Indian students are enhancing their digital capabilities by taking up courses in artificial intelligence, blockchain and machine learning. According to the online learning platform Coursera, artificial Intelligence is the most in-demand subject, followed by its specialisations. As many as 2 million enrolled in the course in 2019. “With the growing relevance of new age skills needed to keep pace with the changing workplace, employers are acknowledging the importance for stackable credentials. This includes the large rural segment as well. The blended approach that online learning brings allows us to be able to provide access to the best universities across rural India,” Screwvala added. Government’s push for online degrees To kickstart the learning calendar for students, the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, on May 17, announced that the top 100 educational institutions in India will be automatically allowed to start courses online from May 30, 2020. Under this, the courses will be taught via live interactions and aired on TV channels for students from 1st to 12th grade to access it. It will also introduce at least 12 educational channels to keep the learning continuity for students. As many as 200 textbooks have been added to e-pathshala and 61 crore students have accessed the courses on Diksha platform, as on March 24. Given the delay in the academic year, the government has also tied up with private DTH operators like Tata Sky to air educational content on TV. The students and teachers can also communicate with experts via skype.

These 10 online courses will prepare you for high-paying offbeat job roles in top Indian Companies

They're ideally a way to reach the massive part of the world's population who likely won't ever have a chance to attend a top school, or in many cases, even a bad one. 
But, according to a <a href="http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2350964">new survey from the University of Pennsylvania</a> highlighted <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2013/11/20/survey-mooc-students-are-elite-young-and-male-2/">by The Wall Street Journal</a>, the vast majority of people who sign up for the online courses have socioeconomic advantages. Enrollment skews overwhelmingly toward white people, men, the highly educated, and people from developed countries.
In short, it's the sort of elites who had access in the first place that are taking these courses out of curiosity or to advance their careers.
Of the survey's respondents, 83% report having some kind of post-secondary education, and at least 79.4% have a bachelor's degree. 
This divide is most pronounced in countries where relatively few people get tertiary education. In Brazil, Russia, India, and China, where only 5.1% of citizens have some college education, nearly 80% of MOOC takers have been to college. 
To be sure, the data provides only a snapshot, coming from 32 sessions of 24 different courses that have been offered by the University of Pennsylvania on Coursera. But considering that those courses have covered a full range of subjects, that Coursera is the largest provider of MOOCs, and the University of Pennsylvania is the second-most active school on the platform after Stanford, the trends are concerning.

Reaching the less educated in underdeveloped countries will always be a challenge. But the vision of granting access to people who otherwise wouldn't have it and reducing the cost of higher education hasn't materialized yet.

Udacity is a for-profit company, as is Coursera. It seems that any effort geared towards reaching the most underserved populations isn't likely to be a money maker.

According to Udemy report on ‘What the world is learning (From home)’ the online learning enrollments in India went up by a whopping 606% for courses teaching communication skills after people were confined to their homes due to <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">Coronavirus</keyword> lockdown. “There is increased interest in online courses to feed personal interests and new hobbies, such as Ukulele and Technical Drawing. Demand for particular online learning topics also varies by country and geographic area, such as communication skills in India and Piano in Spain,” the report said. This is followed by the demand for courses in financial analysis and business fundamentals at 311% and 281%, respectively. The demand for soft skills like growth mindset, creativity, innovation and focus mastery witnessed the highest growth in enrollments on Udemy. “If I were to generalize a bit, then routine and mono-skilled roles will be replaced with specialists, insights-driven and multidisciplinary roles. Skills like creativity, empathy, collaboration will gain even more prominence,” Sanjiv Mehta, CEO, HUL <a href="https://youtu.be/RUKyUK50TPY">said</a> in a webinar. Overall, the online learning enrollments witnessed a 200% increase. This may be because the employees too are working in a remote setu and they are now keen on acquiring new skills. “As a result of this pandemic, we are all being forced to learn. Some of us are learning how to work from home and how to work from home along with kids. Others are learning out of necessity because of job loss or an uncertain professional future. Learning requires effort, but it can help us make progress from where we are today to where we want to be,” said Padraig Nash, Director of Learning Science and Instructional Design at Udemy.
