<strong><br /></strong><ul><li><strong><keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> successfully tested its <keyword id="2216617" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prithvi-Defence-Vehicle">Prithvi Defence Vehicle</keyword> (<keyword id="4163592" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="PDV">PDV</keyword>) last night which is a part of its two-layer Ballistic Missile Defence Program (BMD).</strong></li><li><strong>PDV, in particular, is a missle that engages targets 50 kms above the Earth’s atmosphere.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>Earlier reports suggest that the PDV could potentially replace the existing combination of missiles.</strong></li></ul>Tensions are at a precarious point where China, Russia, the United States, Japan and, of course, India are in an arms race to beef up their economic and military arsenals. India’s newest milestone is a <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/india-tests-interceptor-missile-that-can-engage-targets-above-atmosphere-1920981">successful test</a> of the the Prithvi Defence Vehicle (PDV) off the eastern coast of the country. This is a part of India's two-layer Ballistic Missile Defence Program (BMD).<br /><br />Originally <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/latest-headlines/story/drdo-readies-shield-against-chinese-icbms-41421-2009-03-09">announced</a> in 2009 as a defence requirement against China’s intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), the PDV engages targets in the Earth’s exo-atmosphere. Targets are usually at an altitude that’s nearly 50 km above the Earth’s atmosphere.<br /><br />India conducted its test at around 8PM on 23 September from <keyword id="3038338" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Abdul-Kalam-Island">Abdul Kalam Island</keyword> off the coast of the Odisha, a state on the eastern border of India.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="Mahogany Photo Simple Flowcharts(2)" msid="65933731" hostid="261"></div>

<br /><strong>India’s Ballistic Missile Defence Program<br /></strong><br />The PDV and Prithvi Air Defence (PAD) work together to destroy missiles at exo-atmospheric altitudes, and the Ashivin Advanced Defence (AAD) is in place to intercept missiles within the atmosphere at heights of 20-40kms. <br /><br />So, the BMD system, as of now, can allegedly target medium range ballistic missiles that are travelling between the speeds of Mach 3 and Mach 8. <br /><br />When the PDV was originally tested in 2014, it missed its target though the launch was still considered a success by the DRDO scientists at that time. During the second test in 2017, reports claimed that the target was destroyed at 100kms. <br /><br />That being said, India is also <a href="https://thediplomat.com/2016/10/india-and-russia-ink-s-400-missile-air-defense-system-deal/">speculated</a> to have signed a deal for Russian-made S-400 Triumf advanced air defense systems, or SA-21 Growlers. The reports also suggest that the S-400’s in combination with the 40N6 <keyword id="839167" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="surface-to-air-missile">surface-to-air missile</keyword>, will be superior to what the PDV can accomplish.<br /><br />In a nuclear arms’ competition, BDM systems play a pivotal role in rendering the opposition obsolete. And, while we understand how the missile works, its true test would be in actual combat conditions. <br /><br />India’s BDM system puts it in an exclusive group with the United States, Russia, France, Israel and China. These are the only countries in the world with a developed missile defence system. <br />

But as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/afp-warming-opens-famed-northwest-passage-to-navigation-2015-12">pathways through polar waterways opened</a>, disease-carrying animals transported it to the Pacific.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>As rising temperatures cause Arctic ice to melt, a deadly virus may have taken advantage of the change and hopped from from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific.</p><p>Phocine distemper virus (PDV) is essentially the seal version of measles (dogs, similarly, can get the canine distemper virus). The virus' range appeared to be limited to the Atlantic Ocean until 2004, when an outbreak occurred amid northern sea otters in the Alaskan Pacific.</p><p>That left scientists baffled as to how the once-isolated disease made its way across the world.</p><p><a href="https://nature.com/articles/s41598-019-51699-4">A study</a> published today in the journal Scientific Reports offers an answer: Over the past 15 years, the authors found, melting ice opened up previously clogged pathways through the Arctic Circle. That enabled PDV-carrying animals to transport the virus more regularly between the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans.</p><p>"We went back and looked at what ice was doing, and the biggest opening in sea ice to date had occurred in 2002," Tracey Goldstein, the senior author of the study, told Business Insider. "It was a perfect-storm combination: In August and September of 2002 there was a bad outbreak in north Atlantic harbor seals. And September was also when ice extent was lowest, which led to the spread."</p><h2>PDV outbreaks coincided with reductions in Arctic sea ice</h2><p>Every September, Arctic sea ice hits its minimum extent. Since the 1980s, that minimum has decreased by about 13% per decade, and the decline is accelerating because the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>NASA via Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">The 2015 Arctic sea ice minimum is 699,000 square miles less than the 1981-2010 average. By last month, the extent had dropped to 1.7 million square miles (4.3 million square kilometers). <a href="https://www.climatechangenews.com/2019/09/18/window-save-arctic-sea-ice-rapidly-closing/">Researchers at the European Space Agency</a> have warned that we could see <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ice-911-tiny-glass-beads-to-stop-arctic-ice-melt-2019-10">an ice-free Arctic</a> in just decades.</p><p>Less sea ice means more open ocean pathways criss-crossing the Arctic. Ships take advantage of these routes to cut travel time; Canada's Northwest Passage is one example of such a pathway.</p><p>Marine mammals, it seems, also use these channels to bop between oceans.</p><p>To investigate PDV outbreaks, the researchers behind the new study examined blood and genetic data samples collected from 2,530 live and 165 dead mammals - including seals, sea lions, and sea otters - between 2001 and 2016.</p><p>The results suggested that the first Pacific Ocean outbreak of PDV occurred in sea otters near Alaska's Aleutian Islands in 2003 and 2004, with over 30% of those animals testing positive for the virus at the time. An analysis of satellite imagery from those time periods revealed that in the years preceding the two outbreaks - 2002 and 2008 - open water routes were visible between the north Atlantic and Pacific oceans.</p><p>The authors think the reductions in the Arctic sea ice extent likely facilitated contact between species that had previously been kept separate. As mammals interacted in new ways, the PDV virus spread.</p><h2>PDV outbreaks have killed tens of thousands of seals</h2><p>Goldstein's team thinks the virus-carrying animals could have moved from the Atlantic to the Pacific in two ways: either by hugging the northern Russian coast and heading east, or swimming west along the coast and islands of northern Canada.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>NOAA Fisheries, Polar Ecosystems Program</span></p><p class="caption">Steller sea lions rest on ice.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>PDV spreads via respiratory fluids when animals are in close contact on land or in the ocean. Many species of seals and otters are susceptible, though to varying degrees. Harbor seals are by far the most vulnerable: a 1988 epidemic in the Atlantic killed 23,000 seals, while more than 30,000 perished during the 2002 outbreak.</p><p>Afflicted animals get fevers and lung infections, according to <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4276944/">a December 2014 study</a>. Mucus drips from their eyes and nostrils, and they're prone to seizures that can prevent them from diving or swimming.</p><p>"They get sick very quickly," Goldstein said. "The virus could kill a harbor seal within one to two weeks."</p><p>Just last year, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/07/science/dead-seals-new-england.html">up to 1,000 harbor and gray seals</a> died on the New England coast from the disease.</p><p>Other seal species are less affected by the virus; some can carry PDV without getting sick, and pass it along to other animals. Harp seals in the Atlantic may have been the original source of PDV, the study authors wrote. Then other species like ringed and bearded seals may have picked it up and transported it to the Pacific, where species like Steller sea lions, northern fur seals, and northern sea otters got infected.</p><p>"I didn't expect to find this many PDV-positive animals in so many species," Goldstein said.
