Keeping in mind Indian government’s ‘<keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>’ initiative, <keyword id="3148562" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Optiemus-Infracom-Limited">Optiemus Infracom Limited</keyword> and <keyword id="3148447" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wistron-Corporation">Wistron Corporation</keyword> have announced a joint venture agreement to set up manufacturing facilities for telecom products in India. While Optiemus Infracom Limited is a leading Indian telecom enterprise, Wistron Corporation is a Global Fortune 500 company and Taiwan’s leading <keyword id="1945116" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Original-design-manufacturer">original design manufacturer</keyword> (ODM). The announcement was done in the presence of Mr Amitabh Kant, IAS Secretary - DIPP, Government of India. 
 
As per information, a strategic investment worth approximately US$ 200million would be done in world-class infrastructure, technologies and processes over the next five years. This would be done to cater to the growing Indian and global demands of telecom products like smart phones, tablets and smart devices. 
 
The joint venture also aims to create over 15,000 employment opportunities in India in the next 5 years and provide a complete end to end solution to global and Indian brands encompassing world-class manufacturing infrastructure, distribution, retail and after sales.

Optiemus and Wistron join hands to invest $200mn to set up telecom manufacturing facilities in India

The Ministry of Electronics and IT has approved the applications of <keyword id="10591" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>, <keyword id="6354671" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foxconn">Foxconn</keyword> Hon Hai, <keyword id="274256" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pegatron">Pegatron</keyword>, Rising Star and <keyword id="1930805" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wistron">Wistron</keyword> from among the international applicants for manufacturing of <keyword id="38260" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobile-phones">mobile phones</keyword> in India under the government's Production-Linked Incentive scheme. Out of these, Foxconn Hon Hai, Wistron and Pegatron are contract manufacturers for <keyword id="626905" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apple-iPhones">Apple iPhones</keyword>. Apple (37 per cent) and Samsung (22 per cent) together account for nearly 60 per cent of global sales revenue of mobile phones and this scheme is expected to increase their manufacturing base manifold in the country, an official statement said. "The international mobile phone manufacturing companies that are approved under mobile phone (invoice value Rs 15,000 and above) segment are Samsung, Foxconn Hon Hai, Rising Star, Wistron and Pegatron," it said. The domestic companies approved for mobile phone manufacturing under the scheme are Lava, Bhagwati (<keyword id="71696" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword>), Padget Electronics, UTL Neolyncs and Optiemus Electronics. These companies are expected to expand their manufacturing operations in a significant manner. Further, six companies approved under the Specified Electronic Components Segment are AAT&amp;S, Ascent Circuits, Visicon, Walsin, Sahasra and Neolync. The PLI scheme for large scale electronics manufacturing notified on April 1, 2020, extends an incentive of 4-6 per cent on incremental sales (over base year) of goods under target segments that are manufactured in India to eligible companies, for a period of five years subsequent to the base year (FY2019-20). In total, the ministry has approved the applications of 16 companies under the scheme. As per the ministry, the companies approved under the scheme will bring additional investment in electronics manufacturing to the tune of Rs 11,000 crore. The companies will also generate more than 2 lakh direct employment opportunities in the next five years along with creation of additional indirect employment of nearly 3 times the direct employment, the statement said. "The PLI scheme has been a huge success in terms of the applications received from global as well as domestic mobile phone manufacturing companies and electronic components manufacturers," a tweet by the ministry quoted Union Minister for Electronics and IT, <keyword id="6354886" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ravi-Shankar-Prasad">Ravi Shankar Prasad</keyword>, as saying. The industry also has hailed the approvals. ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo said: "The approval for global companies is on expected lines. The approval for Indian companies is very fair and each company has got one approval." He noted that now the challenge would be whether these Indian companies build core design and brand capabilities and also scale up to become globally competitive, or some of them use it tactically and fade out with the PLI incentive. Wistron, one of Apple’s manufacturing partners, just had its ₹5,091 crore project application <a href="https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/wistrons-rs-5000-crore-plan-for-apple-gets-ministry-nod/68296665">approved</a> by the IT Ministry — but it yet to be greenlit by the cabinet.

 The company has already secured a 43-acre plot near Bengaluru to setup the new plant for the project. Wistron isn’t the only company to ramp up local production in India. In December 2018, Foxconn — another manufacturing arm of Apple — also announced plans to locally manufacture ‘high-end’ iPhones in India. For <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=apple+iphone&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Apple</a>, it’s a win on two fronts. One, it might be able to reduce the price of iPhones in the world’s second largest smartphone market. And two, widening assembly beyond China will help the company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/xiaomi-apple-samsung-will-fight-over-india-as-china-sales-slump/articleshow/67488525.cms">mitigate the risks</a> of the US-China trade war. Wistron’s India story If you haven’t heard of Wistron, then you might have heard of Optiemus — popularly known as the company that makes Blackberry devices. A joint-venture between the two made them the <a href="https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/optiemus-wistron-is-largest-contract-phone-maker-in-india/52894692">largest</a> contract phone makers in India in 2016 — manufacturing phones for LG, OnePlus and HTC. When it comes to Apple, Wistron is already assembling the iPhone SE and 6S in India. But, ‘assembling’ isn’t the same as making a phone from scratch. It’s one of the reasons that the iPhones are still expensive. When you’re assembling a phone, you’re still importing all the parts — and thus, still subject to import duty. Manufacturing a phone in India itself could <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2019/03/07/iphone-8-iphone-xs-india/">potentially</a> reduce prices of iPhones by 40% foregoing the government tariffs. The plan that Wistron put before the Indian government included the production of the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR — Apple’s most recent iPhones. But even taking the 40% surcharge out of the equation, the iPhone — the price of the iPhone XS Max begins at ₹109,900 and the cheapest of the three variants, the iPhone XR, costs at least ₹76,900. Two years ago, adjusting the price of a smartphone might have been enough to win over the Indian market. But, it might not be enough to conquer the increase in competition with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/this-massive-chinese-phone-company-outsmarted-apple-in-china-and-india-and-now-its-heading-to-the-west/articleshow/67726507.cms">new players</a> coming in. And even consumers have evolved beyond price, something that Xiaomi, ASUS and Samsung are capitalizing on by bringing in higher specifications on budget devices. He said that the government is looking to make India a hub of other electronic products as well with the expansion of the PLI scheme to other sectors. "We wanted India to become the second largest mobile manufacturer in the world. Now I am pushing India to surpass China. That's my goal and I am very clearly defining it," Prasad said at the annual general meeting of industry chamber FICCI. India became the second largest mobile manufacturing country in 2017. <keyword id="10428852" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-national-policy-on-electronics-2019">The National Policy on Electronics 2019</keyword> (NPE) envisages electronic manufacturing turnover of more than Rs 26 lakh crore by 2025, out of which Rs 13 lakh crore is expected to come from the mobile phone segment. PLI is designed to propel India's stature and ease of doing business under the leadership of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to showcase India as an alternate manufacturing destination, Prasad said. "PLI is designed to enable global champion companies to come to India and make Indian companies national champion," he noted. The government has started a PLI scheme under which eligible companies can get sops of around Rs 48,000 crore. The government has cleared 16 proposals from domestic and international companies entailing investment of Rs 11,000 crore under the PLI scheme to manufacture mobile phones worth Rs 10.5 lakh crore over the next five years. The companies include iPhone maker Apple's contract manufacturers Foxconn Hon Hai, Wistron and Pegatron, apart from Samsung and Rising Star. India wants to beat China at mobile manufacturing by expanding PLI schemes to more sectors

The minister said these proposals under the government's Rs 41,000-crore production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for mobile phone manufacturing are expected to create around 12 lakh jobs, 3 lakh direct and 9 lakh indirect employment opportunities, in the country. "There will be huge (mobile phone) production of around Rs 11 lakh crore, huge export of around Rs 7 lakh crore and great employment opportunity for 3 lakh direct and 9 lakh indirect people. I personally thank all the companies that have applied," Prasad told reporters. He said that a total of 22 companies have filed applications under the PLI scheme from various countries including Taiwan, South Korea, Germany, Austria, etc. "The benchmark for international companies was that they make mobile phones priced at or above Rs 15,000. International companies that have applied are Samsung, Foxconn Hon Hai, Rising Star, Wistron and Pegatron," Prasad said. Foxconn Hon Hai, Wistron and Pegatron are contract manufacturers for Apple iPhones. There is no price limit for Indian companies under the scheme. In terms of revenue, Apple accounts for 37 per cent and Samsung 22 per cent for global sales of mobile phones and the PLI scheme is expected to increase their manufacturing base manifold in the country, an official statement issued by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (Meity) said. The minister further said these companies will make thousands of crores investments based on the approval of their proposal. Prasad said Indian companies, including Lava, Dixon Technologies, Bhagwati (Micromax), Padget Electronics, Sojo Manufacturing Services and Optiemus Electronics, have applied under the scheme and 10 companies have filed applications under the Specified Electronic Components Segment. The companies that have applied for components production of around Rs 45,000 crore include AT&amp;S, Ascent Circuits, Visicon, Walsin, Sahasra, Vitesco and Neolync. There were no applications from Chinese companies under the scheme. The minister said India is not averse to investment from any country but companies will have to follow rules related to security clearance, etc. The government notified production linked incentive scheme for large scale electronics manufacturing, the scheme for promotion of manufacturing of electronic components and semiconductors, and the modified electronics manufacturing clusters (EMC 2.0) scheme. The government expects to attract Rs 1 lakh crore investment in the sector and sees a target manufacturing revenue potential of Rs 10 lakh crore by 2025. The fresh proposals have exceeded the government's manufacturing revenue target but the final outcome will depend on the decision of the screening committee that will select projects eligible for incentives.

Apple vendors, Samsung, others line up with ₹11-lakh cr mobile phone mfg proposals: Prasad

<keyword id="61562" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="LG-Electronics">LG Electronics</keyword>, the South Korean multinational electronics company, has set up its first manufacturing unit in India, where it would be manufacturing India-specific smartphone models, so that it can benefit from the fast-growing market. 
 
LG has already signed an agreement with GDN Enterprises, which is a part of New Delhi-based Optiemus Group, for manufacturing these models. Trial production has been started with two models, while expansion to include more models is in the pipeline. 
 
Optiemus Group, which already currently manufactures for HTC and Oppo, will be setting up a new plant under a joint venture with Taiwan's leading contract manufacturer Wistron. 
 While giving a boost to the <keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make In India</keyword> campaign of the Indian government, LG too would get a price edge, given that duties and taxes will come down by more than 10%. The move is also aimed to bring LG back to the <keyword id="1034848" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-smartphone-market">Indian smartphone market</keyword>, a major share of which has been lost. 
 "The business has been a poor performer due to poor product portfolio. We will revamp the portfolio from this month. Our products are superior to competition which we will focus through experiential marketing," <keyword id="188506" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="LG-India">LG India</keyword> managing director Ki Wan Kim said. 
 
For a long time now, LG has been leading the Indian market in refrigerators, washing machines and microwave ovens; it has also branched into flat panel televisions so that it doesn’t only depend on home appliances segment. 
 
Now it looks forward to rebuilding the smartphone business where it had failed to attract much customers despite several attempts. 
"We will pursue to make LG a premium brand in India. The effort is to develop products based on consumer insights. While for existing categories we will focus on energy efficient products, we are also evaluating air and water purifiers as next growth areas," Kim added.

Major boost for Make In India as LG installs production unit in country

Most of the Samsung smartphones that Indians have in their hands today, along with the ones from home-grown brand like Karbonn, Lava or Intex, are being 'Made in India,' with high chances that they were assembled in the <keyword id="18858" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Noida">Noida</keyword>-Greater Noida region, the Uttar Pradesh industrial city neighbouring Delhi. 
 
Last year’s budget announced a 10.5% duty differential between imported devices and the ones made in India, after which Noida became the country’s biggest smartphone hub, being able to make more than 140 million devices per year, a whopping 40% more than what’s needed in a year. 
 
Even though all the critical components of a smartphone, processors for example, still come from China and Taiwan , Noida still remains a key part for the industry, with the local industry giving about 5-8% of value addition at present, which can be taken up to around 35% in coming five years. 
 
It all started with Samsung starting local manufacturing a decade ago, seeding a significant number of smartphone component suppliers from Noida. 
 
"All our mobile phones, from feature phones to the Galaxy S7 that we sell in India, are manufactured at our Noida factory, and we will continue to explore future investment opportunities," a spokesperson for Samsung told TNN. 
 
Now, Noida is home to the units of several Indian brands like Lava, Intex and Karbonn, along with Taiwanese contract manufacturer Wistron, which is making phones for LG, OnePlus, Oppo and HTC in partnership with home-grown telecom retailer and manufacturer Optiemus. Each factory set up in the city creates 3,000-4,000 direct jobs for mostly high-school or ITI graduates. 
 
Even though UP is not generally regarded as the best place to do business, the fact that Noida shares borders with Delhi has helped it bloom. 
 
Now that there are efforts being made to develop R&amp;D and design capabilities in India so that the reliance on partners in China and Taiwan can be lessened, Noida is all set to grow even further. 
 
"Electronics manufacturing is a focus of the government as part of the 'Make in India' initiative. The current investments have resulted in as many as 40,000 direct jobs and over 1.2 lakh indirect employment. We estimate that mobile phone production will reach a level of around 500 million devices by 2019-20," said IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.
