With so many highway movies doing the rounds, sojourning from city to city and state to state feels like a romantic prelude to a long <keyword id="6374782" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="journey">journey</keyword> of self-discovery – till reality strikes.  As we have mentioned before, expressways are limited-access roads designed for high-speed traffic. The economic impact of an <keyword id="2074705" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Expressway-network">expressway network</keyword> criss-crossing the country is all too obvious and the <keyword id="6404450" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Road-Transport-and-Highways">Ministry of Road Transport and Highways</keyword> (MoRTH) has already recommended a total <keyword id="2074707" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="E-way-network">e-way network</keyword> of about 18,637 km in the country. Development work is being done in three phases and is scheduled to be completed by 2022. During the Interim Budget, <keyword id="6355261" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Finance-minister">Finance Minister</keyword> <keyword id="43940" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="P-Chidambaram">P Chidambaram</keyword> also told the Parliament the road network in the country witnessed over sevenfold increase at 3.89 lakh km over the past decade. 
 Does that mean we may soon see an <keyword id="2074709" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="E-way-ecosystem">e-way ecosystem</keyword> similar to the interstate system in the US? Given the obstacles in terms of <keyword id="6364579" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Land-acquisition">land acquisition</keyword>, <keyword id="414903" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="fund-crunch">fund crunch</keyword> and <keyword id="2074714" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Slow-implementation">slow implementation</keyword>, it’s definitely going to take some time. Meanwhile, hop into the driver’s seat and go off exploring some super-fast roads you have not travelled yet. After all, it’s a journey with no end… and wheels will always need roads.

Travelling around the wonderland that is India is a thrilling experience, especially when fast-moving super <keyword id="168020" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="expressways">expressways</keyword> are right here to ensure some wonderful on-the-road vacations. Of course there are business travellers who are in a hurry to reach their destinations and <keyword id="2053038" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Super-fast-expressways">super fast expressways</keyword> minus traffic snarls suit them down to the ground. As we mentioned before, expressways are controlled-access highways like the freeways or motorways or autobahnen in the US and Europe, essentially designed for high-speed traffic. As of now, most of the expressways in India are 6-8 lane toll <keyword id="6358996" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="roads">roads</keyword> and cover a total distance of nearly 1,208.19 km.

Open Roads Return: 6 Super
Expressways In West & North-west India

HYDERABAD: The year was 1992. So engrossed was the nation with economic liberalization that nothing else was supposed to matter. In the least, the wedding of <keyword id="2048745" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Anupama-Priyadarshini">Anupama Priyadarshini</keyword> to her 24-year-old beau, <keyword id="276564" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Satya-Nadella">Satya Nadella</keyword>. 
 But then, this low-key family affair in New Delhi eventually ended up becoming a talking point, thanks to an illustrious guest who decided to turn up at the venue uninvited. It was the then <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> P V <keyword id="6358441" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Narasimha-Rao">Narasimha Rao</keyword>. 
 
"They (the families) had planned a simple event without fanfare. But Rao found out about it and gatecrashed. He even scolded them (his two prized secretaries) for not inviting him," recalled Anupama's cousin Dinesh S Sastry, who shuttles between Washington DC and San Francisco, over e-mails from the US. "This just shows how humble the families were," Sastry repeatedly appeared to stress, all through his fond recollections of that day over two decades ago. 
 
His "uncle" (the husband of his mother's first cousin) K R Venugopal, Anupama's father, was then secretary to the PM, in-charge of Kashmir affairs and social development, while Nadella's father, B N Yugandhar, was special secretary to the PM. 
 
"Even during their days in Seattle thereafter, this inherited simplicity did not leave their side," Sastry, a trustee of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), wrote about his Andhra food-crazy brother-in-law and wife who frequented his parents' home there. 
 Nadella's sincerity back then, when he shuttled between Seattle and University of Chicago for his MBA course, was hard not to notice. "He always tried to avail of discounted tickets," Sastry shared, through one of his numerous mails, packed with pride. Pride also because he strongly believes he was one of the first few to have predicted Satya's journey to the <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> boss' chair, as early as last summer when the now CEO was named the company's executive vice president, Cloud &amp; Enterprise. 
 
Even then, like now, he had taken to Twitter to congratulate his industrious cousin, who, fascinatingly loves to a shake leg, every so often. "They (Satya and Anupama) went dancing over weekends sometimes in Seattle. Sad, they might not be able to do that anymore," Sastry added as a footnote about the happy duo with three "music-loving, talented children in grade school". 
 But his respect for Venugopal uncle appeared the strongest. The uncle managed to floor former US First Lady <keyword id="3043" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Hillary-Clinton">Hillary Clinton</keyword> during her trip to India in 1995. "They (the Clintons) met both Yugandhar and Venugopal to discuss social development of women and children, along with Kashmir affairs. During lunch, my uncle quoted George Bernard Shaw on marriage and that left a lasting impression on Hillary," Sastry shared. 
 
Given this glittering legacy, perhaps the smitten cousin is not too off the mark when he writes, "...couldn't happen to better people", in praise of his 'Big Brother' and the latest feather in his cap.

Every region had its own wealthy like the Shrirams, Thapars, Nandas, and Modis in the north or the Bangurs in the east or the Mafatlals, Walchands, Kirloskars, Khataus, Sarabhais and Lalbhais in the west and the M.A. Chidambaram group in the south. Over time, many groups have floundered and fallen on bad times. There are many defining moments in this journey which saw a debilitating impact on family industrial groups. The year 1964 was a turning point because this was when the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission was established. By that year, the MRTP Commission had finished collecting and sifting information on Indian big business and hence reliable data was available. The next interesting inflection point came in 1991, when the P.V. Narasimha Rao administration introduced the New Economic Policy. This is where it all changed - India's most radical policy document in the form of the New Industrial Policy - the Licence Permit Raj was scrapped on 24 July 1991. Democratic socialism had been consigned to the rubbish heap of history - Licence Raj, which was in place for four decades, came to an end with the new industrial policy announced by Finance Minister Manmohan Singh and Prime Minister P.V. Narsimha Rao, who also held the portfolio of Industries Minister. The New Industrial Policy proposed getting rid of Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices and abolishing industrial licensing for all but 18 industries. Foreign equity holdings were proposed to be raised by 51 per cent in a project. Indian industry was free of controls and bureaucracy like never before. Over the last 30 years, India Inc had been turned on its head. As per the Bloomberg Billionaires Index now, Gautam Adani is ranked 4th in the world with a total net worth of $125 billion. Adani is followed by Mukesh Ambani at number 10 with a net worth of $83.6 billion. However, after Adani and Ambani the gap widens by a large extent and is then taken up by the software czars. The next rank from India is number 45 for Azim Premji of Wipro with a net worth of $ 24.6 billion. Shiv Nadar of HCL Technologies is at number 51 on the index with a net worth of $22.8 billion. The representation from India is then only at number 101 with Dilip Shanghvi with a net worth of $14.9 billion followed by Cyrus Poonawalla at 102 with $14.8 billion. Lakhsmi Mittal is at 103 with a net worth of $14.7 billion. Uday Kotak is ranked 106 with a net worth of $13.7 billion. Savitri Jindal is ranked at 119 on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index with a net worth of $12.9 billion. Sunil Mittal is ranked at 134 with a net worth of $12.2 billion. Kumar Birla is at 159 with a net worth of $10.8 billion. Hyderabad, Feb 19 (): Describing India's latest taxreform GSTas "the biggest madness of the 21st century," BJPleader and Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy on Wednesday saidthat the country needs to grow at 10 per cent per annum tobecome a superpower by 2030.He also demanded that former Prime Minister, late P VNarasimha Rao, be given the highest civilian award, the BharatRatna, for the reforms he introduced during his tenure.Speaking on "India - an Economic Superpower by 2030",organised by the Pragna Bharati here, Swamy said though thecountry had achieved eight per cent growth from time to time,there had been no improvements on the reforms brought in bythe Congress leader."So how to get that 3.7 per cent (efficiency factor toutilize investments)? (We need to)fight corruption, second,reward those who will invest.Don't terrorise them (investors) with income tax and thisGST, which is the biggest madness of the 21st century.This GST is so complicated (that) nobody understandswhich form to fill where.And they wanted it to be uploaded to the computer.Somebody came from Rajasthan, Barmer...He said we donthave electricity, how can we upload?So I said upload it on your head and go to the PrimeMinister and tell him," Swamy said on improving efficiencylevels of investments.He opined that India should grow at 10 per cent per annumfor the next 10 years to become a superpower.If this momemntum continued, then it would overtake Chinaand also challenge the U.S. for the number one position in 50years, he said.Swamy said the problem India currently faces is shortageof demand as people do not have money to spend, therebyhindering the economic cycle."You want 10 per cent growth rate, then investment rateto the GDP should be 37 per cent and 3.7 per cent should beyour efficiency factor and not five per cent as it is today,"he said, suggesting that Income tax be abolished to removecorruption and achieve higher economic growth.Pitching for the Bharat Ratna for Narasimha Rao, the BJPleader said that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, asFinance Minister in Rao's cabinet, implemented the reforms inthe 1990s. "After (PV's regime) that, we have been achieving eightper cent from time to time. But we have not improved on thereforms that Narasimha Rao brought in.We need to do it now. Your question is will we be aneconomic superpower by 2030 in 10 years?
