Pakistan has questioned the veracity of India's dossiers on <keyword id="26778" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="underworld">underworld</keyword> don <keyword id="6357714" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dawood-Ibrahim">Dawood Ibrahim</keyword> calling them "self-serving" and said government's comments in Parliament on his whereabouts vindicated its sustained stand that the fugitive was not in its territory. 
 <keyword id="106423" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pakistan-High-Commissioner">Pakistan High Commissioner</keyword> <keyword id="135964" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Abdul-Basit">Abdul Basit</keyword> said the comments by Minister of State for Home Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary in Parliament on Tuesday justified his country's worries on the issue and asserted that India has not placed any request with <keyword id="3002" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Islamabad">Islamabad</keyword> in writing for Dawood's extradition. 
 "Honestly speaking that was quite disquieting and disconcerting from our perspective and frankly that calls for some introspection. If you prepare dossiers on the basis of self-serving information, than we have every reason to be worried. Our worries are justified," he told <keyword id="157927" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Karan-Thapar">Karan Thapar</keyword> on Headlines Today. 
 <keyword id="2840570" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Contradicting-government">Contradicting government</keyword>'s earlier stand on Dawood's whereabouts, Chaudhary had said in Parliament that the government was not aware of the location of the fugitive whose deportation from Pakistan it has been demanding. 
 
Asked whether the Minister's position vindicated Pakistan's stand, he said "It does. He is not in Pakistan." 
 
On whether India either in the recent past or earlier had formally in writing requested extradition of the don, he said, "Not to my knowledge". 
 
 
When pressed further, he said, "Not to my knowledge because from our perspective as we have been saying our position is that he is not in Pakistan. So the question of extradition does not arise in the first instance." 
 
India had handed over to Pakistan several dossiers on Dawood, India's most wanted fugitive, giving details about his locations in Pakistan. 
 
 
The envoy also called Jammu and Kashmir as "mother of all issues" bilaterally and said both the countries should work with sincerity to resolve it. 
 
"First of all, it is important whether it is UN resolutions or Shimla agreement or 1999 Lahore Declaration , you need to understand from our perspective, and I think India also recognises that, Jammu and Kashmir is mother of all our issues bilaterally," he said. 
 
 The <keyword id="44309" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="High-Commissioner">High Commissioner</keyword> said other issues like Siachen, Sir Creek or water issues, terrorism, have their "roots in the Jammu and Kashmir dispute" while asserting that Islamabad wanted to normalise ties with India.

<keyword id="3001" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword> may allow <keyword id="1169098" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="cotton-import">cotton import</keyword> from India through land route as prospects of gradual restoration of <keyword id="2144168" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="bilateral-trade-ties">bilateral trade ties</keyword> have brightened after the <keyword id="10843030" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-ceasefire-agreement">new ceasefire agreement</keyword> along the <keyword id="44759" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Line-of-Control">Line of Control</keyword>, according to a media report on Sunday. Citing sources in the <keyword id="137756" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Commerce">Ministry of Commerce</keyword>, The Express Tribune reported that Adviser to the <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood may take a decision on whether to import cotton and yarn from India next week. They said that the issue of cotton shortfall has already been brought to the notice of Prime Minister <keyword id="14676" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Imran-Khan">Imran Khan</keyword>, who also holds the portfolio of the commerce minister. Once a principled decision is taken, a formal order will be presented before the Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet, the sources told the daily. The sources said that in-house deliberations have already begun but the final decision would be taken only after seeking the approval of the prime minister. I cannot say yes or no at this stage and would be in a better position to respond on Monday, Dawood told the daily, responding to a question on whether Pakistan was considering allowing cotton import from India. The trade ties between both the countries can help minimise cost of production in Pakistan and ensure sustained food supplies, the daily said. India and Pakistan issued a joint statement on Thursday to strictly observe all agreements on ceasefire along the LoC and other sectors after the hotline discussions by their Director Generals of Military Operations. The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 2003, but it has hardly been followed in letter and spirit over the past several years. Relations between the two neighbours have nose-dived after a series of terror attacks in India perpetrated by terror groups based in Pakistan. Bilateral ties deteriorated further after India revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. The move angered Pakistan, which downgraded diplomatic ties and expelled the Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad. Pakistan also snapped all air and land links with India and suspended trade and railway services. The paper reported that against the annual estimated consumption of minimum 12 million bales, the Ministry of National Food Security and Research expects only 7.7 million bales production this year. However, cotton ginners have given the lowest production estimates of only 5.5 million bales for this year. There is a minimum shortfall of six million bales and Pakistan has so far imported roughly 688,305 metric tonnes of cotton and yarn, costing USD 1.1 billion, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. There is still a gap of about 3.5 million bales that needs to be filled through imports. Due to shortage of cotton and yarn, the users were compelled to import them from the United States, Brazil and Uzbekistan. Imports from India would be far cheaper and would reach Pakistan within three to four days. Importing yarn from other countries was not only expensive but would also take one to two months to reach Pakistan, the daily reported, quoting businessmen who deal in these commodities. The delay in yarn import can pose risk to timely deliver the export orders, according to the paper. However, the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) is exerting pressure on the Pakistan government not to allow cotton and yarn import from India. An industry insider told the daily that few millers have already hoarded the cotton and were now charging higher rates and import would dampen their short-term earnings. In an appeal to Dawood, Aptma said that the import of yarn from India will directly impact cotton prices in Pakistan. The cotton sowing season is currently starting in Pakistan and the predicted drop in cotton price owing to import of yarn from India is approximately 10-15 per cent, discouraging farmers not to sow cotton, according to the Aptma. On Thursday, India said it desires normal neighbourly relations with Pakistan and is committed to resolving all issues bilaterally in a peaceful manner. Prime Minister Khan on Saturday welcomed the ceasefire agreement with India and said Islamabad remains ready to move forward to resolve "all outstanding issues" through dialogue. Pakistan likely to import cotton from India after announcing LoC ceasefire

Pakistan will buy <keyword id="31653" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sugar">sugar</keyword> and cotton from India, newly appointed Finance Minister Hammad <keyword id="8402" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Azhar">Azhar</keyword> announced on Wednesday, lifting a ban on their import from the neighbouring country imposed in the wake of heightened tension over Kashmir in 2019. The decision was taken at the meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), which was chaired by Finance Minister Azhar. Azhar said that the meeting discussed 21 items on the agenda, including import of cotton and sugar from India, which it allowed after detailed discussion. The resumption of import of these goods will lead to partial revival of bilateral trade relations, which were suspended after the August 5, 2019 decision of India to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. The private sector was allowed to import 5 lakh tonnes of white sugar from India, he said. He also said that the government had allowed sugar to be imported from other countries, however, the price of the commodity in other countries was also high. "However, in our neighbouring country India, the price of sugar is quite cheap," he said. "Hence, we have decided to resume sugar trade with India". Azhar also said that Pakistan will import cotton from India starting June this year. Adviser to the <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> of Pakistan for Commerce and Investment, Dawood welcomed the decisions taken by the ECC. "All steps be taken through cross-border imports of cotton yarn including by land. A summary will be presented at the next ECC to ensure availability of cotton and yarn in the coming months," Dawood tweeted. Finance Minister Azhar told the media that demand for cotton in Pakistan was increasing but it had not produced quality cotton last year hence it had given the green signal for the product to be imported from other countries. "The import of cotton from India was banned and this had a direct effect on our SMEs," he said. "However, at the recommendation of the <keyword id="137756" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Commerce">Ministry of Commerce</keyword>, we have also decided to resume the trade of cotton with India," he added. Azhar was appointed as Finance Minister on Monday by Prime Minister <keyword id="14676" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Imran-Khan">Imran Khan</keyword> who removed Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh from the finance portfolio after his embarrassing defeat in the <keyword id="6355284" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="senate">Senate</keyword> elections. Azhar is the third finance minister to be appointed since Khan came to power in 2018. Earlier, in May 2020, Pakistan lifted the ban on import of medicines and raw material of essential drugs from India amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The Ministry of Textile had sought permission from the ECC to lift the ban on import of cotton and cotton yarn from India in a bid to bridge the raw material shortfall for the value-added textile sector. The Ministry of Commerce separately asked for permission to allow import of white sugar from India through the <keyword id="11024310" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="trading-corporation-of">Trading Corporation of</keyword> Pakistan and commercial importers. Official sources here said that Prime Minister Khan as Minister-in-Charge of Commerce and Textile had already approved the reports placed before the ECC for allowing import of cotton and sugar from India. "It shows that there is no technical or legal hindrance for importing these items from India," a source said. Tension has come down between the two nations after the restoration of ceasefire on the <keyword id="44759" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Line-of-Control">Line of Control</keyword> last month. It was followed with an exchange of letters by the prime ministers of the two countries. It is said that the two sides are working behind the scenes to restore their full diplomatic ties which were downgraded after August, 2019 action in Kashmir. India's move to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir in August, 2019 angered Pakistan, which downgraded diplomatic ties with India and expelled the Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad. Pakistan also snapped all air and land links with India and suspended trade and railway services. Pakistan to import sugar and cotton from India, says Finance Minister Hammad Azhar

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=syed+akbaruddin">Syed Akbaruddin</a>, who became a familiar face as spokesperson of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ministry+of+external+affairs">Ministry of External Affairs</a>, is now going to take over as India’s <keyword id="164569" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="permanent-representative">permanent representative</keyword> at the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=United+Nations">United Nations</a> in New York. 
 In a major rejig at the MEA, Akbaruddin will be handling the position, replacing <keyword id="376834" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asoke-Mukerji">Asoke Mukerji</keyword> who will be retiring. 
 
Also, Gautam Bambawale, India's ambassador to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Bhutan">Bhutan</a>, will take over from TCA Raghavan as high commissioner to Pakistan when the latter retires in December. 
 
Bambawale is an expert on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Modi-says-this-is-the-year-of-India-and-China/articleshow/47292783.cms">China</a> and will be taking over one of India's most sensitive diplomatic positions. 
 
While, present secretary (west) in MEA, Navtej Sarna, will be India's next high commissioner to London, Anil Wadhwa, secretary (east), will go to Rome. 
 
The two senior-most officials in headquarters will be replaced by Amar Sinha, who has been India’s ambassador to Afghanistan, and Amarendra Khatua, who is currently ambassador to Argentina. They will be the next Secretaries East and West. 
 
Meanwhile, in Moscow, P S Raghavan will be replaced by Pankaj Saran. Saran, who is currently India's high commissioner to Dhaka, has believed to have played a key role in securing the land boundary agreement between India and Bangladesh. 
 
Vijay Gokhale, India's ambassador to Germany, will go to Beijing. 
 
Sujan Chinoy, India's ambassador to Mexico, will take over from Deepa Wadhwa in Tokyo.

The Indian government is blaming Pakistan-- Islamabad has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/jaish-e-mohammad-from-pakistan-kills-45-indian-soldiers-but-government-denies-link/articleshow/68003080.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">denied</a> any links-- for enabling the terrorists behind the deadly attacks in Kashmir. India has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-revokes-most-favoured-nation-status-to-pakistan-after-pulwama-attack/articleshow/68004958.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">revoked</a> the most favoured nation status-- which offers beneficial trade terms-- given to Pakistan in the wake of the attacks in Pulwama. However, aside from the reactionary outbursts soon after such attacks in the recent past, India’s policy, towards its troublesome neighbour on the West, has appeared incoherent and inconsistent. A similar attack in Uri, Kashmir in 2016 led to the ‘<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/30/world/asia/kashmir-india-pakistan.html">surgical strikes</a>’ by the Indian army across the Line of Control, in Pakistan-occupied- Kashmir, in September 2016. The move helped establish Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a strongman who would wait and watch as Pakistan used ‘terrorists’ as a state tool of aggression against India. This was<a href="https://www.outlookindia.com/website/story/2016-surgical-strike-was-not-indias-first-here-are-the-previous-ones/313158"> not the first</a> such attack by the Indian army, but it was definitely the most publicised one. The propaganda was so effective that the wave of appreciation for Modi’s courage swept over the<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-41896865"> ill-conceived demonetisation</a> initiative that brought the country’s economy to a grinding halt. It even won the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) key state elections, which followed soon after. The surgical strikes even inspired a movie, Uri, two years later, in January 2018. The slick blockbuster sparked widespread jingoism in India and the BJP milked it well for political gains. The many flip-flops The man who, before becoming prime minister, asserted that the Indian government should respond in the same ‘language’ – that of violence – as the one that Pakistan uses, turned very cordial soon after he was elected. Modi got accolades for his statesmanship when he<a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/news/Sharif-other-Saarc-heads-invited-for-Modi-swearing-in/articleshow/35452933.cms"> invited</a> Pakistan’s head of state Nawaz Sharif for the swearing in ceremony in May 2014. Three months later, Modi<a href="https://www.dawn.com/news/1126123"> cancelled</a> the scheduled foreign-secretary level talks citing a meeting between the Pakistani high commissioner to India and the Kashmiri separatist Hurriyat group. The next flip flop happened in December 2014, when Modi<a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/pm-modi-lands-in-lahore-on-a-surprise-visit-meets-pak-pm-nawaz-sharif/"> flew impromptu</a> to Lahore to dine at Sharif’s home when the latter’s daughter was getting wedded, and hope floated that the rapport between the two leaders may calm the tensions between the two nations fighting over shared borders for nearly seven decades now. However, within ten days of the famed meeting of the two leaders, terrorists from the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad attacked a military base in Pathankot, Punjab killing 7 Indian soldiers and one civilian. The conversations between the two governments stopped and Modi’s poise turned icy. What followed was a rise in cross-border firings as well as a marked-up call to global allies to ‘<a href="https://www.ft.com/content/bb7592de-82e3-11e6-8897-2359a58ac7a5">isolate</a>’ Pakistan in international forums. That was 2016 and 2017. In November 2018, the two countries agreed to build a cross-border<a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/india-pak-to-build-corridor-for-sikh-pilgrims-to-visit-iconic-gurdwara/story-HV7Zgu8jh1VSDMNNqwbmCL.html"> corridor</a> that would allow Sikhs to visit a holy shrine, which is devoted to the religion’s founder Guru Nanak, situated in Pakistan. Less than a month before the hand shakes on the Kartapur corridor, representatives from the two countries had a heated exchange at the<a href="https://thediplomat.com/2018/09/an-india-pakistan-showdown-at-the-united-nations-73rd-general-assembly/"> United Nations</a> General Assembly. Cut to the new year, and Modi was a lot more considerate in his answer to the question on his stance towards Pakistan. “It will be a huge mistake to believe that Pakistan will mend its ways after a war. It will take a lot of time for Pakistan to mend its ways,” the Indian prime minister said in an<a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/pakistan-would-take-a-lot-of-time-to-mend-its-ways-narendra-modi/article25881945.ece"> interview</a> on January 1. Weeks after the stately view on Pakistan, Modi today, after the latest attack, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/pulwama-terror-attack-live-updates-several-crpf-personnel-martyred-in-jammu-and-kashmirs-pulwama-district/liveblog/67994460.cms">said</a> that the Indian security forces have been ‘given full freedom’. India is a lot more polarised today on many issues, none more common than nationalism. The idea of patriotism and the plight of Indian soldiers facing the enemy at the western border have been contentious issues among the country’s citizens—both on social media and in personal interactions—and the credit goes to the BJP for making the debate ubiquitous. However, in hindsight, the sting of the Indian rhetoric against Pakistan has been more consistent on Twitter than at the level of the government. Neither India’s aggression nor its pacifist attitude has had any impact on Pakistan’s approach. Ceasefire violations have increased six fold between 2015 and 2018, according to a government<a href="https://scroll.in/article/888719/data-check-already-more-ceasefire-violations-along-line-of-control-this-year-than-all-of-2017"> data</a> released in July 2018. Indian government is raging at Pakistan again—here's a look at its policy so far

The judgement from the court <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/india-pakistan-clash-over-35-million-pounds-deposited-by-hyderabad-nizam-in-1948-in-uk-court-2203743.html">is expected</a> in six weeks. Soon after the independence and formation of Pakistan, the Nizam of Hyderabad, late Nizam Osman Ali Khan, who then wanted to accede Hyderabad to Pakistan, had transferred his fortune to the high commissioner of Pakistan in Britain and that was then deposited with the NatWest Bank in London. The fortune was 1,007,940 pounds and nine shillings in 1948, which has since then grown into £35 million. India and Pakistan have since then been fighting for the rights of the fortune. The Nizam’s descendents have joined hands with the government of India in the legal pursuit for the fortune, further strengthening the case in India’s favour while Pakistan has been claiming the riches to be rightfully theirs. "His Exalted Highness Nizam VIII and his younger brother have waited decades to receive what their grandfather gifted them. Pakistan has blocked access for 70 years and we hope the recent trial will mean a final resolution at last," said Paul Hewitt, partner at Withers law firm, which is representing the eighth Nizam of Hyderabad, in the Royal Courts of Justice in London. The major question the court has to deal with is who exactly is the beneficial owner of the funds. It is to be noted that the Nizam himself had <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/india-pakistan-clash-over-35-million-pounds-deposited-by-hyderabad-nizam-in-1948-in-uk-court-2203743.html">reportedly</a> asked the NatWest Bank to return the funds, which were held back by the bank. The fortune was deposited into the London bank account of the then Pakistan High Commissioner Habib Ibrahim Rahimtoola.

In yet another embarrassment to Islamabad, the Chinese firm, which apparently manufactured the drone shot down by Pakistan along the LoC, said the aircraft was not sold to any government. 
 
The Pakistani army had downed an unmanned aircraft along the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=line+of+control">LoC</a> on July 15, saying it was a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=spy+drone">spy drone</a> from India. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=jaishankar">Indian Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar</a> had who refuted <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Pakistan">Pakistan</a>'s claims of shooting down an Indian drone, adding that it was not in the inventory of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=indian+army">Indian defence forces</a>. 
 
On Wednesday, a news report in The Global Times read that Chinese drone maker, DJI, said that governments are not their direct customers, reinforcing India's stand. 
 
Earlier, Chinese official media, People's Daily Online, reported that the phantom 3 drone was made in China by DJI. 
 
Pakistan had summoned Indian High Commissioner to Islamabad TCA Raghavan to protest over it. 
 
The Global Times report also quoted DJI as saying that it is not difficult to purchase their drones through its website or through any vendors.

After the new government took over the reins in New <keyword id="66" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Delhi">Delhi</keyword>, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited the leaders of SAARC countries including <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword> to his swearing-in ceremony. This act was more of a symbolic gesture to send a message to the world at large that the new government in Delhi is looking to prioritise its relationship with its immediate neighbours that have been anything but rosy in the recent past. Political pundits had their own take on this with many dubbing it as some sort of ‘diplomatic-coup’ from the new PM’s side. 
 
Be that as it may, one thing is indisputably true: India can not become a major player on the world stage unless and until it plays a more significant role in its own backyard (read: South Asia) commensurate with its power, both economically and militarily. This part of the world is one of the least developed areas on the planet where all types of elements inimical to a standard quality of life are prevalent: chronic poverty, large-scale unemployment, high illiteracy levels, religious bigotry, scourge of extremism et al. It is against this backdrop that India has to tread the path to economic and social prosperity. But in doing so, it would have to play a much bigger role in the region than it currently does. For all of this to happen, India must be seen as a willing partner by its neighbors that commands trust and co-operation of its smaller counterparts. And, that can come only through dialogue and engagements at different levels. 
 To the credit of the new government, since it has come to the office, it has undertaken substantive steps in strengthening its relationships with its immediate neighbors starting with the premier Narendra Modi’s visits to Bhutan and Nepal and other high-level talks with other countries at different levels. Probably, the most awaited diplomatic manoeuvre that was to come—a foreign-secretary level dialogue between India and Pakistan in Islamabad scheduled for August 25 this year. This arrangement was agreed upon by <keyword id="2257489" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PM-Narendra-Modi">PM Narendra Modi</keyword> and his Pakistani counterpart <keyword id="6576" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nawaz-Sharif">Nawaz Sharif</keyword> in May in a bid to break the stalemate in the bilateral dialogue process. 
 
As luck would have it, the proposed dialogue was cancelled over a meeting by Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit with Kashmiri separatist leaders ‘for consultations’ ahead of the talks. India said it had expressed its displeasure in ‘clear and unambiguous terms’ to the envoy even before he was to meet the separatist leaders. The envoy went ahead and chose to ignore the warnings from New Delhi. Taking strong objection over the issue, the Indian government called-off the proposed dialogue between foreign secretaries of the two countries in Islamabad. 
 
Now that incident can be broadly looked upon from two perspectives. One is India’s tough message to Pakistan that its meddling with India’s internal affairs is unacceptable and unwarranted for, and the other message that goes out is that both the countries are not sincere enough in their approach toward normalizing their strained relations with each other. 
On a closer look, however, at the internal political crisis in Pakistan together with repeated ceasefire violations by Pakistani border forces in days leading up to the talks, and even more stepped-up firing and shelling from across the border following the cancellation of the talks, seem to suggest that India did the right thing, albeit in disguise some would say. It can be safely assumed that nothing substantive could have come out of the talks given that Pakistani PM is himself preoccupied with saving his own seat and government from unyielding protesters being led by cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan and his ally, cleric Muhammad Tahir ul-Qadri. They vociferously demand that the PM resigns and fresh elections be held and nothing less over alleged rigging in the General Elections that took place in 2013 in which his party swept to power on the national scene. 
 
Whatever, firing and talks cannot co-exist and no self-respecting government would allow that. For a lasting peace, Pakistan would have to completely dispense with its malicious designs against Indian state. Then only we can have a peaceful resolution to Kashmir issue: a flashpoint of many wars between the two countries both overt and covert and various other things. For now it all seems utopian. Talks are only a step in that direction. One can only hope that both the countries come together to the talking-table in a true spirit of bilateral engagement as early as possible.

The assault on the heavily guarded Central Prison in the city of Dera Ismail Khan took place despite reports that regional officials had received intelligence a fortnight ago suggesting such an attack was imminent.
The carefully planned attack underlines the growing capabilities of the Pakistani branch of the Taliban, an offshoot of the Islamist insurgents of the same name in neighboring Afghanistan.
Despite promising peace talks with the insurgents during an election campaign earlier this year, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif appears to be accepting that the use of military force may be unavoidable after a series of high-profile attacks.
The Pakistani Taliban said they had sent a squad of 100 fighters and seven suicide bombers on a mission to free some of their top leaders, and they said they released 250 prisoners - a number roughly matched by local Pakistani authorities.
Fighting continued into the early hours of Tuesday, with explosions and machine gunfire rattling the city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, on the edge of Pakistan's lawless tribal regions bordering Afghanistan.
At least 12 people were killed, officials said, including five policemen and four prisoners from the minority Shi'ite sect whose throats were slashed by gunmen, officials said. The Taliban are mostly majority Sunni Muslims.
Mushtaq Jadoon, the town's civil commissioner, said the 253 escaped prisoners included 30 top militants and six people on death row. Those who escaped are believed to have been whisked away to nearby South and North Waziristan, areas where the Taliban has strongholds.
As the attack unfolded, gunmen blew up electricity lines to the prison and detonated bombs to breach the outer walls.
They fought their way inside using rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns, and called the names of Taliban prisoners they wanted to release through loud speakers.
Once inside, attackers shot open most of the locks and used bombs to blast their way deep into the prison, shouting "All the locks are broken! Those who want to escape, now is your chance," prison officials who were there at the time told Reuters.
Security forces said they had imposed a curfew on the city and the gunbattle was over by dawn. A Reuters reporter at the scene saw security forces and bomb disposal squads conducting searches amid ruined walls strewn with bullet holes.
Police Constable Gul Mohammed said he had been rushing to the scene when he was confronted by two boys holding rifles.
"They told me to stop," he told Reuters. "I told them I am a policeman, and that's when they opened fire." He added that he was shot three times.
<h3>HEAVILY GUARDED JAIL</h3>
The attack came a year after a similar mass jailbreak in the northern town of Bannu which Taliban militants said was carried out with inside help from prison guards.
There was no official comment from the central government.
The audacity of the latest assault raised embarrassing questions over how well-prepared security forces are following a series of high-profile attacks, and underscores the challenges facing Pakistan's new government in combating the militancy.
The heavily guarded jail at Dera Ismail Khan houses around 5,000 prisoners. Around 250 are Pakistani Taliban and members of banned sectarian groups such as Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a Sunni militant group that has killed hundreds of Shi'ite civilians this year.
The attack comes the day lawmakers are due to choose a new president in a largely ceremonial vote, and two days before a major Shi'ite festival which security officials have warned could be attacked.
"It was a heavily guarded jail and considered one of the most protected prisons in the province," said a senior government official in Peshawar, capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
"We will investigate how the militants managed to come from the distant tribal areas and break into the jail and take away their people."
Another security official said provincial authorities received warning of the impending attack two weeks ago.
He said phone intercepts indicated the militants had been planning a jail break and interrogations of captured fighters confirmed it. Security officials had alerted the provincial governor of the threat based on the intercepts.
As the gunbattle unfolded, gunmen took over a nearby house and hospital, holding the residents hostage as they fired on police from the rooftops and laid ambushes for reinforcements.
A senior Taliban official told Reuters separately the attack on the prison was masterminded by Adnan Rashid, a Taliban commander who was himself freed when his prison in the northern town of Bannu was overran by militants last year.
After that attack, militants told Reuters they had been helped by insiders in the security services. An inquiry later found there were far fewer guards on duty than there should have been and those who were there lacked sufficient ammunition.
