But even if you're not living in smoggy cities like Los Angeles or New Delhi, there's still plenty of pollution you can't see.&#xa0;Industrial designer&#xa0;Nikolas Bentel&#xa0;has designed a line of shirts called "Aerochromics" that appear light black in clean environments, but show their true colors&#xa0;whenever you&#xa0;enter&#xa0;an area with heavy pollution. There are three shirts in the line, and each one reacts to&#xa0;different types of pollution.&#xa0;<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>One shirt reacts to <a href="http://aerochromics.com/new-products/particle-pollution-shirt-reactive">particulate matter</a>, more commonly known as air pollution. Another reacts to <a href="http://aerochromics.com/new-products/reactive">carbon monoxide</a>. And the <a href="http://aerochromics.com/new-products/radioactivity-shirt-reactive">last shirt</a>, which isn't available for sale&#xa0;yet, reacts to concentrated radioactivity, like a fashionable Geiger&#xa0;counter.&#xa0;The Verge <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2016/7/27/12274072/aerochromics-color-pattern-changing-shirt-air-pollution">reports</a> that the shirt's dyes, which are heat-activated, change color according to two sensors: one in the front and the other in the back. When the sensors pick up&#xa0;a dangerous amount of pollutants around you, the shirt's heat pads activate, causing&#xa0;the&#xa0;temperature-sensitive dyes to change from black to white. When that happens, the&#xa0;shirt's pattern -&#xa0;stripes, dots or squiggles - is revealed.Bentel told the Verge&#xa0;that his shirts are a "monitoring system" of sorts, a "sixth sense" that alerts other people to pollution in the area.The clothing&#xa0;functions similarly to the&#xa0;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentinel_species#Historical_examples">canaries</a>&#xa0;that coal miners once used to sniff out lethal, invisible&#xa0;fumes&#xa0;- though&#xa0;no animals were harmed during the making of these shirts.The&#xa0;Aerochromics line creates enough of a statement piece to start a&#xa0;dialogue - if not about global pollution, then at least about your fashion sense.&#xa0;The carbon monoxide and air pollution reactive shirts retail&#xa0;for $500 <a href="http://aerochromics.com">on Aerochromics</a>. Here is what doctors say you should do in the event of air pollution

If the study at at the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Institute+of+Technology&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian Institute of Technology</a>, Bombay, is to be believed, <keyword id="55910" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Air-Pollution">air pollution</keyword> contributed to a total of 80,665 <keyword id="957086" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="premature-deaths">premature deaths</keyword> of adults over 30 years in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Mumbai&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Mumbai</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Delhi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Delhi</a> in 2015 which is about two-fold from 1995. Also, if we talk about it in economic terms, air pollution cost the two cities $10.66 billion (approximately Rs 70,000 crore) in 2015, or about 0.71% of the country's gross domestic product. 
 According to the study, the impact on <keyword id="1157715" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health-and-productivity">health and productivity</keyword> as a result of exposure to pollution and the consequent burden of respiratory ailments rose with every passing decade. 
 
The impact calculation was done using data on PM 10 (fine particulate matter measuring 10 microns), population and death rates. 
 With its <keyword id="4082476" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="higher-pollution-levels">higher pollution levels</keyword>, Delhi recorded more premature deaths due to ingestion of PM10 from vehicle exhaust, construction dust and other industrial processes. Casualties went up from 19,716 in 1995 to 48,651in 2015. In Mumbai, the comparative figure rose from 19,291 to 32,014 in 20 years. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Air+pollution&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Air pollution</a> was also responsible for 23 million cases of restricted activity days (RAD) — either less productive days or days off work for individuals — in the commercial capital in 2015. The worsening quality of air in the city also led to 64,037 emergency room visits in 2015 by those stricken by respiratory ailments, up by 35.4% from 1995. In comparison, in Delhi, there were 29 million cases of RAD and 0.12 million emergency room visits in 2015. 
 
The study's lead author, Kamal Jyoti Maji, said the impact of air pollution on health and productivity was evident in that the increase in cases and cost after 2005 was in line with the overall trend in pollution.

As per real-time AQI updates, pollution in places near Sukhdev college, Paschim Vihar, ITI (Industrial Training Institute) Jahangirpuri have reached these alarming levels. Other places that fall into the same category are Anand Vihar, PGDAV College and Areas near Major Dhyan Chand stadium. In fact, if India had not been under serious threat of worsening air pollution levels, the average life expectancy of its citizens would have been 1.7 years more. </li></ul>Amid the alarming air pollution levels in India, a recent study on <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2542519618302614?via%3Dihub">Global Burden of Disease Study 2017</a> in the Lancet Planetary Health journal reveals that air pollution has caused more diseases than the ones caused due to tobacco use or smoking, accounting for over 1.24 million deaths in India in 2017. The study said, on Thursday, Delhi witnessed the highest exposure to PM 2.5, tiny particles that are most harmful, followed by Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Major sources of ambient particulate matter pollution in India include burning in thermal power plants, industry emissions, stubble burning and diesel generators. The annual exposure to these tiny particles PM2.5 in India, was 89·9 μg/m3, which was recorded to be the highest in the world. One in every eight deaths in India resulted from air pollution. In fact, if India had not been under serious threat of worsening air pollution levels, the average life expectancy would have been 1.7 years more for its residents, added the study India covers 18% of the global population, which accounts to significantly higher (26%) global premature deaths caused by air pollution, in contrast, it pointed out. Notably, 14 out of 15 most air polluted cities in the world are in India, says a World Health Organisation (WHO) database. It also said that Mexico and Beijing could instruct New Delhi and other Indian cities with ways to combat air pollution as they are aggressively making efforts to counter the situation with cleaner energy options, improved technologies, and promoting the use of public transport. Despite the current situation of increasing air pollution, 77% of India's population spends time outdoors, which is above the National Ambient Air Quality (NAAQ) safe limit. Not just this, 56% of population still used solid fuels in households, in 2017. The study also argued that the reduction in pollution levels has a broader impact than just the well-being of humans, including animal and plant health.
