And, I remember I wrote in my essay that they should start teaching science from Class 5 and not Class 7 or 8 because, otherwise, in the competitive exams we are at a disadvantage. And, believe it or not, the school accepted it," she told Business Insider. Godbole holds the Padma Shri, the highest civilian honour in India, as dearer because it is "like your parents patting you on the back." Women in India who have been conferred with the Padma Shri award usually come from the fields of art and music, medicine, health, and social work. However, Godbole is a rare case where the work of a woman from science has been recognised. I grew up in what one would call a typical middle-class family. But, they had always set a very high value on education. And, I grew up in Pune, which is in Maharashtra. It used to be called — at least once upon a time — the Oxbridge of India. So, it's a city well-known for its education. I studied in an all-girls school, which was perhaps the first English high school that was also a girls’ high school founded in Maharashtra — perhaps even in India. We were never taught general science, till 7th class. We were only taught home science. And, in 7th grade there used to be a scholarship called the State Merit Scholarship examination in which there used to be one paper on general science. Since I used to be pretty good in mathematics, my teachers actually took the trouble of working after hours with me. And that's when I started learning science. In fact, at the time, one of my class teacher’s husband — who was a science teacher — offered that I could talk to him in the evenings at his home, and he introduced me to many things outside the books in science. He taught me to read science magazines, and then I started taking part in science essay competitions because of him. This is how my science interest began. How does it feel to be among one of the few dozen women said this to win international accolade and recognition in the scientific field? OK, you know, I really wish people would stop thinking of us women scientists as women scientists. We happen to be scientists who happen to be women. But, I really look forward to the day when one is not slotted as a woman scientist. This is just my feeling and hope that I'm trying to express. But yes, I think I'm quite happy. Of course, I'm happy on a personal level. You don't do research for getting recognition. You do research for the joy of it. ... I think women getting these awards does have an additional plus side to it. It tells young girls that there is nothing special about it. That no, gender does not, and cannot play a role in it. A man and a woman can equally really get the honour. And, to me, that is actually one of the very best things that happens when women get awards. Why don't you tell us a little bit about your field of study? That's a question dear to my heart because that's what I've been doing for the last 50 years. Firstly doing it, then teaching it and finally doing research in it. The general subject that I'm working on is what we can call particle physics. And, the other word for the same subject is high energy physics. ... This is really kind of a study of what are the most fundamental constituents of nature and how those constituents are put together. The subject is somehow very interesting and very difficult to unravel at the same time because it's like completing a puzzle made out of Lego pieces. You want to understand what is the size and shape of the different Lego pieces which make the whole. And we're not allowed to take things apart, right? That is, to some extent, the nature of the work. ... The point is that efforts that have gone on trying to understand this have given us, for example, lasers, the Internet as well as semiconductors. Therefore, this kind of journey is at the heart of all matter. It has been going on for centuries, actually, almost two centuries. It has produced byproducts for our technology just because some of the things people have investigated, they have done it just for the heck of it. Then, what is the one piece of advice or word of caution that you would like to share with girls aspiring to join the scientific community? There is no word of caution. I mean frankly, I think whether you are studying science arts, or commerce, gender is not an issue — ever. Your gender cannot play a role in this. What plays a role is your intellectual abilities and your interest. There is nothing special about studying science compared to studying history. Each has its value. Each has its interest. And, one should just follow one's own mind. That is the one piece of advice I would give — that follow your own mind. Don't let others tell you whether maths is not for you or physics is not for you. An interview with an inspiring particle physicist from Pune who 'happens to be a woman'

The group of Padma Awards that includes Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri is known as the highest awards given by the Republic of India. They were all instituted together in the year 1954 and they are announced year on year on the Republic Day. The objective of these awards is to recognize, highlight and appreciate the ‘work of distinction’. They are given to persons or organizations that make some exceptional contribution or service in any field or discipline including Art, Medicine, Literature, Civil Service, Sports, Education, Social Work, Public Affairs, Science and Engineering, Trade and Industry etc. Participation in this venture Nominations are invited from the departments and ministries of the central government, state and the Union territory governments, awardees of the Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan awards, Institutes of Excellence and also from many other agencies, bodies, enterprises and organizations, so that the sample available for the consideration is as wide as possible. The MHA communication requests these organizations, bodies and individuals to spare the necessary effort to identify the exceptional persons or organizations who deserve to be recognized for their contribution. Padma Vibhushan seeks to recognize the exceptional and distinguished service, Padma Bhushan identifies the distinguished service of higher order and Padma Shri appreciates the distinguished service in any discipline or field. Actor <keyword id="333" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saif-Ali-Khan">Saif Ali Khan</keyword> would have never thought that a brawl with a commoner at a posh restaurant in Delhi might cost him the coveted civic honour he was facilitated a few years back. 
 
If reports are to be believed, the Union Home Ministry has asked the Mumbai Police to fasten up the process of sending a report on the alleged brawl involving the actor and a South African businessman Iqbal Sharma. 
 
An RTI activist, Subhash Agrawal, had demanded that Khan be stripped off the honour since he has been framed of serious charges in the case. 
 
"As regard to Saif Ali Khan, no response to this Ministry's letter No 1/3112014-Public dated August 20, 2014 has been received from Mumbai Police. Mumbai Police has been reminded to expedite the matter...," the Ministry said in the RTI response. 
 
Agrawal has demanded that such civic honours should be taken back from everyone who is facing controversial charges. 
 
There have been controversies about the award ever since the actor was honoured in 2010. The reasons range from his contribution to the cinema to the pending court cases against him for killing two black bucks. While the actor had first said that he felt undeserving on being awarded the honour, he later said that a look at the past couple of winners tells that you don’t need to have invented a nuclear bomb to get the award. 
 Whatever his reaction to the award was, the fact that he got into a brawl with a businessman barely two years after the honour did not go too well with some people. Moreover, people also said he received the honour because his mother and former actress <keyword id="1888" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sharmila-Tagore">Sharmila Tagore</keyword> was serving as the chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification when he was awarded the honour.

He is the inventor of a low-cost sanitary pad making machine and has innovated grass-roots mechanisms for generating awareness about traditional unhygienic practices around menstruation in rural India. His mini-machines, which can manufacture sanitary pads for less than a third of the cost of commercial pads, have been installed in 23 of the 29 states of India. He is currently planning to expand the production of these machines to 106 nations. 
 Taking an inspiration from this, Twinkle <keyword id="1983" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Khanna">Khanna</keyword> wanted to cast Akshay Kumar for this biopic ‘Pad Man’. And guess who’s directing the film? His death triggered an avalanche of tributes from eminent personalities from all walks of life and sports was no different. From being the title sponsor of the glitzy Indian Premier League of cricket to supporting lesser-followed sports like archery to owning a football team in the Indian Super League to sponsoring a high-profile chess tournament, the Tata group has been deeply involved with the country's sporting ecosystem. Most of this involvement grew during Ratan Tata's tenure. "He always believed in 'sports is the way of life' and we are happy to carry forward the legacy. We have been the torchbearer of sports with 19 sporting verticals from football, hockey, archery to horse riding, boxing, karate, racket sports. You name it, we have it," an official involved with the JRD Tata Sports Academy, which was inaugurated in 1991 in Jamshedpur, told PTI. The growth in Tata Group's sporting involvement under Ratan Tata was the continuation of a legacy. After all, Sir Dorabji Tata, who played cricket, tennis and football, was the first President of the Indian Olympic Association (1924). This was after he had financed the Olympic appearance of four track-and-field athletes and two wrestlers at the Antwerp Games, helping organise their trials in Pune as well. Tata Steel Chess, which is also called the 'Wimbledon of chess', is a marquee event on global chess calendar, held at <keyword id="20385206" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wijk-aan-zee" source="keywords">Wijk Aan Zee</keyword>, the Netherlands. It wasn't always known that. It was Corus Chess Tournament for the longest time before Tata Steel took over the title sponsor company, thereby claiming the rights of this event from 2007 onwards. "TFA has played a pioneering role in Indian football by focusing on nurturing young talent and contributing significantly to the development of football in the country," the official associated with JRD sports complex said. "He (Ratan Tata) was there at the launch of Jamshedpur FC in the ISL in 2017. he interacted with the players and coaches, took photos with them. They also presented him with a signed jersey. He was very happy to see the team coming up and playing in the top tier ISL," he recalled. The enigmatic businessman was there to launch the hockey academy in Jamshedpur in 2019. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis presented him with special mementoes. In 2021, he also became a recipient of Padma Shri, The fourth-highest civilian award in the Republic of India. "It feels really special to receive the award under the tenures of Modi ji and President Ram Nath Kovind ji. It's a big thing for me. I am extremely happy. I have been waiting for a long time to get this award and now I have finally received it," Wadkar earlier told ANI. Wadkar is known for his playback singing in Hindi and Marathi. He has been enthralling audiences for over 45 years now. He has also carved a niche for himself in devotional music. 'Sapne Mein Milti Hai', 'Pehli Baar Mohabbat Ki Hai' and 'Lagi Aaj Saawan Ki' are some of his popular tracks. When we woke up this morning and reached for our phones to make our presence felt on the internet, little did we expect <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword>’s homepage to pay tribute to a man whose birthday we’d forgotten over the birthday of our beloved Prime <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=narendra+modi">Minister Narendra Modi</a> and the homecoming of Ganesha, popularly known as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/GodSaveTheOcean-This-Ganesh-Chaturthi-Mumbai-NGO-makes-idols-that-fish-can-eat/articleshow/48786857.cms">Ganesh Chaturthi</a>. 
 Maqbool Fida Husain, the renowned Indian <keyword id="6448302" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Painter">painter</keyword> would have turned 100 today. 
 
In keeping with his cubist style, Google used Husain’s favourite colours to come up with an abstract geometrical illustration comprising circles and a painted portrait of the late artist holding a brush, at the centre. 
 
The Padma Shri award winner had relocated to London and Dubai after numerous death threats and lawsuits from right-wing Hindu fundamentalists over his depiction of Hindu gods. 
 
At the age of 95, the maestro breathed his last in London on June 29, 2011 where he used to spend his summers while on his self-imposed exile. 
 
The multi-faceted painter was also an accomplished illustrator, photographer and filmmaker. 
 
However, despite his greatness, people of his own country forced him to go on a self-imposed exile and give up Indian citizenship. 
 If that was not enough, a section of people who took to social media to express their astonishment at Google choosing the late artist for its tribute and not <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>., while the rest joined in on the rituals of wishing the famed painter a Happy Birthday. 
 
Soon enough, M. F Husain started trending on Twitter, as well- which brings me to my original point. 
 
Would M.F Husain be the subject of all this fanfare had he not featured on the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/The-5-best-Google-Doodles-of-all-time/articleshow/47338021.cms">Google Doodle</a> today? Would we have gone about our usual day celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi and wishing the leader of the largest democracy in the world, but forgetting to spare more than a minute for one of the greatest painters India has seen? 
 
Before nodding your head to say ‘No, we would not,’ do bear in mind we are the same country who took offense to his painting depicting Hindu gods, labeled him anti-Hindu, mainly due to his religion, harassed him non-stop and protested against his existence in the country he was born in, while burning his posters. 
 
We failed in giving him the treatment he deserved when he was alive and we would have failed in revering him today too, had it not been for Google reminding us about Husain's unapologetic devotion to beauty, people, and the world. 
 
If that’s not enough, there are also some people who want Google to apologise for featuring Husain on their doodle. 
 
A Happy Bithday indeed.
