments in tier-2 cities

Electric two-wheeler maker <keyword id="10771675" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kabira-mobility" source="Orion">Kabira Mobility</keyword> on Friday said it has secured USD 50 million (around Rs 412 crore) funding from Qatar-based Al-Abdulla Group. The Panjim-based company plans to utilise the capital to fund its future growth in the country. The company plans to ramp up production capacity of its electric bikes KM3000, KM4000, introduce new products and enhance sales infrastructure across the country. The company currently has an installed production capacity of 40,000 units a month at its Dharwad-based plant in Karnataka. In an interaction with PTI, Kabira Mobility CEO Jaibir <keyword id="3681361" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="siwach" source="Orion">Siwach</keyword> said the company has raised USD 50 million through equity sale. The companies, however, did not share the exact details of the deal. "We are also looking to set up a new manufacturing facility around Jewar in Uttar Pradesh with an installed capacity of 1.25 lakh units a month," he noted. Around 1,550 Israelis left stranded in India due to 21-day nationwide lockdown since March 24 midnight have flown back home over the week in seven flights, a diplomat said on Wednesday. "We have flown about 1,550 Israelis home (Tel Aviv) in seven rescue flights from New Delhi, Mumbai and Goa (Panjim), Isareli consulate deputy consul-general <keyword id="7291644" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ariel-Seidman">Ariel Seidman</keyword> told IANS here. The Israelis, including tourists, flew in two Israeli airlines El Al and Arkia and state-run Air India. In the last rescue flight from Dabolim airport in Panjim on Monday night, 105 Israelis, including 95 stuck in north India, and 10 from Karnataka, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu flew in the chartered plane to Tel Aviv. "The last batch of 105 Israelis boarded an Arkia chartered plane on way to Tel Aviv from <keyword id="6357117" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="bangkok">Bangkok</keyword> with 65 Israelis who were also stranded in Thailand," recalled Seidman. All the Israelis who flew from India paid for their airfare. "The 10 Israelis drove to Panjim in cars on Monday after staying overnight in Bengaluru," said the diplomat. Of the 10 from south India, a couple of them are in their mid-40s and one aged above 70. The deputy consul thanked the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu police for facilitating the tourists' drive to Panjim, 590km northwest of Bengaluru. "The tourists had police escort all the way from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to Goa," noted Seidman. Karnataka deputy police commissioner M. Ashwini supervised the tourists escort through the state border to Goa. Cyclonic storm 'Tauktae' likely to reach Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva districts on Monday, IMD issues 'orange' alert

New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) The deep depression in the Arabian Sea strengthened into a cyclonic storm 'Nisarga' on Tuesday morning and will make landfall close to Alibag, 94 kms south of Mumbai on the afternoon of June 3. It will make landfall as a 'severe cyclonic storm' with a wind speed of 100-110 kmh gusting to 120 kmh. The cyclonic storm is currently located 280 km west-southwest of Panjim (Goa), 430km south-southwest of Mumbai (Maharashtra) and 640 km south-southwest of Surat (Gujarat). Dr Sunita Devi, India Meteorological Department's in-charge of cyclones, said, "The cyclone will further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm in the next 12 hours." It will cross north Maharashtra and adjoining south Gujarat coast between Harihareshwar and Daman, close to Alibag in Maharashtra's Raigad district during the afternoon of June 3. IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Monday said that the cyclonic storm will affect the coastal districts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, more than Gujarat and neighbouring states. The storm surge is expected to be one to two metres above the astronomical tide and is very likely to inundate low-lying areas of Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts at the time of landfall. Fishermen are warned not to venture into the sea. 31 NDRF teams have also been deployed to carry out rescue operations. Widespread damage is also expected. Roxy Mathew Koll, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, said, "Cyclone Nisarga is about to scrape around Mumbai on June 3. If that happens, it will be the first-ever cyclone in recorded history to hit the Maharashtra coast in June." Another researcher of the same institute said that it will be the "second cyclone" in recorded history that will be hitting the Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season i.e. April-June. Cyclone 'Nisarga' to make landfall near Alibag in M'rashtra

Mumbai, Apr 5 () Air India has asked passengers who travelled in four of its flights in March to follow necessary isolation or quarantine after three passengers on those flights tested positive for coronavirus. Two of these flights were from Goa to Mumbai, one from Mumbai to Delhi and another from Delhi to Patna. In an appeal to passengers who were onboard these flights, the airline said it has got the information that three passengers who travelled with the fights have been found infected with coronavirus. "As informed by Disaster Management Department of Bihar, one passenger who travelled from Mumbai to Delhi by AI-101 of March 22 and from Delhi-to Patna on AI-415 on March 23 has been found COVID-9 positive on March 31," the airline said in a tweet. As appealed by the department, passengers who were on this flight are required to follow necessary isolation/quarantine process. The national carrier also made similar appeals to the passengers of its Mumbai-Goa flights, AI 883 and AI 661, on March 22 and March 19, respectively. "As informed by Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, Directorate of Health Services, Goa, one passenger who travelled from Mumbai to Panjim in Goa on Air India flight AI 661 on March 19 has been found COVID-9 positive. As appealed by integrated disease surveillance programme, Goa, passengers for this flight are required to follow for necessary isolation quarantine," Air India said in a tweet on Saturday. New Delhi, June 1 (IANS) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said that the depression in the Arabian Sea is slated to further intensify into a cyclonic storm 'Nisarga' and cross north Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar in Raigard district and Daman on June 3. According to IMD's scientist Ananda Kumar Das, the depression is located about 370 kilometres southwest of Goa's Panjim, 690 kilometres south-southwest of Mumbai and 920 kilometres south-south-west of Gujarat's Surat. "It is very likely to move nearly northwards initially till June 2 morning and then recurve north-northeastwards and cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar (Raigad, Maharashtra) and Daman during evening or night of June 3," Das stated. Harihareshwar town is over 200 kilometres from both Mumbai and Pune, and is over 360 kms from Daman. The well-marked low-pressure area over the south-east and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep area had concentrated into a depression in the early hours on Monday morning. A low pressure area and a depression are the first two levels on the IMD's eight-category scale used to classify cyclones based on their intensity. The depression is likely to intensify into a deep depression by Monday evening. It will further become furious and turn into a cyclonic storm in the wee hours of the morning on June 2 and then into a severe cyclonic storm by evening or night of June 3. When it becomes a severe cyclonic storm, it will have a wind speed of 105-115, gusting to 125 kilometre per hour at 5.30 p.m. on June 3. According to the IMD, it again will weaken into a cyclonic storm with wind speed of 60-70, gusting to 80 kilometre per hour at 5.30 p.m. on June 4. IMD's cyclone track shows that Nisarga will cross very close to the Mumbai coast while entering the land. Central and state government agencies have been informed and are taking the steps," he added. Dr Sunitha Devi, scientist in-charge for cyclones, said that the depression is currently located about 340 km southwest of Goa's Panjim, and 850 km south-south-west of Gujarat's Surat. In a similar vein, Blue Tokai aims to give India’s coffee drinkers, traditionally used to instant coffee or the likes of Barista and Cafe Coffee Day, a transformative experience with its specialty blends. The idea for Blue Tokai took root in the minds of the co-founders, Matt Chittaranjan and Namrata Asthana, when they moved from Chennai to Delhi in 2012 and found themselves out of options for fresh and accessible specialty coffee. It all started with some farm visits Matt and Namrata visited a number of coffee estates in southern India, mainly in Karnataka, with the end goal of sourcing beans for the domestic retail market. Rhea says that the farmers scoffed at the couple upon hearing this. They said that there wasn’t a market for specialty coffee in India. Before Blue Tokai and other specialty coffee brands came along, these coffee farmers mainly exported their produce. India ranks among the largest producers of coffee in the world, but exports around 70% of its beans to the other countries, most notably Italy and Australia. Blue Tokai started operations as Starbucks was ramping up its presence in India through a joint venture with Tata- an indicator that Indian consumers were ready for change. “In the last few years, specialty coffee has become the go-to choice for a specific kind of Indian,” Rhea says, “the upwardly mobile metro-dwellers who are used to a certain lifestyle. They’re looking to curate their world with good brands and are willing to travel lengths to get their daily dose of caffeine, even though they don’t necessarily have to.” In around five years, Starbucks’ has already reached a 100 outlets in India, buoyed by an aspirational urban middle class that is looking to sip local brews while working at cafes. Apart of raising consumer awareness, Starbucks’ growth has demonstrated that the coffee market is taking off in India, and that there is room for other brands. In addition to Blue Tokai, a number of homegrown coffee brands have sprung up in the last few years - Bangalore’s Flying Squirrel and Third Wave Coffee, Goa’s Sussegado and Mumbai’s The Indian Bean - all of which have looked to plug the market gap with their domestically sourced, specialty blends. Even though they’re all vying for shelf space in retail stores, selling wholesale to restaurants and experimenting with the cafe model, their national reach is made possible through e-commerce. The end result? Indian consumers are spoilt for choice. Blue Tokai’s retail customer base mostly comprises people between the ages of 27 and 35 who are more aware of their choices and what they’re consuming. When asked what sets Blue Tokai’s customers apart from those of big chains, Rhea quips, “Our customers are people who know the difference between good coffee and great coffee.” Rhea joined Blue Tokai just as it was launching its first cafe, which was attached to its roastery in Delhi’s Saiyad Ul Ajaib area. In her first few months, she was privy to the roastery’s escalation to a full-service cafe. “With each day came more customer feedback to act on, more staff to train and more additions to the menu.” She was also charged with leading the company’s social media strategy and building a community through events like brewing classes. “Why the cafe?” I ask Rhea. The idea was to have an espresso bar where prospective customers could taste their coffee before purchasing a particular blend of roasted beans. Blue Tokai was primarily in the business of online sales before launching the cafe. However, Matt and Namrata soon realised that no one in the market was offering good, freshly-brewed coffee for direct purchase. “We started selling cortados, flat whites and pour overs,” Rhea says, “and once that took off, people said that they wanted food options, WiFi and power outlets.” Caffeine-induced growth The company’s growth is impressive.There were around 15 to 20 employees at the company when she joined. There are now 140. I’m talking to Rhea in Blue Tokai’s fifth cafe, at Gurgaon’s Bristol Chowk. They currently have seven outlets, spread across Bombay and Delhi, with an eighth one slated to open in Panjim, Goa by the third week of April. “We never intend to go the franchising route,” Rhea explains, “all our cafes will be owned and operated by us so we can maintain our quality”. Rhea is currently Blue Tokai’s head of marketing and partnerships. Her role covers all three facets of Blue Tokai’s business: the online retail segment, the wholesale segment, which involves supply arrangements with 400 partners such as restaurants, hotels and corporates, and finally, the cafes. She has more than a few things on her plate at the moment. She’s building a team to handle cafe operations and customer service on a zonal basis. She’s working to streamline Blue Tokai’s social media presence. She’s growing the B2B sales program. She’s tying up with partners for a range of events such as India Art Fair, Magnetic Fields and Design ID. She’s onboarding more food partners to strengthen the menu at Blue Tokai’s cafes. She’s also working with smaller food and beverage brands on cross-promotion opportunities and pop-ups. It seems that this emphasis on community has paid off. “We have amazingly loyal customers,” Rhea says. “We try to be as approachable as possible, which helps us get a lot of constructive feedback from customers.” “What else sets Blue Tokai apart?” I ask her. It’s the kind of ingratiating question so common in interviews with company insiders, one that invariably unlocks a number of empty buzzwords and feel-good catchphrases. But Rhea doesn’t disappoint: “We are farm-to-cup in the truest sense.” The company’s purpose, from the very beginning, was to cut out the middleman and give its coffee farmers the credit they deserve. Most coffee chains or distributors buy their coffee through a series of intermediaries and sell their products weeks after the beans have been roasted. Blue Tokai sources the beans from 11 estates, as detailed on its website, roasts them at least a few times a week and sells them directly in cafes or ships them within one or two days. Rhea also alludes to the company’s emphasis on transparency. “Everything we do is very consciously done. All our products go out with a roast date and the details of the estate that it was sourced from. Our roasteries in Bombay and Delhi are open to the public so they get a first-hand insight into the roasting process.” We’re nearing the end of our interview. I ask Rhea about Blue Tokai’s plans for the short-to-medium term. “We want to make our coffee more accessible,” she says, “ the idea is to open more cafes and be in as many places as possible.” In addition to Panjim, the company is considering expanding into other Tier-2 cities. “People in places like Jaipur and Surat drink A LOT of coffee,” Rhea explains. Blue Tokai is also planning to expand its product slate. “We’re looking to sell brewed coffee through retail channels - bottled, cold brew and nitro, mainly. The market for preserved, ready-to-drink coffee has a lot of potential.” Rhea needs to get back to work, her phone has been ringing incessantly over the past hour. I conclude with one last question. “Has your experience at Blue Tokai made you confident about starting your own company one day?” “Yes” she replies almost immediately. She laughs as she gets up. “It’s hard to imagine how it wouldn’t be coffee-related, though.”
