The year 2014 is coming to a close. In this year we have witnessed quite a few hits. A handful of these movies created history by getting their name etched in the Rs 100 crore club, but then there were others that went unnoticed. 
 
The coming weekend, we will all be treated to Aamir Khan-staring <keyword id="6396827" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="PK">PK</keyword>. Generally, there is a lot of hype around a movie that stars Aamir Khan and PK is no different. This movie has been directed by Rajkumar Hirani, and jointly produced by Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra. It is the same trio that had delivered a hit like 3 Idiots, and the trade pundits are expecting PK recreate that magic.

There are some news reports <a href="http://www.koimoi.com/box-office/pk-box-office-prediction-will-it-make-50-cr-the-highest-day-total-ever/">which speculates</a> that this movie might get to make Rs 50 crore on the opening Friday. The movie also stars Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput, Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla and Sanjay Dutt. Interestingly, PK will be released in 5,200 screens in India and 600 screens in the overseas. 
 
As there is no holiday on this Friday, we are expecting the movie to remain in the 25-to-35-crore range, and pick steam over the weekend. We will not be surprised if the movie manages to get into the Rs 100 crore club in the first weekend from domestic sales alone. However, collecting a colossal Rs 50 crore during that period looks like a tall feet. 
 
Last year, Aamir Khan's action thriller Dhoom 3, which was released around the same time, managed to collect good money both at home and abroad. The movie <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Dhoom-3-Breaks-All-Bollywood-Movie-RecordsGives-You-Some-Dumb-Entertainment/articleshow/27853596.cms">had garnered</a> Rs 170 crore-plus in the first weekend itself.

Will Aamir Khan’s PK Create New Box Office Records?

This Diwali there were plenty of fireworks at the Indian <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="box-office">Box Office</keyword>. And these fireworks were delivered by none other than the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer <keyword id="43845" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Happy-New-Year">Happy New Year</keyword>. 
 
Happy New Year, which is directed by Farah Khan, also stars Boman Irani, Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah, Abhishek Bachchan and Deepika Padukone 
The movie released on October 24, 2014 and raced on to collect Rs 44.97 crore. The movie managed to earn Rs 100 crore in just 60 hours and has already been crowned the fourth highest grosser of 2014. 
 
However, the movie could not sustain this momentum on Monday and ended up netting Rs 15 crores, which took its overall tally to Rs 123.86 crore. 
 
Nevertheless, we cannot rule out the fact that Happy New Year has the potential to topple the collections of Dhoom 3 (which had recorded Gross collection of Rs 542 crore) and earn the title of Bollywood’s Top earner movie. As of now, Shah Rukh Khan starer Chennai Express is at the second position with total gross earning of Rs 422 crore. 
 Another movie that we feel has the potential to enter the Rs 500 crore club is Aamir Khan-starrer <keyword id="6396827" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="PK">pk</keyword>, which is scheduled for a December release.

Box Office: Happy New Year Gets A Cracker of An Opening

From the title to story, everything about this <keyword id="53697" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="raju-hirani">Raju Hirani</keyword> film has been the talk of the town ever since its first looks have been released. If you too are waiting for the release of year’s much-awaited film, <keyword id="6396827" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="PK">PK</keyword> with a baited breath, here are 10 facts that you must know: 
 
1. Aamir Khan will be seen in not one but nine unique avatars in the film. 
 
2. Aamir’s character in the film chews pan. Being Mr Perfectionist that he is usually known as, Aamir chew paan for every scene. In fact, on some days he ended up chewing more than 100 paans in a day just to get that perfect colour on his lips and the scene right!

 4. You’ll see Aamir talking in Bhojpuri language in considerable part of the film. To get the accent and nuances right, Aamir underwent intense training under the guidance of Bhojpuri TV writer <keyword id="335945" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Shanti-Bhushan">Shanti Bhushan</keyword>, who accompanied the star on shoots. 
 
5. PK was scheduled to release in June’ 14 earlier. But as luck would have it, the release date got postponed. It’s now releasing close to Christmas, which is a lucky time for Aamir, considering his last few hits including Ghajini and 3 Idiots, which released during the same time. 
 
6. Director Rajkumar Hirani wanted Aamir’s character to wear old clothes in the film. Hence, Raju and Aamir came up with the idea of sourcing Aamir's clothes from a different place this time. 
 
For the first time ever, the makers picked up clothes from random people on streets of the places they shot at. For instance, while they shot in Rajasthan, they wanted Aamir to wear the authentic print of Rajasthan. So, the team got down on the streets and requested common men to give interesting shirts that they had worn in return for money or a new shirt. Surprisingly, the strangers were very supportive and happily gave their shirts to the team. 
 
7. Just like his past movies including Munna Bhai MMBS and 3 Idiots, Rajkumar Hirani has conceived a special character for actor Boman Irani even in PK. While many say that Hirani considers Irani as his lucky mascot, the duo prefers to call it friendship. 
 8. Though Hirani is known as a director par excellence, for this special project he donned yet another hat! 8 Facts You Didn’t Know About PK

The New Year started with a bang as far as the Bollywood <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword> is concerned. PK got the cash ringer ringing, and as per the <a href="http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/box-office/special-features/id/421">reports</a>, has managed to get collections to the tunes of Rs 632 crore (worldwide). We were expecting the same effect to continue as we stepped into 2015 with the release of <keyword id="1969424" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tevar">Tevar</keyword>. 
 
In 2014, we saw action-romance movies did pretty well and Tevar too fitted in this category. On top of it, the movie has a fresh pairing of Sonakshi Sinha and Arjun Kapoor. The rumours of their off screen relationship were expected to help the movie to get off to a good start. 
Unfortunately, Tevar was off to a lofty start. The movie just managed to collect Rs 7.05 crore. Things did not change much over the weekend and the total ticket collections for the opening weekend of Tevar were <a href="http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/moviemicro/boxoffice/id/718510">recorded</a> at Rs 22.05 crore. 
 
The movie is directed by Amit Sharma and has been made in a budget of Rs 45 crore. As per <a href="http://www.koimoi.com/box-office/tevar-1st-monday-box-office-collections/">Koimoi.com</a>, Tevar has managed to collect Rs 29.25 crore till Wednesday (January 14, 2015). 
 
We just hope that the things are not the same for the movies releasing in the coming week. There will be four movies trying their luck on January 16, which include Alone, Crazy Cukkad Family, Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene and MSG: Messenger of God. 
 
With the movie Alone, television heartthrob Karan Singh Grover will be making his debut in Bollywood. Starring opposite him in this movie is Bipasha Basu. It is a horror movie, which is directed by Bhushan Patel. Patel has been accredited with movies such as 1920: Evil Returns and Ragini MMS 2. 
There have been speculations about Karan Singh Grover and Bipasha Basu being the next “it” couple, but from the promos we don’t see any sizzling chemistry between the two. In addition, there seems to be nothing new that we think that the movie will offer to the audience. 
Coming over to the other release of this Friday, MSG: Messenger of God, which is the story of Ram Rahim Singh. There are already plenty of controversies around this movie but if all goes well, then the movie is likely to get a good opening at the box office.

And this is not happening for the first time when religious overtones of a film have created celluloid controversy. Mohalla Assi 
 
 
 Directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, this Sunny Deol-starrer movie is in news due to its abusive language and portrayal of Lord <keyword id="33379" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shiva">Shiva</keyword> in poor light. Following a petition, a court has recently restrained the makers of the film from releasing on July 3 till further orders. The court has observed that it might “hurt religious sentiments of the people” and said it should not hit theatres till the alleged offensive scenes and dialogues are edited. The film is based in the locality of Assi Ghat in the holy city of Varanasi. It is, reportedly, based on 2004 Hindi novel 'Kashi Ka Assi' written by Kashinath Singh. The movie also stars Ravi Kishan, Sakshi Tanwar in lead roles.

Hindutva groups took offence to certain scenes and dialogues while others criticized ‘PK’ that it “unnecessarily” mocked Hindu beliefs and rituals. Police lodged complaints against the film under Sections 153-A, 295-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, it did not affect the box office collection of ‘PK’, which has crossed Rs 650 crore mark. The original name of the movie was ‘Ram-Leela’, but was changed to ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, following a petition. According to the petitioner, actor <keyword id="106133" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ranveer-Singh">Ranveer Singh</keyword>, who played the role of Ram in the film, was a womanizer and his role was a character assassination of Lord <keyword id="52950" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rama">Rama</keyword>. A case was later filed against Bhansali, Ranveer Singh and <keyword id="598" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Deepika-Padukone">Deepika Padukone</keyword> for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of the people and promoting communal disharmony. However, the film was released on November 15, 2013 and collected over Rs 200 crore on the box office. 
 
Son of Sardaar 
 
 
 Directed by Ashwni Dhir, the film was tagged as objectionable by the Sikh community due to a Lord Shiva tattoo on actor <keyword id="4230" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ajay-Devgan">Ajay Devgan</keyword>’s chest and a couple of allegedly outrageous dialogues. He played the role of a Sikh protagonist in the movie. Being a producer, he assured the <keyword id="54270" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shiromani-Gurdwara-Parbandhak-Committee">Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee</keyword> (SGPC) that the objectionable elements would be removed before its release. The actor also promised that a print of the film would be sent to the SGPC before the release. The movie was released on November 13, 2012 and also stars <keyword id="62210" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sonakshi-Sinha">Sonakshi Sinha</keyword>, <keyword id="6371319" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Juhi-Chawla">Juhi Chawla</keyword> and Sanjay Dutt. 
 
OMG-Oh My God 
 
 This Akshay Kumar-starrer was a mix of satire, fable and fantasy that brings audience’s attention towards the commercialisation of religion. Although the movie insists on the existence of God, it was not like by Hindutva groups. The story was an adaptation of a successful Gujarati play, which also became a hit in Hindi and Marathi languages. Directed by Umesh Shukla, the movie was released on September 28, 2012. An FIR was later lodged against the director, producers and actors of the film for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of the people. The movie also stars actors <keyword id="6357914" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Paresh-Rawal">Paresh Rawal</keyword> and <keyword id="14672" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mithun-Chakraborty">Mithun Chakraborty</keyword>.

<keyword id="6354633" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajkumar-Hirani">Rajkumar Hirani</keyword>’s recently released film <keyword id="6396827" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="PK">PK</keyword>, starring <keyword id="6355923" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aamir-Khan">Aamir Khan</keyword> and Anushka Sharma, is ringing all the bells at box office—after all, the movie has collected more than Rs 92 crores in the first three days of its release. 
 
The movie revolves around an alien who visits the planet earth only to be bewildered by the way people here function in the name of religion and God. Those who have watched Akshay Kumar’s OMG – Oh My God!—will surely relate with the way Aamir’s character puts a question mark on how we blindly follow anything in the name of God and religion. 
 
However, given the fact that the plot involves a Godman from a specific religion has not gone too well with some of the audiences, resulting in the Twitter trend #BoycottPK. The tweets come from the followers of that particular religion, asking why the makers targeted one religion and not many others that have been wronging the society. 
 
Well, boycotting a particular film for one reason or the other is very common in India. However, PK has set a new record here as well. While on one hand, the hashtag #BoycottPK is trending, the liberal audience is also trying hard to trend the hashtag #WeSupportPK, which by the way has become the number one trend in India. 
 
This fight between these two opposite hashtags surely makes for an interesting watch. As far as we think, the film has been released and is doing well, regardless of the viewers’ notions.

A viral rumor after the Lion Air crash claims the airline already had the worst possible safety rating - but it isn't true

After a dry spell of 5 months, 2015 seems to be shaping up to be a great year for <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword>. With content-driven movies like Margarita With A Straw and Piku making their mark, Tanu Weds Manu Returns has become the first women-centric movie to rake in 100 crores at the box office. 
 
Things are looking good for the rest of the year as well; given that there are many movies lined up which would be a treat to watch for cinephiles.

Directed by Bejoy Nambiar, the movie has been produced by Rajkumar Hirani Films and Vinod Chopra Films. 
 
In the teaser, we see gunshots, chases and deaths, with glimpses of Aditi Rao Hydari, Neil Nitin Mukesh and John Abraham, the roles of whom were kept under wraps until now. The movie looks like an intriguing tale of love and religion, with patriotism and loyalty, with the mind game chess being an important part of the movie.
