The group of Padma Awards that includes Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri is known as the highest awards given by the Republic of India. They were all instituted together in the year 1954 and they are announced year on year on the Republic Day. The objective of these awards is to recognize, highlight and appreciate the ‘work of distinction’. They are given to persons or organizations that make some exceptional contribution or service in any field or discipline including Art, Medicine, Literature, Civil Service, Sports, Education, Social Work, Public Affairs, Science and Engineering, Trade and Industry etc. Participation in this venture Nominations are invited from the departments and ministries of the central government, state and the Union territory governments, awardees of the Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan awards, Institutes of Excellence and also from many other agencies, bodies, enterprises and organizations, so that the sample available for the consideration is as wide as possible. The MHA communication requests these organizations, bodies and individuals to spare the necessary effort to identify the exceptional persons or organizations who deserve to be recognized for their contribution. These persons and bodies can make suitable nominations for the deserving individuals they find out. Nominations and recommendations Both the nominations and recommendations for the group of Padma awards have to be done only online on the Padma portal <a href="http://www.padmaawards.gov.in">www.padmaawards.gov.in</a>. Any citizen of India can make the nomination or recommendation. Self-nominations are also allowed. The nomination or recommendation must contain the complete details asked in the format provided in this portal for this purpose. A citation is also called for including a narration that can run to about 800 words which will clearly bring out the exceptional or distinguished achievement or service of the person or organization nominated or recommended or self-nominated for the Padma award in their respective field or discipline. All the necessary details asked must be carefully filled in for the nomination to be considered. About Padma Awards Any person or organization can apply for the Padma awards without any distinction to caste, race, occupation, gender or position. Padma Vibhushan seeks to recognize the exceptional and distinguished service, Padma Bhushan identifies the distinguished service of higher order and Padma Shri appreciates the distinguished service in any discipline or field. The MHA communication requests that every effort must be spared to find the suitable persons for the Padma awards from among women, weaker sections of the society, Divyang persons, SCs and STs who really deserve to be given this award. No Government servant who is working in the PSUs is eligible for these awards excepting doctors and scientists. Rules governing the Padma Awards The Padma awards are not given posthumously excepting in some highly deserving cases. Padma Award can be conferred on a person only if five years have elapsed after the conferment of the earlier Padma award except in some deserving cases. The President of India presents these awards consisting of a Sanad (Certificate) signed by the President and a medallion. The names of the awardees are published in the Gazette of India. The recipients will also get a replica of the medallion which they can wear during any ceremonies or events. The Padma award is not a title and it must never be used as a suffix or prefix to the awardees’ name. The total number of awards given in a year will not exceed 120.

This year, India which sent Chandrayaan-2 to space, has more reasons to celebrate the birthday of the multitalented innovator and physicist. Sarabhai is called the father of India’s space programme, after he established the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in 1962. ‘Not a fantasy’ Ever since, many things related to space are named after him. in 1973, India named a cavity on the moon in his honour with the name ‘Vikram’. The lander which will drop Chandrayaan-2 onto the moon on September 7, is also called Vikram. Sarabhai has chalked the strategy of ISRO early on, too. "There are some who question the relevance of space activities in a developing nation. To us, there is no ambiguity of purpose. We do not have the fantasy of competing with the economically advanced nations in the exploration of the moon or the planets or manned space-flight,” he had said. C.V. Raman’s protege Sarabhai was born on 12 August 1919 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He studied from University of Cambridge with a major in science. He later joined the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and began research in cosmic rays under the guidance of Nobel winner Sir C.V. Raman. "To us there is no ambiguity of purpose. We are convinced that if we are to play a meaningful role nationally and in the comity of nations, we must be second to none in the application of advanced technologies to the real problems of man and society," news agency IANS reported citing Vikram’s statement. At the age of 28, he established the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad. He had then set up the first rocket launching station in India. In 1966, he was awarded with Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, six years later. He was also Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. Along with other Ahmedabad-based industrialists, he played a major role in the creation of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. Google Doodle is celebrating Vikram Sarabhai’s 100th birthday — the father of Indian space programme

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis presented him with special mementoes. In 2021, he also became a recipient of Padma Shri, The fourth-highest civilian award in the Republic of India. "It feels really special to receive the award under the tenures of Modi ji and President Ram Nath Kovind ji. It's a big thing for me. I am extremely happy. I have been waiting for a long time to get this award and now I have finally received it," Wadkar earlier told ANI. Wadkar is known for his playback singing in Hindi and Marathi. He has been enthralling audiences for over 45 years now. He has also carved a niche for himself in devotional music. 'Sapne Mein Milti Hai', 'Pehli Baar Mohabbat Ki Hai' and 'Lagi Aaj Saawan Ki' are some of his popular tracks. His earliest hit numbers were 'Sona Kare jhilmil jhilmil' (film 'Paheli'), 'Seene Me Jalan' ('Gaman'), which reportedly caught late legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar's attention and she recommended him to other top music composers of the day. On coming a long way in his journey, Wadkar said, "I feel blessed on getting opportunities to work with big makers in the industry. There's no bigger achievement than people's love. Luckily, I have been able to achieve that through my work. It's every artist's dream to receive this award. I started singing at the age of 4 and till now have sung 30,000 to 40,000 songs." (ANI)

Veteran singer Suresh Wadkar receives Lata Mangeshkar Award

India's M.C. <keyword id="47387" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mary-Kom">Mary Kom</keyword> has created history again in real-life. She defeated Zhaina Shekerbekova of <keyword id="6380984" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kazakhstan">Kazakhstan</keyword> and clinched her first gold in an Asian Games. This is India's seventh gold at Incheon, South Korea. 
 
The world number five was at her magnificent best in the final bout of the Asian Games women's flyweight (48-51 kg) division. 
 
While Shekerbekova, who is six years junior to 31-year-old Mary, made a good start winning the first round. However, Mary used her greater experience to pave her way to victory. Using a combination of right and left jabs, Mary won the next three rounds as the audience kept cheering her up at the Seonhak Gymnasium in Incheon. 
 
Using her experience from 14 years of boxing, Mary Kom smartly analysed Shekerbekova's approach before showcasing her super power to the Kazak. The Padma Bhushan award winner, then, rushed to claim top honours in the event. 
 
Recently, Mary Kom was also in news for the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Box-Office-Mary-Kom-Delivers-A-Big-Punch/articleshow/42041970.cms">beautiful sport biopic</a> titled after name. He is the inventor of a low-cost sanitary pad making machine and has innovated grass-roots mechanisms for generating awareness about traditional unhygienic practices around menstruation in rural India. His mini-machines, which can manufacture sanitary pads for less than a third of the cost of commercial pads, have been installed in 23 of the 29 states of India. He is currently planning to expand the production of these machines to 106 nations. 
 Taking an inspiration from this, Twinkle <keyword id="1983" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Khanna">Khanna</keyword> wanted to cast Akshay Kumar for this biopic ‘Pad Man’. And guess who’s directing the film?
