New Delhi, Unwanted contact, unwanted sexting, hate speech, trolling and being treated meanly are the top five online risks in India which has seen a dip in digital civility, according to a new research from <keyword id="10387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword>. The results which were released in conjunction with the international Safer Internet Day on Tuesday revealed that 45 per cent of those who faced online risks knew the perpetrators. Among teenagers, 71 per cent faced a risk, while 81 per cent worry risk will happen again, said the study, adding that social <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword> sites are the most common online space for risks. However, 67 per cent of those surveyed said that they believe technology and social media companies will create tools and policies that will encourage respectful and civil behaviour. In the Microsoft Digital Civility Index (DCI), a measure of the tone and tenor of online interactions as reported by consumers in 25 countries, India fared poorly in 2019. A higher DCI score means lower perceived civility. The India DCI Index increased 12 points to 71 per cent in 2019 -- the highest in four years, the results showed. The report, based on the views of 12,520 adults and teenagers questioned across 25 countries including India, showed that physical appearance and politics are the primary drivers of online incivility, with 31 per cent of all respondents pointing to both of these two topics as problematic. Sexual orientation was close behind at 30 per cent, while religion and race came in at 26 per cent and 25 per cent respectively, <keyword id="1118049" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jacqueline-Beauchere">Jacqueline Beauchere</keyword>, <keyword id="23764" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="global">Global</keyword> Digital Safety Advocate at Microsoft, wrote in a blog post. The top five for online civility were the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Malaysia and the US. Those with the lowest online civility readings were Vietnam, Russia, <keyword id="15385" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Colombia">Colombia</keyword>, Peru and South Africa, the research showed.

As per the survey, India ranked 7th in Digital Civility Index globally. The survey studied a number of online risks such as attempts at gathering personal information, online bullying, unwelcome messages seeking sexual favours, and misinformation and fake news. It found that the spread of online risks by family and friends in India has been increasing sharply, going up by nine percentage points to 29% as of May 2018 compared to previous year. The Microsoft survey is the latest to highlight the problem of misinformation and fake news in India. India has more fake news than any other country in the world: Survey

New Delhi, Feb 12 () If you have faced a situation where an online conversation turned uncivil over topics like sexual orientation or religion, you aren't alone. According to a report by Microsoft, topics like sexual orientation (40 per cent), religion (39 per cent) and politics (37 per cent) drove incivility the most in online conversations in India. Physical appearance (31 per cent) and gender identity (29 per cent) are also topics that see people turning uncivil on social media platforms. The global report saw participation from 12,520 adults and teens across 25 nations, including 502 from India. Globally, physical appearance (31 per cent), politics (31 per cent), sexual orientation (30 per cent), religion (26 per cent) and race (25 per cent) were topics that drove incivility. The India Digital Civility Index increased 12 points to 71 per cent -- indicating that uncivil behaviour in the online world had gotten worse compared to the previous year. The respondents said unwanted contact (40 per cent) was the most common risk they faced online. This was followed by unwanted sexting (26 per cent), hate speech (23 per cent), trolling (21 per cent), and mean treatment (20 per cent). About 67 per cent respondents said they believe technology and social media companies will create tools and policies that will encourage respectful and civil behaviour. The respondents said the most painful online risks include damage to professional reputation (94 per cent), unwanted sexting (94 per cent), online harassment (93 per cent), damage to personal reputation (93 per cent) and misogyny (88 per cent). <ul><li><keyword id="2845406" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="E-pharmacies">E-pharmacies</keyword> in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> have been prohibited from selling any medicines online, said Times of India citing a recent order by Delhi Court. </li><li>The <keyword id="6355014" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-high-court">Delhi High Court</keyword> has ordered the center and the state government to execute the ban immediately. </li><li>The ordered was issued in response to a public interest litigation that stated that the government has failed in regulating the sale of such medicine exposing consumers to the higher risk of ill-health. </li></ul>The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the Central and the Delhi governments to impose a ban on the online sale of medicine by e-pharmacies across India, the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/delhi-high-court-bans-online-medical-sales-across-country/articleshow/67068317.cms">Times of India </a>reported. The order was issued in response to a public interest litigation filed by Zaheer Ahmed who said that e-pharmacies in India sell a large volume of medicines daily without a prescription, which in turn, exposes consumers to higher health risks. In India, the digital sale of medicines is not regulated leading e-pharmacies to sell ‘misbranded and substandard’ products which are not sold otherwise, said the report. India also prohibits the online sale of medicine under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and Pharmacy Act, 1948, PIL pointed out. While the Drug Controller General of India had already issued an order in 2015 to all states to prevent the sale of any medicine online without a prescription, the e-pharmacies continue to sell thousands of medicines daily, said the report citing the PIL. The Union Health Ministry had also reportedly drafted a set of rules on the sale of drugs by e-pharmacies, but these rules were apparently not implemented. An Indian court has banned the sale of online medicines because of safety concerns

<ul><li>ASCI introduces new guidelines to make real-money gaming advertising safer.</li><li>The advertisements will not be allowed to present ‘Online gaming for real money winnings’ as an income opportunity or an alternative employment option now.</li></ul>The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) has introduced guidelines to make real-money gaming advertising safer and more responsible. The guidelines have been developed to ensure that such advertising makes users aware about financial and other risks that are associated with playing online games with real money winnings. As per a recent KPMG study, online gaming grew 45% in FY20 with the user base surpassing 365 million by March 2020 on real-money games (RMGs). The card-based and fantasy segments both achieved strong traction. As India is a mobile-first country, more than 90% of online gamers play games on their phones. The online gaming market, worth more than $500 million now, could be worth $1.1 billion by 2021. In 2019, around 5.6 billion mobile gaming apps were downloaded in India – the highest in the world and representing nearly 13% of gaming apps globally. Internet penetration in India is 31% and KMPG expects it to reach 53% by 2021 – which would give over 700 million people access to the internet and its wealth of gaming options. The rapid growth, and the real danger of the negative impacts of RMG advertisements, prompted ASCI to develop <keyword id="10323569" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="advertising-guidelines">advertising guidelines</keyword> to ensure users are aware of the financial and addiction risks. The government, via the Ministry of Information &amp; Broadcasting, The Department of Consumer Affairs as well as Ministry of Electronics &amp; Information Technology, have given these <keyword id="10323570" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="asci-guidelines">ASCI guidelines</keyword> their full support and backing to comprehensively address growing concerns about the potential misleading and harmful advertisements in the sector. The guidelines will be effective from the 15th of December 2020, and apply to advertisements that are legally permitted. The guidelines: <ol><li>No gaming advertisement may depict any person under the age of 18 years, or who appears to be under the age of 18, engaged in playing a game of ONLINE GAMING FOR REAL MONEY WINNINGS, or suggest that such persons can play these games</li><li>Every such gaming advertisement must carry the following disclaimer: a. Print/static: This game involves an element of financial risk and may be addictive. Please play responsibly and at your own risk Such a disclaimer should occupy no less than 20% of the space in the advertisement It should also SPECIFICALLY meet disclaimer guidelines 4 (i) (ii) (iv) and (viii) laid out in the ASCI code b. Audio/video: “This game involves an element of financial risk and may be addictive. Please play responsibly and at your own risk.” Such a disclaimer must be placed in normal speaking pace at the end of the advertisement It must be in the same language as the advertisement For audio-visual mediums, the disclaimer needs to be in both audio and visual formats</li></ol>3. The advertisements should not present ‘Online gaming for real money winnings’ as an income opportunity or an alternative employment option. 4. The advertisement should not suggest that a person engaged in gaming activity is in any way more successful as compared to others. Manisha Kapoor, Secretary General of ASCI, said: “We have observed gaming advertisements target youth and families by suggesting that these can become sources of income and livelihood for them. We have noted concerns about such advertisements, both from consumers as well as the government. The key fact that is completely suppressed in most of these advertisements is the real possibility of losing money. Millions of users of these apps come from lower income families, who can ill afford to lose their hard earned money. The frequent use of celebrities in many of these advertisements make them more attractive to consumers, and consumers tend to trust their heroes and role models blindly. Combined with the fact that these games are highly addictive, these advertisements end up being not just misleading, but also harmful to individuals and society. And therefore, they are violative of the ASCI code. The idea of framing specific guidelines for advertisement of such games is to inform advertisers as well as members of the public what criteria we will use to scrutinize advertisements against which we receive complaints. While the government will take a decision on the legal issues surrounding the sector, we believe these advertising guidelines will make the online gaming for real money winnings more transparent and safer. We are particularly happy with the wholehearted support and backing of the government to ASCI in implementing these guidelines, and this is yet another demonstration of the belief in the strength of self-regulation. E-commerce losses due to online fraud to exceed $48 bn globally

<keyword id="6355838" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-york">New York</keyword>, Researchers, including one of Indian-origin, have developed a <keyword id="10420624" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-online-calculator">new online calculator</keyword> for estimating the individual and community-level risk of dying from <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">Covid-19</keyword>. The study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, revealed that the calculator will be useful to <keyword id="1509608" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="public-health-authorities">public health authorities</keyword> for assessing mortality risks in different communities, and for prioritizing certain groups for vaccination as Covid-19 vaccines become available. The algorithm underlying the calculator uses information from existing large studies to estimate risk of Covid-19 mortality for individuals based on age, gender, <keyword id="10420623" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sociodemographic-factors">sociodemographic factors</keyword> and a variety of different health conditions. The risk estimates apply to individuals in the general population who are currently uninfected and captures factors associated with both risks of future infection and complications after infection. "Our calculator represents a more quantitative approach and should complement other proposed qualitative guidelines for determining individual and community risks and allocating vaccines," said study senior author Nilanjan Chatterjee from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in the US. The calculator based on the model is available online for public health officials and interested individuals alike. It enables a user to determine individual risk based on factors such as age, sex, race/ethnicity, and medical history and can be used to define risk for a group, such as for a particular community, corporation, or university, based on the mix of relevant factors that define the group. In their paper, the research team used their calculator to describe the risk distribution for the whole US population, showing, for example, that only about 4% of the population at high risk -- defined as five times greater risk than the US average -- is expected to contribute close to 50% of the total deaths. The researchers also showed that population-level risk varies considerably from city to city and county to county. "For example, the percentage of the adult population exceeding the fivefold risk threshold varies from 0.4% in Layton, Utah, to 10.7% in Detroit, <keyword id="18877" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Michigan">Michigan</keyword>," Chatterjee said. The calculator allows users to calculate the mortality risk of individuals by combining information on individual-level factors with community-level pandemic dynamics, as available from a large variety of forecasting models.  eCommerce companies such as Amazon, Flipkart and <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> operate as marketplaces in India thus allowing any retailer or trader to sell goods on their platform. But companies such as <keyword id="64373" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shoppers-Stop">Shoppers Stop</keyword>, <keyword id="6398216" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tesco">Tesco</keyword>, <keyword id="6357823" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Big-Bazaar">Big Bazaar</keyword>, <keyword id="58448" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Reliance-Retail">Reliance Retail</keyword> and others work only with their chosen vendors, which makes them closed marketplaces. 
 
The two models of retail - online and offline - have different business models and cannot be looked upon with the same lens, said Aamir Jariwala, secretary, E-commerce Coalition of India, which represents firms such as YepMe, Ferns n Petals and IndiaMart, told the Economic Times. 
 Among all eCommerce companies, only <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> supports opening up online retail to FDI. 
 <keyword id="113282" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Retailers-Association-of-India">Retailers Association of India</keyword> (RAI), a lobby organisation for companies such as Reliance Retail and <keyword id="44949" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword>, has demanded a clarification from the government about what constitutes a marketplace and sought status equivalent to their online rivals, as several large offline retailers, too, explore opening online fronts. 
 
Many of these online stores that could make use of foreign capital are demanding opening up India's ecommerce sector to 100% FDI. But the move is being opposed by larger online marketplaces such as Flipkart and Snapdeal. The government is hearing various retail industry representatives before framing its policy. 
 
While, traditional retailers such as Shoppers Stop and BigBazaar are putting up a united front with RAI. "A lot of our members are either already running or want to open online channels and get access to foreign capital. This ambiguity on 'retail marketplaces' creates a sense of risk," said Kumar Rajagopalan, chief executive at the lobby group. 
 
Offline retailers are also demanding that the government not differentiate within the retail sector by sales channel for drafting FDI regulations. "Creation of a policy on FDI just for online or offline retail is very myopic. It will create an imbalance in the sector," Rajagopalan said. 
 
Ecommerce firms argue that they will lose a good share of the market due to such policies. 
 
Nasir Jamal, secretary general at ECAI, said financial and strategic investors would flock to offline retail if the government equates online and offline retailers with respect to FDI. "Inventory-led ecommerce companies are facing a capital crunch, and are on the lookout for funds and they also need support," he said. 
 "Offline and online retail is converging and the government should precipitate this by having similar policies," said Nitin Gupta, CEO of <keyword id="1493567" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="PayU-India">PayU India</keyword>, owned by South Africa's <keyword id="1634215" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Naspers-Group">Naspers Group</keyword>. 
 
India's ecommerce trade accounts for 2% of the overall retail sector, which grosses over 31.7 lakh crore ($500 billion) annually. The country's online retail sector grew to $12 billion last year.

Fearing competition, Flipkart, Snapdeal oppose 100% FDI in India’s eCommerce sector

A high 46% of the workforce in organizations in India suffers from some or the other form of <keyword id="23666" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="stress">stress</keyword>, according to the latest data from Optum. The sample size of 200,000 employees (over 30 large employers) who took an online Health Risk Assessment during the first quarter of 2016. 
 
The study found 43% with skewed BMI (body mass index), of which 30% with diabetic risk, 30% with hypertension risk and 46% high on stress. This number is about 30% higher than a survey that it conducted in 2014 with a sample size of 30,000. Commonly accepted BMI ranges are underweight: under 18.5, normal weight: 18.5 to 25, overweight: 25 to 30, obese: over 30.

Online fraud involves the use of online services and software to take advantage of victims. It covers different types of cybercrime activity such as identity theft, phishing, and different hacking activities. Recently, the Ministry of Public Security from China as released a list of the top five sources of online fraud. They are as follows- <ol><li>Brushing</li><li>False Investment</li><li>Money Management</li><li>Dodgy loan scheme</li><li>Impersonation of customer service</li></ol>‘Brushing’, a type of e-commerce scam has topped the list. It lures the victim to make payments for goods or any shipment that was never delivered or only delivered when buyers perform certain online tasks like creating an e-commerce profile or downloading dodgy apps. Buyers may be also asked to pay more for goods. Using the ‘Brushing’ technique e-commerce vendors send small items which victims never ordered. Vendors also use this technique to write positive product reviews to increase visibility on e-commerce platforms. The list is followed by false investment and money management. Scammers use false investments, promising high rates of return with little risk. This type of fraud is very much similar to pyramid schemes. Dodgy loan schemes and impersonation of customer service operatives are the last two common online scams in China. Chinese Ministry of Public Security has warned citizens not to fall for these online scams following with month-long anti-fraud campaign. How common are these frauds in India? In recent years, India has witnessed a dramatic rise in cybercrimes. Online fraud schemes and phishing scams have become prominent in India. In 2020, Telangana had the highest number of fraud offences related to online banking. In total, <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/india-reported-118-rise-in-cyber-crime-in-2020-578-incidents-of-fake-news-on-social-media-data/article36480525.ece">India recorded 50,035 cybercrime</a> and fraud cases in 2020, an 11.8% surge when compared to 2019. A large number of cases were for online banking fraud, OTP frauds, credit/debit card fraud and ATM-related frauds. Keeping numbers in mind we can assume, that India still struggles with awareness when it comes to online banking frauds. Moreover, general public awareness and campaigns can contribute to the prevention of online fraud in India. Other than these, cybercriminals use a variety of strategies like phishing and spoofing, data breach, denial of service, malware, ransomware, and many more. If you think you have been scammed then change all your passwords and delete suspicious software. If you observe unwanted credit card transactions, immediately call the credit card company to prevent yourself from further loss. Following these simple steps can prevent you from online scams.
