Give it a grade or rating on a scale of 1-10 and explain the reason for your grading and scoring."o1 said it "thought for 12 seconds" before sharing its answer."As a marketing and branding expert, my honest reaction to naming an AI language model "o1" is that it poses several significant challenges. I would rate this name a 4 out of 10," it said.The model said the name o1 is too abstract, lacks brand identity, and could cause trademark concerns. o1 also said its name could face SEO challenges, and customers could confuse the "o" with a "0."While it might have human-like reasoning skills, it doesn't appear to have a human-like ability to deliver feedback gently or with tact."The name 'o1' lacks the distinctiveness and communicative power needed for effective branding of an AI language model," it said. The model "thought" for eight seconds and provided 10 new options, including LexiAI."Reasoning: Combines 'Lexi' (from 'lexicon,' meaning vocabulary or language) with 'AI,' indicating an artificial intelligence focus on language," o1 said.The model also suggested Linguista, EchoMind, NexText, Dialogix, WordSmith AI, Verba, InnovaLingo, Cognitext, and LuminaryAI.o1 explained its reasoning for suggesting those names, citing relevance, memorability, trademark availability, SEO, and pronunciation.Finally, BI asked o1 a third question:"What about if the main advancement in the model was that the AI model could follow a 'chain of thought' and 'reason' in a way previous models couldn't? What names would you suggest then?" BI asked.o1 responded after 15 seconds of thought and provided 20 potential names."LogicFlow," o1 said. This is how, for example, rumors started that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/beyonce-dnc-tmz-media-gossip-kamala-harris-2024-8">Beyoncé was going to perform at the DNC</a> or that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.theverge.com/23166273/fandom-music-kaitlyn-tiffany-one-direction-harry-styles-k-pop-decoder-podcast-interview">Harry Styles and One Direction bandmate Liam Payne</a> were in a secret relationship together for years.AI enthusiasts and insiders now have their own version of this. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/ai-influencers-are-falling-for-hoaxes-and-scams.html">New York Magazine's John Herrman</a> just wrote about how there's a bit of a meltdown currently happening in the AI fandom.This is a group that is excited and positive about AI and eager for its advancement to AGI. This is different from the AI <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/will-ai-destroy-humanity-pdoom-ai-number-doomer-2023-12">doomers</a>, who fear that AGI will lead to humanity's decimation. These AI stans are excited for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-gpt5-what-is-at-stake-sam-altman-ai-2024-7">OpenAI's next release</a>. They're palpably excited about a rumored new OpenAI project with the codename "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-hints-at-project-strawberry-2024-8">Strawberry</a>" and use the strawberry emoji frequently. When Sam Altman posted a photo of strawberries growing in his garden, they flipped out. There's also excitement about another project (or former codename for Strawberry, since it's all rumors) called Q*.An influencer whose X avatar is Joaquin Pheonix in "Her" and has strawberry emojis in his X name recently caused a big stir in this world. They predicted a release date for Strawberry, and played up the idea that they might be an OpenAI insider, which was eventually revealed to be totally untrue.Meanwhile, some even wilder drama just happened where another AI influencer named Lily Ashwood came onto an X Space (you know the online drama is going to be hard to follow when a lot of it involves things that went down in an X Space). Ashwood had a stilted speaking affect, and people speculated that she wasn't a real human at all but some new AI voice technology. Ashwood has since <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/lilyofashwood/status/1825341816872243503">posted</a> a video of herself to dispel the rumor, and frankly, whether someone is an AI-generated chatbot is none of my business.To recap: what we have here is a group of highly passionate and maybe slightly paranoid people who believe that pseudonymous online accounts are feeding them drips of information from inside powerful institutions. There's clues and allusions made of codewords and insider lingo and symbols. And sometimes they get <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-hints-at-project-strawberry-2024-8">some light engagement on X from the Big Boss himself</a>, just enough to fuel the true believers. Oh, and there's something important to all of this called Q*. Does any of this sound familiar?What fascinates me about this is not the release date of OpenAI's new product or what it will do (I mean, I'm interested in that, too!). But even if AGI never happens, this shows AI has reached a new height: online fandom meltdown.

The Sam Altman stans are having a meltdown. This sounds familiar. 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Sam Altman had a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-mess-concerns-over-nda-safety-sam-altman-2024-6">rough start to 2024</a>.</li><li>But when it comes to business, things keep looking up.</li></ul><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-sam-altman-new-era-tech-villian-chatgpt-safety-2024-5">Sam Altman</a> had an undeniably bad start to the year.Less than 12 months ago, the wunderkind of artificial intelligence seemed invincible. His sudden ousting as the CEO of OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, in November, was met with rallying cries of outrage from his employees and the tech world. The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-return-openai-ceo-2023-11">banishment didn't last long</a> — fewer than five days, to be precise.As one VC partner told Business Insider at the time: "Sam is bigger than Taylor Swift."But the bigger you are, the faster the fall, and a few months later, things began to unravel.Skeptics began to murmur to the media about the picture of a future that his <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-scope-of-sam-altmans-future-ai-empire-open-ai-2024-3">wide scope of investments seemed to paint</a>. Some likened it to a dystopian sci-fi movie, one where machines ruled the world. Others simply said <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-hype-openai-silicon-valley-venture-capital-2024-3">Altman was overhyped</a>, that he didn't have all the answers that the public and investors seemed to expect of him.Then, Altman's shiny image began to tarnish even further.In May, he made an enemy of Oscar-winner Scarlett Johansson when ChatGPT's new <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-event-live-updates-sam-altman-announcement-chatgpt-news-2024-5">GPT-4o model</a> used an uncannily similar sounding voice to the character she voiced in the — again — dystopian sci-fi movie "Her." The blowback was so fierce that Time Magazine recently named Johansson, who said she had refused to voice the technology, one of the most influential people in AI. (<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-scarlett-johansson-voice-defense-sam-altman-washington-post-chatgpt-2024-5">OpenAI's response was messy</a>; it pulled the voice and admitted to a lack of internal communication regarding the matter.)Meanwhile, around the same time, some of the company's top talent began leaving — and not all that quietly. Its cofounder and chief scientist <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jan-leike-ilya-sutskever-resignations-superalignment-openai-superintelligence-safe-humanity-2024-5">Ilya Sutskever and machine learning researcher Jan Leike</a>, who together led the company's team dedicated to safety, quit, joining others who had stepped down."Over the past years, safety culture and processes have taken a backseat to shiny products," Leike wrote in a series of social media posts announcing his departure.Reports surfaced that other employees were unhappy with safety standards around the evolution of AI at the company — and that they felt they couldn't speak out due to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-openai-nda-clause-vested-equity-ilya-sutskever-2024-5">unusual NDAs</a>. A group of nine former and current employees did come forward, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-employee-letter-google-deepmind-ai-risks-protections-2024-6">blowing the whistle</a> on a culture where financials seemed to overshadow safety, products appeared rushed out, and criticism was clamped down on. The concerns seemed to mirror those of former board members.By July, things quieted down in the news cycle, but it hasn't been smooth sailing internally at OpenAI. Two other <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-leadership-changes-brockman-deng-schulman-anthropic-departures-2024-8">leaders left</a> — one joining Leike at rival Anthropic — and president Greg Brockman has taken an extended leave of absence. Only two OpenAI cofounders remain at the company.But all that chaos appears not to matter that much. Thanks to good old-fashioned capitalism, Altman and OpenAI have enjoyed business win after win and held their positions as the leaders in the aggressive AI race.In June, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-holds-power-openai-deal-chatgpt-iphones-tim-cook-2024-6">Apple announced a landmark deal</a> with the artificial intelligence company. The Silicon Valley giant will rely on OpenAI's technology for certain products, allowing the ChatGPT-maker to reach the billions of people with Apple devices. The deal sealed its importance with the world's two biggest companies — Apple and Microsoft, which has a multibillion-dollar investment in OpenAI — and its technology will now be able to permeate Bing, Word, Siri, and more.More recently, reports have surfaced that OpenAI is looking to raise money, andseemsooks like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-microsoft-rivalry-deepens-with-openai-funding-round-talks-2024-8">everyone who is anyone in the world of technology</a>, from Apple to Nvidia, wants a piece of Altman. The round, which is $6.5 billion, is said to give <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-fundraising-150-billion-valuation-new-funding-round-altman-thrive-2024-9">OpenAI a valuation of $150 billion</a> — more than the market cap of Goldman Sachs and almost double its most recent valuation of $86 billion — which would make it one of the most valuable private companies in the world.The interest in participating in the investment proves that when it comes to AI, OpenAI and Altman are still in the lead and have the faith of many of tech's biggest players.And then, earlier this week, the company launched its newest model, OpenAI o1, previously referred to by the codename Strawberry and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-fans-speculate-clues-sam-altman-hints-strawberry-q-openai-2024-8">much awaited by OpenAI fanboys</a>. The latest release, which Altman touted with humility, can solve problems with "complex reasoning" and "performs similarly to PhD students on challenging benchmark tasks in physics, chemistry, and biology." To soothe the skeptics, the company noted that the new model offers "significant advances for safety and alignment.""It is amazing, still limited, and, perhaps most importantly, a signal of where things are heading," Wharton professor Ethan Mollick wrote in his review of the new technology.Sprinkle in a few good PR moments — promising to give away a majority of his fortune by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-sam-altman-signs-giving-pledge-donate-majority-wealth-2024-5">signing the Giving Pledge</a>, pictures of him smiling from Sun Valley with the likes of Anderson Cooper and Josh Kushner — and it looks like things are on the up for Mr. Altman. When he was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-koenigsegg-regera-expensive-sports-car-video-openai-musk-2024-7#:~:text=Sam%20Altman%20is%20seen%20driving,helping%20them%20pass%20their%20tests.&amp;text=A%20car%20enthusiast%20posted%20a,a%20super%20rare%20Koenigsegg%20Regera.">spotted in a $4.6 million sportscar</a>, it didn't give rise to criticism from the masses, but words of thanks from ChatGPT users who seemed genuinely happy for him.He even got Oprah Winfrey herself to seal the deal."I thought Sam Altman did a really good job in the special," she told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/09/11/oprah-winfrey-interview-ai-special/">The Washington Post</a> in a discussion about her TV program on artificial intelligence. "He surprised me in his clarity and efficacy and being able to speak about it in a language that humans can understand. I didn't expect that."

Sam Altman may be in his villain era, but no one seems to care

Winfrey also interviewed FBI Director Christopher Wary and the novelist Marilynne Robinson.Throughout the interview, Altman could be seen listening intently to Winfrey's simple but direct line of questioning.One of the points Winfrey pressed Altman on was that of public trust."The bottom line for, I think, most people is whether or not you can trust the people who are in charge. And I know you went through a phase where your own board said, 'We don't trust you.' And then you got yourself another board," Winfrey said, referencing <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-sam-altman-did-so-bad-he-got-fired-openai-2023-12">Altman's brief ousting</a> in 2023, which came with allegations that the CEO <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-board-member-details-sam-altman-lied-allegation-ousted-2024-5">lied to his board</a>."How do we know we can trust you?" Winfrey asked.What followed wasn't new answers from the CEO. "The best thing we can do is to put this technology in the hands of people, talk about what it is capable of, what it's not, what we think is going to come, what we think might come, give our best advice about how society should decide to use this, say when we think it's important to not release something, which we also might get wrong, and build up that trust over time. But it is clear that this is going to be a very impactful technology and I think a lot of scrutiny is thus super warranted."Winfrey also asked Altman how he feels about being billed "the most powerful and perhaps most dangerous man on the planet.""It's definitely strange to hear you say that," Altman said. I think the good will be incredible, but there will be bad too, and we'll mitigate as much as we can. We have the whole field. But this technology will be misused, like every other technology before it.
