<ul class="summary-list"><li>Forget Apple's nerd goggles and OpenAI's ChatGPT.</li><li>The most important tech product of 2024 comes from an unusual source. </li></ul>On Friday, former Meta product manager Dan Grover <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/DanGrover/status/1748435075279270234">tweeted</a> about a new service that he said will vie with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-vision-pro-fatal-flaw-nerd-goggles-uncool-2023-6">Apple's goggles</a> and OpenAI's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-chat-gpt-2023-1">ChatGPT</a> as the "biggest/most impactful product launch" in tech. I'll go further and say this offering is the most important tech product of 2024. It doesn't need <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-data-centers-energy-cloud-microsoft-chatpgt-amazon-google-2023-7">energy sucking AI data centers</a>, or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-times-content-removed-common-crawl-ai-training-dataset-2023-11">legally dubious data-siphoning</a> to work. It doesn't require you to download an app and pay a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-chatgpt-ai-app-store-tax-openai-ios-2023-5">30% App Store tax to Apple</a>. It won't make anyone in Silicon Valley rich. It won't help build another giant tech platform. There will be no IPO or glowing profile of the founder on the cover of Fortune or Forbes. What it could do is something that Silicon Valley always claims to do, but sometimes fails to deliver on: Help millions of regular people. <h2>Direct File</h2>I'm talking about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.irs.gov/about-irs/a-closer-look-at-the-irs-direct-file-pilot">Direct File</a>, a new way for many Americans to file their taxes for free. The IRS is launching the online service as a pilot program this tax season, which starts in earnest later this month.Americans who qualify for free tax preparation earn an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free">annual adjusted gross income of no more than $79,000.</a> (AGI is your total income minus any eligible deductions or adjustments). The median US household income in the US is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.census.gov/library/publications/2023/demo/p60-279.html">about $75,000</a>. That's a heck of a lot of people who can use Direct File.At the moment, it's available in 12 states including Arizona, California, Florida, New York, and Texas. Many other states are interested in taking part, the IRS says. It's mainly for people with relatively simple tax situations, but millions of taxpayers should be able to save a lot of money using Direct File. <h2>The Intuit scandal</h2>The story behind this new product is even more interesting. It reveals how some companies take advantage of consumers' limited tech knowledge, and how <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-search-getting-worse-spam-affiliate-links-duckduckgo-bing-2024-1">Google Search</a> was cynically used to trick lower-income Americans into paying for something they didn't need.The scandal centers on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/turbotax-settlement-deceptive-advertising-how-to-know-you-get-check-2023-5">Intuit</a>, a major provider of tax preparation software. You can read all about its infuriating shenanigans over at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.propublica.org/article/inside-turbotax-20-year-fight-to-stop-americans-from-filing-their-taxes-for-free">ProPublica</a>, which investigated the company.Most wealthy countries make filing your taxes simple and free. Not the US, though. And Intuit waged a long campaign to stop any US government initiatives to make filing taxes easier or cheaper, according to ProPublica.An internal planning document also suggested that Intuit intentionally targeted minorities for media manipulation, according to the ProPublica investigation. "Buy ads for op-eds/editorials/stories in African American and Latino media," stated that PowerPoint slide dug up by the publication.<h2>Hiding from Google</h2>About two decades ago, Intuit and other companies agreed to provide free tax prep for lower-income people in return for the IRS pledging not to create its own offering. Then Intuit tried to undermine the system known as Free File. Intuit <a target="_blank" href="https://www.propublica.org/article/turbotax-deliberately-hides-its-free-file-page-from-search-engines">hid its its Free File web page</a> from Google's search engine, making it nearly impossible for people to find the free filing service, according to ProPublica.ProPublica found tax prep competitors doing similar things. It also found Intuit engaging in other tactics, such as using unclear software design to allegedly trick people into upgrading to paid offerings. This disingenuous behavior was happening while Intuit outwardly presented the standard Silicon Valley corporate message of being a good citizen and helping the world.<h2>Intuit's response</h2>"Any assertions that Intuit did not and does not promote free tax preparation are wholly inaccurate and not based on facts," Tania Mercado, a spokesperson for Intuit, wrote in an email to BI. "Intuit has always been clear, fair, and transparent with its customers and is committed to free tax preparation."She also questioned the value of the new Direct File service in various ways."Filing taxes without someone advocating for your highest refund could be a recipe for overpaying the Internal Revenue Service and Departments of Revenue," Mercado wrote in a statement.She pointed out that Direct File is not free because the IRS is funded by taxpayer dollars, calling Direct File "a thinly veiled scheme where billions of taxpayer dollars will be unnecessarily used to pay for something already completely free of charge today — free to the taxpayer and actually free for the government."Intuit ended up paying $141 million to victims to settle allegations it deceived low-income Americans into paying to file their taxes when they actually qualified to file for free. In a blog, the company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.intuit.com/blog/news-social/reaffirming-our-commitment-to-free-tax-preparation/">didn't admit wrongdoing</a>. Intuit made more than $2 billion in its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sec.gov/ix?doc=/Archives/edgar/data/0000896878/000089687823000034/intu-20230731.htm#i158eb573169a472c8d452410afcb9cd2_124">latest fiscal year</a>.<h2>Give Direct File a try</h2>Which brings us back to the new Direct File service. With hindsight, the IRS maybe should have just built this free tax prep service itself 20 years ago, instead of trusting for-profit companies to do it. Today, though, there are more web and cloud tools available to make such a service available more efficiently. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/secyellen/status/1748434625385349223?s=46&amp;t=qXeQ5wkxERk2ASthsfwBVQ">said</a> the pilot program will start small in 2024, to help the IRS to test it and learn from taxpayers.If you live in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.irs.gov/about-irs/strategic-plan/direct-file#participating-states">these 12 states</a>, and you have a relatively simple tax situation, such as W-2 salary income and taking the standard deduction, you should check out Direct File this tax season. It could save you some real money. And don't rely on Google to find the right IRS website for this! The search engine is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/simple-fix-online-search-google-amazon-bing-bright-pink-ads-2023-11">stuffed with ads</a> these days, which makes finding what you really need more difficult. When I searched for "free file taxes" this weekend, the top of Google's results page was full of ads. Guess who was top of the paid list? Intuit's TurboTax. At the very bottom – almost out of view on my full sized laptop – was the actual IRS website you need. Direct File is the most important tech product of 2024, helping you to finally file your taxes for free

The <keyword id="19994390" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="GST-Council" source="keywords">GST Council</keyword> on Monday is expected to deliberate on a host of issues, including <keyword id="20118944" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="taxation" source="keywords">taxation</keyword> of insurance premiums, GoM's suggestions on rate rationalisation, and a status report on <keyword id="19939772" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-gaming" source="keywords">online gaming</keyword>, sources said. Sources said the fitment committee, comprising Centre and state tax officials, will present a report on GST levied on life, health and reinsurance premiums and the revenue implications. The GST Council, chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and comprising state ministers, will decide on whether to reduce the tax burden on <keyword id="19894985" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="health-insurance" source="keywords">health insurance</keyword> from the current 18% or exempt certain categories of individuals, like senior citizens. The deliberations will also happen with regard to the goods and services tax (GST) cut on <keyword id="23083492" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="life-insurance-premium" source="keywords">life insurance premium</keyword>. In 2023-24, the Centre and states collected Rs 8,262.94 crore through GST on health <keyword id="22612491" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance-premium" source="keywords">insurance premium</keyword>, while Rs 1,484.36 crore was collected on account of GST on health reinsurance premium. The issue of taxation on insurance premium figured in Parliament discussions with opposition members demanding that health and life insurance premiums be exempt from GST. Even Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari wrote to Sitharaman on the issue. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her reply to discussion on the Finance Bill had said 75% of the GST collected goes to states and opposition members should ask their state finance ministers to bring the proposal at the GST Council. West Bengal Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya had raised the issue in the meeting of the Group of Ministers (GoM) on rate rationalisation last month and the matter was referred to the fitment committee for further data analysis. The GoM had opined against any tinkering of four-tier GST slab of 5, 12, 18, and 28 % for the time being. The panel, however, had asked the fitment committee to look into any scope for rationalisation of rates of goods and services. With regard to online gaming, Centre and state tax officers will present a "status report" before the GST Council. The report would include <keyword id="20053837" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GST-revenue" source="keywords">GST revenue</keyword> collection from the online gaming sector before and after October 1, 2023. From October 1, 2023, entry-level bets placed on online gaming platforms and casinos were subject to 28% GST. Prior to that, many online gaming companies were not paying 28% GST, arguing that there were differential tax rates for games of skill and games of chance. The GST Council in its meeting in August 2023 had clarified that online gaming platforms were required to pay 28% tax and subsequently, Central GST law was amended to make the taxation provision clear. Offshore gaming platforms were also mandated to register with GST authorities and pay taxes, failing which the government would block those sites. The council had then decided that the taxation on online gaming sector would be reviewed after six months of its implementation. Sources said the Council would deliberate on the status of taxation on the sector, and any change in tax rates is unlikely. Besides, the Council is likely to be apprised about the ongoing drive against fake registration, the success of the drive and action taken against such entities. The total amount of suspected GST evasion would also be presented before the Council. The drive, from August 16, 2024, to October 15, 2024, is aimed at detecting suspicious/fake GSTINs and to conduct requisite verification and further remedial action to weed out these fake billers. In the first drive between May 16, 2023 to July 15, 2023, against fake registration, 21,791 entities (11,392 pertaining to state tax jurisdiction and 10,399 pertaining to CBIC jurisdiction) having GST registration were discovered to be non-existent. An amount of Rs 24,010 crore (state - Rs 8,805 crore + centre - Rs 15,205 crore) of suspected tax evasion was detected during the special drive. Also, the Council would approve notifications, including that of the amnesty scheme, announced in the last council meeting. The council in June meeting took a host of taxpayer-friendly measures, including waiver of interest and penalty for demand notices issued in the first three years of GST -- 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20 -- if the full tax demanded is paid by March 31, 2025. To reduce litigation, a monetary limit for tax officers, to file appeals before the GST Appellate Tribunal, the High Court and the Supreme Court was fixed at Rs 20 lakh, Rs 1 crore and Rs 2 crore, respectively, by the Council. It also recommended a reduction of the quantum of pre-deposit required to be paid by taxpayers for filing of appeals under goods and services tax (GST).

The Act <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-moving-closer-letting-americans-file-taxes-online-and-free-2022-9">set aside $15 million</a> for the Treasury Department to look into the viability of such a site, which would rival paid services like TurboTax and H&amp;R Block. "Compare that with Sweden. Some taxpayers can file simply by replying to a text message. We can and must do better."

Sometimes, the TDS may not have been deducted by the employer. “Generally, the employers provide the tax computation to the employees for their approval. The employees may raise any concerns regarding non-deduction of TDS to their employers in case no such TDS is deducted,” says Suresh Surana, Founder, RSM India, an audit, tax and consulting services provider. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="Steps to view form 26AS">Steps to view form 26AS</cmsannotation> To check if your employer has deducted TDS, follow these steps. First, register on the Income Tax Department's portal by visiting their website, and completing the registration process. Once registered, log in to the e-Filing portal using your credentials. Look for the "View Form 26AS (Tax Credit)" option, which can be found under the e-file section. Confirm the disclaimer, and proceed by selecting the relevant tick box. Next, choose the assessment year for which you want to view Form 26AS. Remember that the assessment year usually corresponds to the financial year. Finally, you'll have two viewing options: downloading the Form 26AS statement as a PDF, or viewing it directly on the portal in HTML format. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="What to do in case of a discrepancy">What to do in case of a discrepancy</cmsannotation> “If you find that TDS has not been deducted by your employer, or if there are discrepancies in the TDS details, you should take the following steps,” says Sharma. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="Contact your employer:">Contact your employer: </cmsannotation>Reach out to your employer, and discuss the issue. Provide them with the necessary details, and supporting documents to rectify the situation. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The FTC filed a lawsuit against H&amp;R Block over what the commission called deceptive advertising.</li><li>It alleges that H&amp;R Block tricks users into starting with a higher-cost service, making downgrading difficult.</li></ul>So-called "free" online tax filing services like Intuit's TurboTax and H&amp;R Block's Online Filing option have, for a long time, not actually been free for many Americans.But the FTC has now committed to taking them on one by one — most recently with a new lawsuit against H&amp;R Block.The consumer protection agency <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/ftc_gov/pdf/d09427hrblockadmincomplaintpublic.pdf">filed a complaint against H&amp;R Block</a> last week, accusing the company of deceptive advertising and unfairly deleting users' tax data."H&amp;R Block designed its online products to present an obstacle course of tedious challenges to consumers, pressuring them into overpaying for its products," Samuel Levine, the Director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/02/ftc-takes-action-against-tax-prep-company-hr-block-wiping-consumers-data-deceptively-marketing-free">said in a press release</a>."Today's action demonstrates that companies using coercive techniques that harm consumers can expect to hear from the FTC," Levine continued. In its complaint, the FTC alleges that H&amp;R Block's online filing system leads users to start off with a higher-cost service, having them spend time entering all their tax information before they realize later on in the process that they can actually downgrade to a free or lower-cost option.But, when they try to downgrade, they are met with a series of time-consuming challenges, according to the FTC's statement. The system deletes all the data the user had just painstakingly entered, telling them to instead contact a customer service agent to access the downgraded option, which makes them start all over again. In contrast, when a user wants to upgrade their service, the process is instant and seamless, the FTC alleged.The FTC's complaint also accused H&amp;R Block of deceptively advertising a "free" service, despite the fact that many users do not even qualify for it.In response to the allegations, H&amp;R Block's chief legal officer Dara Redler told Business Insider the company provides "a great deal of value, unmatched tax expertise, and fair and transparent pricing.""Further, H&amp;R Block allows consumers to downgrade to a less-expensive DIY Product via multiple mechanisms while ensuring the preparation of accurate tax returns," Redler's statement to Business Insider continued.If all this sounds familiar, that's because it is. The FTC has also taken on Intuit, the maker of TurboTax, accusing them of misleading practices. The consumer agency first sued Intuit in 2022, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/turbotax-cant-advertise-as-free-when-many-pay-ftc-ruling-2024-1">finally ruling in January of this year</a> that the company cannot advertise its services as "free" unless all consumers qualify, or the ads clearly say who does.Intuit is appealing the FTC's ruling, and company spokesperson Derrick L. Plummer said in a statement<a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/2024/01/23/1226291903/turbotax-intuit-ftc-free-services"> to NPR</a> that the opinion was "deeply flawed.""This decision is the result of a biased and broken system where the Commission serves as accuser, judge, jury, and then appellate judge all in the same case," Plummer said in the statement.A 2019 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.propublica.org/article/inside-turbotax-20-year-fight-to-stop-americans-from-filing-their-taxes-for-free">ProPublica investigation found</a> Intuit and H&amp;R Block's practices — including hiding their free filing options from Google search — are part of a decadeslong lobbying effort by the companies to keep tax filing services complicated.Both companies spend millions of dollars a year <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/business/taxes/turbotax-h-r-block-spend-millions-lobbying-us-keep-doing-n736386">convincing lawmakers</a> to maintain the current system, which so happens to result in consumers buying their products, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/filing-taxes-america-system-how-other-countries-do-better-2021-8">Business Insider previously reported</a>. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A backlogged and underfunded IRS may struggle this year during <keyword id="13031387" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tax-filing" source="Orion">tax filing</keyword> season.</li><li>Treasury officials and the top IRS watchdog have already warned about potential delays getting filers their refunds.</li></ul>It's the most wonderful time of the year: <keyword id="12148805" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tax" source="Orion">tax</keyword> season.It kicked off on Monday, as millions of Americans began to dust off their W2s and 1099s in anticipation of getting a refund.But it may be a slog for many Americans. The agency is grappling with the legacy of GOP-led budget cuts spanning a decade and new responsibilities imposed on it during the pandemic. In a press release, the <a href="https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-begins-2022-tax-season-urges-extra-caution-for-taxpayers-to-file-accurate-tax-returns-electronically-to-speed-refunds-avoid-delays">agency marked</a> 2022's filing season with an "urgent reminder to taxpayers to take extra precautions this year to file an accurate tax return electronically to help speed refunds."Treasury officials <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/irs-tax-season-problems-ahead-delayed-refunds-2022-1">have already warned</a> that it's going to be a difficult process for the IRS this year, potentially delaying how quickly refund checks will get to Americans. National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-irs-watchdog-worried-2022-refund-delays-americans-2022-1">said</a> that the IRS had 6.2 million unprocessed returns as of mid-December. Here are three ways that the IRS is saying filers should prepare to get their refund as quickly as possible.<h2>Start early to avoid any last-minute surprises</h2>The filing season runs from Jan. 24 through April 18. Get started on filing a return soon to give yourself plenty of time to settle questions.Don't count on too much help from the IRS. During the first six months of 2021, they fielded 240 million calls with under 15,000 people. That amounts to one person for every 16,000 calls. The agency's staffing levels are the same as in 1970.It's also still unclear whether lawmakers in Congress will urge the IRS to extend the filing season, as it did last year.<h2>Avoid paper returns and file electronically if possible</h2>Treasury officials are stressing that people should file electronically and keep away from paper returns if possible.Even a small mistake on an individual return could merit further scrutiny by an IRS employee — like submitting a return with the wrong Social Security number, stimulus check, or <keyword id="11964084" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="child-tax-credit" source="Orion">child tax credit</keyword> amount. Their backlog has only grown during the pandemic. Collins, the IRS watchdog, said that the IRS had nearly 5 million pieces of correspondence as of mid-December."Paper is the IRS's Kryptonite, and the agency is still buried in it," Collins said in a release.The <a href="https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free">IRS Free File system</a> allows taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of $73,000 or less to file their federal income tax returns online at no cost. The agency <a href="https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-news/at-01-48.pdf">said</a> that online filers will get their refunds in less than three weeks, compared to six to eight weeks for paper returns.<h2>Set up a direct deposit account with the IRS</h2>The IRS is advising taxpayers to set up a direct deposit account to speed up the refund process."Combining direct deposit with electronic filing is the fastest way to receive your refund. 3 ways you can avoid refund delays this tax season, according to the IRS

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The IRS said it's made more progress in tracking down taxes millionaires owe.</li><li>They also closed some cases, including a taxpayer deducting expenses to build a mega-mansion.</li></ul>The IRS says its mission to crack down on higher-earning tax dodgers has yielded $122 million more from just 100 millionaires — and they've already closed several cases of particularly brazen evasion.The passage of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inflation-reduction-act-how-it-reduces-price-growth-deficit-pressures-2022-8">Inflation Reduction Act</a> infused <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/democrats-big-climate-tax-bill-make-tax-refund-on-time-2022-8">billions of dollars</a> into the previously perpetually underfunded and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meet-irs-worker-trying-to-get-you-your-tax-refund-2022-3">paper-laden IRS</a>. A good chunk of that was earmarked for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-in-the-irs-overhaul-tax-enforcement-wealthy-corporations-2023-4">increased enforcement</a>, and, in a new announcement, the IRS said that enforcement is only ramping up."Prior to the Inflation Reduction Act, more than a decade of budget cuts prevented the IRS from keeping pace with the increasingly complicated methods the wealthiest tax taxpayers used to hide their income and evade their paying their fair share of taxes," IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel told reporters in a call. "Inflation Reduction Act funding gives us the ability to take swift and aggressive action to improve compliance and close the tax gap."Since the passage of the IRA, the IRS has closed several cases of high-earning taxpayers getting creative with their business expenses and deductions.In one case, according to Werfel, a former CEO was sentenced to a year in prison and ordered to pay over $15 million because he was deducting personal expenses as business expenses, and using that to finance his construction of a 51,000 square foot mansion. Some of those expenses he claimed included an outdoor pool, pool house, and tennis, basketball, and bocce courts, according to Werfel, alongside falsifying millions for luxury vehicles, artwork, country club memberships, and homes for his children.Other cases Werfel highlighted: A restaurant owner skimming hundreds of thousands from his business to spend on himself and gamble, all while filing false tax returns. And in another case, someone received over $5 million in COVID-relief loans for a sham business, and then used that money to buy Ferrari, Bentley, and Lamborghini cars.The IRS is specifically taking aim at Americans who earn over $1 million, and have over $250,000 in tax debt. An IRS memo <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rich-people-tax-evasion-owe-billions-returns-2023-10">previously viewed by Insider</a> showed that nearly 1,000 taxpayers making over $1 million annually did not file their taxes multiple times between 2015 to 2020. That group of taxpayers — of whom 58 earn at least $10 million — were estimated by the IRS to owe over $34 billion as of May 2023.In September, the IRS <a target="_blank" href="https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-announces-sweeping-effort-to-restore-fairness-to-tax-system-with-inflation-reduction-act-funding-new-compliance-efforts">said</a> it was contacting 1,600 of those millionaires who owe over $250,000 to try and get those back taxes. Now, the agency said that it's collected $122 million from 100 of those taxpayers. That's a grand total of around $160 million clawed back from high-earners, according to Werfel, when combined with the $38 million that the IRS <a target="_blank" href="https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-announces-sweeping-effort-to-restore-fairness-to-tax-system-with-inflation-reduction-act-funding-new-compliance-efforts">previously collected from 175 high-earners</a>. And that's all without the 1,500 other individuals that the IRS is working on."The funds that were collected should give you a fairly good idea of how much money is on the table for us to go to collect," Werfel said.The agency will also start sending out notices to foreign firms that might not be adequately reporting their American profits, and will expand its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/corporate-taxes-dodging-irs-enforcement-microsoft-audit-2023-10">corporate compliance program</a> that helps figure out which big companies to audit.Beyond chasing down high-earners, the IRS also said it's expanding taxpayer assistance across the country and online. That includes new physical centers, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tax-season-outlook-analysis-difficult-refunds-delayed-irs-understaffed-2022-1">more staffing</a>, new digital tools, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photo-irs-why-refund-checks-delayed-paper-unprocessed-tax-returns-2022-6">digitizing the piles of paper</a> that the agency was once bogged down with.

In the future, tax-filing may require only a few clicks — or even replying to a text message as in <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/03/the-10-second-tax-return/475899/">some European countries</a> like Estonia. Within the Inflation Reduction Act that passed with only Democratic votes last month, $15 million was set aside for the Treasury Department to study a free, federal tax-filing website.Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Thursday expressed support for simplifying the process. "Tax filing should be simple: I recently came across a statistic it takes an average American 13 hours to file a tax return," she said during a visit to an IRS facility in Maryland. "Compare that with Sweden. Some taxpayers can file simply by replying to a text message. We can and must do better."It's not a new concept. Natasha Sarin, the Treasury's counselor for tax policy and implementation, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/americans-get-do-taxes-quickly-for-free-irs-funded-treasury-2022-4">previously wrote</a> that an adequately funded IRS would mean that Americans could potentially file their taxes at no cost and within minutes, like in similarly developed countries.A <a href="https://www.nber.org/papers/w30008">working paper for the National Bureau of Economic Research</a> by researchers from the Treasury Department, Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank, and Dartmouth College found that autofilling tax returns could be straightforward for many filers, with 41% to 48% of returns able to accurately be pre-populated using information from the previous year's tax returns.
