An <keyword id="19992067" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Air-Force" source="keywords">Indian Air Force</keyword> soldier who was injured in a <keyword id="19899445" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="terrorist-attack" source="keywords">terrorist attack</keyword> in the <keyword id="19905509" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Poonch" source="keywords">Poonch</keyword> sector in <keyword id="19900657" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-and-Kashmir" source="keywords">Jammu and Kashmir</keyword> on Saturday has unfortunately passed away, confirmed the Indian Air Force. "An Indian Air Force vehicle convoy was attacked by militants in the Poonch district of J&amp;K, near Shahsitar. Cordon and search operations are underway presently in the area by local military units. The convoy has been secured, and further investigation is under progress," tweeted the <keyword id="19900590" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iaf" source="keywords">IAF</keyword> Media Co-ordination Centre on X. The injured personnel were evacuated to Udhampur for treatment on IAF choppers, where one of them succumbed. Another soldier is reported to be in critical condition, as confirmed by security force officials. "In the ensuing gunfight with terrorists, the Air Warriors fought back by returning fire. In the process, five IAF personnel received bullet injuries, and were evacuated to the nearest military hospital for immediate medical attention. One Air Warrior succumbed to his injuries later. Further operations are on by the local security forces," said the IAF. The soldier who succumbed was undergoing treatment at the command hospital at Udhampur. The remaining three are stable as per the Security Force officials, reported ANI. Following the attack that occurred in the evening around Shah Sitar and Shashidhar areas in the Poonch sector. Security forces initiated a search and cordon operation, as stated by security forces' officials. In response to the attack, forces have increased patrolling and vehicle checks in the area. The convoy was en route to the Sanai Top in the Surankote area of the district. The terrorists are suspected to be belonging to the same group that ambushed Indian troops in the Bufliaz area nearby on December 21, as per the Times of India report. The December attack last year had killed four soldiers and injured three. Earlier, in November 2023, a prolonged gunfight between Indian Army and the terrorists responsible for frequent attack on civilians in the region has resulted in deaths of five army personnel, including two captains. The Poonch sector belongs to the Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary constituency which will vote for the Lok Sabha elections on May 25. Congress leaders Malikarjun Kharge and <keyword id="19895780" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rahul-gandhi" source="keywords">Rahul Gandhi</keyword> extended condolences over the death of IAF personnel. Condemning the attack by terrorists, Rahul Gandhi in a post on X, wrote, "The cowardly terrorist attack on our Army convoy in Poonch of Jammu and Kashmir is extremely shameful and sad," Rahul Gandhi said. Former Jammu and Kashmir DGP <keyword id="21530697" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shesh-paul-vaid" source="keywords">Shesh Paul Vaid</keyword> slammed Pakistan after the attack, hinting that the neighbouring country will not tolerate seeing people of Jammu and Kashmir exercising their democratic right. "It is not surprising, because the election tempo was building up in this area," said Shesh Paul Vaid in a video message posted on his official social media platform, X. Retired Major General GD Bakshi told ANI, "From the last two-three years, we have seen that the Inter-Services Intelligence and Army of Pakistan is again reviving terrorism in the Rajouri-Poonch area. Their supreme sacrifice will never be forgotten by a country on its path to glory on a global stage. <h2>A continued tragedy</h2>The Kargil War left behind a deadly legacy along with long-term trauma among the local residents and the defence personnel who fought valiantly. As per a TOI report, unexploded bombs scattered across the region continue to pose a significant threat to the local population. In 2023 — 24 years after the tragic war — a total of around 336 such unexploded bombs were reportedly neutralised by the Army. Residents live in constant fear of accidental detonations, especially during construction or excavation work. These incidents have resulted in multiple casualties in the past several years, including the tragic death of a young child. Despite the passage of 25 years, the Army remains actively engaged in defusing these dangerous remnants of war. Kargil Vijay Diwas: A tale of valour and sacrifice

Islamabad: Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has said that <keyword id="19991528" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="trade-ties" source="keywords">trade ties</keyword> between Islamabad and New Delhi have remained suspended since 2019 due to the imposition of "heavy duties" by <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> on imports from Pakistan after the <keyword id="20579845" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pulwama-attack" source="keywords">Pulwama attack</keyword>. According to the Dawn newspaper, Dar was responding to a question by Pakistan Peoples Party lawmaker Sharmila Faruqui seeking details about trade challenges faced by Pakistan in its relations with neighbouring countries, especially India. In March, during a press conference in London, Dar highlighted the eagerness of Pakistan's business community to resume trade activities with India. However, his office later clarified that Pakistan has no plan to resume trade relations with India which has been "non-existent" since 2019. Pakistan downgraded its ties with India after the <keyword id="20467268" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-parliament" source="keywords">Indian Parliament</keyword> suspended Article 370 on August 5, 2019, a decision that Islamabad believed undermined the environment for holding talks between the neighbours. "We have consistently advocated constructive engagement and result-oriented dialogue to resolve all outstanding issues, including the core issue of Jammu and Kashmir with India...," Dar said on Saturday. The foreign minister said that the "onus is now on Delhi to take steps for the creation of an environment that is conducive to peace and dialogue". India has been maintaining that it desires normal neighbourly relations with Pakistan while insisting that the onus is on Islamabad to create an environment that is free of terror and hostility for such an engagement. Islamabad and New Delhi have a long history of strained relations, primarily due to the Kashmir issue as well as the cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan.

On September 5, an army personnel was killed and two others, including an officer, were injured as Pakistani troops violated ceasefire in Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district, officials said. While on September 2, a JCO was killed in ceasefire violation by Pakistan army along LoC in Keri sector of Rajouri. Pakistan shells areas along LoC in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch

Four civilians were on Saturday injured when Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rampur sector of Jammu and Kashmir, according to an Army spokesperson. "On 20 June, 2020, in the morning hours, Pakistan initiated an unprovoked ceasefire violation along the LoC in Rampur sector by firing mortars and other weapons," the spokesperson said. He said four civilians were injured in the Pakistani firing. In another ceasefire violation, Pakistani troops fired mortars and other weapons on Indian posts in Uri sector on Saturday afternoon, the spokesperson said. He said there are no reports of any casualty in the incident. The Army has given a befitting response to the Pakistani aggression in both the sectors, he said. Pakistan ceasefire violation in Jammu and Kashmir leaves four civilians injured

There has been a spurt in ceasefire violations along the LoC in the Kupwara district of Kashmir valley and to the south of Pir Panchal in Rajouri and Poonch districts in Jammu with Pakistan targeting civilian areas and defence positions with long range mortars and small arms. What is making the matter worse is <keyword id="2479020" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fake-news">fake news</keyword> is spreading at a rapid pace along the India Pakistan border. The state's governor Satya Pal Malik requested citizens to not believe any news that comes their way, adding that fake news in Kashmir snowballs quickly. “Lot of rumours spread here. Don’t pay heed to this. Everything is normal. Everything is fine,” Malik <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/jk-governor-rejects-speculation-on-article-35-a-says-its-fake-news/articleshow/70458937.cms">had said on Tuesday </a>on the sidelines of an event. The state rumours The worst of such rumours is one claiming that the state will scrap Article 35A, which gives the state of <keyword id="23412" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-Kashmir">Jammu &amp; Kashmir</keyword> special status. Another rumour says that the state will deploy troops to control law &amp; order once the order is passed. Yet another fake news says that Article 35A has been scrapped, that Jammu is a separate state. And also that Kashmir and Ladakh have turned as union territories. The governor has <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/jk-governor-rejects-speculation-on-article-35-a-says-its-fake-news/articleshow/70458937.cms">denied these rumours</a> saying that there are no plans to scrap Article 35A. He added that there was no such order came from the government. Meanwhile, ANI reported that the Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, Baseer Ahmed Khan has said, “No schools in the district have been closed. I appeal to people to not believe any rumours. People should contact their concerned deputy commissioners for reliable information.” Fake orders too? After the clarification from the governor, former Chief Minister of J&amp;K Omar Abdullah took to Twitter to express his concern on the necessity to crackdown on fake orders that are circulating in the state. “This is a very serious matter raised by the Governor. Fake orders were circulated under the signature of senior government officers. This is not something that can be dismissed with a simple sound byte. The CBI must be asked to investigate these fake orders and their origin,” Abdullah said.

<ul><li><keyword id="52395" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Baramulla">Baramulla</keyword> constituency close to the Line of Control is a sensitive and volatile area.</li><li>Voter turnout in the first phase of polling on April 11 was 35%, according to reports.</li><li>The state of <keyword id="23412" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-Kashmir">Jammu &amp; Kashmir</keyword> recorded a voter turnout of 54.49% until 5 pm. </li><li>Incidents of stone-pelting and glitches in the electronic voting machines may have also affected the voter turnout.</li></ul>Over 35% of voters turned up to<a href="https://www.outlookindia.com/newsscroll/amid-allegations-of-emv-malfunction-jk-records-over-55-voter-turnout/1514218"> vote</a> on April 11 in Baramulla, a district that stretches to the edge of the tense Line of Control that divides India and Pakistan, in the state of Kashmir. The Baramulla district has been a hotbed of Kashmiri militancy and a haven for separatists up in arms against the Indian state for years. However, earlier this year, the Kashmir Police declared that <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/explained/explained-what-a-militant-free-baramulla-kashmir-means-5554270/">the district had become ‘militant free’</a>. Glitches in the electronic voting machines and stone-pelting protestors may have also affected the voter turnout. That over a third of the registered voters in the constituency still turned up to vote can be read as a mixed signal, at best. In the state of Jammu and Kashmir, two constituencies Jammu and Baramulla went to polls today. The voter turnout in the state as a whole was recorded to be at 54.49% until 5 pm, according to the Election Commission. The state of Jammu &amp; Kashmir in totality had recorded a voter turnout of 49.52% in the 2014 General Elections, meanwhile Baramulla alone had recorded 39.14% and Jammu had recorded 67.99%. The voter count in the strife-torn areas of Kashmir is a significant signal to assess the appeal of the Indian democracy in the region that sees violent outbursts by separatists, frequently. Expectations were high this time, as the voter turnout in the Panchayat (local administration) elections in Kashmir held in December 2018 saw an average voter turnout of 74%. This time too, Kashmiri separatists had called for <a href="https://www.thestatesman.com/elections-2019/separatists-call-boycott-lok-sabha-elections-beginning-thursday-1502744485.html">boycott of polls</a>, and some incidents of stone pelting were <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/news-ians/nearly-25-polling-in-j-k-till-11-a-m-stoning-in-baramulla-119041100443_1.html">reported </a>during the day. In the Parliamentary elections of 1999 and 2004, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference candidate Abdul Rasheed Shaheen was elected from this constituency, followed by Sharief Ud Din Shariq of the same party in 2009. However, the tables turned in 2014 when Muzaffar Hussain Baig from the rival People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won the election in 2014. This time the candidates are M M War, from BJP, Haji Farooq Mir from INC, Abdul Kauam Vani from PDP Mohammad Akbar lone from JKNC. Post the suicide attack in Pulwama in February which had killed over 40 Indian security personnel, the state had been under high alert and political tensions had flared up. A Kashmiri constituency on the edge of India-Pakistan border sees a 35% voter turnout

<ul><li>Two days after Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh were brought directly under the central government's control, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose to make a special address to the nation.</li><li>Modi also said that the Union Territory status of Jammu and Kashmir is a temporary measure and the state will get its own assembly as soon as possible.</li><li>While the contentious decision has been contested by his rivals, both houses of the Indian Parliament have approved the Presidential order that redefined Jammu and Kashmir's political status.</li><li>Article 370 and Article 35A had given nothing but terrorism, separatism, dynasty politics, and corruption," he said.</li></ul>Two days the state of Jammu and Kashmir, including the Ladakh region, were split into two Union Territories, Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed that this is a temporary measure only. While Ladakh will remain under the direct control of the central government, Jammu and Kashmir will get to hold its elections once again and elect a local leader. To those who oppose the move to abrogate Article 370 and Article 35A in Jammu and Kashmir -- provisions that allowed the state to make its own laws -- Modi said that he respects their right to disagree but urged them to keep aside the differences in 'national interest'. This speech has come two days after the central government wrested direct control over the volatile Jammu and Kashmir state by disbanding the province into two Union Territories namely Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, first through a Presidential order and later got it ratified by the Parliament.  He assured the people of Jammu and Kashmir that the situation in the region will come back to normal as soon as possible and promised that there will be no obstacle in the upcoming Eid celebrations next week. In his address, PM Modi said that "Article 370 and Article 35A had given nothing but terrorism, separatism, dynasty politics, and corruption." He also added that Pakistan had been using this as a weapon to push its agenda in Kashmir and that over 42,000 people lost their lives in the process. Modi also said that the women of Kashmir were denied equal rights, poor workers did not not get the benefit of India's minimum wage laws, and socially marginalised Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes were deprived of the benefits of the central government's affirmative action. He also promised state benefits, for government employees including the Police in Jammu and Kashmir as well as in Ladakh, like leave travel allowance, house rent allowance, and allowance for children's education among others. "We have removed the obstacles to the development of Jammu and Kashmir," said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his special address to the nation, which will also be aired on the state-owned All India Radio.
