Debt ridden <keyword id="116682" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Orchid-Chemicals">Orchid Chemicals</keyword> has posted a profit of nearly Rs 272 crore in the quarter ending September 30, 2014 as compared to a loss of Rs 200.34 crore in the corresponding period in 2013. 
	 However, the company has registered a decline in its <keyword id="6398283" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Revenues">revenues</keyword> by Rs 205.48 crore, from Rs 308.47 crore in September 30, 2013 to Rs 174.99 crore in the corresponding period in 2014. 
	 
	“The company has given advances amounting to Rs 596.27 crore to various parties and is outstanding as on September 30, 2014. The company has not received major materials or capital goods from the time these specific advances were given… the company is not able to take delivery due to financial constraints. We are not able to express any opinion on the recoverability of this amount,” the auditors said in their Limited Review report. 
	 
	According to them, “The company has an investments of Rs 94.82 crore and loans of Rs 34.25 crore in a wholly owned subsidiary Bexel Pharmaceutical Inc. The subsidiary has not been spending any money on the research on the molecule during the current period as no financial support is being given by the parent company… In view of the above, it is necessary to impair the value of investment as no information is available with the Company regarding the value that can be recovered from the sale of rights over the molecule possessed by the subsidiary.” 
	 Orchid Chemicals has received an approval for Corporate Debt Restructuring (<keyword id="6354793" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="CDR">CDR</keyword>) package in March 2014. However, the company still has not received final confirmation of balances from some banks and institutions pertaining to the loans and interest funded. Nevertheless, the company has successfully the transfer of business to the global pharmaceutical giant <keyword id="84942" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hospira">Hospira</keyword> in July 2014. 
	 
	“With the implementation of the approved CDR package and the completion of business transfer to Hospira, the operations are getting streamlined with the infusion of working capital into the system. We are confident of the rebuilding process and hope to generate value to the stakeholders in the ensuing quarters,” said K Raghavendra Rao, managing director of Orchid Pharmaceuticals. 
	 
	It should be noted that the company has been reeling under a debt of nearly Rs 940 crore and was among the top 50 defaulters.

Taste and flavor are not the same thing, although the two are often confused.

Although true taste occurs on the tongue, it is only one piece of the puzzle that makes up flavor. As much as 80% of what we perceive as taste actually comes from smell.
Everything we smell or taste is a response to chemicals. The characteristic smell of cloves, for example, comes from one chemical called eugenol.

So, both artificial and natural flavors contain chemicals. The distinction between natural and artificial flavorings is the source of chemicals. Natural flavors are created from anything that can be eaten (i.e animals and vegetables), even if those edible things are processed in the lab to create flavorings.
Artificial flavors come from anything that is inedible (i.e petroleum) that is processed to create chemicals of flavorings.

Here is the official FDA definition of natural flavoring:
"Natural flavor is the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional."
The FDA's definition of an artificial flavor is any substance that does not meet the definition of a natural flavor.

Sometimes a chemical flavoring could be made from either natural or artificial sources - the resulting molecule is the same, but the route to making it can be different. 
So, why use artificial flavors at all? Well, the synthetic chemicals in artificial flavors generally cost less to produce than finding natural sources of chemicals. They are also potentially safer because they have been rigorously tested and used. Producing them can be more eco-friendly as well, since it doesn't require growing fields of food first.

The compound vanillin, for example, is responsible for the flavor and smell of vanilla. In nature, vanillin comes from an orchid native to Mexico. The process of extracting this pure, natural chemical is extremely lengthy and expensive. So scientists found a way to make a synthetic version of vanillin in a lab.

Some natural flavors can be more dangerous than the artificial ones. Traces of cyanide can be found in almond flavor, or Benzaldehyde, when derived from nature. That's why in movies, the smell of bitter of almonds on the victim is often linked to cyanide poisoning.

Some say they <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@maci.mitrey/video/7122604152206740782?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7120698119249577518" target="_blank" rel="noopener">prefer the scent to that of standard insect repellent DEET</a> and claim it <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@pocketpauli/video/7121951745936297258?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7120698119249577518" target="_blank" rel="noopener">works better than standard mosquito repellent.</a> TikTok is rife with <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health-news/mouth-taping-what-to-know-about-this-dangerous-tiktok-trend">unsubstantiated</a> or <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/fda-warning-avocado-hack-salmonella-bacteria-1708562">unsafe hacks,</a> but surprisingly, a <a href="https://academic.oup.com/jinsectscience/article/15/1/140/2583458#F1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2015 study</a> backs up Bombshell-as-bug-spray idea. The study tested eight common insect repellents plus Bombshell, and the perfume was shown to repel mosquitoes for up to 120 minutes — beating most of the botanical mosquito repellents included in the study. Mosquitos are attracted to humans based on a combination of "olfactory clues" like body heat, carbon dioxide, and skin odor, Dr. Floyd Shockley, the entomology collections manager at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, told Insider. The perfume is more likely acting as a form of "chemical camouflage," Shockley said, than a repellent.But while Bombshell may technically get the job done, using perfume as a mosquito repellent isn't exactly cost-effective. A can of OFF! — which was shown to be more effective than Bombshell in the same 2015 study — will cost you as little as $8, while a bottle of <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.victoriassecret.com%2Fus%2Fbeauty%2Fbeauty-catalog%2F5000006601">Bombshell Eau du Parfum</a> will cost you $60; a mist $25; and a rollerball $20. Additionally, it's important to note that participants in the 2015 study applied about five times the standard volume of perfume — about 0.5 ml, whereas a typical spritz of perfume is closer to 0.1 ml. So, while it's effective in large doses, those doses aren't exactly realistic for everyday usage — either for easy wearability or for cost. "If you use enough then mosquitoes won't 'see' you as a potential host because you won't smell right," Shockley said of the Bombshell fragrance. But, "at the doses used in those studies, you would undoubtedly be repellent to other people too."

Indian stocks got off to a modestly positive start on Wednesday as traders latched on to blue chips in early deals after strong overnight cues from <keyword id="42111" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wall-Street">Wall Street</keyword> and a tick of green across Asia. 
 Meanwhile, a cautious mood is likely to prevail in the coming days as traders and investors decipher the <keyword id="6356435" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="US-Federal-reserve">US Federal Reserve</keyword>'s stance on interest rates. Bear in mind that the US Fed's decision will be made late evening today and Indian markets are shut for a local holiday on Thursday. So today's action is all that investors have to hedge their portfolios against the Fed's move. The rise in US interest rates, if it happens, will be the first in more than 9 years. The last rate rise happened in 2006. Markets will react cautiously to the continuous fall in India's monthly exports, now down 21 percent for the month of August, as global demand for India's products slips. 
 The <keyword id="6354813" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="nifty">Nifty</keyword> rose 49 points to 7,878 in initial trades. The Advance-Decline Ratio at 45/4 favoured the bulls with the risk-on trade in metal stocks continuing. Vedanta, Sun Pharma, Tata Steel, Cairn and Yes Bank were the top gainers on the Index while Reddy's, Larsen, BPCL, Power Grid and Cipla fell in early deals. TVS Motors, Sun Pharma and <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> were the top three traded stocks on the National Stock Exchange. 
 
Broader indices edged up in early trades. The CNX 100, CNX 200 and CNX 500 Indices were up 0.5 percent and sector-specific benchmarks were in fine shape as well. The Bank Nifty and CNX PSU Bank Index gained ground. CNX Pharma, CNX Metals and CNX Realty Indices posted smart gains. 
 The sentiment was equally good on the Bombay Stock Exchange with the <keyword id="6484188" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sensex">Sensex</keyword> gaining 164 points to 25,870. The Advance-Decline Ratio was a strong 28/2 on the index where Axis Bank, Bajaj Auto, ITC and TCS were strong gainers. Larsen, on the other hand, slipped in trade. 
 
All sectors, except for Capital Goods, were in the green in the futures and options market. The strongest gains were seen in the realty space with technology, telecom, media, Banking and metal futures edging up smartly in trade. TVS Motor, Divi's Labs and Adani Power were on the top gainers list while IFCI, Apollo Hospitals and Amtek Auto fell in initial deals. 
 
Ruchi Soya, TVS Motor, Sezal Glass and Orchid Chemicals figured on the top volume buzzers list on the National Stock Exchange.

Positive start to the day at Dalal Street. Will it hold on to it?

The <keyword id="6354813" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="nifty">Nifty</keyword> may stabilise at current levels on Friday as traders assess if this week's 2.4 percent cut on the Index is overdone. Investors will also seek cues from July's wholesale inflation number to decide their strategy for local markets.
 

	Meanwhile, the SGX Nifty signals a 17-point uptick at opening for Nifty futures today. The Parliament adjourned sine die without conducting a shred of legislative business. The GST remained embroiled in political mudslinging. Inflation is seen falling for the 5th straight month.
 

	Overseas cues are positive. China's Yuan rose for the first time in four days after its 2 percent devaluation and subsequent weakness, giving heart to traders preferring long positions. Major US indices were either flat or fell between 0.1-0.3% on Thursday. European indices presented a mixed trend, but posted gains of between 0.8-1.2 percent.
 

	The commodity space struck a bullish note for Indian equities. Crude oil futures remain at 6-year low with Brent Futures slipping below the crucial $50/bbl. Gold and Silver futures weaken further while Copper futures inch up. Markets in Japan, Hong Kong and China posted modest gains.
 

	Meanwhile, the Nifty Index closed at 8,355 points, up 6 on Thursday as investors bought into beaten down blue chips and traders latched on stocks that showed a mild uptrend. The Nifty's support levels are seen at 8,289 points and the resistance is visible at 8,433-8,530.
 

	The sentiment remains bearish in the cash market. Foreign Institutional Investors remained net sellers to the tune of `626 crore rupees on Wednesday, their 5th day of sales. Domestic institutions provided the much needed support with net purchases worth 546 crore rupees.
 

	The derivatives space saw muted action. Traders made net sales of 236 crore rupees for Index Futures; Net purchases of 193 crore rupees for Stock Futures; Purchases of `943 crore rupees for Index options and net buys of 19 crore rupees for Stock Options.
 

	Major earnings today are from Cipla, Hindalco and Jet Airways.
 

	Strong delivery based buying was seen in Infosys and Asian Paints.
