New Delhi: The upcoming Initial Public Offering (IPO) of <keyword id="20214518" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai-Motors-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Hyundai Motors India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Hyundai Motors India">Hyundai Motors India</keyword> has sparked significant interest in the Indian markets, but a recent report by <keyword id="20303939" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aequitas-Investments" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Aequitas Investments" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Aequitas Investments">Aequitas Investments</keyword> suggests it may not be as promising for <keyword id="19953411" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-investors" source="keywords">Indian investors</keyword> as anticipated. The report highlighted several concerns, pointing to broader industry challenges and the valuation mismatch as reasons for caution. It said "Given the headwinds that the Global <keyword id="20081560" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="automobile-industry" source="keywords">Automobile Industry</keyword> is facing coupled with signs of a slowdown in India, the upcoming IPO might not be a great deal for Indian Investors" Hyundai Motor Company, the parent firm based in South Korea, is set to offload shares worth Rs 25,000 crore through an Offer for Sale (OFS) in the Indian market. However, the report suggested that the current global headwinds facing the automobile industry, combined with signs of a slowdown in India, may make this IPO less attractive for Indian investors. One of the key issues flagged in the report is the valuation of Hyundai Motors India. The report noted that despite contributing only 6.5 per cent of Hyundai's global revenue and 8 per cent of its overall profitability, the Indian unit is expected to be valued at approximately 42 per cent of the parent company's market capitalization upon listing. This valuation discrepancy raises concerns about whether the IPO price is justified given the Indian unit's relatively modest contribution to Hyundai's global business. "Despite contributing only 6.5 per cent of the global revenues and 8 per cent of the profitability, Hyundai's India unit will be valued at approx. 42 per cent of the Parent Co.'s MCap on listing" the report added. From Hyundai's perspective, the move makes sense. In South Korea, Hyundai's stock currently trades at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of just 5x, making the sale in India potentially more lucrative. The report argues that Hyundai is looking to take advantage of the relatively higher valuations in India. It said "From Hyundai's perspective it's a no-brainer as their stock in S.Korea trades at a measly 5x P/E" Hyundai Motor Group, which includes both Hyundai and Kia, is the third-largest automaker globally, having sold 7.3 million vehicles in 2023. While Hyundai Motors India does not have a stake in Kia Motors India, the parent company owns a controlling 34 per cent stake in Kia Motors globally and fully owns Genesis Motors, a luxury brand in South Korea.

Let's break it all down.Why is everyone doubting this Qualcomm-Intel deal? The big hangup is that Intel designs and manufactures chips. No one is quite sure how the latter half of the business fits into Qualcomm, which only designs chips.Wait, isn't it a good thing Intel can do both? It used to be, but not anymore. Nowadays, chip companies <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-qualcomm-odd-couple-wont-solve-us-chipmaking-woes-2024-9">typically focus on one or the other</a>. Some companies design chips (Nvidia). Only a few manufacture them (TSMC mostly). If anything, doing both has actually hurt, not helped, Intel in recent years. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-struggles-qualcomm-deal-chip-industry-turmoil-2024-9">Along with some other bad strategic decisions</a>.I'm still confused. TSMC's pure manufacturing focus has helped it get very good at what is an incredibly complex process. It works with a bunch of different players, while Intel only really manufactures its own chip designs. Getting all that varied experience has proved particularly beneficial for TSMC in the age of cutting-edge mobile and AI chips. It's so good now that even Intel has TSMC make a few of its designs — the ultimate victory.So Intel is mid at manufacturing chips? Sighs Sure. It used to be the best, now it's probably third.If that's the case, why can't Qualcomm just ditch the factories as part of the deal? That is indeed the likely plan. The US needs Intel to keep (and get better at) manufacturing chips. Having the world's most dominant chip manufacturer, TSMC, be based in Taiwan isn't great. If China decides to invade the island, our chip supply is in major trouble.Why is Qualcomm even reportedly considering buying Intel? Intel is still very good at designing chips for PCs and servers, the computers that go in data centers. These businesses would complement Qualcomm's existing offerings well. Qualcomm would probably then sell Intel's manufacturing operations to another buyer. The problem with that is that this manufacturing business would have almost no customers, and would fall even further behind TSMC.Does Intel have any other options? Intel's manufacturing capabilities might be a hangup to this deal, but they're why so many people want to see the company survive and thrive. After news of the Qualcomm talks broke, a report followed about PE giant Apollo's interest in investing up to $5 billion in Intel.So how does this all end? Experts seem incredibly skeptical about a Qualcomm deal going through. But this entire episode highlights important questions about the US' chip-manufacturing abilities, or lack thereof. Investments by <keyword id="34499" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="private-equity" source="Orion">private equity</keyword> (PE) and <keyword id="6357097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="venture-capital" source="Orion">venture capital</keyword> (VC) funds to homegrown companies declined to $27.9 billion across 697 transactions this year (as of December 20), compared to $47.62 billion across 1,364 deals in 2022, according to a new report. 2023 saw more money being pulled out from the country by private equity players, with overall exits reaching $19.34 billion from 248 companies, in comparison to 233 exits worth $18.45 billion in 2022, according to data from Venture Intelligence and industry body IVCA. Meanwhile, venture <keyword id="989750" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capital-funding" source="Orion">capital funding</keyword> for <keyword id="6362513" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups" source="Orion">startups</keyword> declined by 72 per cent this year compared to last year. The new-age companies in the country received $7.5 billion across all stages (as of December 15), compared with $25 billion last year, according to the data. The fall in <keyword id="6357455" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="funding" source="Orion">funding</keyword> this year is chiefly attributed to slow late-stage deals (Series D and above), which more than halved to $3.5 billion from $11.70 billion in 2022. The early-stage funding deals slowed down. The number of deals declined to almost half to 414 rounds from 871 rounds in the year-ago period, according to the report. Growth-stage funding rounds dropped to $1.9 billion via 99 deals, compared with $6.84 billion from 230 deals in 2022. Making a dent in India's startup growth story, the country slipped to fourth position in the global ranking among the highest-funded geographies in 2023, as it recorded lowest funding in five years. After grabbing the third spot globally in 2021 as well as in 2022, India ranked fourth behind the US, the UK and China this year, receiving only $7 billion in total funding (till December 5), according to recent data by global market intelligence platform Tracxn. In the third quarter (Q3) this year, India even slipped to fifth position among the highest-funded countries -- behind the US, the UK, China and France.

It is the million (or perhaps billion) dollar question. However, those hoping for a dealmaking free-for-all might be a bit disappointed, according to one PE executive. Joseph Bae, the co-CEO of KKR, outlined areas the firm will be interested in and places it's steering clear of while speaking at Goldman Sachs US Financial Services Conference in New York, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kkr-private-equity-investment-strategy-digital-2022-12">Insider's Rebecca Ungarino reports</a>. High on Bae's wishlist are "all things digital," he said, with one giant caveat: profitability. Companies with high valuations that have yet to turn a profit are a no go, Bae said.
