Islamabad [<keyword id="3001" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan" source="Orion">Pakistan</keyword>], July 21 (ANI): Pakistan's Information Minister Attaullah Tarar on July 15 announced that the government was seeking to ban the jailed former Prime Minister <keyword id="19914692" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Imran-Khan" source="keywords">Imran Khan</keyword>'s Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party and press <keyword id="21323468" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Treason-charges" source="keywords">treason charges</keyword> against Khan under Article 6 of the country's Constitution. The decision was met with immediate criticism with the PTI quoting Imran Khan as saying that banning of any political party amounts to "murder of democracy." "Our party was already banned, it was not allowed to contest the elections, the chairman, vice chairman and president of the party were already in jail, they still say that the party is banned. It will be done," Khan said. Even the <keyword id="137995" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan-Peoples-Party" source="Orion">Pakistan Peoples Party</keyword> (PPP) did not get on board with the government decision while the other ally PML-Q also questioned the decision. Civil society immediately raised objections, with the Human Rights Council of Pakistan expressing concern over the decision and calling it to be in violation of fundamental rights. Author Zahid Hussain, in his column in Dawn, called it a sign of state desperation. "The decision to ban PTI is yet another sign of the state's desperation. It is a desperate move that may bring down the entire edifice. The plan to ban the most popular political party in the country is the most senseless, self-destructive action the government can take. It is nothing short of hara-kiri. Whether or not the decision is implemented, its very announcement has jolted the foundations of the existing political power structure. The ruling coalition is already in tatters." Zahid Hussain wrote in Dawn. A day later, the government back-tracked partially with Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar telling the media that no final decision had been reached. "We need to consult our leadership and allies in this regard. Any decision to ban PTI will be made in accordance with the law and Constitution," Ishaq Dar was quoted as saying by Dawn. Fearing widespread protests, the government may not hold its threat to ban the PTI but holds steadfast on its decision to challenge the Supreme Court's reserved seats ruling. The development comes after the top court ruled that the PTI was eligible for the allocation of reserved seats for women and minorities. Justice Mansoor Ali Shah of the full bench of the Pakistan Supreme Court announced the 8-5 majority verdict, nullifying the Peshawar High Court's (PHC) order wherein it had upheld the Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) decision denying the reserved seats to the SIC. Following the verdict, the PML-N filed a review petition in the Supreme Court against its verdict. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz openly criticised the court saying judges should allow the country to progress "I would like to ask the SC judges to let the country function. Who are those (people) who do not like the country making progress and re-write the Constitution," Maryam said addressing an event in Lahore. In response, the PTI accused the government and the PML-N of acting like the mafia. "In the case of reserved seats, the Supreme Court did full justice and corrected the Election Commission's misinterpretation of the Supreme Court's decision to take away the bat symbol from the Tehreek-e-Insaf, recognizing the political and parliamentary status of the Tehreek-e-Insaf, but the word law. The Supreme Court judges are being threatened on behalf of the Sicilian Mafia, that is illegally in power," the PTI said. While the PPP has come on board and supported the decision to review the court verdict an editorial in Dawn called it a dangerous step. "The PML-N's confrontational stance and overt refusal to respect court orders on arguably flimsy pretexts is a dangerous sign. The party seems to be throwing a tantrum over being denied a two-thirds majority, which it had only secured due to a series of patently unjust and illegal decisions taken by the ECP. It is unjustified for it to escalate tensions on this matter to the point where they may bring two branches of the state into direct conflict with each other," the column read. Sources said that back channel talks are going on to make PCB understand why the hybrid model is the best way to go for the tournament and why there cannot be an ICC tournament without the Indian cricket team. The sources have also said that top ICC officials are trying to get Pakistan stop making any statements against India. There are discussions going on with the host Pakistan and other participating teams of the Champions Trophy next year about the schedule and it is likely to be out in a couple of days or so, the sources added. India, the 2017 finalists, will not be playing their matches in Pakistan and their matches will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), said the source. New Delhi considers that the start of the two concurrent processes to resolve the dispute violates the provision of the three-step graded mechanism prescribed in the IWT. India has been pushing for the resolution of the dispute through the neutral-expert proceedings. With this notification, India has called on Pakistan to begin government-to-government negotiations in order to review the treaty under the provisions of Article XII(3), the sources said. A new study by <keyword id="5069783" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Centre-for-Chronic-Disease-Control" source="Orion">Centre for Chronic Disease Control</keyword>, India (CCDC) on cardiovascular risk reduction in South Asia has demonstrated significant long-term benefits of a multi-faceted quality improvement (QI) strategy, comprising of task sharing, and clinical decision support software (CDSS) with electronic health records, in managing type-2 diabetes in India and Pakistan. The study, published in the prestigious journal PLOS Medicine, highlights the sustained impact of QI interventions on <keyword id="21411276" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="diabetes-care" source="keywords">diabetes care</keyword> and associated complications over a median follow-up period of 6.5 years. The burden of diabetes Diabetes control remains a global challenge, leading to severe complications such as <keyword id="22908" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="heart-disease" source="Orion">heart disease</keyword>, <keyword id="25191" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stroke" source="Orion">stroke</keyword>, <keyword id="16753" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="blindness" source="Orion">blindness</keyword> or visual impairment, and kidney and nerve damage. LMICs are often faced with challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and trained healthcare staff with digital literacy. In that respect, the study's findings are crucial for integrating care models sustainably and identifying relevant organizational barriers. Previous studies from high-income countries showed improvements in diabetes care, but their long-term impact on vascular complications and mortality was unclear. This study aimed to address the critical gap in data regarding the long-term effectiveness of QI strategies and their impacts on vascular complications in LMICs. Professor Nikhil Tandon, Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, and senior author of the study explained the relevance of these findings in the context of national efforts to combat non-communicable diseases (NCDs). He said, "The <keyword id="22511956" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Programme-for-NCDs" source="keywords">National Programme for NCDs</keyword> [NP-NCDs] operationalized by the Government of India has already a functional portal which provides an electronic health record functionality. Integrating the CDSS in this portal will provide significant incremental benefit to the impact of the National Programme, and bolster governmental efforts to battle the scourge of NCDs including diabetes and hypertension." Speaking about the findings, Prof. (Dr) Dorairaj Prabhakaran, Executive Director, CCDC, and one of the study authors, said, "Through the trial, we've demonstrated that a sustained quality improvement strategy can significantly enhance diabetes care and reduce complications in South Asia. For every 13 patients treated with this strategy, one major adverse cardiovascular event like heart attacks or strokes- or a microvascular event -like eye disease or decline in kidney function- was prevented, showcasing its profound impact on patient outcomes." Professor MK Ali, William H. Foege Distinguished Professor of Global Health, Emory University and one of the key authors of this article, said, "This study is an exemplar of trans-national collaboration for benefits of both, the global south and global north." Study Design and Findings The randomized clinical trial included 1,146 patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes across ten outpatient diabetes clinics from January 2011 through September 2019. Participants were randomized to receive either the QI strategy, which involved trained non-physician care coordinators and a clinical decision support software (CDSS) integrated into the electronic health record form, for physicians, or the usual care. Some of the key findings from the study include: <ul><li>At 6.5 years, patients in the QI strategy group were nearly twice as likely to achieve and maintain target levels for HbA1c (&lt;7%), systolic blood pressure (&lt;130mmHg), and LDL-cholesterol (&lt;100mg/dl), compared to the usual care group. </li><li> The incidence of first microvascular complications, such as diabetic eye disease, decline in kidney function, and nerve pain was notably 32% lower in the QI group. </li><li>There was a significant 28% reduction in the combined occurrence of microvascular and macrovascular events in the QI group.</li></ul> Importantly, these benefits were sustained only in clinics that continued the QI strategy for 6.5 years. With diabetes accounting for one in seven deaths in South Asia, the study provides unique insights into the sustainability of QI strategies in achieving diabetes care goals in low- and middle-income (LMICs) and the effects of these improvements on reducing vascular complications and diabetes-related deaths.

As per a TOI report, unexploded bombs scattered across the region continue to pose a significant threat to the local population. In 2023 — 24 years after the tragic war — a total of around 336 such unexploded bombs were reportedly neutralised by the Army. Residents live in constant fear of accidental detonations, especially during construction or excavation work. These incidents have resulted in multiple casualties in the past several years, including the tragic death of a young child. Despite the passage of 25 years, the Army remains actively engaged in defusing these dangerous remnants of war. Low incomes, high prices of every commodity and empty markets, and to top it all, the arrival of holy month of Ramadan is now becoming a major problem for the majority of the population of Pakistan. <keyword id="20851587" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manzoor-ahmed" source="keywords">Manzoor Ahmed</keyword> an auto driver from Karachi highlighted that even before Ramadan, the inflation is very high, stressing the need for the government to start providing relief to the people. "Even before Ramadan the inflation is very high, it is high time that the government starts giving relief to the people. <keyword id="20851588" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="some-budget-bazaars" source="keywords">Some Budget Bazaars</keyword> must be opened so that the public can buy thing a bit cheaper. All the basic needs of a family are costly. Everything like flour, sugar, oil and even petrol and gas is costly, managing everything is becoming difficult," he said. Talking about his income and expenses, <keyword id="20032764" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ahmed" source="keywords">Ahmed</keyword> said that he barely manages his expenses. "I myself am barely able to manage my expenses. Out of the PKR 300 or 400 I make in a day, it becomes very difficult to pay rent and I have to pay high prices for electricity, even when I the supply of electricity is insufficient. Very often we don't get electricity for over 12 hours a day," he added. Another citizen from Karachi noted that corruption is the main cause of all the problems even during the month of Ramadan. "The problem of corruption is the main cause of all the problems even during the month of Ramadan. The ruling class is the one responsible for inflation, their corruption is the root cause of our problems. The most crucial amenities that are required for a common man are very costly. Very basic things like electricity, gas, petrol which is needed in every household is very expensive. Don't even talk about the skyrocketing prices of flour and other food items," he further complained.

Pakistan faces high inflation ahead of Ramadan's festive month

The popular social media platform 'X' owned by <keyword id="19903807" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="elon-musk" source="keywords">Elon Musk</keyword>, has issued a statement saying that it has blocked some accounts and posts on its platform after the executive orders issued by the Indian government. "The <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>n government has issued executive orders requiring X to act on specific accounts and posts, subject to potential penalties including significant fines and imprisonment. In compliance with the orders, we will withhold these accounts and posts in India alone; however, we disagree with these actions and maintain that freedom of expression should extend to these posts," the <keyword id="20682688" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-government-affairs" source="keywords">Global Government Affairs</keyword> of 'X' posted. The Global Government Affairs of 'X also stated that the writ appeal challenging the Indian government's orders remains pending and they have provided impacted users with notices of these actions in accordance with its policies. "Due to legal restrictions, we are unable to publish the executive orders, but we believe that making them public is essential for transparency. This lack of disclosure can lead to a lack of accountability and arbitrary decision-making," it added. Earlier in 2022, X's account with the Pakistan government was withheld in India. This was reportedly the second such incident in recent months. This account was withheld earlier in July 2022 as well but had been reactivated and was visible. Later in October, based on the inputs from intelligence agencies, the Ministry of Information &amp; Broadcasting had directed YouTube to block 45 YouTube videos from 10 YouTube channels. Orders to block the concerned videos were issued on October 23, under the provisions of the Information Technology. The blocked videos had a cumulative viewership of over 1 crore 30 lakh views. The content included fake news and morphed videos spread with the intent to spread hatred among religious communities. Social media platform 'X' decides to withhold accounts after Indian govt executive orders

<keyword id="3001" type="General" weightage="90" keywordseo="pakistan" source="Orion">Pakistan</keyword>'s election commission on Thursday announced that the general elections in the country will take place in the last week of January 2024, amid mounting pressure from political parties that pressed for timely elections in the cash-strapped country. In a statement, the electoral body said that it reviewed work on delimiting constituencies and the initial list for the delimitation of constituencies would be published on September 27. It said parties would be able to file objections after that the ECP would address all objections and suggestions. After hearing objections and suggestions regarding the list, the final list would be issued on November 30, which would be followed by the election schedule, it said. It said that by the end of delimitation, it would announce a 54-day election program and "polls will be held in the last week of January 2024." The National Assembly was dissolved on August 9 and constitutionally, the elections should be held within 90 days but the process was delayed by the ECP due to the delimitation exercise which became mandatory in the wake of the new census held this year. The previous government just days before the end of its term endorsed the results of the census which obligated the ECP to set up a new electoral district on the basis of the latest population. The move led to fears that the polls meant to be held within 90 days may be delayed till next year as the delimitation process would take about four months to complete. The decision to shorten the timeframe of the delimitation comes amid mounting pressure on the ECP from several political parties that pressed for timely elections. The Constitution also provides that the ECP should complete the delimitation process within 120 days. Currently, a caretaker government is running the country and it will continue until the new prime minister is elected through the elections. Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has said the interim government is committed to upholding the democratic process in Pakistan by holding general elections and it will not make any excuse to delay it. In a letter to the ECP chief earlier this month, President Arif Alvi, who was a founding member of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, unilaterally proposed November 6 as the day for the polls, but the top election body avoided comment on his suggestion.

The government's decision came in light of the Lahore High Court's order to immediately impose a "smog emergency" in the city due to the constantly hazardous air quality index. The government said the environment department would seal industrial units with reopening only possible through a court order. The government said district administration will take strict actions to prevent stubble burning and black smoke from any chimney of brick kilns as well as factories and all brick kilns must transfer to zigzag technology. "Every smoke-emitting vehicle will be impounded and will be released only after attaining a proper fitness certificate," it said, adding that special anti-smog squads consisting of district and highway police will patrol day and night to stop stubble burning. On Wednesday, Lahore High Court Justice Shahid Karim chided the Lahore commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa for his failure to control the pollution. "Smog is not my personal problem but it is a matter of concern for the lives of our children. You are the custodian of Lahore city. See what you have done to it... you should be ashamed of Lahore's condition," the judge observed. Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi had earlier briefed caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar about the main reason for the spread of smog in Lahore as the burning of residues of crops in India's Punjab state. Kakar assured the Punjab government of taking up the issue of the smog with India at the diplomatic level.

Islamabad, The Pakistan government on Thursday said it has set up "holding centres" across the country and finalised a plan to deport illegal immigrants, including an estimated 1.7 million Afghans, by the October 31 deadline. Earlier this month, Pakistan gave an ultimatum to "all undocumented immigrants, including 1.7 million <keyword id="103498" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="afghan-nationals" source="Orion">Afghan nationals</keyword>," to leave Pakistan by the deadline, or else, risk imprisonment and deportation. Although the Pakistan government has maintained that the announcement of deportation was not restricted to Afghans and was applicable to all illegal immigrants, caretaker Interior Minister <keyword id="3044200" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sarfraz-bugti" source="Orion">Sarfraz Bugti</keyword> did blame them on Thursday. "Illegal Afghan nationals were responsible for 14 of the 24 suicide bombings in the country this year. Safety and security of the people of Pakistan is the prime responsibility and foremost priority of the government," The News International quoted Bugti as saying at a press conference. "Urging illegal immigrants living in Pakistan to return to their countries voluntarily, Bugti said that the government had finalised the plan for repatriating such individuals," a Dawn News report said. Stating that "no compromise will be made" as the deadline nears, Bugti said: "Centres have been set up in various cities across the country to keep the illegal immigrants, while those leaving voluntarily will be helped to leave Pakistan." "It is a challenging task (but) Pakistan is determined to expel all illegal immigrants," Bugti was quoted by The International News as saying. The decision (to expel all illegal immigrants) was taken in an apex committee meeting headed by caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar and attended by Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir, among others. The committee also decided that movement across the border would be subject to passports and visas, while electronic Afghan identity cards (or e-tazkiras) would only be accepted until October 31. The Dawn also quoted Bugti as saying that "holding centres" had been formed in the provinces as well as Islamabad, Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan and that "illegal immigrants would be provided medical facilities and food." Bugti also assured that women, children and the elderly would be treated with respect. "So in the first stage, we will expel them. We have made holding centres for them. They will not be sent to jail [...] and from the centre, they will be transported out of Pakistan," the Dawn said quoting the Interim Interior Minister. He also announced the terms and conditions for the return of all such immigrants and said the state had "done geo-fencing and identified areas where illegal immigrants were residing." Bugti said that a drastic crackdown would be launched against the illegal immigrants, including Afghan nationals, who would be arrested and expelled to their native countries. "At least 4.2 million Afghan people were living in Pakistan, of which not less than three million were living illegally without any legal documents," he said. Pakistan has been hosting Afghan refugees for the past four decades when millions of them fled Afghanistan during the 1979-1989 Soviet occupation. After the October 5 announcement giving the October 31 deadline, especially to the Afghans, received widespread criticism, the Foreign Office clarified that the decision to deport illegal residents was not specifically targeted at the Afghan refugees but "against all immigrants residing in the country illegally without valid visa documents." Quoting Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, The International News said the national policy towards the Afghan refugees in the country "remained unchanged" and their safe repatriation was a separate issue. The outlawed Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP, often claim attacks on Pakistani security forces. Pakistan has long demanded that the Taliban authorities in Afghanistan cease their support for the TTP.
