It reported that the animals representing the party's symbol were brought to the camps set up in the National Assembly (NA)-130 constituency to welcome former prime minister <keyword id="19952788" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="nawaz-sharif" source="keywords">Nawaz Sharif</keyword>. Scores of PML-N supporters took selfies with the lion and tiger locked in iron cages. The wild animals have been brought to multiple PML-N public gatherings in the past. However, PML-N leader Marriyum Aurangzeb said on Nawaz's instruction, a "real lion, brought by one of its supporters for the PML-N rally, has been returned." "Nawaz Sharif has instructed that no real lion or any other animal should be brought to any rally in Pakistan," she said in a tweet. The News International reported that Marriyum also said the PML-N supremo took strict notice of bringing a lion to the rally on Mohini Road and was directed to send the animal back immediately, after which the lion was sent back right away. On Tuesday evening, Nawaz led a public rally in NA-130, from where he will contest general elections slated for February 8. PML-N Chief Organiser Maryam Nawaz also participated in the rally, which will start from Mohini Road and go to Ameer Roor Malik Park from Kale Di Puli. The rally will go from Malik Park to Saradar Chapel Chowk, via Moola Bakhsh Chowk, Ibrahim Road, Santnagar and Isalampura. On Wednesday, Nawaz Sharif asserted that Pakistan faced a crisis following his ouster from the prime minister's office, ARY News reported. In a public gathering at Nankana Sahib, Sharif questioned the rationale behind imprisoning a prime minister who played a pivotal role in making Pakistan a nuclear state. He alleged that five judges removed him from office for not accepting a salary from his son, leading to subsequent economic challenges in the country, as reported by ARY News. Sharif pledged to bring about positive change in Nankana Sahib, outlining plans to transform the city into a model with the establishment of a boy's degree college and a state-of-the-art cricket stadium. Nawaz Sharif supporters bring lion, tiger to a rally in Lahore

Islamabad [<keyword id="3001" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan" source="Orion">Pakistan</keyword>], July 21 (ANI): Pakistan's Information Minister Attaullah Tarar on July 15 announced that the government was seeking to ban the jailed former Prime Minister <keyword id="19914692" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Imran-Khan" source="keywords">Imran Khan</keyword>'s Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party and press <keyword id="21323468" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Treason-charges" source="keywords">treason charges</keyword> against Khan under Article 6 of the country's Constitution. The decision was met with immediate criticism with the PTI quoting Imran Khan as saying that banning of any political party amounts to "murder of democracy." "Our party was already banned, it was not allowed to contest the elections, the chairman, vice chairman and president of the party were already in jail, they still say that the party is banned. It will be done," Khan said. Even the <keyword id="137995" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan-Peoples-Party" source="Orion">Pakistan Peoples Party</keyword> (PPP) did not get on board with the government decision while the other ally PML-Q also questioned the decision. Civil society immediately raised objections, with the Human Rights Council of Pakistan expressing concern over the decision and calling it to be in violation of fundamental rights. Author Zahid Hussain, in his column in Dawn, called it a sign of state desperation. "The decision to ban PTI is yet another sign of the state's desperation. It is a desperate move that may bring down the entire edifice. The plan to ban the most popular political party in the country is the most senseless, self-destructive action the government can take. It is nothing short of hara-kiri. Whether or not the decision is implemented, its very announcement has jolted the foundations of the existing political power structure. The ruling coalition is already in tatters." Zahid Hussain wrote in Dawn. A day later, the government back-tracked partially with Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar telling the media that no final decision had been reached. "We need to consult our leadership and allies in this regard. Any decision to ban PTI will be made in accordance with the law and Constitution," Ishaq Dar was quoted as saying by Dawn. Fearing widespread protests, the government may not hold its threat to ban the PTI but holds steadfast on its decision to challenge the Supreme Court's reserved seats ruling. The development comes after the top court ruled that the PTI was eligible for the allocation of reserved seats for women and minorities. Justice Mansoor Ali Shah of the full bench of the Pakistan Supreme Court announced the 8-5 majority verdict, nullifying the Peshawar High Court's (PHC) order wherein it had upheld the Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) decision denying the reserved seats to the SIC. Following the verdict, the PML-N filed a review petition in the Supreme Court against its verdict. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz openly criticised the court saying judges should allow the country to progress "I would like to ask the SC judges to let the country function. Who are those (people) who do not like the country making progress and re-write the Constitution," Maryam said addressing an event in Lahore. In response, the PTI accused the government and the PML-N of acting like the mafia. "In the case of reserved seats, the Supreme Court did full justice and corrected the Election Commission's misinterpretation of the Supreme Court's decision to take away the bat symbol from the Tehreek-e-Insaf, recognizing the political and parliamentary status of the Tehreek-e-Insaf, but the word law. The Supreme Court judges are being threatened on behalf of the Sicilian Mafia, that is illegally in power," the PTI said. While the PPP has come on board and supported the decision to review the court verdict an editorial in Dawn called it a dangerous step. "The PML-N's confrontational stance and overt refusal to respect court orders on arguably flimsy pretexts is a dangerous sign. The party seems to be throwing a tantrum over being denied a two-thirds majority, which it had only secured due to a series of patently unjust and illegal decisions taken by the ECP. It is unjustified for it to escalate tensions on this matter to the point where they may bring two branches of the state into direct conflict with each other," the column read. The IMF noted that despite a coalition government formed by the alliance of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), the independent candidates backed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) received more votes than other political groups in the general elections held on February 8, according to ARY News report. Expressing concern over the major opposition formed by the PTI-backed members in the National Assembly, the IMF stated in the report that the recently formed government has committed to continuing the standby arrangement policies. However, the complicated political situation, inflation, and social tensions might impact the implementation of the policy reforms in Pakistan. The IMF report warned that the non-implementation of economic policies and a decrease in external financing are likely to put pressure on loans and exchange rates. Furthermore, there could be increased pressure on international banks to approve loans to Pakistan's government if the external financing is delayed, according to ARY News report. The report noted that the practice of extrajudicial killings continued while street crime and the incidence of mob lynchings witnessed a rise. Amid growing political uncertainty in Pakistan, IMF expresses concern over its financial stability

"What have we done to our country?" he questioned. Criticising the ongoing state of Pakistan's economy, Sharif said, "Those who did this to our country are the biggest criminals." While he led his cricket team to victory during the 1992 Cricket World Cup, he failed to bring the same charisma to politics, where he was run out by hell-bent opponents, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N), in his first <keyword id="585867" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Innings" source="Orion">innings</keyword>. <keyword id="6355601" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="khan" source="Orion">Khan</keyword> may not be a villain here, but a victim of history, perhaps. Khan was not the first prime minister to leave before completing his 5-year parliamentary tenure. Not a single one of them could not complete the full <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/4/9/factbox-no-pakistani-prime-minister-has-completed-a-full-tenure">tenure</a>. However, he was the first premier to be forced out of the parliament through a trust vote. He was elected in July on a platform of tackling corruption, fixing the economy for the poor with ample employment opportunities and building a ‘Naya Pakistan’ (new). Let’s go back to the beginning of this end, shall we? A rocketing cost of living in Pakistan, the Pakistani Rupee falling against the US Dollar and a deepening economic crisis contributed to public disgruntlement against Khan. The <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/topic/pakistan">Pakistan</a> government's <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/topic/external-debt">external debt</a> rose by a massive 20% in the first half of the last fiscal (2021-22) reaching a high of PKR21 trillion in December 2021. <div type="image" title="Pakistan&amp;#39;s debt trap" msid="90854314" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Pakistan&amp;#39;s debt trap&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> By borrowing from foreign countries, Khan flouted yet another campaign promise made to his audience. In 2018, he criticised the previous ruling parties for relying on a “<a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/international/world-news/no-country-with-begging-bowl-can-become-great-nation-pakistan-pm/articleshow/84522483.cms">begging</a> bowl’’ and pledging not to resort to external borrowing. Just a year later, Khan struck a deal with the International Monetary Fund. His government broke all previous records by borrowing $16 <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2019/7/26/imran-khans-first-year-in-office-u-turns-and-oppression">billion </a>in just one year, the biggest loan ever since the creation of Pakistan in 1947. The sensitive price index, which includes the prices of essential food items, also recorded a rise of <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/870369af-b673-4ce5-bd86-d89d28be4d40">15.1</a>% in March this year compared to the same time last year. The pressure on Khan reached new heights in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, causing a surge in global oil prices. <div type="image" title="Pakistan&amp;#39;s inflation has been running high since 2019" msid="90854408" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Pakistan&amp;#39;s inflation has been running high since 2019&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Sensing the eroding public support, Khan announced a <a href="https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/southasiasource/experts-react-pakistani-prime-minister-imran-khan-cuts-fuel-and-electricity-prices/">cut </a>in domestic fuel and electricity prices despite a global rise, which later turned out to be the final nail in his coffin. This move added to Pakistan’s chronic fiscal deficit and balance-of-payments troubles, which opened a clear window for Khan’s opposition to call for his resignation later. Khan’s democratic party seemingly wasn’t open to dissent either. Rana Sanaullah, a prominent parliamentarian and vocal critic of Khan’s government, was arrested in 2019 for allegedly trafficking drugs by the military-run anti-narcotics force. Sanaullah had <a href="https://twitter.com/hamidmirpak/status/1145686276886224896?lang=en">predicted </a>his arrest even before there was a warrant against him. Later on July 25, former Prime Minister <keyword id="6576" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nawaz-sharif" source="Orion">Nawaz Sharif</keyword> took to the streets across Pakistan to <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/7/25/pakistan-opposition-holds-black-day-protests-against-pm-khan">protest </a>Khan’s assault on silencing dissenting voices. The account of what went wrong would be incomplete without mentioning the civil-military relationship, which took a turn for the worse after the reshuffle of army chiefs. Khan’s decision to <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-61047736">retain </a>Lieutenant-General Faiz Hameed as the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief, rejecting the nominee of army chief General Qamar Bajwa in October 2021, further weakened the former PM’s political position. He <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-61047736">held </a>off issuing approval to change of posting for nearly three weeks before eventually giving in. Khan is the latest in a long line of Pakistani prime ministers who have fallen out of their position before completing their five-year tenure. "We want to be on the right side of the history. The government faces compulsion; we don't have any compulsion," said opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Khawaja Asif. Asif reminded that Prime Minister <keyword id="14676" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Imran-Khan">Imran Khan</keyword> was quick to accuse former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of making a secret deal with Indian businessman Sajjan Jindal on Jadhav during his meeting with him in <keyword id="1958456" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Murree">Murree</keyword>. "Purely political announcements were made by Imran Khan before coming in power in 2018. He did not realise the consequences of his accusations back then," he said. "In May 2017, Imran had told a political gathering at Ayub Stadium in Quetta that the execution of the convicted Indian spy had been withheld after Jindal visited Pakistan and met Nawaz Sharif," he said adding that Imran Khan had even asked the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) constituted to probe the Sharif family's foreign assets to also trace their business interests in India. On the other hand, the government will be taking the matter up in a cabinet meeting before the ordinance is sent to the National Assembly for approval. Federal Law Minister Dr. Farogh Naseem called on the opposition parties to avoid politics on the matter, insisting that "India will gain if an ordinance in line with the ICJ verdict is not passed". "This issue is highly sensitive and a matter of national importance. Promulgation of the ordinance is neither a National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) nor an appeal," he said. While the government has a compulsion to abide by the ICJ ruling, opposition parties are adamant at not allowing the measure easy transit through the legislature. Opposition parties do not have majority in the lower house but they have a clear majority in the upper house, and warn that if the government succeeds in passing the ordinance in the lower house, they will ensure the upper house rejects it. Pakistan to reconsider Kulbhushan Jadhav Ordinance in the National Assembly on August 3

NEW DELHI: The government is still awaiting confirmation from Pakistan on whether or not Prime Minister <keyword id="6576" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Nawaz-Sharif">Nawaz Sharif</keyword> is going to attend PM-designate Narendra Modi's swearing-in on Monday. Pakistan did hail Modi's initiative as a bold move. 
 Leaders of all other Saarc countries, and also Mauritius PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam, have confirmed their participation apart from Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina who will be in Japan on Monday. Bangladesh will be represented by its <keyword id="202736" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Parliament-speaker">Parliament Speaker</keyword>. The Mauritius PM was invited after a telephonic conversation with Modi.

 "The invitation is a bold and unexpected move. Mr Sharif does not share the anxiety that is felt by some quarters here in Pakistan because he has got some very fond memories of the previous BJP prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee coming to <keyword id="6580" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Lahore">Lahore</keyword> and he hopes that this anxiety about Modi and his past will fade away," Tariq Azim, media advisor to Sharif's party PML (N), told a news channel. 
 
Pakistan's foreign ministry on Thursday said there was also the option of someone else being sent to represent Sharif, leading to speculation that Sharif's party was divided on the issue. Sources here said Sharif may also be influenced by whatever feedback he gets from Pakistan's military establishment. 
 
Sources here said Modi and Sharif, if he does come, will have their first bilateral meeting on May 27. Modi is scheduled to have bilateral meetings with all other visiting leaders the same day. 
 
The Pakistan foreign office spokesperson suggested that Islamabad may consider sending a representative for Sharif. "It is normal practice that if the head of state has a preoccupation then he can nominate someone else. There is no violation of protocol,'' she said.

 The UPA-2 government has been upset with Islamabad in the recent past for not granting non-discriminatory market access to India for furthering trade ties. It alleged that the Sharif government did this under pressure from the <keyword id="15350" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Army">army</keyword>. Indian officials believe that the two countries could start afresh if Sharif indeed attends Modi's oath-taking ceremony.

By inviting Sharif, Modi has also put the onus on the Pakistani PM to kick off the stalled dialogue process. This is especially true in the light of assertions by Pakistani authorities that Islamabad was willing to have a meaningful, result-oriented dialogue with India under Modi but that the initiative to break the logjam had to come from Modi himself.
