The newspaper's staff said in a <a target="_blank" href="https://eugeneweekly.com/2023/12/28/wheres-the-damn-paper/">statement</a> on its website on December 28 titled "Where's the Damn Paper?" that it had recently learned "someone we once trusted" embezzled "thousands upon thousands" of funds that belonged to the Weekly, which prints about 30,000 free copies each week.The paper learned that vendors it works with hadn't been paid in months. It had to lay off its entire 10-person staff three days before Christmas, the statement said, and its printer will publish the paper again only if they pay for it upfront. "EW employees who thought they were paying into retirement accounts have learned the money never arrived at its destination," staff members James Bateman, Todd Cooper, Camilla Mortensen, and Rob Weiss wrote.They reported the theft to the local police, and a team of private forensic accountants is examining the paper's books, according to the statement. <h2>'Finances in shambles'</h2>"The theft of EW's funds remained hidden for years and has left our finances in shambles," they said. A spokesperson for the Eugene Police Department told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.oregonlive.com/business/2023/12/eugene-weekly-forced-to-lay-off-entire-staff-stop-printing-after-alleged-embezzlement.html">OregonLive</a> that the Weekly filed a theft report on December 19 and declined to disclose details due to the active investigation."We are amazed and encouraged by the support we are getting from the community and across the country," Mortensen told Business Insider on Monday. "The loss of a community weekly paper is a pretty big hit not only to the small staff but to folks who love local independent journalism."She said the paper discovered that it was a former employee who was "heavily involved" with the Weekly's finances had used the paper's bank account to pay themselves $90,000 since at least 2022, <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/eugene-weekly-oregon-embezzled-newspaper-40cbf6317089b2772450dff050cc704b">the Associated Press reported</a> on Sunday. "It's kind of like a new Apple product." Now, he doesn't know when the next shipment will come in since the business's wholesale suppliers have run out. In the meantime, he's been trying to help people make their own by displaying the key ingredient in hand-sanitizer, rubbing alcohol, in the front of the store along with a simple recipe. "It's nothing fancy," said Solman, who also makes his own shaving oil and has helped parents make their own EpiPens when there was a shortage of the life-saving medical devices.But the recipe, which indicated people should use four parts aloe vera to one part isopropyl alcohol, wasn't right, since <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-how-to-make-hand-sanitizer-and-cleaning-wipes-2020-3">hand sanitizer has to be</a> at least 60% alcohol in order to effectively kill bacteria, according to the CDC.A concoction that's less than one-fifth alcohol wouldn't do the trick. <h2></h2>When Insider alerted the pharmacy to the error, Solman said he'd copied it from the internet and changed the sign. But the proportions - now three parts aloe to two parts alcohol - remain incorrect, since the resulting solution would still be less than 40% alcohol. <h2></h2><h2>Hand sanitizer is easy to make at home </h2>Hudson Square Pharmacy sell both 70% and 99% alcohol, and either would be fine on their own or with small amounts of aloe vera, which some people to make the sanitizer gentler on the skin. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Leon Neal/Getty ImagesTwitter's newest ad experiment takes place off its own platform.</div></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>Twitter is starting to place ads within tweets on publishers' websites, starting with a group of titles including The Street.</li><li>The move hints at Twitter's plan to make revenue from programmatic <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> that uses automated software to place ads on publishers' sites.</li><li>Twitter is testing the technology with local news publishers and blogs that commonly plug streams of tweets into their websites apps.</li></ul>Twitter has a plan to make more money outside of Twitter - while also helping publishers squeeze out a bit more revenue.After setting up a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-has-a-new-plan-to-help-challenge-facebook-and-google-2018-5">cryptic landing page in May</a> for a program dubbed Twitter Timeline Ads that pitched publishers on a new way to make money, the program is now live with some outlets.The new program places ads into Timelines - or strings of tweets - that these publishers embed into their websites.The Street is one publisher employing the new program. For example, on the right-hand side of its site a section pulls in a real-time feed of anchor <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jim-cramer-breaks-down-his-daily-schedule-2015-12">Jim Cramer's tweets. </a>On Tuesday, display ads for Discover popped up between tweets and linked to the brand's website. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">The StreetAds are appearing in Twitter embeds.</div></div></div>Twitter said that the Timeline Ads program includes large, medium, and small publishers. However, a few years ago such custom Twitter Timelines could be found on lots of websites. But now they seem to be less common as many web publishers have de-emphasized <a href="http://www.niemanlab.org/2015/03/a-wave-of-distributed-content-is-coming-will-publishers-sink-or-swim/">on their websites</a> to focus on distribution across social platforms.That said, the tactic is still common with local news and mid-size publishers. Advance Local - which owns AL.com, Syracuse.com, and The Oregonian/OregonLive.com - is also participating in Twitter's beta program.<h2>Twitter has a shot at becoming a bigger programmatic ad player</h2>Programmatic advertising is a massive market for both Facebook and Google but Twitter has been slower to move into automated ad buying outside of its own site and app. Twitter did purchase the ad tech firm <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-acquires-mobile-ad-network-mopub-for-350-million-will-an-ad-exchange-come-next-2013-9">MoPub for $350 million</a> in 2013, but that business is primarily focused on helping mobile app publishers manage their ad inventory - and less on desktop ads.With the new initiative, Twitter says the top 20 tweets in a Timeline are eligible for ads. Ads will be slotted between the first and second tweets, the 7th and 8th tweets, the 13th and 14th tweets and between the 19th and 20th tweets.The ad revenue will equally split between Twitter and publishers, as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-reveals-new-info-how-publishers-can-make-money-displaying-timeline-tweets-ads-2018-8">Business Insider has previously reported.</a>Twitter's test is leaning on ad-tech companies to serve display ads within Timelines but it's not hard to imagine that Twitter may start serving Promoted Tweets in Timelines. That could open up new ad inventory that Twitter can pitch to advertisers as reach outside of its own apps and site.In the case of the ad that appeared on The Street's website, it was served by RocketFuel, according to the AdChoice logo in the corner of the ad, which details the ad-tech companies that serve consumers ads. As of August, OpenX was another "authorized partner," according to previous copy that appeared on Twitter's website."We are continuing to evolve and iterate the ways in which we can work with publishers to help them generate revenue through unique real-time content monetization opportunities, on and off platform," said a Twitter spokesperson. "We are running an alpha test to explore new channels of demand with OpenX, and are looking forward to seeing how this evolves."<h2>Twitter wants to stay away from spammy display ads</h2>To participate in the ad program, publishers are encouraged to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-backed-adstxt-initiative-to-clean-up-digital-advertising-still-hasnt-caught-on-2017-12">set up ads.txt,</a> the digital advertising industry's initiative backed by the IAB Tech Lab to prevent un-authorized tech vendors from selling ads on publishers' sites. In doing so, publishers theoretically keep ad fraud out of their inventory and only work with a limited number of ad-tech partners.While Twitter has mulled <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-considering-paid-version-of-tweetdeck-2017-3">a subscription version of Tweetdeck,</a> the bulk of its revenue comes from ads sold on its platform. <div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image">AP Photo/Kin Cheung</div></div>In 1971, Phil Knight - <a href="http://www.forbes.com/profile/phil-knight/" target="_blank">who now has an estimated net worth of $19 billion</a> - was teaching accounting at Portland State University.
The assistant professor had a side business called Blue Ribbon Sports.
It was an athletics company founded with the intent of taking on Adidas and Puma, then the biggest players in the shoe game. 
Knight's first play was to distribute Japanese sneakers, but that deal fell apart due to manufacturing concerns.
So the Oregon native decided to start making his own shoes. His company, now known as Nike, didn't have a name at the time. It also needed a logo.
Knight found his designer on campus: Carolyn Davidson, a graphics design student at Portland State. 
<a href="http://www.oregonlive.com/business/index.ssf/2011/06/nikes_swoosh_brand_logo_hits_4.html" target="_blank">According to OregonLive.com</a>, Knight overheard Davidson talk about how she couldn't afford to take a painting class, so he approached her with a pitch, asking if she'd like to do some freelance design work for the young company. 
The agreed-upon rate: $35.
OregonLive.com <a href="http://www.oregonlive.com/business/index.ssf/2011/06/nikes_swoosh_brand_logo_hits_4.html" target="_blank">has the design narrative</a>:
Keenly aware of the difficulty of making something static appear fluid, she went to work. "I remember being in my studio working on it," she said. "I drew a picture of a shoe and then I drew (logos) on tissue. I'd lay it over. And then I'd -" Davidson makes a motion as if she were crumpling paper. "Because it has to look good on a shoe."
She kept doodling, and two or three weeks later - again, there are no records of the date - Davidson presented her work at the Blue Ribbon offices.
She presented a handful of designs to Knight and his business partners. They didn't adore any of them, but one curvy check mark seemed better than the others. 
"Well, I don't love it," Knight said, "but maybe it will grow on me."
By June 18, 1971, the logo was registered with the U.S. Patent Office.
To Knight's credit, although he bought Nike's now-iconic logo for just $35, he was more generous later on. In 1983, as the company boomed, Knight and his cofounders threw a party for Davidson. They gave her a gold ring with a swoosh on it, plus 500 shares of Nike stock. Today, those 500 shares <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2004273/Woman-designed-Nike-swoosh-explains-story-inception-40-years-ago.html" target="_blank">are worth $643,000</a>.
Davidson graduated from Portland State in 1971, and she worked with Nike until 1975, when she decided to go freelance.
Nike, of course, is now gigantic, <a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/most-innovative-companies/2013/nike" target="_blank">with </a><a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/most-innovative-companies/2013/nike" target="_blank">44,000 employees worldwide and $24 billion in annual revenue</a>. 
And Davidson is satisfied with the Swoosh's ubiquity. "I like it," she says. "I really do. I never get tired of looking at it."

But this year, some of these supposedly easy wins didn't go as planned.
The biggest loss of the weekend may have been by Oregon State, who paid Eastern Washington $450,000 to make the 400 mile trip to Corvallis, Oregon. The Beavers were ranked 25th in the polls and were playing their first game with their new logo and uniforms.
Oregon State lost the game, 49-46.
In all, there were six FCS (formerly division I-AA) schools that upset FBS schools and were paid at least $275,000 for the privilege. These six schools were paid a combined $2.15 million:

<li>Northern Iowa beat Iowa State 28-20. Iowa State paid UNI $350,000 (<a href="http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20130830/SPORTS020602/130830007/Randy-Peterson-UNI-Iowa-State-football-series-must-continue">via DesMoinesRegister.com</a>).</li>

Six Tiny FCS Teams Got Paid $2.15 Million To Beat Some Huge College Football Schools This Weekend

<table class="image-container float_right" width="200"><tr><td><div class="image"></div><a href="AP">AP</a></td></tr></table>After <keyword id="1777537" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chip-Kelly">Chip Kelly</keyword> flirted with the <keyword id="103436" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="NFL">NFL</keyword> for the second straight off-season, <a href="http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/john_canzano/index.ssf/2013/01/canzano_chip_kellys_nfl_dance.html">John Canzano of OregonLive.com speculates</a> that Kelly's dream job is as head coach of the New England Patriots.
Kelly is a native of New Hampshire and was an assistant coach at the University of New Hampshire for a number of years. But as Canzano correctly points out, there is little reason to believe Bill Belichick will vacate that position in the near future.
Rather, there are two other jobs in the NFL that Kelly may have his eyes on. Both jobs could open up after next season. And both jobs come with an athletic quarterback that could run Kelly's fast-paced offense.
<keyword id="365892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Washington-Redskins">WASHINGTON REDSKINS</keyword> — Mike Shanahan just completed his third season as the Redskins head coach. But Shanahan will be 61 in 2013. And after losing in the first round of this year's playoffs, Shanahan has just one playoff win in the last 14 years. <a href="http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2012-12-31/sports/36103782_1_redskins-park-redskins-officials-washington-redskins">There was a report recently</a> that the Redskins were considering an extension for Shanahan. But that was before what many believe was poor handling of Robert Griffin III's knee injury. If Shanahan does not get an extension this off-season, the Redskins will have to make a decision on his future next winter heading into the final year on his contract.
<keyword id="1440417" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Carolina-Panthers">CAROLINA PANTHERS</keyword> — The Panthers recently decided that <a href="http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/8815657/carolina-panthers-keeping-ron-rivera-third-year">Ron Rivera will return in 2013</a>, his third season as head coach of the Panthers. But after back-to-back losing seasons with Cam Newton at quarterback, if the Panthers miss the playoffs next season, Carolina will likely be looking for a new coach. And a Kelly-Newton partnership could be bad news for the rest of the NFL.
