<p><keyword id="6358540" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sony">Sony</keyword> made a surprise product announcement today for a device called the <keyword id="1861150" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="PS-Vita-TV">PS Vita TV</keyword>.</p>
<p>The tiny gadget is a very similar to the Apple TV and Roku.</p>
<p>The PS Vita TV will only be available in Japan at first. It'll cost the equivalent of about $95 U.S., putting it in the same price range as the $99 Apple TV. Sony's box has a slot that lets you load up games for the PlayStation Vita, Sony's portable video game console, so you can play them on the big screen using a regular PlayStation controller. It can also play some games from the original PlayStation.</p>
<p>The Vita TV will be able to connect to the upcoming PlayStation 4 console and will let you wirelessly beam games from the console to the Vita TV if the Vita TV is in another room. <span>That's the most exciting feature. With one PS$ console, you could theoretically play your games in any room in the house.</span></p>
<p>Finally, the Vita TV has Hulu and some other streaming video services specific to Japan. The company did not announce when or if the device will launch in the U.S., but it will launch in Japan in November.</p>

<p><span>And it doesn't look like Netflix will ever be available for the device. "We have no current support plans for Netflix on PS TV," Netflix reps <a href="http://gizmodo.com/playstation-tv-isnt-what-you-want-it-to-be-1646323968">told Gizmodo</a>. </span></p>
<p><span>But that isn't the point of the PlayStation TV. The point is playing games. And in that respect, it seems to do a good job. </span></p>
<p><span>Rather than a streaming device that plays games, think of the PS TV as a Vita that hooks up to your TV. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">It's $99 for the system itself. You'll also need to buy a DualShock controller, which must be purchased separately and costs about $40. Or for $139, you can a bundle that includes a controller and a Lego game, as well as an 8GB memory card.</span></p>

But keep in mind that many people buying the PlayStation TV are probably already in the PlayStation ecosystem and probably already own at least one controller. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">It doesn't play every game that Sony offers, <a href="https://support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5376/~/games-compatible-with-playstation-tv">only the ones on this list</a>. Some of the Vita games aren't compatible yet, but that could be fixed with a system update. It's still a huge bevvy of games, and having the option to play old PS One classic games is a win. It's similar to what Nintendo does with the <a href="http://www.nintendo.com/wiiu/eshop/virtual-console/">Virtual Console on the Wii U</a>. </span></p>
<p>But its killer feature is something called Remote Play, which is where you can sync it with a PlayStation 4 and play PS4 games on another TV in the house. That's great news for families or roommates who want to share the PS4 but not all the time.</p>
<p>The one caveat is that in order to have a really smooth playing experience, both the PS4 and the PS TV should be connected via an Ethernet connection. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Still, that might be a small price to pay for essentially a second PS4 in a different room. </span></p>
<p>Microsoft doesn't have a set-top box or a "remote play" feature with the Xbox One. </p>
<p>The PS TV isn't for everyone. Renting games through PlayStation Now can be <a href="http://kotaku.com/playstation-now-is-still-way-too-expensive-1614022375">expensive</a> and <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2014/08/01/playstation-now-isnt-too-expensive-its-just-too-complicated/">complicated</a>. And $99 seems pricey for a little box that doesn't stream. Sony has hinted that it's working on a <a href="http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/07/sony-working-on-subscription-plan-for-playstation-now-streaming/">subscription plan</a> for PlayStation Now, however. </p>
<p>But for people already in the PlayStation universe, or for people just entering the gaming world (and who don't want to drop $600 on a full-on console), the PlayStation TV might be a sure bet. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>

<p>Users will be able to play a variety of PS3, PlayStation One, and PSP classic games through Sony's streaming game service <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/playstation-now/" target="_blank">PlayStation Now</a>. PlayStation TV owners will also have access music and video streaming services.</p>
<p><span>If you have a PlayStation 4, the device will connect with it and allow </span><span>you to play PS4 games on another TV in your home. </span></p>
<p>The console isn't a new concept. It was first released in Japan November 2013 as the PS Vita TV.</p>
<p>Consumers will need a PlayStation DualShock 3 controller to use the device that will not come with $99 standalone PlayStation TV.</p>

<p>You'll finally be able to play old PlayStation games on the PS4 starting this summer.</p>
<p>Tuesday at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Sony revealed <a href="http://us.playstation.com/playstationnow/" target="_blank">PlayStation Now</a>, a cloud-based service that will allow gamers to stream PS3 games to the PS4 console.</p>
<p>We've known this would happen at some point this year. </p>
<p class="p1">As we've previously reported, PlayStation Now (PS Now) will <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/do-ps3-games-work-on-ps4-2013-11">use the Gaikai streaming service</a> to stream games onto the PS4 console.</p>
<p class="p1">Sony acquired Gaikai for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sony-plans-a-cloud-based-gaming-service-after-acquiring-interactive-cloud-based-gaming-company-gaikai-inc-for-3-2012-7">$380 million in 2012</a>.</p>
<p class="p1"><strong>From the <a href="http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/news/20140108_2.pdf" target="_blank">official announcement</a>: </strong></p>

<p class="p1"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Before you get overly excited, here's what you need to know about the PS Now service.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><strong>Will I be able to play all of the games I own for the PlayStation, PS2, AND PS3 on the PlayStation 4?</strong> </p>
<p class="p1">Nope.</p>
<p class="p1">Though the titles may be available to stream on the PS4, if you already own any of the games, Sony won't have a way to recognize your previous purchases.</p>
<p class="p1"><a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2014/01/07/playstation-now-video-game-streaming-service-brings-old-games-to-your-tv-ps4/" target="_blank">From Forbes</a>: </p>
<p class="p1" style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>"According to Sony, gamers who own disc or digital-based games will not have access to those games via PS Now free of charge."</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span>That's probably not going to sit well with gamers. Why would anyone want to repurchase titles they've spent hundreds of dollars on already? This probably won't be as much of an issue with PS3 titles since most can be upgraded to PS4 games for an additional fee.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span>The bigger concern we see is that <span>you would probably need to restart all of your old games </span>since there's no outlet to insert any sort of PlayStation/PS2 memory card in the PS4.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><strong>What games will I be able to play?</strong></p>
<p class="p1">For those wary of the asterisk from the announcement above, there is no current list of titles that will be available. </p>
<p class="p1"><span>We've reached out to see if we can find out any info on titles and will share when available. We imagine "Beyond: Two Souls," "God of War: Ascension," "The Last of Us," and "Puppeteer" will be available since CES attendees are able to try them out with on the PS Now at the event.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><strong>What else does this PS Now service do?</strong></p>
<p class="p1">PS Now will also allow people to play PlayStation games on smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs. </p>
<p class="p1">Obviously, Sony is aware mobile games are a threat to the game console. </p>
<p class="p1"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">For Sony, adapting and evolving the technology at hand is a great opportunity to deliver great-looking games people want to play on the go.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><strong>Will I have to pay for the PS Now service?</strong></p>
<p class="p1"><span>Yes.</span></p>
<p class="p1">President of Sony Computer Entertainment, Andrew House announced at CES there will be multiple payment models ranging from rental to subscription for the PS Now.</p>
<p class="p1">Sounds similar to a Netflix model.</p>
<p class="p1"><strong>When can I start streaming old games on the PS4?</strong></p>
<p class="p1">PS Now will launch in the US this summer. There's no specific release date yet.</p>
<p class="p1">A beta program begins at the end of the month for the product.</p>

<p>We got our first look at the set-top box <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/playstation-tv-2014-6">at the E3 video game conference in June</a>. The PlayStation TV will allow you to play PS3, PlayStation One, and PSP classic games through Sony's streaming-game service, PlayStation Now. It will also give you access to music and video-streaming services, much like Amazon's Fire TV or the Apple TV. </p>

The Switch has now sold 8.12 million units in Japan&#xa0; while the PlayStation 4 has sold 6.91 million units, <a href="https://www.famitsu.com/news/201905/15176251.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">based on sales figures from Famitsu,</a> a Japanese gaming magazine.</p><p>Keep in mind that the PlayStation 4 has been available for 5 years in Japan, while the Switch is only two years old.</p><p>The PlayStation 4 remains the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/playstation-4-lifetime-sales-2019-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">most popular console worldwide,</a> with nearly 100 million units sold, but gamers in Japan account for less than 10% of global sales. Daniel Ahmad, a senior analyst for Niko Partners, constructed a chart comparing the sales growth of several video game consoles from their initial release dates. Yahoo Goes All-In On Mobile Video With New "Channel Surfing" App And Viacom Partnership

<p class="p1">After Microsoft's press conference earlier in the day Monday, all eyes were on Sony, the current market leader in the next-gen console race, to deliver at its E3 press conference Monday night with enough PlayStation 4 content to keep gamers sated for the next year.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p class="p1">Sony stepped up to the plate, and then some. The company's press conference was filled with exciting announcements including several welcome surprises.</p>
<p class="p1">Counting them all up, Sony made roughly 25 truly significant announcements at last night's event. Games-wise, Sony offered a little bit of every genre, from action/adventure games ("Far Cry," "The Order: 1886," "Metal Gear Solid V") to horror games ("Bloodborne," "Dead Island 2") to artistic games anyone could play ("Entwined" and "Abzu"). </p>

"LittleBigPlanet 3" will <span>be a sure-fire hit this holiday season, while the classic fighting game "Mortal Kombat" is back with a vengeance for "Mortal Kombat X." The action franchise "Uncharted" will return in 2015 with <span>"Uncharted 4: A Thief's End," a</span>nd then there's "Batman: Arkham Knight" coming later this year, which looks <span>absolutely stunning. "The Last Of Us" and "Grand Theft Auto V," two of the most successful and popular games from last year, will be remastered for their respective releases in 2014, while Tim Schafer and the Double Fine crew are bringing back the neo-noir cult classic adventure game, "Grim Fandango," just for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita owners.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span>There were some surprises too - chief among them was "No Man's Sky," which could </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">be the sci-fi game to end all sci-fi games. "No Man's Sky" drops you on a random planet in an infinite procedural universe - no two players in the game will start on the same planet, guaranteeing a unique experience for every gamer. And since everything is procedural, there are no loading times as you traverse entire planets and hop in your rocket ship and fly to other planets or engage in space battles.</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span>Sony could've stopped at its impressive game lineup, but the company kept its foot on the gas. Some hardware announcements: The company will sell a special white PlayStation 4 as a bundle with "Destiny," the next big sci-fi franchise from "Halo" creator Bungie coming later this year. Sony will also release its $99 PlayStation TV in the U.S., which lets you stream games from your PS4 to another TV in your house.</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span> In </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">the realm of software, PS4 gamers will soon be able to share their moments through YouTube. The company's </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">game streaming service PlayStation Now is also set to arrive on PS4, and then PS3 and PlayStation Vita shortly thereafter. The service will launch its first beta on July 31.</span></p>

<p class="p1">This isn't to say Microsoft has a bad lineup for Xbox One; quite the contrary, there are several exciting games coming for that console, too: "Sunset Overdrive," "Evolve," "Fable Legends," and of course, plenty of "Halo" titles are all on the way. But with the exception of Halo's "Master Chief Collection" coming this year, we won't see a new "Halo" game until late next year - a full two years after the release of the Xbox One. That's like Nintendo being unable to churn out a new Mario game; the franchise is absolutely central to the console.</p>
<p class="p1">Not so with Sony's PlayStation 4. Sure, it has its stars like Sackboy (he'll be back in time for Christmas), but if Monday night's press conference proved anything, it's that Sony has a substantial balance of power across genres, developers and titles, and a considerable amount of passion, to boot. After its E3 press conference, it looks like Sony's network is only getting stronger.</p>

Sony Completely Dominated Microsoft At This Week's E3 Video Game Conference

<p>We say "sort of" because Sony only gave us a taste of what the PS4 will be able to do. We don't even know what the hardware will look like.</p>
<p>Still, we did learn about some interesting features coming to the PS4 when it launches later this year.</p>
<p>Keep in mind Sony didn't demonstrate most of these features, so we're not sure how everything will work quite yet. (And we suspect Sony doesn't either).</p>
<p>Anyway, here's what we do know so far:</p>
<h3><span>Streaming games</span></h3>
<p><span><span>Sony owns a company called Gaikai that lets you stream games over the Internet. It wasn't entirely clear from Sony's presentation how this would work, but it sounds like you'll be able to play older PS3 games this way. No disc necessary.</span></span></p>
<h3><span><span><span>Test a game before you buy</span></span></span></h3>
<p><span><span><span>Using Gaikai's streaming technology, you'll be able to test a game over the Internet before you buy it. </span></span></span></p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Sony briefly mentioned you'll be able to stream content from popular services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Instant.  </span></p>
<h3>The new controller</h3>
<p>It's called the DualShock 4 and looks very similar to the current PS3 controller, except it has a touchpad in the middle and a colored light at the top.</p>
<h3>Beam games to a handheld system</h3>
<p>The PS4 can act as a "hub" for your games and beam them to Sony's handheld console, the PlayStation Vita.</p>
<h3>Smartphone and tablet apps</h3>
<p>Sony will have PS4 apps for Android and iOS devices that display extra content to help you out with your games. Sony didn't demo this on stage, but its description of the apps says you'll be able to stream videos of your friends playing games, purchase new titles, and interact with games on your TV.</p>
<h3>Share your screen in real time</h3>
<p>The PS4's social features will let your friends watch you play from their own consoles in real time. They can also interact with your game by sending you messages or adding items.</p>
<h3>Share video clips of your games</h3>
<p>The PS4 controller will have a special "Share" button that lets you upload clips of your gameplay to social networks like Facebook and UStream.</p>
<h3>Graphics</h3>
<p>The graphics chip in the PS4 is pretty impressive. The game demos we saw, especially the racing game Driveclub, had insanely realistic graphics. This will be huge for hardcore gamers.</p>
<h3>New games</h3>
<p>Sony spent the bulk of its presentation showing off new games coming to the PS4. But the two biggest announcements came from the studios Blizzard and Bungie. Blizzard says it will bring the popular "Diablo III" game to the PS4. Bungie, which has traditionally developed games only for the Xbox, will launch its new game "Destiny" on the PS4. </p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">We have no idea what the console will look like, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130221/seven-questions-for-sonys-jack-tretton-following-the-playstation-4-event/">and neither does Sony</a>. We only got a brief glance at what the main menu and operating system will look like. We have no idea what kind of apps and streaming content will be available beyond the basics like Netflix and Hulu that are already on the PS3. We don't know how much it'll cost.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">It's pretty clear the PS4 doesn't exist yet.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">And in an odd twist, it feels like we know more about <a href="http://kotaku.com/5982986/we-know-all-about-the-next-xbox-from-someone-who-says-theyve-got-one">Microsoft's unannounced next-generation Xbox</a> than we do about the console Sony attempted to unveil last night.</span></p>
<p>The closest we got to new PS4 hardware was a look at the controller and a list of PC parts that will power the console. (B<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">ased on that information, you could pretty much build your own PS4 with computer parts readily available on </span><a href="http://www.newegg.com/">sites like Newegg</a>).</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>Here's the problem.</span></span></p>
<p>We've moved beyond the era where video game console makers can wow crowds with graphics so good your eyes will bleed and crazy powerful hardware specs. That may get the hardcore gaming crowd excited, but if the PS4 is going to be a hit Sony should be thinking about what normal people want on their TV. There's still a huge opportunity for someone to swoop in and completely dominate the living room, but it doesn't feel like Sony cares about that.</p>
<p>All we saw yesterday was demo after demo after demo after demo of games that appeal to Sony's loyal fanbase. There's little reason for anyone else to care.</p>
<p>The real challenges for Sony's PS4 venture are how it will handle social gaming and the recent mobile gaming craze on devices like smartphones and tablets. We got a taste of that last night when we saw how the PS4 can beam games wirelessly to Sony's handheld PlayStation Vita gaming system. And there are some cool sharing features that will let you upload videos of your gaming sessions to Facebook and Ustream by pressing a "Share" button on the controller.</p>
<p>Unfortunately for Sony, all of that cool stuff felt empty during last night's event, and there are some doubts the PS4 will be able to fulfill Sony's promise to deliver streaming games to the console.</p>
<p>No one expected the PS4 to be 100% finished, but most expected to at least get a look at the hardware and get a better idea of how it'll work in the real world. The entire event felt like a ploy to get ahead of Microsoft's impending next-generation Xbox announcement. The result was <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiNGZMx2vhY&amp;list=PLol_ykYs3OQ65y4avMdbMk_k96z3lMt6W&amp;index=1">two uncomfortable hours of nothing</a>.</p>
