Two deaths were reported from Rohtas district while Patna, East Champaran and Gaya have accounted for one casualty each. Details like comorbidities of the deceased or their time of deaths were not known. Patna district now accounts for the maximum number of six casualties, and also tops the state in terms of the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases. A total of 713 people have tested positive in the district so far. The district has witnessed a steep hike in its tally in the last 10 days during which close to 100 people have tested positive in Paliganj sub-division alone. District Magistrate Kumar Ravi has ordered an inquiry to ascertain whether there was violation of norms at a marriage ceremony that was held on June 15 in Deehpali village and which appears to have triggered the biggest infection chain in the state so far. According to a release issued by the district administration, the sub-divisional officer of Paliganj has been asked to investigate as to whether measures like wearing of masks and social distancing were observed and the cap of 50 attendees was followed. "If any violation comes to the fore, stern legal action will be taken against those responsible for the arrangements," said the release. The groom, who was suffering from fever at the time of the wedding, died two days after the marriage. It was not known whether he was infected since his family members cremated the body without waiting for authorities to collect the samples. Nonetheless, the administration tested samples of 259 people in the vicinity subsequently and 95 tested positive for COVID-19, said the release adding that eight containment zones have been set up in the affected areas. COVID-19 cases have been reported from all 38 districts in the state and only two Jamui and Sheohar have respective tallies lower than 100. Besides Patna, other districts which have reported a high number of cases are Bhagalpur 494, Madhubani 456, Begusarai 421 and Siwan 412. State Health Secretary Lokesh Kumar Singh said that a high number of fresh cases notwithstanding, Bihar's recovery rate of 77 per cent is significantly higher than the national average of 59 per cent. He also said the state has succeeded in increasing its testing capacity and 8,231 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. The total number of samples tested till date was 2.20 lakh.

With five fresh casualties, COVID-19 toll reaches 68 in Bihar

Patna, Jun 30 () A wedding ceremony in rural Patna a fortnight ago where the groom was running high fever, two days before he died and his body cremated without being tested for COVID 19, appears to have set off the biggest infection chain in Bihar so far, health department officials said on Tuesday. More than 100 people have tested positive in Paliganj sub-division of Patna district, about 55 km from the state capital, in the last few days, out of over 350 who have been tested upon contact tracing, they said. Fifteen of his relatives who attended the wedding tested positive for the contagion and apparently infected others. The officials, who requested anonymity, said the groom was a software engineer based in Gurugram and had returned home for his marriage in the last week of May. A few days after the 'tilak' ceremony, he started showing symptoms of the disease. On June 15, the date of wedding, he was running high fever and wanted the ceremony to be deferred, but relented upon the insistence of family members who made him swallow paracetamol tablets and go through the rituals. On June 17, his condition deteriorated significantly and family members made a dash to AIIMS, Patna, but he died on the way. The body was cremated in a huff, without the authorities being informed. But somebody telephoned the district magistrate and narrated the whole episode. All close relatives of the deceased, who attended the ceremony, were tested on June 19. Of them 15 tested positive, the officials said. As a measure to contain the spread of the disease, a special camp was set up at the village where the marriage took place on June 24-26 during which samples of 364 people were collected. Of them, 86 tested positive, the officials added. The sudden explosion of the dreaded coronavirus has triggered panic in the area. Although most who tested positive were asymptomatic, they have been admitted to isolation centres in Bihta and Phulwarisharif. Block Development Officer Chiranjeev Pandey said Meetha Kuan, Khagari Mohalla and parts of Paliganj Bazaar have been sealed for thorough sanitisation. Patna district happens to be the worst-affected in Bihar with 699 confirmed cases till date and five casualties, according to figures provided by the administration. The number of active cases is 372. On Monday, when the state witnessed its biggest single day spike with 394 cases, Patna district accounted for more than 20 per cent of these. Patna, Jul 3 () The father of a man who recently died here after showing coronavirus-like symptoms has been booked for violating guidelines issued in the wake of the pandemic at the wedding ceremony, which had set off the biggest infection chain in Bihar, the district administration said on Friday. The FIR was lodged late Thursday against Ambika Chaudhary, whose son died on June 17, two days after he tied the knot while running a high fever, it said in a statement. The body was cremated by family members before the authorities could get wind of the episode. But, testing camps were set up at the Deehpali village falling under Paliganj block and out of 259 samples that were collected, 95 tested positive. Subsequently, all those found infected were sent to isolation centres while an inquiry was ordered by District Magistrate Kumar Ravi to look into any violation of norms at the wedding ceremony. "It was found that more than 50 people had attended the ceremony and social distancing and wearing of masks was not ensured. Accordingly, BDO Chiranjeev Pandey has lodged an FIR against Chaudhary at Paliganj police station under relevant provisions," the statement added. The deceased groom was a software engineer based in Gurugram who had returned home in the last week of May to get married. Widespread protests against the 'Agnipath' scheme for the recruitment of armed forces have spread to several districts in Uttar Pradesh. Bulandshahr, Meerut, Agra, Mathura, Varanasi, Unnao, Gorakhpur, Gonda, Rae Bareli and Ballia are among the districts that have witnessed protests, with youth demanding the scheme's withdrawal. In several districts, the police had to resort to lathi charge and fire teargas shells to disperse the mob. In Bulandshahr, protesters blocked the busy GT Road. "We strongly oppose the new recruitment scheme. We want the old recruitment scheme back," one of the protesters said. Youth also gathered along the Agra-Delhi highway, seeking the revival of the old recruitment policy in the armed forces. Traffic was blocked for several hours on this route. Agra Senior Superintendent of Police, Sudhir Kumar Singh, said: "A large number of students come to Agra to prepare for exams through coaching centres. These job aspirants reached here and blocked the road." In Rae Bareli and Gonda, the protesters raised slogans and blocked traffic. "Agnipath is a golden opportunity for the youth to join the defence system and serve the country. As the recruitment was stalled for the last two years, many were deprived of the opportunity to join the army," Singh tweeted. "Therefore, keeping in mind the future of the youth, on the instructions of the Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi, the government has increased the age limit for the recruitment of Agniveers from 21 years to 23 years this time. This one time relaxation has been given. This will entitle a lot of youth to become Agniveers," said the Defence minister in a subsequent tweet. "I heartily thank the Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi for his concern and sensitivity towards the future of the youth. I appeal to the youth that the process of recruitment in the army is going to start in few days. They must start their preparation for it," Rajnath Singh tweeted. Considering the widespread protests, the government on Thursday allowed a one-time age waiver for the scheme considering that recruitment was stalled for the last two years. The situation continued to be tense as a large number of protesters remained in the station and on the tracks. The Railway Protection Force, Government Railway Police and city police were trying to bring the situation under control. Additional forces were rushed to the area which resembled a battle zone. Authorities have cancelled all the trains. With the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) buses also being targeted outside the station, the corporation suspended bus services in the area. Violence rocked the railway station here as hundreds of youth went on a rampage, setting afire East Coast Express. Passengers ran for their safety. Several bogies were gutted. Raising slogans against the Central government, the protesters also torched bogies of another train on the station, stalls, display boards and other railway property. They also dumped parcel articles on the tracks and set them afire. The protesters, who were raising slogans of 'Jai jawan Jai kisan' and 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' ,demanded that the government scrap the recently announced scheme and continue the existing system of recruitment. The youth were angry that the government cancelled the recruitment examination for which they had been preparing for the last 3-4 years. Under the Agnipath scheme, there is a provision of six months training and deployment anywhere in the country, including on the borders connected to Pakistan and China. Partially skilled jawans cannot survive on the border. Patna, Apr 29 () A total of 37 people, includingtwo infants, tested positive for COVID-19 in Bihar onWednesday, taking the total number of cases in the state to403, a top Health department official said.According to Principal Secretary, Health, Sanjay KumarBuxar reported the maximum number of 14 cases during the day,raising the districts total to 40, making it the third worstaffected after Patna and Munger.Twelve people tested positive in Naya Bhojpur villagealone, which accounts for most of the cases in Buxar. Thefresh cases include two girls aged six months and one year,besides a boy and a girl - both aged eight years. The oldestpatient happens to be a 65-year-old man. Seven patients fromthe village are females.Two young men, aged 16 and 18 years, tested positivein the block headquarters of Dumraon.The day also saw West Champaran becoming 29th of thestates 38 districts to be affected by the outbreak. All thepatients are from Yogapatti block and happen to be males inthe age group of 27-40 years.Their infection trail was being ascertained, said theprincipal secretary.Four persons tested positive in Darbhanga town andaccording to District Magistrate Thyagarajan they happen to bewife, brother, sister-in-law and mother-in-law of a 35-year-old migrant from Delhi who had returned last week and testedpositive a few days ago.The state capital reported three more cases, one eachfrom Raja Bazar locality in the city and Paliganj andNaubatpur in rural Patna. The district retains the spot forthe second worst affected with 42 cases after Munger where 92have tested positive so far.Three more people tested positive in Rohtas, two fromthe district headquarters of Rohtas besides an eight-year-oldboy from Badahari. The district now has 34 cases, all of whichare active.Patna and Buxar have 37 cases each while Munger has80).Bhojpur and Begusarai reported two cases each. Bothdistricts account for an equal number of 11 cases, though fivepeople have recovered in Begusarai as against only one inBhojpur.According to the superintendent of Begusarai Sadarhospital, where corona patients from the district are lodgedin isolation wards, both patients happen to be men in their40s and actively associated with the Tablighi Jamaat. Whileone had attended its congregation at Nizamuddin in New Delhilast month, the other had taken part in a gathering at BiharSharif in Nalanda district, which is one of the hotspots inthe state.One person each tested positive in Sitamarhi,Aurangabad, Madhepura and Vaishali districts.Two COVID 19 patients one each from Vaishali andMunger have died while 65 have recovered fully.Close to 300 cases have been reported in the state inthe last 10 days.The number of samples tested so far is 21,180. The CPI(M) which competed on four seats has won two seats, and the CPI which contested in six seats has also won two seats. With the win in nine seats and leads in three others, the CPI(ML) hopes to be the biggest gainer in the Grand Alliance. In the 2015 assembly election, the CPI(ML) had bagged three seats. It had won seven seats in the 2005 polls. The party secured six seats in the 2000 election and in 2010, it had failed to get any seat. "The leads so far are on expected lines and we hope to catch up in three more seats. This was a different kind of election. This was more of a people's movement. We banked on young candidates like student leaders, candidates who were part of farmer struggles and working class people. That seemed to have worked. "The 25-point campaign charter of the Mahagathbandhan is the demands emerging in the course of the teachers' movement, skill workers' movement over the last few years. The Left parties have set the agenda, the people of Bihar set the agenda for us. This is a big gain for the Left," CPI(ML) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya said. Party leaders also highlighted how cadres worked among the poor, became first responders in crisis among their constituents and led movements against unemployment, corruption in education and farm rights, to gain the trust of voters. "We have been working with the poor in the state since the 1990s, mainly with the Dalits and the EBCs. We have played the lonely vocal opposition voice in the Vidhan Sabha on the rights of the poor. Over the last five years, we have built an image which is based on goodwill and faith. Electoral victories are not just about numbers, it is about chemistry. This time things came together. "This election, wherever the RJD and CPI(ML) have come together, the Grand Alliance has done well," N Balaji, the national president of CPI(ML) students' wing All India Students Association, said. On his party's decision to go with the RJD despite being opposed to it earlier, Balaji, who campaigned extensively in Bihar, said the party (RJD) currently led by Tejashwi Yadav and the one led by his father Lalu Prasad were "two different entities". CPI(ML) leaders also pointed out that this was perhaps the first time that the youth and student leaders had actively participated and some even contested the elections. Out of the 19 candidates that the party fielded this time, six are under 35 years of age and 10 are below 50. Among the party's winning candidates, Sandeep Saurav, 33, won from Paliganj constituency after defeating the JD(U) candidate. Saurav, a former JNUSU general secretary and an AISA activist, gave up his job as an assistant professor to fight the polls. CPI-ML's other candidate Manoj Manzil, 36, won by over 50,000 votes from Agiaon. He was earlier arrested after filing his nomination from the constituency. Manzil is known for leading the 'Sadak Par School' movement in Bhojpur against unemployment. He is also a prominent leader among the Dalit community. Ajit Kumar Singh (34), who won the Dumraon seat, is the state president of Revolutionary Youth Association. He is a former AISA Bihar state secretary and has completed his doctoral studies in history of farmers' agitation in Bihar. (Eds: Upgrading) Patna, Apr 29 () A total of 37 people, including two infants, tested positive for COVID-19 in Bihar on Wednesday, taking the total number of cases in the state to 403, a top Health department official said.According to Principal Secretary, Health, Sanjay Kumar Buxar reported the maximum number of 14 cases during the day, raising the districts total to 40, making it the third worstaffected after Patna and Munger.Twelve people tested positive in Naya Bhojpur village alone, which accounts for most of the cases in Buxar. The fresh cases include two girls aged six months and one year, besides a boy and a girl - both aged eight years. The oldest patient happens to be a 65-year-old man. Seven patients from the village are females.Two young men, aged 16 and 18 years, tested positive in the block headquarters of Dumraon.The day also saw West Champaran becoming the 29th of the states 38 districts to be affected by the outbreak. All the patients are from Yogapatti block and happen to be males inthe age group of 27-40 years.Their infection trail was being ascertained, the principal secretary said.Four people tested positive in Darbhanga town and according to District Magistrate Thyagarajan they happen to be wife, brother, sister-in-law and mother-in-law of a 35-year-old migrant from Delhi who had returned last week and tested positive a few days ago.The state capital reported three more cases, one each from Raja Bazar locality in the city and Paliganj and Naubatpur in rural Patna. The district retains the spot for the second worst affected with 42 cases after Munger where 92 have tested positive so far.Three more people tested positive in Rohtas, two from the district headquarters of Rohtas, besides an eight-year-old boy from Badahari. The district now has 34 cases, all of which are active.Patna and Buxar have 37 cases each while Munger has 80.Bhojpur and Begusarai reported two cases each. Both the districts account for an equal number of 11 cases, though five people have recovered in Begusarai as against only one inBhojpur.According to the superintendent of Begusarai Sadar Hospital, where COVID-19 patients from the district are lodged in isolation wards, both the patients happen to be men in their40s and actively associated with the Tablighi Jamaat religious congregation. While one had attended its congregation at Nizamuddin in New Delhi last month, the other had taken part in a gathering at Bihar Sharif in Nalanda district, which is one of the hotspots in the state.One person each tested positive in Sitamarhi, Aurangabad, Madhepura and Vaishali districts.Two COVID-19 patients, one each from Vaishali and Munger, have died while 65 have recovered fully.Close to 300 cases have been reported in the state in the last 10 days.The number of samples tested so far is 21,180.
